Jessica Chastain (The Tree of Life), Joel Edgerton (Warrior) and William Hurt (Into the Wild) will star in a new double feature project from Myriad Pictures.

The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: His and The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby: Hers will explore a couple’s relationship during a difficult time in their marriage from both sides.

Written and directed by Ted Benson (In Defence of Gravity), both films will be stand-alone features, with Myriad CEO Kirk D’Amico saying, “We have to make both films work on their own, both for the buyers but also for the audiences.”

It’s certainly an ambitious idea, but it’s unlikely Chastain, Edgerton and Hurt would agree to sign on anything underdeveloped, as all three seem to be reasonably picky when it comes to taking on roles.

Myriad will pitch the project to prospective buyers at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, so expect it to be a while before this one gets off the ground.

This is one of those films which was caught up in the flurry of late nineties CG infused sci-fi adventures (like the another WB Blu-ray recently released – Mars Attacks!) which looked impressive on release in 1998 but has not weathered well at all. That said, it remains one of those films which I often think of revisiting.

The problem with this is that the film is not good, and the reason I find myself wanting to give it another go is that it is forgetful in the extreme, therefore its faults of design and narrative and shortcomings of script and execution are fresh and new every time I decide to re-watch it. The new Blu-ray release of Stephen Hopkins’ film allows me to revisit all these problems in shiny high definition.

Let’s do positives. The transfer looks good, but not great  and the commentaries (with Hopkins and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman), deleted scenes, music video, short SFX video etc are from the DVD so the HD sheen applied is perhaps the only reason to invest.

Sadly while a lot of the film’s visuals benefit from the Blu-ray transfer there are a number of unforgivably substandard CGI creations, which inevitably decrease the enjoyment, although there is a level of invention in some of the futuristic details implanted into the story no amount of polish could improve the script which misuses both the actors and the legacy of the TV series to create something impossibly bland.

Matt LeBlanc did a good job trying to break out of the lucrative TV shackles but is reduced to one liners from the outset and never given much to do, likewise Gary Oldman is unable to save his turgid characterisation. While it is possible to enjoy the ride it will leave you with no thrill and your heart will remain completely untouched.

Again, if you’re a fan of this film, then the film looks better than ever, but the downside is that you’ve probably already bought the DVD and you may not be looking to grab the blu-ray without something more enticing than a prettier picture.

Lost In Space is out on Blu-ray on the 11th of October.

Ralph Fiennes has assembled a great cast to assist him in bringing one of Shakespeare’s tragedies to the big screen with Gerard Butler, William Hurt, Brian Cox and Vanessa Redgrave all starring in his modern day Iraq War adaptation of Coriolanus.

New photos have emerged today thanks to KinoGallery (through JoBlo) which show off Fiennes and Butler on set and give a detailed look at Fiennes updated setting. Both Fiennes and Butler have played the title role on stage and it’s nice to see Butler getting his teeth into some other than the recent, woeful rom’com’ fare.

Ridley Scott’s take on the Outlaw of Sherwood Forest is one of the most anticipated films of the year and it was this film that opened the Cannes film festival yesterday.

Dave saw the film a few days ago and his review is here and Simon (who is currently in Cannes for HeyUGuys) got to see the movie and his thoughts are here.  The buzz has been cautiously positive thus far, with many people comparing it inevitably to Scott’s last collaboration with Russell Crowe, Gladiator. The stars of Robin Hood were out in force in Cannes last night to promote their film and we’ve got the official pictures from the after show right here which was sponsored by Lancia. Somehow they managed to borrow HeyUGuys private yaught for the event!

It seems a bit odd that Universal Pictures would release a trailer for one of their movies literally a day before release bet I’ll forgive them! I got to see Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott’s new movie, Robin Hood yesterday and you can read my review here.

Robin Hood is to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival this week but we’ve seen it and here’s our review. In the movie, we see Ridley Scott re-team with Russell Crowe in their fifth collaboration together. Many have wondered if Crowe can pull off the task of making a convincing Robin Hood.  Read on to find out what I thought! The cast  includes Cate Blanchett, Matthew Macfadyen, Mark Strong, Oscar Isaac, Kevin Durand, Mark Addy, William Hurt, Danny Huston and Max von Sydow.

This version of Robin Hood looks closely at how Robyn of Loxley becomes the man that we’ve come to know, and how he became one who steals from the rich to give to the poor. We get to see Robin (or Robyn if we believe the fables) fighting to get home after the crusades and how he comes to meet Will Scarlett (Scott Grimes who serves as the comic relief), Little John (Kevin Durand) and Friar Tuck (Mark Addy). Here’s a section of the official synopsis that can explain the wider storyline better than I.

Robin Hood chronicles the life of an expert archer, previously interested only in self-preservation, from his service in King Richard’s army against the French. Upon Richard’s death, Robin travels to Nottingham, a town suffering from the corruption of a despotic sheriff and crippling taxation, where he falls for the spirited widow Lady Marion (Oscar® winner Cate Blanchett), a woman sceptical of the identity and motivations of this crusader from the forest. Hoping to earn the hand of Maid Marion and salvage the village, Robin assembles a gang whose lethal mercenary skills are matched only by its appetite for life. Together, they begin preying on the indulgent upper class to correct injustices under the sheriff.

It’s hard to get away from watching this movie without thinking about Gladiator – how it was shot, the characters involved and how the same team are back again for this movie. Not only was it the same production team behind the movie, it also opens using the same piece of forest that we see in the brilliant opening sequence of Gladiator – just 10 miles from my house! There is a distinctly different look in Robin Hood, and an attack on the castle (which they built when I visited) opens the movie with a bang. Danny Huston plays the part of King Richard, a man ‘bankrupt in both wealth and victory’ as the opening titles tell us.

Mark Strong is the English traitor who strikes a deal with the French King to start an uprising in England – an uprising that would see England become a sitting duck and open for attack. After getting wind of this, William Marshal played by William Hurt alerts the king that he must reunite the country to fend off the French before it’s too late.

Ok, so here’s what you all want to know….. Was the film any good? Well, I’m sure you’ll be pleased to hear that in my opinion, yes it was! The action sequences were excellent as was the fight choreography and especially the horse riding. We’ve seen previous photos from the Pembrokeshire coastline where the finale to the movie occurs, and the spectacle displayed is just wonderful. In fact this movie does a great deal to keep the British Tourist Board happy. The helicopter shots through the lush green hills, the wonderful English forests were all great to see in this big-budget American movie. A shout out has to go to Pinewood Studios who also hosted some of the beach landing shots on their giant water stage. Despite the hundreds of horses, extras and masses of crew on set the end result was awesome and is a scene I’d love to watch over again. It was so good I think a little more should have been made over it!

As an aside, the Robin Hood set was the first that I visited (although off my own back) and all the design (headed by Sonja Klaus) was brilliant – but now that I’ve seen the movie I realised how massively underused it was. Maybe I was trying to spot places I’d been but it was a shame the huge village was seen more during the scene in which it’s burnt down than when it was standing tall! I can’t really say this ruined my experience, just something I noticed and was shocked by since it must have taken months to put together. That said, it was refreshing to see a big budget Hollywood movie that wasn’t obsessed with using CGI. Don’t get me wrong, there is CG used in Robin Hood but most of the external structures you see in the movie were built from scratch and this is a massive plus point for me.

Geography always seems to play a part in these Robin Hood films. It was the same in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. How is it that they can travel from Nottingham to the South Coast of England without getting a sweat on? On a horse it would take 2 or 3 days to travel that distance but I guess it’s Hollywood magic.

Russell Crowe and Cate Blanchett’s on-screen chemistry came across well, but as I said earlier I felt continually reminded of watching Gladiator. Universal are obviously hoping for a sequel as before the credits roll, the text “And so the legend begins” appears on the screen. Matthew Macfadyen as the Sheriff of Nottingham is massively underused but if there’s a sequel, not doubt he’ll have a bigger part to play.  Mark Strong plays as awesome baddie. We know that from Kick-Ass and he does just as well in this. In fact from now on, all badies should be played by Strong!

Here’s some questions I’ve asked myself:

1. Will there be a sequel? Probably.
2. Will I watch it? Absolutely. But I really hope that Crowe sorts his accent out for the next one! Was he from the north, the south, East London or a different country?! I never managed to work it out!
3. Was it better than Robin Hood Prince of Thieves – ummmm….. I’d say it’s a different movie and you can’t compare the two.
4. Was it better than Robin Hood Men in Tights? I’ve never seen it so no comment!
5. Was it better than the Disney animated version of Robin Hood – Of course not!

With only a few short weeks until Ridley Scott’s Robin Hood is unleashed onto our big screens  we’re being inundated with trailers, images and featurettes for the film and while the bulk of the marketing has focused on stars Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett and the mighty Mark Strong this new video is all about the man behind the camera, Ridley Scott.

While most talk surrounding Scott recently has been about his forthcoming return to the Alien series or his Monopoly movie the press push for Robin Hood means Scott will be talking all about the outlaw of Sherwood forest and his merry men, although there’s nothing merry about anything I’ve seen so far.

It’s always interesting to see a director at work and this featurette from Yahoo lifts the veil as we get a good chance to see the man in action.

Robin Hood opens Cannes next month and opens all over the place on the 14th of May.

It’s clearly Robin Hood clip day today as another short moment plucked from Ridley Scott’s latest hits the internet.

This one is in complete contrast to the clip Dave posted earlier, that was all action with arrows flying and lots of faces shouting at each other, this one (from the good people at Moviefone) gives us a good look at the banter between Russell Crowe’s Robin and Cate Blanchett’s Maid Marian.

When this one hits Cannes next month it should hopefully prove to be more than Gladiator in Tights, and we know Scott and Crowe are more than capable of giving us action, and, as this clip shows, there’s some lighter moments in between the arrow slinging and woodland carnage.

Today courtesy of NCM we have a new Robin Hood video which cuts together some new talking heads with the main cast and crew and some footage of the upcoming film.

The interviews focus a lot on the main themes in the film and it certainly sounds like this Robin Hood film is going in different directions to previous films with a much more epic tale and large scale battles.

If Ridley Scott can bring something new to the table then this could definitely turn out to be a worthwhile retelling of the Robin Hood story. What do you think?

It’s scheuled for release May 14th and is yet another movie this year that I cannot wait to see.

In the US, when the Super Bowl comes around, you’ll suddenly see film companies bringing out new trailers and TV spots for their biggest movies as the audience for the game is so huge! Yahoo have released the new Robin Hood TV spot which I’ve embedded below. It’s so odd for me watching this as a lot of the scenes in it I have visited when I went to the set six or so months ago. I recorded my whole experience on video and I’ve put it in a post here.

Robin Hood is directed by Ridley Scott and stars Russell Crowe, Cate Blanchett, Mark Strong, Danny Huston, Matthew Macfadyen and William Hurt. This new TV spot shows us loads of footage that we’ve not seen before and i now want to see this movie more than ever. It looks like Gladiator in a forest!

It’s scheduled for release 14th May.

Proof that Kristen Stewart is not just going to be in Twilight has come in the form of the trailer for The Yellow Handkerchief. The movie stars William Hurt, Maria Bello, Kristen Stewart, Eddie Redmayne and is directed by Udayan Prasad.

There’s no release date in the UK or US for this but it was released in Japan back in April. The fact that this new trailer has been released on Apple though gives us a sign that it’ll be brought to Europe and the US in the not too distant future.
