We’ve just been sent this world exclusive clip from new movie, Ultramarines: A Warhammer 40,000 Movie. It features the voices of Terence Stamp, John Hurt, Sean Pertwee, Steven Waddington, Donald Sumpter, Johnny Harris and is directed by Martyn Pick.

Synopsis: For the first time ever, a feature film based on Games Workshop’s phenomenally popular Warhammer 40,000 science fantasy universe has been bought to screen – a cause for celebration for British film makers Codex Pictures and dedicated Warhammer 40,000 fans worldwide.

Employing a rich, atmosphere-laden CGI animation style, ULTRAMARINES: A WARHAMMER 40,000 MOVIE is available now as a two-disc special edition collector’s set in a striking original SteelBook™ case, including bonus features and a specially commissioned graphic ‘prequel’ novel. Warhammer fans are getting their very own CG animated film, Ultramarines. Directed by Martin Pick and written by Dan Abnett with the voice talents of Terence Stamp and Sean Pertwee, and today brings a new trailer to whet appetites and chew bubble gum.

We’ve been following this one for a while, and spoke to the director earlier in the year and though I’m not at all familiar with the world I reckon this trailer could convert some of the non believers.

This new trailer gives far more away than the previous teaser, which was clearly aimed at the fans, and now we get to see a lot more action and shouting.

A huge amount of thanking goes Empire’s way.

Warhammer 40,ooo (40K to those in the know), the tabletop miniature war-game which has so far been adapted for game and novel spin-offs, is due for the big-screen treatment. An animated movie based on Games Workshop’s Ultramarine’s title was first announced on 2009′s ‘Game Day’.

Combining the voice acting talents of Terrence Stamp, Sean Pertwee and John Hurt and the animated facial capture techniques of Image Metrics, the film’s promotional campaign hints towards a 2010 release.

Rendered in 3D, this action epic appears to be taking an atmospheric and sombre approach to the material, a moody score standing in for any real action. The trailer, courtesy of Quiet Earth, gives little away; a mistake for an adaptation of a war-game few have ever heard of. Presented in 3D, the general audience will likely need a little more teasing if they are going to pay the extra for the experience.

www.UltramarinesTheMovie.com has announced the director and writer for the Games Workshop feature length CGI film.

The director is Martyn Pick, a relative unknown who has not directed a feature length film so far in his career. He does however have a strong background in animation, adverts, and promotional films, and has apparently landed the job because of his strong ability to fuse live-action with animation. Anybody interested in viewing Pick’s work should check out Franny Armstrong’s documentary The Age of Stupid, as Pick directed all of the animation in the film.

The writer for Ultramarines has been announced as none other than Dan Abnett, the best-selling author who has written dozens of Warhammer 40,000 novels and graphic novels which have sold over a million copies worldwide. He was an obvious choice due to his background with Games Workshop, his extensive knowledge of Warhammer 40K, and his writing ability. The film industry has a history of using inherently geeky things as the inspiration for movies. For years now comics and computer games have been adapted into summer blockbusters, The Lord of The Rings books became one of the most popular film trilogies of all time, and even Dungeons and Dragons has been turned into two (awful) films.

Meanwhile, the exceedingly geeky world of tabletop war games has, somewhat inexplicably, avoided adaptation. Until now.

Games Workshop, the company behind the hugely successful Warhammer and Warhammer 40K games have announced production of a feature length animated film.

The feature, titled Ultramarines will be made by UK based Codex Pictures. According to the company’s website the film “is a 70 minute sci-fi thriller that will use CGI and state-of-the-art animation production techniques“.

Given the popularity of the source material, and the wealth of potential stories to draw upon, it seems bizarre that it’s taken this long for a film, even a straight to DVD one, to go into production.

It’s pretty safe to assume that, if successful, the film will spawn a series of animated sequels. What most fans will presumably be hoping, is that this will eventually lead to a live action film.

Interestingly, the company have created live-action films in the past, and despite their dodgy effects terrible acting and awful dialogue, they’re still quite charming, as the embed below shows.
