The-Host-Character-Poster-Saoirse-RonanAndrew Niccol’s The Host arrives on the big screen next month, and it has been shaping up nicely to be a sci-fi blockbuster to really look forward to this year. Adapting the original Stephenie Meyer novel of the same name, the film sees Saoirse Ronan take centre stage as our female lead.

The last trailer that we saw landed back in November, giving us our first full-length look at the film. And with its release date fast approaching, a great new trailer has debuted online.

“Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that takes over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. Wanderer, the invading ‘soul’ who has been given Melanie’s body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too-vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn’t expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer’s thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves – Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body’s desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she’s never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.”

Ronan is joined by Jake Abel and Max Irons in the leading trio, with Diane Kruger, William Hurt, and Chandler Canterbury completing the cast.

Niccol is directing from his own script, based on Meyer’s original novel.

The film is of course the first of Meyer’s work to be adapted following the end of The Twilight Saga last year. The author has spoken of the possibility of turning The Host into the first of a trilogy. And if that were to happen, we could well have more of this universe to look forward to in theatres in the years to come.

The Host will be released in the UK on 27th March, and has a US release date set for 29th March. For now, here’s the latest trailer to get you in the mood.
