Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of The Great Gatsby is only a few weeks away from its big screen debut, and I cannot wait to see what he’s brought to the big screen in translating the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald.
Warner Bros. debuted a brilliant new trailer last week, teasing some of the brilliant new songs featured in The Great Gatsby’s soundtrack, that will include new music from Lana Del Rey, Jay-Z, Florence and the Machine, and more.
Following that awesome new trailer, the studio’s UK arm have released a 90-second cut, adding in ever so slight snippets of new footage. But when it comes to the latest movie from Luhrmann, with a cast as amazing as this, we’ll take everything we can get until the movie arrives.
From the uniquely imaginative mind of writer/producer/director Baz Luhrmann comes the new big screen adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, The Great Gatsby. The filmmaker will create his own distinctive visual interpretation of the classic story, bringing the period to life in a way that has never been seen before, in a film starring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role.
“The Great Gatsby” follows Fitzgerald-like, would-be writer Nick Carraway as he leaves the Midwest and comes to New York City in the spring of 1922, an era of loosening morals, glittering jazz and bootleg kings. Chasing his own American Dream, Nick lands next door to a mysterious, party-giving millionaire, Jay Gatsby, and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy, and her philandering, blue-blooded husband, Tom Buchanan. It is thus that Nick is drawn into the captivating world of the super-rich, their illusions, loves and deceits. As Nick bears witness, within and without the world he inhabits, he pens a tale of impossible love, incorruptible dreams and high-octane tragedy, and holds a mirror to our own modern times and struggles.
Leonardo DiCaprio takes the titular leading role in the all-star cast, starring alongside Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Jason Clarke, Elizabeth Debicki, and Amitabh Bachchan.
Luhrmann is directing from a script he co-wrote with past collaborator Craig Pearce (Moulin Rouge!, Romeo + Juliet).
The film’s soundtrack will be released a few days ahead of the film’s release across the Atlantic, and I’m rather hoping it will top the charts. Given how immensely promising the snippets of Lana Del Rey’s Young and Beautiful and Florence and the Machine’s Over the Love are, I really wouldn’t be surprised if the record reaches #1 next month.
The Great Gatsby will be released in 3D on May 10th in the US. It will then be opening this year’s Cannes Film Festival on 15th May, before its UK release date, set for a day earlier than expected on 16th May. For now, here’s the latest trailer recut for our shores to set the tone. I can’t wait.
