The-Stag-Quad-PosterMaking its world debut at TIFF back in September, Irish comedy The Stag will be heading into cinemas on our shores in just a few months’ time, marking the feature directorial debut from novelist John Butler.

Arrow launched a new trailer just before Christmas, and to celebrate the coming New Year, we’ve got the quad poster to share as an exclusive, along with the film’s Irish and UK release dates.

No one makes a less likely candidate for a wild stag party than Fionnan (Hugh O’Conor), a set designer so comfortable in his masculinity that he feels no shame in micromanaging the decor for his forthcoming wedding. But his adoring fiancée, Ruth (Amy Huberman), feels that Fionnan really needs to cut loose in one last bachelor’s hurrah with his mates. She recruits Davin (Andrew Scott), Fionnan’s best friend — and her ex — to make the arrangements. The gents opt for a camping trip, but what promises to be a leisurely weekend of fresh air and some light hiking is about to get a major dose of testosterone. The Machine (Peter McDonald), Ruth’s notoriously obnoxious brother, is determined to tag along.

Andrew Scott, best known for his masterful work as Moriarty in the BBC’s Sherlock, leads a great ensemble, starring alongside Peter McDonald, Amy Huberman, Hugh O’Conor, Brian Gleeson, Andrew Bennett, and Michael Legge.

Butler (Your Bad Self) directs from a script he co-wrote with the Oscar-nominated McDonald (Pentecost), both also making their feature debuts as writers here.

Since his brilliant arc as Moriarty on Sherlock, which of course returns to BBC One on New Year’s Day tomorrow night, Scott has very much become one to watch. He gives an excellent turn as part of the voice cast supporting Tom Hardy in Steven Knight’s award-winning Locke, due out next year. And he’ll also be seen next year in Ken Loach’s Jimmy’s Hall, as well as alongside Bill Nighy and Dominic West in Pride, to say nothing of joining Daniel Radcliffe and James McAvoy in the Max Landis-penned blockbuster, Frankenstein, in 2015.

Clearly a lot to look forward to from Scott in the years to come, kicking things off nicely with The Stag in the spring. The comedy earned very promising reviews coming out of TIFF this year, and I’m looking forward to its arrival in a few months’ time.

The Stag will be released in Irish cinemas on 7th March, following a week later in UK cinemas on14th March. For now, here’s our exclusive look at the quad poster, which you can click through to enlarge, along with the new trailer. Enjoy.
