Based on a true story, The Reef sees a group of friends go out on a pleasure boat who, after running aground and capsizing are limited on options. Their dingy has sprung a leak, their SOS system only works if a plane flies overhead and they have to decide whether it’s best to stay on the boat or to try and swim to land which is 10 miles away! After choosing to swim to land, we’re taken on a roller-coaster ride which involves the group doing their best to avoid the killer sharks that may be lurking in the Coral Sea of the east coast of Australia.
Any shark movie will always be compared to Steven Spielberg’s Jaws as the bench was set so high with the tense music, great characters and a wonderful script. This movie does a great job at creating the tension although I’d say some of the music is used in places where it’s not necessary to scare the audience that little bit more for no real reason. The acting is very believable and I’d love to find out more about how the scenes with the shark were shot. It never looks like CG and if they really shot the movie with real sharks, massive respect to the film-makers. If however it was CG, it was very difficult to tell as the sharks all looked pretty real to me!
If you’re a lover of being scared and are looking for the next shark movie that will shake you up since Deep Blue Sea or Deep Blue Sea, then this is the one for you!
