Last week, Michael Bay made a surprise announcement with regards to the upcoming Transformers 4, and confirmed that Mark Wahlberg has boarded the project.
After early rumours last month of Wahlberg coming on board, which Bay had previously shot down, the director announced that he had changed his mind after listening to the chatter online, and is now very much looking forward to re-teaming with Wahlberg, following their upcoming Pain & Gain (due out in Spring 2013).
With that first big casting announcement made, we can hopefully look forward to more details about the project being teased in the coming months, and one of those has now been revealed.
Bay phoned into TMZ’s live show on Friday, and discussed exactly where in the chronology of the original trilogy the new instalment will be set:
“The movie is going to continue 4 years on from the attack on Chicago which was in the last movie. So it’s going still to have the same lineage but going in a full, new, different direction and it actually feels really natural how it is going in that direction.”
So it’s officially going to be a sequel, set in the same world as the original trilogy, in the aftermath of Dark of the Moon.
And I, for one, am really looking forward to seeing where things go from.
I think Dark of the Moon was a brilliant blockbuster, and I think bringing on Wahlberg can be taken as a very good sign for the coming fourth instalment.
Transformers 4 had been set for a release 27th June, 2014, but Bay says during the interview that the film is set for 4th July, 2014. With the release of How to Train Your Dragon 2 set for 20th June, 2014, pushing the film back a week sounds like a good idea. Especially when the new date is Independence Day. Either way, it’s a date that can’t come fast enough.
