The Weinstein Co. have successfully acquired the US and Canadian distribution rights to Richard Ayoade’s debut feature film Submarine, following it’s premiere at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival.

Submarine is a dark British comedy adapted from the novel of the same name by Joe Dunthorne. The film stars Sally Hawkins, Noah Taylor, Paddy Considine, Gemma Chan, Yasmin Paige and Craig Roberts.

Submarine follows a 15-year-old boy (Taylor) with two objectives: to lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to stop his mother (Hawkins) from leaving his father (Considine) for her dance teacher.

No word on when The Weinstein Co. will release Submarine in the US and Canada, but, going by the high amount of praise it’s been receiving, don’t be surprised if they hold this one off until next Autumn.

Variety reported this one.
