The HeyUGuys Interview: Greta Gerwig on Frances Ha

StumbleUponReddit

Greta Gerwig

Greta Gerwig first came to prominence as a darling of the mumblecore movement, working with the likes of The Duplass Brothers and Joe Swanberg. She’ll be best known to mainstream audiences for her roles in Arthur and No Strings Attached, and perhaps also Damsels in Distress, Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love, and Greenberg. The latter, in which she starred alongside Ben Stiller, was her first collaboration with director Noah Baumbach (The Squid and the Whale) who she’s reuniting with for this week’s Frances Ha.

As well as starring as the film’s lead character Frances, Gerwig also co-wrote the film with Baumbach which looks likely to show up in a lot of Top 10 lists come the end of the year. We were lucky enough to catch up with the actress and ask her about the film, and particularly about her working relationship with director which looks set to continue for some time. We also asked her about the comparisons that have been made between the film and Lena Dunham’s Girls, as well as the influence of Woody Allen.
