This is a film I’m really, really looking forward to. Last year, we got to see Bradley Cooper take a very impressive turn leading what became a stellar box office success in Limitless, and this year should be another great one for the rising star.

He’ll be starring opposite Ryan Gosling in Derek Cianfrance’s generational crime drama The Place Beyond The Pines (you just know that’s going to be immense), David O. Russell’s The Silver Linings Playbook along with his Limitless star Robert De Niro, and before all that, his latest film The Words will be going to Sundance Film Festival later this month.

EW have just got the first poster for the film, and Collider have a nice new set of images, and they’re all looking excellent. The film has a fantastic cast starring alongside Cooper, including Olivia Wilde, Zoe Saldana, Ben Barnes, Jeremy Irons, Dennis Quaid, and J.K. Simmons. It’s been co-written and -directed by Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal, writers on TRON: Legacy (which of course also starred Olivia Wilde), who wrote the script more than a decade ago. It’s been a long time coming for the pair, and it’s great to see that they’ve lined up such a fantastic cast for what should be a brilliant film. Here’s what the official synopsis looks like:

Rory Jansen, a struggling writer, aspires to be the next great literary voice. When he discovers a lost manuscript in a weathered attaché case, he realizes he possesses something extraordinary that he desperately wishes he had created. Rory decides to pass the work off as his own and finally receives the recognition he desperately craves. However, he soon learns that living with his choice will not be as easy as he thought as he faces a moral dilemma that will make him take a hard look at the man he has become.

In their directorial debut, Brian Klugman and Lee Sternthal have crafted a subtle tale that examines how overwhelming desire can lead to unforeseen and unwanted consequences. Bolstered by a strong cast, led by Bradley Cooper and Jeremy Irons, The Words adeptly assembles multiple narratives that reveal how one man’s lost legacy holds the life of another man captive.

Speaking to EW, Sternthal and Klugman said,

“We started by talking about writers and their lost work. What if you lost all your work? How long would it take you to move on?” says Sternthal.

“That led us to a question, what if you found the work?” Klugman adds.

Olivia Wilde co-stars as “someone who wants to be a great writer, and also wants to know the truth about what happened with this book,” Sternthal says.

The Words will be going to Sundance out in the States for its premiere, playing at four screenings between 27th and 29th January, including the closing day of the festival. With a bit of luck, it will be received with rapturous applause, and get picked up for distribution both across the Atlantic and here at home. And with a bit more luck, it’ll be one of the films selected for our own Sundance festival, coming to London in April for the first time. More news as we get it. For now, the first poster and the new images to enjoy. As usual, click to enlarge.

The reboot of the franchise was desperately needed and JJ Abrams’ first instalment was a sensational shot in the arm for a series that had become bogged down since the high water mark of First Contact.

What is not especially welcome news is that Abrams is looking at shooting the sequel on film and then post-converting it into 3D. Obviously the “shooting on film” bit is not of concern, it is the dreaded “post-conversion” which is troubling, given the poor application of the technique up until now.

JJ Abrams is no mug and has certainly proved himself a steady and dependable pair of hands so far, but this does very much feel like a step in the wrong direction. At a time when (at least here in the UK), 3D ticket sales are on the wane, it seems unnecessary to gear up for a post-conversion.

Having said that, it might yet prove to be an astute move. Prior success or not, Abrams is as susceptible as anyone to studio pressure and may have therefore negotiated a deal to post-convert, hoping that either 3D will have fallen out of favour by then and he won’t need to, or that the technology will have improved, leaving the results more impressive. Either way, that is a massive leap of speculation on my part and in no way grounded in any sort of information or insight.

JJ Abrams also wants to shoot some of the film in IMAX format, which he is thoroughly enthusiastic about, though he remains predictably tight-lipped about story arcs, characters, villains and the like, all of which will no doubt unfold in due course.

MTV have this story, together with a few more quotes from Abrams regarding his aspirations for the sequel.

Abrams 2009 movie, Star Trek. I say May 17th, that is according to Deadline and no doubt that date with be for the North American market but since it’s 11pm now in the UK, my guess is that most people reading HeyUGuys are in the US so this one is for you!! My hope however is that the UK will get it around the same time, even though it does seem a very long way away.

Deadline report that Paramount have snapped up the date which will fall on pre-Memorial Weekend after the news that Sony have moved Roland Emmerich’s Singularity back to November 2013.

For now, that’s all folks but great to see Star Trek 2 movie forward and oh, by the way, it’s also going to be in 3D! Thoughts on that? I am quite looking forward to seeing The Enterprise flying into my face!

After months of speculation, JJ Abrams has finally gone ahead and confirmed what we were all expecting anyway: he’s going to direct Star Trek XII. Or II. Whatever it’s going to be called, he’s directing it.

Despite the phenomenal success of 2009’s critically acclaimed reboot the Star Trek sequel has faced a number of delays, not least of which was the fact that Abrams was himself committed to directing this summer’s Super 8 as well as producing the forthcoming Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol. On top of that, co-writer Alex Kurtzman has been working on his own directorial debut, Welcome to People, meaning that Star Trek’s so-called ‘supreme court’ has been stretched pretty thin of late – so much so, in fact, that Paramount had previously confirmed that the film would not meet its already announced release date of June 29th 2012, a spot that has now been taken by G.I Joe 2: Retaliation.

Still, the stars are finally aligning for the new crew of the Starship Enterprise; work on the long in development script will reportedly be complete by the end of this month with shooting beginning sometime during the winter (most signs suggest a January stardate – I mean start date; sorry). The studio has already exercised its options on the cast, meaning that Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and Anton Yelchin will all be returning to the roles they first played in the 2009 film.

Look for the Star Trek sequel to warp into cinemas anywhere from Christmas 2012 to summer 2013.

We’ve seen the film and reviewed it here and it’s unlikely you’ll see this poster in the wild so it’s interesting to bring this to you international variant. In truth it’s far more obvious and less interesting than this one and sadly opts for our old friends Mr. Orange and Mr. Blue.

And I can work out that Zoe Saldana’s name is emblaoned across the poster (the word Avatar rathe rgives that away) but I’d be really interested to know what is written above the title, particularly as the words NON-STOP are untranslated. Answers on a postcard to the usual address.

Here’s the poster,

Today, we are delighted to bring you some splendid shots of the female leads of these two films, each sporting some hefty firepower. Saldana undoubtedly has the upper hand, wielding as she is a rocket launcher. Kate Bosworth by contrast, must content herself with a shotgun, though she looks pretty purposeful with it and one cannot escape the feeling that she ought not to be trifled with.

We’re not going to pretend that we expect these two films to be companion pieces to each other, but the pictures are cool, so here you are.

Beginning in the Colombian capital in 1992, a young woman named Cataleya witnesses the death of both parents via the local crime lord. After a genuinely exciting and action-packed chase scene (think a mini Bourne scarpering around, and replace Tangier with the back streets of Bogota) the plucky tween manages to escape her captors and find her way to US shores, where she begins to rebuild her life by hooking up with her tough, yet nurturing uncle (Cliff Curtis), whom she is insistent on teaching her how to be a professional hitwoman.

The film then brings us in to present day, where Cataleya, now in her early thirties (and played by the luminous Zoe Saldana) is a lean, mean, killing machine who has made good on her career plans. Still unable to find her intended target, due to his cover being guarded by a shady operative from the CIA (wouldn’t she just venture back down there anyway?) she presses on regardless, forsaking love and a normal life in her pursuit for retribution.

The first 20 minutes or so of Colombiana suggests a Latino-flavoured, high-octane remake of Leon may be on the cards, but unfortunately, the film pretty much runs out of steam shortly after Saldana is revealed as the grown-up Cataleya. This is not to suggest that any fault lies with the actress. She actually gives it everything and really helps sells the preposterous notion of the methodical female assassin with acute, almost superhuman, combat training (and unlike Angelina Jolie in last year’s Salt, regardless of her svelte figure and small frame, she looks like she could feasible kick some serious ass). She’s let down by a barebones script (the likes of which Besson and co-scribe, Robert Mark Kamen, most probably knocked out over a bottle or two of Chateauneuf du Pape) that, while establishing why she would look to avenge the death of her parents, never really explores her inner psyche or the reasons behind her wanting to work in such a crazy profession. The film also exists within a reality-bending universe from that of our own, where the software on the PC belonging to dedicated cop (British export Lennie James) is capable of doing anything and finding anyone at the touch of a button, and all air conditioning vents magically possess ample space for a human figure to freely roam around in.

The film also features perhaps one of the worst-written male parts ever, in the form of Catalina’s bit on the side – an artist named Danny (Michael Vartan) who she has managed to keep at arms length, emotionally. He is one of the least ineffectual characters ever to grace the big screen (or maybe this is Besson having a sly role-reversal dig at the tropes which are usually attached to this male-dominated genre?)

None of these gripes will probably bother the intended core demographic (horny, male adolescents) and when the director goes by the moniker Oliver Megaton, this was hardly going to be a subtle portrayal of one women’s emotional plight at losing both parents at an early age. Nevertheless, the film suffers greatly from a severely underwritten and uninteresting lead role (despite the best efforts of Saldana), and even the potentially interesting euro-flavoured aesthetic, mixed in with the Michael Bay and Tony Scott school of big bangs fails to come alive, and (even more annoyingly for a film of this kind) grows increasingly tiresome and lifeless as the action intensifies.

If you’re looking for a strong female character to hold your attention in this kind of film, do yourself a favour and rent Besson’s own Nikita (and the aforementioned Leon, for that matter). Unlike Colombiana, both films take a similar character and really make you care about her predicament and journey.

**~~~ (2/5)

This new clip from Olivier Megaton’s Colombiana is a far more subtle affair than the guns-a-blazing whip crack action the previously seen trailer gave up and Megaton certainly knows how to set up his action scenes.

Luc Besson produced this revenge thriller and it’s good to see Saldana leading here. While it may not be a huge depature from other favourites in the Besson canon this film has a certain style to it and his leading lady knows how to make this stuff look good.

There’s a new poster is the offing tonight and it’s a pretty decent image, the tagline doing in words what the trailer’s shots of a lithe Saldana kicking ass in her underwear did so often.

The film is looking likely for a September release in the US and beyond. Saldana is more than capable of stepping out of the supporting spotlight she’s been in so far, and the trick will be giving us something to care about in this tale, let’s hope that she’s not the unstoppable killing machine some lazy genre films seem to turn their heroes and heroines into.

Here’s your poter, go wild.

Luc Besson clearly has a thing for girls and guns with Zoe Saldana becoming the latest to sign up in Colombiana, a revenge thriller with all the hallmarks of Besson’s best work.

Sony Pictures have released a trailer for Olivier Megaton’s latest film and it’s not a subtle two and a half minutes, instead we get a nicely rhythmic succession of cute quips and blazing guns with the sadly obligatory Saldana underwear shot all very much in the vein of Taken and the Transporter films.

There’s nothing about this trailer to suggest it’ll break moulds but Megaton seems to know how to handle the action cliches with a decent eye and Saldana is one of the fastest rising stars in the business and Colombiana is the biggest leading role she’s had.

It wont surprise you – imagine a Luc Besson produced female assassin revenge film starring Zoe Saldana and you’ll have saved yourself a couple of minutes, but for curious action fans here’s a one line synopsis first, then the trailer. Ready?

After witnessing her parents being murdered by the mob, 10-year-old Cataleya sets off on a 15-year journey for revenge that takes her across the world.

Here’s the trailer,

As soon as Avatar finished its super successful cinema run rumours emerged that the world hadn’t seen the end of the story, and that we were to expect a second chapter to Jake and Neytiri’s adventures in Pandora.

The Hollywood Reporter has now announced that director James Cameron is getting ready to film not one, but two sequels to his “biggest blockbuster of all time” masterpiece.

The two movies are scheduled to come out over the course of the next four years, the first in December 2014 and the second a year after that, and Lightstorm Entertainment (Cameron’s company) is now just starting to get into gear for the mammoth work that such a complex and motion capture technology advanced production will require.

Cameron is selling his old office building in Santa Monica (currently listed at $11.85 million), probably in an attempt to at least reduce the inevitable work-related stress by having his offices and studio consolidated into one location not far from his home, down the coast of Malibu.

It is likely that Wellington based WETA, the special effects company which looked after the visual effects in the Lord of the Rings saga as well as those in the first Avatar, will be employed again, although Cameron hasn’t confirmed as of yet whether live action scenes will take place in New Zealand as they were for the first Avatar.

While fans will have to wait quite a while, the buzz around the Avatar sequels production has already started and looks like it could rival that of Peter Jackson’s long awaited The Hobbit. More news to come soon…

Report by Margherita Pellegrino.

Landon.

This is a lesson is how to cut a trailer that makes you want to go and see a movie, especially when the subject matter for the movie looks so crazy!

Synopsis: BURNING PALMS is a subversive tale that interlaces five stories where no taboo is left unexplored. Framed as a graphic novel come to life, the film unfolds in five popular neighborhoods of Los Angeles as each character careens toward a dark and often comic fate.

Just leave them wanting more…. and it has… Enjoy!

No UK release date for this one yet but we’ll keep you posted. According to the trailer, it’s out on the 14th January in the US… which is now. Weird that we’ve not seen any marketing for the movie until now unless it comepletly passed us by which isn’t really good either!

Firstly, Liam Neeson is to begin filming Taken 2 in the spring of 2011, though no director is attached yet. The sequel is being produced by the EuropaCorp studio, as was the case with the first film. EuropaCorp are also looking at spinning off a TV show from Taken (along the lines of The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Blade) but will wait to make a final decision until the sequel has begun shooting.

Nikita, also based on a EuropaCorp property, now has a full season booked for TV and they are developing a series from the Transporter franchise as well. You will recall that Jason Statham starred in all three entries as the no-nonsense, ass-kicking driver, though it seems highly unlikely that he will make the move to the TV series. Shooting on a 12 episode season is scheduled for the new year, with a budget for the season of $48m. EuropaCorp say they have a US distributor on board (though decline to say which one) and are aiming for the season to start screening in November 2011.

Luc Besson, who was involved with Taken and The Transporter series in an exec-producer and writer capacity and who also directed Nikita, is keeping himself busy as well. His latest sci-fi directorial effort, Lock Out, about an astronaut (played by Guy Pearce) who must rescue Lost’s Maggie Grace from a riot on board an orbiting space station, is shooting in Poland and should wrap by the end of the year. Colombiana, which Besson wrote, is due for release September 2011. The film, directed by Oliver Megaton of Transporter 3 “fame”, stars Zoe Saldana (Avatar, Star Trek) as a woman who grows up to be a stone cold assassin, having watched her parents be murdered when she was a child.

We think that’s it for the time being! Check out Deadline for more detail on these various intriguing projects.

It’s basically a hunting scene and you can see why it found its way onto the digital cutting room floor, but it’s still nice to see more of the world.

Here’s everything you need to know about the new edition, and if you want to see more (and you have the original Avatar Blu-ray) you can right now..

Click Here to see the clip, which must be considered a tease as the resolution is nowhere near what it needs to be to get the full effect, but for those desperate for more from the gushing box of Pandora this will do nicely.

We’ve had a couple of trailers for the re-released version (here and here) and now Twentieth Century Fox have sent us two brand new images for the biggest movie of all time where we get to see some more creatures that I don’t remember seeing in the original movie (please correct me if I’m wrong) and one of Jake Sulley (Sam Worthington) and Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) flying across Pandora.

James Cameron’s Avatar is coming back to cinema screens on August 27th and you can enter tickets to a screening at the Waterloo IMAX right here.

Check out these new images and click them to enlarge.

And if you hadn’t heard the news, here’s the official word that was announced a a while ago:

LONDON (July 8, 2010) _ Twentieth Century Fox and James Cameron today announced that AVATAR: SPECIAL EDITION will be released in cinemas on Friday, 27th August, in a limited engagement and exclusively in Digital 3D and IMAX 3D.

This version of Cameron’s history-making and groundbreaking epic will include more than eight minutes of new footage. Since – and largely as of result of — AVATAR’s release last December, the number of available digital 3D screens has exploded, and moviegoers who missed experiencing the film in 3D will now have that opportunity.

Commented James Cameron: “Audiences repeatedly told me they wanted more of Pandora, and wished they could have stayed there longer. So we’re making that possible. AVATAR: SPECIAL EDITION will be exclusively in 3D, and will have eight minutes of never before seen footage, including new creatures and action scenes. Whether you already love the movie, or you’ve never seen it, with this Special Edition, you’ll be seeing it like never before.”

Commented Fox Filmed Entertainment chairmen and CEOs, Jim Gianopulos and Tom Rothman: “AVATAR: SPECIAL EDITION is especially gratifying, because not only has AVATAR become one of the most beloved films in history, but after its initial theatrical release, we have been inundated with requests to re-release the film in theaters in 3D. Equally important, we’re thrilled that Jim Cameron is able to give audiences even more of what they loved about AVATAR.”

The Oscar® and Golden Globe® winning epic is the highest grossing film of all time, taking in over $2.7 billion in worldwide box office. It is also the top-selling Blu-ray disc of all time. Director James Cameron takes audiences to a spectacular world beyond imagination, where a reluctant hero embarks on a journey of redemption and discovery as he leads a heroic battle to save a civilization. AVATAR delivers a fully immersive cinematic experience of a new kind, where the revolutionary technology invented to make the film disappears into the emotion of the characters and the epic nature of the story.
