Julie-Estelle-in-The-Raid-2-BerendalGareth Evans’ The Raid was without a doubt one of the biggest breakout films of last year, gaining favour from both audiences and critics alike, which isn’t common for a martial arts film. And needless to say, the upcoming sequel, The Raid 2: Berandal, is definitely something we’re looking forward to.

The sequel picks up where Evans left off in The Raid, and production is very much underway out in Indonesia.

We saw a handful of first images as production began earlier in the year. And now Evans has taken to Twitter to share two new images. The first gives us a look at a new character, rather brilliantly called ‘Hammer Girl’. And the second is a set photo giving us a look at a stunt scene.

Picking up right where the first film ends, The Raid 2 follows Rama (Uwais) as he goes undercover and infiltrates the ranks of a ruthless Jakarta crime syndicate in order to protect his family and uncover the corruption in his own police force.

Iko Uwais will be back, front and centre, taking the lead on the sequel once more. And he’s joined by a great international cast, starring alongside Tio Pakusadewo, Putra Arifin Scheunamann, Julie Estelle, Alex Abbad, and Roy Marten.

Evans is once more directing from his own script.

The Raid 2: Berandal is currently without a release date, but Evans has spoken of returning in 2014, so we’ve likely still got some time to go before we see it arrive. The original film made its presence felt at its debut at TIFF back in 2011 though, and it would be very interesting to see Evans return to Toronto a little later this year.
