Summit Entertainment have released this new Super Bowl TV spot for their new movie, Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance which is released in the UK February 17th. It stars Nicolas Cage, Violante Placido, Ciarán Hinds, Johnny Whitworth, Christopher Lambert, Idris Elba and is directed by the chaps who brought us the Crank franchise, Brian Taylor, Mark Neveldine. We’ve got interviews with both Neveldine and Cage so keep your eyes peeled for those over the next week or 2.

Nicolas Cage returns as Johnny Blaze in Columbia Pictures’ and Hyde Park Entertainment’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. In the successor to the worldwide hit Ghost Rider, Johnny – still struggling with his curse as the devil’s bounty hunter – is hiding out in a remote part of Eastern Europe when he is recruited by a secret sect of the church to save a young boy (Fergus Riordan) from the devil (Ciaran Hinds). At first, Johnny is reluctant to embrace the power of the Ghost Rider, but it is the only way to protect the boy – and possibly rid himself of his curse forever. Here’s the Super Bowl TV spot for Universal Pictures’ new animation, The Lorax which features voices from Zac Efron, Ed Helms, Taylor Swift, Danny DeVito, Betty White, Rob Riggleand is directed by Chris Renaud. It’ll be with us 27th July.

From the creators of Despicable Me and the imagination of Dr. Seuss comes the 3D-CG feature Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, an adaptation of the classic tale of a forest creature who shares the enduring power of hope. The animated adventure follows the journey of a 12-year-old as he searches for the one thing that will enable him to win the affection of the girl of his dreams. To find it he must discover the story of the Lorax, the grumpy yet charming creature who fights to protect his world. Danny DeVito will lend his vocal talents to the iconic title character of the Lorax, while Ed Helms will voice the enigmatic Once-ler. Also bringing their talents to the film are global superstars Zac Efron as Ted, the idealistic youth who searches for the Lorax, and Taylor Swift as Audrey, the girl of Ted’s dreams. Rob Riggle will play financial king O’Hare, and beloved actress Betty White will portray Ted’s wise Grammy Norma. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax is the third feature created by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment (Despicable Me, Hop).

The Darkest Hour hits UK cinemas 13th January and to mark this occasion, Twentieth Century Fox have given us this brand new TV spot for the movie. It’s directed by Chris Gorak and stars Emile Hirsch, Olivia Thirlby, Max Minghella, Rachael Taylor and Joel Kinnaman. We’ve had quite a lot of coverage for the movie all of which you can see here. If you haven’t seen a trailer for it yet, have a little look at this as it does look visually stunning.

Synopsis: The DARKEST HOUR is the story of five young people who find themselves stranded in Moscow, fighting to survive in the wake of a devastating alien attack. The 3D thriller highlights the classic beauty of Moscow alongside mind-blowing special effects.

Entering a crowded arena Unknown is a film which forces you to compare and in doing so leaves you wanting something more.

Like other Neeson vehicles of late, it finds our hero with an insurmountable task to perform, a sort of Mission: Unknown here, but unlike previous endeavours such as Taken, a film I found to be extremely powerful, or indeed the Mission: Impossible franchise, this latest effort left me rather cold. It lacks the purpose and integrity of his previous films and places him squarely in the hard man mould, which I do not feel he meets as comfortably without an intelligent storyline or mythology to work with.

The film begins with the arrival to Berlin of Dr Martin Harris and his wife, played by the adored January Jones of Mad Men fame. We quickly find out that he is there for a conference and spoon fed the critical importance of his briefcase that is lost within the first few minutes. This is what causes Dr Harris to get into Gina’s cab (Diane Kruger) with the aim of returning to the airport where his case was left upon arrival, but he never gets there.

A road accident sees him being saved by Kruger, hospitalised and after missing for a few days, finding it nigh impossible to reenter his life. His loving wife, his colleagues and all others he has come to contact with do not recognise him and with his identity in question he finds himself in a strange city doing, what to me seemed, relatively strange and somewhat predictable things.

Jaume Collet-Serra’s direction adds some pace but is more concerned with lingering shots of what he perceives to the important things: the briefcase, the hanging bag, Prof Bressler’s (played by Sebastian Koch) daughters, January Jones’s posterior, and the story remains lacklustre which leaves us watching the plotholes go by when we should be carried quickly along past them.. Neeson plays it as though he means it, but above all it is the women that impress in this film, especially Kruger, who does not require a glitzy ball gown to shine.

If I was to be kind I would say that this film tried to do too much in attempting to incorporate famine, scientific innovation, religious and cultural contradictions, charity and the complexity of human relations as themes and it was this rather than a poor script and lack of direction that brought on my existential crisis less than half way through it. I watched it out of curiosity and would not warn you off it completely, but I doubt you will find it particularly satisfying and will probably be left feeling like watching a more authentic example of the action genre or just a different film from Neeson’s back catalogue as soon after as possible.

Optimum Releasing have been kind enough to pass these three new TV spots our way for their awesome new movie, Attack the Block. I saw it again for a second time a couple of days ago before attending the premiere (our premiere report and interviews here) with Jon and I was wondering if it’s possible to give a movie ****** (6/5)?! You can see my review from SXSW that I wrote here or check out the trailer for the movie here.

Attack the Block is directed by Joe Cornish and stars Nick Frost, Jodie Whittaker, Chris Wilson, Luke Treadaway, Joey Ansah, Lee Nicholas Harris and executive produced by Edgar Wright. It hits UK cinemas next Wednesday, 11th May.

Attack the Block is a fast, funny, frightening action adventure movie that pits a teen gang against an invasion of savage alien monsters. It turns a London housing estate into a sci-fi playground. A tower block into a fortress under siege. And teenage street kids into heroes. It’s inner city versus outer space.

Trainee nurse Sam is walking home to her flat in a scary South London tower block when she’s robbed by a gang of masked, hooded youths. She’s saved when the gang are distracted by a bright meteorite, which falls from the sky and hits a nearby parked car. Sam flees, just before the gang are attacked by a small alien creature that leaps from the wreckage. The gang chase the creature and kill it, dragging its ghoulish carcass to the top of the block, which they treat as their territory. While Sam and the police hunt for the gang, a second wave of meteors fall. Confident of victory against such feeble invaders, the gang grab weapons, mount bikes and mopeds, and set out to defend their turf. But this time, the creatures are bigger. Much bigger. Savage, shadowy and bestial, they are hunting their fallen comrade and nothing will stand in their way. The estate is about to become a battleground. And the bunch of no-hope kids who just attacked Sam are about to become her, and the block’s, only hope.

Universal Pictures recently took a number of journalists on a day out to Silchester and Reading to enlighten us on the historical background behind the Kevin Macdonald directed adaptation of the novel ‘The Eagle of the Ninth’. Much fun was had, and my sidekick Lewis from Film Club and I made this piece chronicling the day. Thanks to Lewis, Penny and Mat at Film Club for their help with the shoot and the edit.

The Eagle opens in the UK on March 23rd.

This afternoon Adam will be spending some time chatting with a man who’s profile is simply going from strength to strength (with a slight detour to All About Steve but we wont mention that… oops!), that man is Bradley Cooper. He has a brand new movie coming out where he plays the leading role in a movie which looks at the idea of a man who’s able to use the full 100% of his mind!

Limitless has a great cast which also includes Robert De Niro, Abbie Cornish & Anna Friel and is directed by Neil Burger.

Synopsis: Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro star in Limitless, a paranoia-fuelled action thriller about an unsuccessful writer whose life is transformed by a pill that allows him to use 100% of his mind and become a perfect version of himself.

His enhanced abilities soon attract shadowy forces that threaten his new life in this darkly comic and provocative film. Aspiring author Eddie Morra (Cooper) is suffering from chronic writer’s block, but his life changes instantly when an old friend introduces him to ‘Clear Pill’, a revolutionary new pharmaceutical that allows him to tap his full potential.

With every synapse crackling, Eddie can recall everything he has ever read, seen or heard, learn any language in a day, comprehend complex equations and beguile anyone he meets—as long as he keeps taking the untested pill.

Limitless is released in the UK on Wednesday, March 23rd and our review will follow in the coming weeks leading up to it’s release.

I’ve loved the marketing campaign behind 80s wannabe movie, Take Me Home Tonight. They’ve done a fantastic job at parodying what we all know and love from the 80s. Here’s the Super Bowl TV spot for Universal Pictures’ movie, The Eagle which was aired on Facebook. The Eagle is directed by Director Kevin MacDonald and stars Mark Strong, Channing Tatum, Jamie Bell, Donald Sutherland, Denis O’Hare and Tahar Rahim. It’s set for release 25th March.

Ellen Mirojnick worked as costume designer on 80s classic Wall Street, as well as last year’s sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. Her work on the film was so successful that she has been nominated in the ‘Excellence In Contemporary Film’ category in this year’s Costume Designers Guild awards.

We were recently given the opportunity to conduct an e-mail interview with Ellen, which we present to you below this featurette from the movie:

HUG: Obviously you worked on the original Wall Street, did you feel like this was a continuation of your job  there?

Ellen Mirojnick: Actually, yes. I felt that the original film opened the door to our perception of finance and  Wall Street . WallStreet Money Never Sleeps closes t­­hat chapter.

HUG: As I understand it, you used the costumes to emphasise character traits, for instance reflecting Gekko’s shark-like personality in his suit. Can you explain how this came about and provide some additional insight?

EM: As the costume designer, I interpret the essence of the story  thru the character’s imagery. This story has Gordon Gekko as an outsider. In this film, there’s a man who has nothing to do with the Street. He takes his time circling the story, sharking, until he finds a way to “feed” until he can. He Gekko’s up, and swims off to other waters.

HUG: Were there any other ways in which costume was used to tell the story?

EM: Costume is always used to tell the story. It is the film’s visual language. It is how we understand the story and the  characters that inhabit the film.

HUG: To the layman, there seems to be much less scope for costume design on a contemporary film like Wall Street than on a period piece or a sci-fi film. How do you put your stamp on a movie where, by the very nature of the characters, they ought all to be wearing Armani suits?

EM: In my opinion, a contemporary film is the most difficult to design. Most people don’t realize what actually goes into the making of it. I have always liked replicating the time and place that we live in. I love creating history. It is the contemporary film that will be the period piece in 20 years! It will be the piece that documents our history. To create a contemporary film, there are many things to take into account. Your first job is to translate the story and the characters .It is the designers decision if the character is best off wearing an Armani suit. Is there another suit that will work better for the film or actor? These types of questions are considered while translating the story with every character in every scene. If the designer’s  answer is found in a ready-to-wear garment or is illustrated and crafted in a costume workroom. The designer’s job is still the same.

HUG: Film making is a collaborative process, how much influence did Mr Stone have on the designs?

EM: Mr Stone, being the writer and director influences and  informs the design of the film. He would continually weigh in on the look and direction of the characters. Our relationship has a long history with support and a solid trust. Given that, he was able to let me freely create the characters, knowing the choices I made and were ultimately going to tell and serve the story he was creating.

HUG: And, how different was working on a film like Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps as opposed to, say GI: Joe or Starship Troopers?

EM: There are no two films that are the same. Creating each world is a process that has different components and design challenges. The differences lie in the translation of the story and the director’s vision.

The best analogy I can share is, you are travelling to 3 different parts of the world. Each country  a new foreign language. You don’t know the language, but have to communicate daily. You wouldn’t have a choice , but to learn how to communicate by learning the language.

One of the most anticipated sequels to come our way this year is Oliver Stone’s walk down memory lane – Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps.

A revisiting rather than a reboot or a remake, Stone’s film has garnered positive reviews when it played the festival circuit. We saw the film at Cannes and you can see our review here.

Our good friends from Upbeat attended the World Premiere of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps in New York earlier this week.

They got to chat with stars, Michael Douglas, Shia LaBeouf, Josh Brolin, Susan Sarandon, Carey Mulligan and director Oliver Stone.

The film opens in America today and we get the film over here on the 6th of October. Can’t wait.

The 2010 movie award for ‘The One We’ve All Been Waiting Far too Long to See’ has to go to Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps! It was originally due for release in April this year and then got shifted back 5 months and is coming to UK cinemas 6th October which really isn’t that far away! YAY!

Unsubtle allusions to the origins of David Fincher’s new movie aside, there are four new TV spots advertising the holy heck out of The Social Network – the movie currently blistering its way to the top of many critic’s Best of the Year lists.

We’re excited about seeing the Sorkin/Fincher Facebook film, and we’ve got a few more weeks until it hits the cinema so let’s console ourselves with these, yes?

Bloody Disgusting have released the first TV spot which you can see below. It’s released in the UK 20th August.

There’s only a week to go until we get our look at the latest 80s franchise update to tear through the nostalgia barrier and arrive with the Nimrod Antal directed/Robert Rodriguez produced Predators, and in amongst the sheer tonnage of marketing there are still new sights to see.

There’s two new clips around today which have Adrien Brody, Alice Braga and friends working out where (and why) they are. In the first clip, the team have an interesting encounter with someone who is not what he seems, check that out below…
