We got a brilliant new poster and a fantastic set of images for David Cronenberg’s upcoming A Dangerous Method at the end of last month, giving us a great look at the style and intensity we can expect from the BAFTA-nominated director’s next effort.

Yahoo Movies have now got an excellent new clip from the film, entitled A Stupid Mistake, in which Michael Fassbender, playing Carl Jung, professes the guilt of his behaviour and tries to end things with Keira Knightley’s Sabina Spielrein.

“Early in his career, psychiatrist Carl Jung takes on the challenge of a seemingly impossible case, a deeply disturbed, beautiful young woman named Sabina Spielrein. Jung employs his mentor Sigmund Freud’s experimental “talking cure” in treating Sabina and the treatment proves to be successful. This results in Freud and Jung becoming colleagues rather than master and student, but before long, both men are involved with their patient, complicating their relationship.”

Alongside Fassbender playing Jung will be Viggo Mortensen starring as the renowned Sigmund Freud, with the brilliant Vincent Cassel rounding out the supporting cast.

Written by Christopher Hampton, based on his own play The Talking Cure, A Dangerous Method has been screening at a number of festivals in the past few months and been getting a strong reception. It’s getting an Oscar-qualifying run in the States at the moment, opening in both Los Angeles and New York yesterday, but we’ll sadly have to wait a little longer to see it here, with its UK release scheduled for 10th February.

If it does get nominated at the end of January, however, we’ll at least have had time to see the film before the actual Academy Awards ceremony at the end of February, so we’ll be able to judge for ourselves how well it does there, if it were to be nominated. Time will tell. Until then, here’s the great new clip to enjoy.

Keira Knightley and Vincent Cassel round off the main cast for Cronenberg’s adaptation of Christopher Hampton’s play and it’s a handsome looking affair which sees a patient (Knightley) trouble the relationship between Carl Jung (Fassbender) and Sigmund Freud (Mortensen).

Top darts for the casting, let’s hope the film lives up to the high expectations.

Viggo Mortensen reunites with his Eastern Promises and A History of Violence director and is joined by Michael Fassbender, Keria Knightley and Vincent Cassell for this adaptation of Christopher Hampton’s 2002 play The Talking Cure.

The chance to see Fassbender and Mortensen on screen under Cronenberg’s hand is enticing indeed and the recent trailer set things up nicely. This new poster is an improvement on the last one we saw, proving that Photoshop can be used for good once in a while.

Lionsgate are releasing this isn the UK and we saw a little of the film at Big Screen recently. Definitely one to keep an eye on.

Here’s the poster, clicken it to enlargify.

Looking a lot like Michael Fassbender and Viggo Mortensen are popping their heads around from behind the DVD cover of The Duchess there at least cannot be any mistaking how this one is being sold. Shame that Vincent Cassell didn’t get a look in.

The film, adapted from Christopher Hampton’s play, is playing at Venice next month and has a synopsis which looks something like this,

For his third consecutive collaboration with Viggo Mortensen, David Cronenberg adapts Christopher Hampton’s 2002 stage play concerning the turbulent relationship between Carl Jung (Michael Fassbender) and his mentor Sigmund Freud (Mortensen) as they struggle to treat a troubled patient (Kiera Knightley).

Here’s your facey poster,

Vincent Cassel and Rosario Dawson are in negotiations to fill the other lead spots, alongside James McAvoy, in Danny Boyle’s follow-up to this year’s fantastic 127 Hours, Deadline report.

Boyle will be directing the 2012 Olympic Games opening ceremony, so production on Trance will start this autumn in London until he switches projects in January, and then he’ll return to the film once the Olympics are over with an eye to release in March 2013.

The script for Trance has been penned by Joe Ahearne, nominated for a BAFTA for his work directing Doctor Who, and past frequent Boyle collaborator, John Hodge, who has worked with Boyle writing Shallow Grave, Trainspotting, A Life Less Ordinary, and The Beach. The pair haven’t worked on a project together in over a decade, so it will be great to see them back together on Trance, which is thought will have the same feel as Boyle’s earlier films, Trainspotting and Shallow Grave.

According to Deadline,

“McAvoy’s in talks to play the inside man in an art heist that goes wrong. He runs afoul of an accomplice (Cassel), and Dawson will play a woman who develops an unusual relationship with both men”

Dawson was last seen here in Unstoppable opposite Denzel Washington and Chris Pine in a role she was brilliant playing, and will next be seen in Zookeeper, opposite Kevin James, and Ten Year, opposite Channing Tatum and Kate Mara. Cassel was last seen here in Black Swan, which he did fantastically, and will next be seen in David Cronenberg’s A Dangerous Method alongside Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender, and Keira Knightley.

Boyle is a director who has had tremendous success with his films to date, and there’s no reason to expect that Trance will be any different. Always working on a modest budget, he nevertheless manages to make a little money go a very long way, and his projects are definitely something to look forward to. The cast for Trance is shaping up nicely, and March 2013 is a month we should all pencil into our diaries.

Entering the crowded arena of horror movies swoops Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan, with grace and style enough to show up the borrowed nostalgia scares and toothless gorefrenzies of modern horror films for what they are, and in doing so giving me one of my favourite films of last year.

The merits of Darren Aronofsky’s latest were well argued in Ian’s review of the film back in January, and it was a clear favourite when it played the festival circuit last year. Now that the film arrives on Blu-ray and DVD we can revisit it to see if the dark tale of perfection and perception holds up to a second viewing. Short answer: It does. Here’s why.

I cannot deny there was a tangible thrill when I opened the envelope containing the Black Swan Blu-ray; the film’s release in Japan has just pushed its earning past the $300 million mark proving two things: audiences will flock to challenging adult drama and that Aronofsky continues to develop as a filmmaker capable of producing work to critical and commercial acclaim.

Aronofsky’s film of a fragile ballet dancer finding her dark side in order to play both the white and black swan in Swan Lake is a masterclass is disorientation and seduction with Natalie Portman deservedly winning her Oscar for her portrayal of Nina, and the transformation she undergoes is painful and carefully handled. We are drawn into her rapidly enfolding world as the preparations for the opening night see her losing her grip on reality, ‘helped’ by Vincent Cassel’s domineering director and Mila Kunis’s flirtatious understudy. Aronofsky peppers the film with visual tricks and eerie images, but we never lose focus on Nina’s struggle and doomed triumph.

It’s my favourite of the director’s film; it’s an eerie and very serious fairy tale, dripping with paranoia and we watch the onslaught of a dozen psychological and physical terrors on our Swan Queen again and again, not because she it is fun to watch her crumble beneath the numerous weights, rather it is the constant tension between the light and dark, the real world and Nina’s constructed reality which gives the film its momentum.

The Blu-ray is a shining example of delivering a polished high-definition transfer of a film and embellishing it with some decent extras. Here we have a mixture of superficial portraits of its stars as well an essential ninety minute documentary, entitled Metamorphosis, taking us from the initial ideas, through design, choreography, shooting and post production. Aronosfksy and his cast and crew are a rightfully proud and gregarious bunch, happy to go into details of the challenges of shooting in a bitterly cold December New York as they are to tease us with alternative visual effects for the final transformation. Some of the film’s obvious symbolic elements, the overarching light and dark is one example, are given time and are illuminated by the comments made. The documentary’s style borrows from the vérité nature of the film itself and a feeling creeps upon you that Arnofsky’s passion pervades the production completely; the film is brighter and sharper on a second watch after the documentary has been viewed.

Character profiles of the main players are a nice thought as the film invites you to dive beneath the surface but the pleasure of this film is to notice what is not obvious, the moments that passed you by in the cinema, the moment the dance troupe are made up of Nina’s dopplegangers is one I missed and I have a feeling that there are more to be found. Aronofsky has created a disquieting and powerful film, reminiscent of Roeg’s Don’t Look Now and elements had me in mind of a lost Disney Horror The Watcher in the Woods, but this is so much more than The Red Shoes remade by David Lynch. The transfer is solid, the sound design tremendously effective in any half decent home cinema system and I was surprised at how little the film lost in translation to the smaller screen. If you haven’t seen it, you should and quickly.

Film: ****~ (4/5)

This video is part of the Special Features on the Blu-ray and if there’s a film that benefits from a thorough deconstruction it’s this one, thankfully there’s an extensive breakdown of the film included on the disc, with contributions from cast and crew with Aronofsky in particular in a generous mood and watching how he builds the mental landscape of Natalie Portman’s fragile Nina is fascinating.

We’ve got a clip for you which hints at the ideas behind the film, the comprehensive extras are well worth a look.

Four law-breaking teenagers (who we are introduced to via a nifty pre-credits sequence) find themselves incarcerated in a detention centre where revenge and retribution are a daily occurrence where the guards offer little in the way of sympathy or empathy. One of the youngsters, 17 year-old Butch (Adam Butcher), remanded for a violent attack on an officer at his previous institute, struggles to curb his aggression towards the authorities and some of his fellow intimidating inmates.

A film like this really lives or dies on the believability of the cast and Chapiron has assembled an authentic-looking bunch of young actors. They all acquit themselves extremely well and the lead Butcher (in the Ray Winstone role from the original) is particularly impressive, managing to convey a stoic sensitivity underneath his intense exterior, which is all suppressed in anger and rage. Special mention must go out to Taylor Poulin too, who plays the chubby and bullying sociopath Banks. He’s a thoroughly nasty piece of work and Poulin (who was actually released from a juvenile detention centre days before shooting commenced) does a great job of portraying this extremely unlikeable character, who manages to make your skin crawl and helps generate an acute feeling of unease every time he enters the frame – making his inevitable comeuppance perhaps more satisfying than intended.

The young Parisian filmmaker also resists the urge to crank up it up with the same visual flair he imbued with his feature length debut, Sheitan. While that film had a number of self-conscious horror flourishes and an OTT Vincent Cassel performance, the rawness and lack of style here works perfectly in capturing the thoroughly unglamorous surroundings. Colours are muted, and there’s a predominant green and blue pastel-y hue to the corridors, holding cells and sleeping areas.

To give it any kind of stylised edge and instil it with heightened sense of reality would have been a complete contrast to the subject matter, which it’s to the maker’s credit that they adhere surprisingly closely to the BBC version. Some of the insights into prison life may feel a little clichéd given the amount of similarly-themed films we’ve been privy to during the last thirty years or so, but in defence of this, the behaviour and actions of the characters are presumably still very much prevalent in a real-life youth prison environment, where a survival of the fittest mentality is a indisputable requirement.

Dog Pound is not without its flaws and some of these are partly due to the fact that it’s difficult to evade inevitable comparisons with the original source material. The fate and demise of one character doesn’t come anywhere close to having the same impact as the previous version, and there are a couple of incidents in which the outcome is rather predictable. For the most part however, this is an impressively directed and well-acted piece which manages to sneak the odd piece of social commentary in there (the anger management scene has a bitter irony about it) without it ever feeling forced.

The film’s ending takes a slight departure from the original’s, but in many ways, it’s just as powerful, and Chapiron’s insightful and grounded approach to the subject matter (which could have easily spiralled into sensationalism in lesser hands), definitely marks him as a talent to watch out for.

***½~ (3.5/5)

Dog Pound is now available on DVD and Blu-Ray through Optimum Releasing or availble to rent here.

The vivid and gripping Black Swan is one part Jungian psycho thriller, one part horror movie, and one part backstage drama, and while not the masterpiece some have proclaimed it to be, it’s a throughly entertaining ride, driven by an enthralling and very physical performance from Golden Globe winner Natalie Portman.

Nina Sayers (Natalie Portman) is a dancer with a New York ballet company, a clearly neurotic young woman who is nonetheless an ambitious perfectionist. The company’s bullying artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) decides to stage a reimagined version of ‘Swan Lake’ to launch their new season, and he seizes the opportunity to bring a dancer up from the ranks to replace the company’s aging prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Winona Ryder) in the dual lead roles of the Swan Queen (the White and Black Swans). After narrowing the field amongst the company’s very competitive soloists, who all desperately want the role, Thomas chooses Nina for the lead. While she is perfect as the virginal and pure White Swan, the question remains whether Nina can find and embrace within herself the darkness required to effectively portray the villain of the piece, the Black Swan.

The film cleverly plays out the duality that is the heart of the story (good/evil, black/white, introversion/extroversion) through constant visual doubling and POV shots seen as reflections; it would be an amusing exercise to count the number of times Nina scrutinises herself in windows and mirrors (a new drinking game, perhaps). All of the other key women in the film, who represent either an aspect of her character or a potential outcome for a ballerina, strongly resemble Nina also: her mother Erica (Barbara Hershey), a former dancer who smothers her daughter while pushing her to have the kind of celebrated career she didn’t have; the earthy and uninhibited Lily (Mila Kunis), the extrovert to Nina’s introvert; and prima ballerina Beth, depressed and unable to accept that her career is at an end.

Pushed by her mother and Thomas to succeed at all costs, and pulled by the beguiling (and possibly threatening) Lily to unleash her sensuality by indulging in hedonistic abandon, Nina struggles to engage with her shadow and become the complete artist she desperately longs to be. As her tentative grip on reality loosens, the reliability of Nina’s point of view gradually disintegrates as she begins to see herself not just in reflective surfaces, but literally in the faces of others. Natalie Portman’s delicate beauty has always suggested fragility, and it has never been utilised more effectively than it is here; the great supporting players certainly hold their end up, but every one of the film’s 110 minutes belong to Ms. Portman, who shoulders the burden of her role with complete commitment.

Black Swan owes a small debt to Roman Polanski’s mid ’60s masterpiece Repulsion, another tale of a repressed beauty’s psychological breakdown as she struggles to deal with her baser instincts; the scenes of Nina walking the narrow halls of the apartment she shares with her mother feel like a direct nod to the claustrophobic halls of Catherine Deneuve’s apartment. There are hints of David Cronenbergian body horror as well, with bizarre physical transformation that harks back to The Fly and wince inducing shots of damaged digits and other mangled flesh. Composer Clint Mansell does his part to up the film’s shock ante too, blending Tchaikovsky’s dramatic ‘Swan Lake’ with his own score, laying great stabs, slashes and punches of music over top of the film’s ‘behind you!’ moments.

The film’s sheer visual and aural bombast does mean that it teeters on the brink of overwrought many times, and as clever as it is, its technical precision feels too mechanical and calculated at times. For me, director Aronofsky has yet to surpass his eyeball-searing, stomach-churning addiction drama Requiem For a Dream, but Black Swan is an intriguing, and, dare I say it, fun film, and the wonderful Natalie Portman is fully deserving of the many accolades and statuettes she will receive during the current awards season (even if that does mean my own favourite Jennifer Lawrence being beaten out).

***~~ (3/5)

Amongst the many, many highlights has been interviewing one of my favourite actors of all time (the great Vincent Cassel) during the Black Swan premiere at this year’s London Film Festival. To be stood face-to-face with such a tremendous and commanding talent was a huge thrill.

I’ve also had the opportunity to talk to two directors whose films have really resonated with me during different periods in my life. In September I attended the press junket for 3D kids feature The Hole and interviewed director Joe Dante. It was a surreal and wonderful feeling to be sat talking to the guy whose films (especially the likes of Explorers, Innerspace and The ‘Burbs) were virtually on a continuous loop in the family VHS player, 20 or so years back. Dante’s love of fantasy and trash cinema really shone through in the short period I had with him, and I think he could sense he was in the presence of a like-minded fan of those films he was referencing. When I presented him with an old, dog-eared Gremlins Making-of magazine to autograph, he was more than happy to sign it. Geek nirvana.

Attending the premiere for Jackass 3D at the BFI Imax, I found myself positioned next to the actual camera crew from the film and TV series, who were shooting additional material for the Film’s DVD release. Executive Producer Spike Jonze was one of the first up the red carpet, and upon finishing the promotional rounds (which was clearly something he was uncomfortable with) in a down-to-earth and very un-Hollywood move, he decided to hang out and chat with the Jackass crew while the rest of the stars appeared. This afforded me to chance to have a little off-camera chat with him myself in the interim – an amazing occasion which caused more than a few high-fives on the way home afterwards with my friend Luke, who was filming the event.

I’m truly grateful for having had the chance to meet and chat to figures from the industry who mean so much to me on a personal level, and I’m really excited as to what next year will hold. If the latter part of 2010 is anything to go by, there will be many more Jim’ll Fix It-type scenarios to come.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, Black Swan stars Natalie Portman, Mila Kunis, Winona Ryder, Vincent Cassel and Barbara Hershey.

Black Swan has already picked up rave reviews after premiering at the 35th Toronto International Film Festival and recently received four nominations for the 2011 Film Independent Spirit Awards, set to be held on February 26, 2011.

Synopsis: A New York City ballet company is producing Swan Lake, and director Thomas Leroy (Cassel) decides to replace prima ballerina Beth MacIntyre (Ryder) with ballerina Nina (Portman). Nina lives with Erica (Hershey), her overbearing mother and a former ballerina. Nina finds competition in new dancer Lily (Kunis). Swan Lake requires a ballerina who can play the innocent White Swan, which fits Nina, and the sensual Black Swan, which fits Lily. The dancers’ rivalry changes into a bizarre friendship, and Nina begins exploring a dark side of herself.

The other is a short featurette with Natalie Portman talking about her long involvement with the project and her director chiming in to praise her and add his own perspective on her fractured character – it’s well worth a watch, like so much of what we’ve seen so far from this film.

Here’s the new clip from Yahoo,

It’s a psychological thriller with added ballet and has Vincent Cassel shouting at Natalie Portman a lot and frankly everything I’ve seen so far* connected to this film has been pretty much spot on.

Below are two new TV spots which daub footage from the film with scores and quotes from critics which is a touch pointless as the footage itself is enticing enough for any sane person’s interest to be aroused, but there’s a few snippets of new footage to keep fans happy.

Here’s the two spots,

* Yes, it did play at this year’s LFF**.

** Yes, I did miss it.***

*** Yes, I am still annoyed at that fact.
