Peter Jackson’s epic new trilogy of movies is released in just a few days and we thought it may be a nice idea to do a Top Ten based around fantasy movies that will you get you well and truly in the mood for the first of the three new movies in The Hobbit series.

I’ve tried to make the list as varied as possible and is my personal list of fantasy films from across the last 30 odd years. I watched all of these at varying times, some when they were released and others when I was older but have enjoyed them all for very different reasons.

The anticipation is building and has been ever the MGM financial mess but the time is nearly here for us all to see what Peter Jackson has created and I for one cannot wait! So, without further ado, here’s my top 10 list of fantasy movies that will get you well and truly set up to watch the first of the three new movies, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

The-Lord-of-the-Rings

10) The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001 – 2003)

I guess we may as well get this one out of the way as you know doubt knew that it was coming. The Lord of the Rings is (in my humble opinion) the greatest set of fantasy movies ever made. They completely smashed the box office apart in the early 00′s and paved the way for The Hobbit to be made. It should probably be a lot higher than number 10 but since it was such an obvious one, it comes in as our first entry.

    Yep.

Willy Wonka and Wizard of Oz are definitely NOT fantasy movies. And they are you’re top two. Sorry, this is a miss.

Interesting list. Why no Harry Potter, I wonder? As a minor correction, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz was published in 1900, not 1910, but I was glad to see that classic fantasy film on the list.

    Legend? Dark Crystal?

I just cant believe the 10th kingdom din’t make the cut…. How can you make a list of fantasy movies and leave out the biggest jawbreaker ever?? With everything in it from wolfman and a turned golden retriever, all coming to the real world through a mirror, to cinderella rapunzel and magic boots and about everything you can think off.. Just a beautifull classic tale. It deserves to be on every fantasy movie list if you ask me.

    Then what are they?

Legend should have definitely been on this list! As well as Return to Oz and Dark Crystal. What about the 1967 version of Mr. Doctor Dolittle, with the giant pink snail and the pushme-pullyu? The Neverending Story is another. Jean Cocteau’s Beauty and the Beast, Ladyhawke, Howls Moving Castle, Excalibur, The Secret of Moonacre. Come to think of it, maybe just 10 is impossible! There are too many great ones!!

I think that before Willow and in the same mood I would add to the list Krull. Music, adventure, characters, epic monster, it has everything.
