Ralph-Fiennes-and-Felicity-Jones-in-The-Invisible-WomanAfter making his directorial debut with the acclaimed Coriolanus, Ralph Fiennes returns behind the camera this year for his sophomore feature, The Invisible Woman.

Based on the true story of Charles Dickens and his mistress, Nelly Ternan, the film will make its debut to the world at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival, and we’ve got the first image of Fiennes opposite the brilliant Felicity Jones.

Ralph Fiennes directs and stars as Charles Dickens in this opulent period drama about the great novelist’s passionate, years-long secret affair with the young actress Nelly Ternan (Felicity Jones; Like Crazy).

Fiennes is in the lead as Dickens, with Jones starring opposite as his younger mistress, Nelly Ternan. And the two are joined by a great cast, led by Kristin Scott Thomas, Tom Hollander, Joanna Scanlan, Perdita Weeks, Amanda Hale, Tom Burke, John Kavanagh, and Michael Marcus.

Fiennes is directing from a script penned by Abi Morgan (Shame, The Hour), who adapts the original book, The Invisible Woman: The Story of Nelly Ternan and Charles Dickens, by Claire Tomalin.

Following its debut out in Toronto, The Invisible Woman is set to be released in the UK on 7th February, 2014. That release date currently sees it open opposite RoboCop, Dallas Buyers Club, and Jason Reitman’s Labor Day, which should prove for a very, very interesting opening weekend, particularly with at least three of those four being potential Oscar candidates – and, indeed, possibly Oscar nominees by that weekend.
