The-Secret-Service-Cover-1Matthew Vaughn really made a name for himself with his 2010 adaptation of Mark Millar’s Kick-Ass, and now the two are officially set to reunite once more for The Secret Service.

Following his return to blockbuster territory back in 2011 with X-Men: First Class, we’ve been hearing in the past couple of years that Vaughn has been eyeing more of Millar’s work to bring to the big screen.

Deadline now report that Fox have acquired worldwide rights for The Secret Service, and Vaughn has lined it up for his next directorial project.

The writer-director has teamed up with Jane Goldman (Kick-Ass) once more to write the script, based on the original comics by Mark Millar and Dave Gibbons.

Courtesy of Amazon, here’s the synopsis for the source material:

From the writer of Kick-Ass and the artist of Watchmen comes a collaboration decades in the making! The world’s greatest secret agent is on the most exciting case of his career. But will the end of the world as know it take a back seat to training his street-punk nephew to be the next James Bond? meanwhile, what’s the secret link between a series of kidnapped sci-fi stars, the murder of an entire town, and a dark secret from inside Mount Everest? Under Uncle Jack’s supervision, Gary’s spy skills and confidence blossom–but when the duo learn what’s behind the celebrity kidnappings, the knowledge comes at a price. The conspiracy begins to unravel, but who can be trusted when so many prominent figures seem to be involved? It’s a must-be-seen-to-be-believed action spectacle!

Intriguingly, the studio have set its US release date for November 14th, 2014, which puts it one week after Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, and one week before The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1. A bold move, to be certain, given the substantial audience appeal that those two films already have in place. It will be interesting to see how the move pays off. I have a feeling that November 2014 could be the May 2013 of next year.

Production is set to begin for The Secret Service in August, which means we should hopefully be hearing some casting news soon. From what we’ve heard from the man himself, it’s likely we can expect Mark Hamill to be involved as himself, like in the comics.
