Trap-for-CinderellaIain Softley returns to the big screen this summer with an anticipated psychological thriller, Trap for Cinderella, marking yet another intriguing direction for the writer-director to take, whose career includes the likes of sci-fi, drama, family adventure, and mystery.

Rising young star Tuppence Middleton (Cleanskin) takes the lead here for Softley, and now Lionsgate have released the first trailer for the film, which is slightly restricted in nature.

Micky (Tuppence Middleton) is a fun-loving photographer, living a party lifestyle in London until a chance encounter with a childhood friend changes her world forever. The opposite to life-and-soul Micky, Do (Alexandra Roach) is a quiet bank clerk, with little by way of a social life. Yet much to the annoyance of her DJ boyfriend Jake (Aneurin Barnard), Micky is all too delighted to reacquaint herself with Do, embracing her old friend with typical gusto.

But when they return to the tranquil French villa where they spent so many happy summers in their youth, tragedy strikes. A fire engulfs the building, leaving Micky badly burnt and blighted by amnesia. Unable to even recall her own name, Micky is forced on a shocking journey of self-discovery. For nothing — friends, relatives, lovers and even herself — is as she remembers it.

Middleton is joined by an excellent cast, led by Alexandra Roach, Aneurin Barnard, Kerry Fox, Frances de la Tour, and Emilia Fox.

Softley is directing from his own script, adapting the original cult novel by Sebastien Japrisot, whose previous adaptations include the Oscar-nominated A Very Long Engagement.

Middleton is very much an actress to watch out for in the coming years. Not only is she leading Softley’s Trap for Cinderella, she’s also set to star alongside Emma Thompson, Pierce Brosnan, and Timothy Spall in Love Punch; Rosamund Pike, Aaron Paul, Pierce Brosnan (again), Imogen Poots, and Toni Collette in A Long Way Down; and the incredible cast that the Wachowski siblings have lined up for Jupiter Ascending.

Barnard was absolutely terrific opposite Kaya Scodelario in Emanuel and the Truth About Fishes, and I’m looking forward to seeing them both alongside each other here.

Trap for Cinderella is set to be released in the UK and Ireland on 12th July. No word yet on a US release date, but here’s to hoping it will be crossing the Atlantic later this year. And note, the trailer itself is not strictly red-band, but the side shot of Middleton in the bath warrants a word of warning for those watching this at work.
