We didn’t post an article on it but a couple of weeks ago, there was a big hoo-hah from various leprosy groups including Lepra Health In Action and the International Federation of Anti-Leprosy Associations (ILEP) who complained about a specific scene in Sony / Aardman’s new movie, The Pirates: In an Adventure with Scientists or The Pirates! Band of Misfits (depending on which side of the Atlantic you’re from). The scene in question is where The Pirates Captain (voiced by Hugh Grant) jumps on board a ship which turns out to be from a leper colony. It’s is about 10 seconds long and you’ll see pretty much all of it in all of the trailers that we’ve put up so far. I’m not really sure what I think about the scene being cut but in this world of being uber PC, I guess Sony / Aardman had to make the description to cut it. This is what they said on the matter courtesy of Deadline:

“After reviewing the matter, we decided to change the scene out of respect and sensitivity for those who suffer from leprosy. The last thing anyone intended was to offend anyone and it is clear to us that the right way to proceed is to honor the efforts made by organizations like ILEP to educate the public about this disease.”

Anyway, this evening, Sony have put up a brand new trailer, 4 seconds shorter than it’s predecessor minus the now infamous scene. I’ve placed both the original version of the trailer which we placed back in November (that’s the Yahoo embed) and then the new version which Sony have just released this evening.

The Pirates: In an Adventure with Scientists is quite possibly the movie I’m looking forward to seeing most this year. I know that’s a controversial thing to say what with the first part of The Hobbit, The Dark Knight Rises, The Avengers and Spider-Man coming out but I simply cannot wait to see the complete version of the masterpiece that Aardman have created. I mean just look at my set report! AMAZING!

Yes, you read the title correctly! Here’s the first trailer for Tomcat Film’s new movie, Jurassic Shark which, from the trailer looks like it draws from movies including Free Willy, Deep Blue Sea, Jaws and obviously Jurassic Park and looks like a must see!

Sony linked up cinemas around the world last night to give eager Spider-Fans the chance to see a sizzle reel and the premiere of a new trailer for Marc Webb’s film.

Twitter fell into a predictable lovefest for the reboot, which has the (500) Days of Summer director take on one of the most beloved characters in the comicverse with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone bringing Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy to life on screen and, as is very much the custom these days, in three sparkling dimensions.

Dave and Adam were in attendance last night and you can read Adam’s take on what was shown here, suffice to say that when the 4th of July rolls around there’ll be plenty of webheads desperate to see if Sony’s sudden reboot tactic has paid off. Given the talent involved, and the hyperbole spun last night, it seems The Amazing Spider-Man may well live up to its name.

The Alien games have had somewhat of an iffy legacy.

So we’re trying not to get too excited about Aliens: Colinial Marines.

But then SEGA go and release trailers like this.

‘My friends,’ writes director Timo Vuorensola, ‘I have great news!’

And he’s not joking. The poster for Nazis from the dark side of the Moon sci-fi comedy Iron Sky has just been released on his blog and it’s as subtle as a sackful of spanners. Which is exactly what we’ve come to expect however there’s the telltale visual punch which seems to run through the entire project.

Only a week ago the news came from Vuorensola that the film was finished and set to have its long awaited premiere at the Berlin Film Festival this year and this was accompanied with a suitably epic final trailer, which if you’ve not seen you really should remedy that now.

Not only do we have a glorious poster to enjoy but a ‘making-of’ gallery of the poster has also been uploaded showing the transition from pencil sketches to sexy Nazi/zepplin-a-rama. Check that out here, and the poster is below.

This one keeps getting better and better.

If you’ve been waiting for a Space Nazi sci-fi comedy then you’re in luck as Timo Vuorensola’s long-awaited Iron Sky is finally finished and has been added to list of film playing at this year’s Berlin Film Festival.

This is great news for the fanbase, sizable for a film which hasn’t been released, and the trailers released over the last few years promised a truly spectacular and visually stunning film. It looks nuts too.

We’re going to put our hands up right now and admit that we’ve been Final Fantasy fans since VII’s paradigm-shifting RPG on the Playstation.

Since then, things have come a long, long way, but despite the graphical overhaul and real time action-orientated battle shift, it still has the thing we know and love best – story.

That rarity of Final Fantasy sequels, Final Fantasy XIII-2 is unsurprisingly a continuation of the tale begun in 2009′s Final Fantasy XIII. Yet with protagonist Lightning mysteriously missing, it’s left to her younger sister Serah and new guy Noel Kreiss to step up to the plate and find her.

Following on from yesterday’s ridiculous Sony ad masquerading as a teaser trailer for Resident Evil: Retribution we have the first look trailer for Capcom’s sixth installment of the main thread of Resident Evil games (and something like the sixteenth game in total from the series) and it follows on directly from the events of Resident Evil 4.

Nice to know that Capcom, like us, are trying to forget that Resident Evil 5 never happened.

The game isn’t out until November so there’s plenty of time to get all excited about the undead carnage coming your way and if you care about why there’s the need for so much killing and stuff  this is the game’s synopsis,

It has been ten years since the Raccoon City incident and the President of the United States has decided to reveal the truth behind what took place in the belief that it will curb the current resurgence in bioterrorist activity. Due to be by the President’s side is his personal friend and Raccoon City survivor, Leon S. A new UK trailer has been released for Jean-Jacques Annaud’s latest film Black Gold which lands on UK shores on the 24th of February.

Tahar Rahim, star of A Prophet, leads the cast which includes Mark Strong, Frieda Pinto, Antonio Banderas and Riz Ahmed, it received its world premiere at the Doha Tribeca Film Festival last October where we reviewed it.

Here’s a synopsis for you,

Under the unforgiving desert sky, two warring leaders come face to face. The bodies of their warriors litter the battlefield. The victorious Nesib, Emir of Hobeika (ANTONIO BANDERAS), lays down his peace terms to his rival Amar, Sultan of Salmaah (MARK STRONG). The two men agree that neither may lay claim to the area of no man’s land between them called The Yellow Belt. In return and according to the tribal customs of the time, Nesib will “adopt”- or take hostage- Amar’s two boys Saleeh (AKIN GAZI) and Auda (TAHAR RAHIM); a guarantee that neither man can invade the other. Years later, Saleeh and Auda have grown into young men. Saleeh, the warrior, itches to escape his gilded cage and return to his father’s land. Auda cares only for books and the pursuit of knowledge. One day, their adopted father Nesib is visited by an American oil man from Texas (COREY JOHNSON). He tells the Emir that his land is blessed with oil and promises him riches beyond his imagination.

Never did I think I’d see the day when Robin Williams, Megan Fox, William Fichtner, Josh Duhamel, Robin Williams, Billy Crystal and British ex-footballer come movie star Vinnie Jones, all appear in the same movie together…. Well, I guess they still haven’t really but they do all appear in this new trailer for The 84th Academy Awards or the Oscars as they are more commonly known.

We’ll be staying up all night as we usually do to blog the event as it happens and we’d love you to join us. It’s set to take place on Sunday February 26th at 7pm EST 4PM PST and that I think means coverage will being from midnight GMT but that will probably be red carpet arrivals and all the build up with the actual ceremony starting after that.

Anyway, here’s the trailer named ‘Off the grid’ that will blow your mind as much as it did mine!

Quentin Dupieux is back! No, I’m not sure who he is either but nevertheless I’m intrigued. His previous effort called Rubber – a film reported as being an exercise in ‘intellectual w**kery’ and B-movie tackyness – was well received and concerning as it did a murderous car tyre with homicidal intent how could it not be?

His follow up is Wrong, a film that so far has confounded all attempts by anyone to decipher precisely what’s going on. The Gibson-insane trailer released in November served to confuse everyone further but even so the film is already generating quite a cult following. Get ready to have your mind diddled:

The film stars William Fichtner, Alexis Dziena and Steve Little and centres around a man who is looking for his lost dog and along the way comes across a nympho pizza-delivery girl, a jogging neighbor seeking the absolute, and a mysterious righter of wrongs.

Who the hell knows how this is going to turn out? It has bonkers pedigree, a crazy vague trailer and added to this it now has an even vaguer teaser scene, presumably released to ready it’s audiences bewildered faces for the films premiere at Sundance in a few weeks:

So who’s Mr Chang? Why is he running late? Why did she take so long to do her stretches?  Why does all of the promotional material for this film end so abruptly? What is the director on?

Well you can rest assured that all of these questions and more won’t be satisfactorily answered come the film’s (currently unspecified) release date.

And even then it looks like one question will trump them all. Why?

It’s been a fair old week for trailers with Gotham city, Hobbiton and even LV-426 playing host to some of the most anticipated teases of 2012.

One of these recent offerings has inspired the team at Dumb Drum to cook up a fine swede, paying cheeky homage to the dour toned trailer for The Dark Knight Rises.

There are some who call Christopher Nolan’s films po-faced and his stab at the Gotham Superhero certainly isn’t a laugh-a-minute chortle fest, so if you need a bit of titter as the Dark Knight Rises then I suggest checking out this shot for shot parody of the recent trailer, complete with football field sinkhole incident and the contorted mumblings of Banespeak.

After many years of rumours, financial hardship and a long quest to find a director we are once again walking in Middle Earth with Peter Jackson.

The first trailer for The Hobbit has arrived and the long wait has been worth it, Several familiar faces return to Hobbiton and beyond with Cate Blanchett, Elijah Wood​, Hugo Weaving,  Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee​, Andy Serkis​ and Ian Holm being joined by newcomers Richard Armitage, James Nesbitt, Evangeline Lilly, Luke Evans and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Here’s a handy synopsis,

Warner Bros. have just announced on via their Twitter account that The Hobbit Trailer for An Unexpected Journey will sit in front of Tintin when it hits the US on the 21st December which is all well and good but the question I have is when will we be seeing it in the UK? Most likely, it’ll hit the interwebs before that date but selfishly (and just like everyone else!), I want to see it! We’ll keep you informed if we get any further info but for now, we know it’s coming and I cannot wait to see it!!! (did I say that already?!)

The Hobbit An Unexpected Journey will be with us in the UK 13th December 2012 which, I’m pleased to report is a week before the US! YAY!

The latest stop on the route to the Final Destination is here and if you get your kicks from pretty people featuring in over the top death scenes and playing a thankless game of Hide and Seek with Death himself then you’ll be in for a treat with the fifth in the series.

My review of the film (out on DVD and Blu-ray on Boxing Day) is right here and it’s safe to say that if you’re a fan of the series then you’ll love what’s on offer here.

The clip we have for you today is taken from the Special Features on the disc and concerns a plot twist which does cast the previous four films in a new light, suffice to say that //Spoiler Warning// if you’ve not seen the film please don’t watch this//Spoiler Warning Over//

Proving the mendacious nature of the previous film’s title (or does it?) we gather around the latest ode to over the top death and dismemberment with Final Destination 5 to enjoy the silliest and goriest installment yet. There’s nothing here to shock and surprise, so closely does it follows its forebears, with the usual pretty young things escaping the clutches of death by scarpering from a phenomenally unlikely fatal accident, delivered with glee from the filmmakers to the delight(?) of the audience, who know exactly what’s going to happen.

I have no problem with a film following a formula, and this particular Final Destination does at least try to throw something new into the mix, and if the film is well made with a hint of wit then I’ll play along, however Final Destination 5 falls into the trap of most of the sequels to the original by making this all about death scene after death scene; playing with the audience’s’ expectations is far enough, and par for the course, but every situation becomes about waiting for the gruesome to occur. We don’t care about the story or the characters, it may as well be a nasty YouTube playlist of cinema’s most outrageous death scenes.

The opening scene is impressive and well handled by Steven Quale and he brings a certain solidity to some of the later scenes but there’s nothing that anyone can inject into the film to make it worthwhile. The actors are playing caricatures bound for an early grave in as many pieces as possible, the writers have worked out how to concoct the most dangerous situations and draw out the gory anticipation to breaking point and so it plays on and on.

Bottom line is if you enjoy watching people die in outlandish ways then you’ll love this, and now that we’ve five films in there’s very little to differentiate this from the last four films, and plastering every death from the series in quick succession over the credits is a sure-fire way to underlining the fact that everything between the fatalities is pointless.

Extras

The accompanying documentary is the usual celebration of the splatterfest with an array of talking heads enjoying the even more outrageous deaths they put together for the film, and when they come to the twist, which effectively re-writes the whole series, there’s a lot of back-slapping and talk of how this was integral to the whole film. In truth it’s far less about the twist than they make out though it’s worth a watch to see the production team talk about the effects, the scene on the bridge for example, and this is the subject of the special feature that I did enjoy.

There is a breakdown of the film’s opening scene on the bridge which involves no voiceover, no explanation, no complicated discussion of the problems and pitfalls of shooting such a scene. Instead we have the entire scene cut together without any finished effects and green screens everywhere and in a small picture in a corner the completed scene plays along in synchronicity. This is a great way to watch the scene and take in the massive scale of the work which goes into the process. Not deal breaker stuff, but good to have if you’re a fan.

Goon hits UK cinemas 6th January and we’re all rather looking forward to it. Adam saw the movie a week or two ago and really enjoy it so keep your eyes peeled for our review. In the meantime, Entertainment One have sent us the new UK trailer for the movie which comes from the same people who made Pineapple Express and Superbad. This time no Seth Rogan though folks but there is Seann William Scott taking the lead as the ‘Goon’!

Goon is directed by Michael Dowse and also stars Jay Baruchel, Liev Schreiber, Alison Pill, Kim Coates, Eugene Levy and Marc-André Grondin.

Nicolas Cage is joined by Idris Elba and Ciaran Hinds in the sequel and if you’re in any doubt as to the tone of this one then it’s best you acquaint yourselves with the new trailer which is out today.

Here’s a synopsis,

 Nicolas Cage returns as Johnny Blaze in Columbia Pictures’ and Hyde Park Entertainment’s Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance. In the successor to the worldwide hit Ghost Rider, Johnny – still struggling with his curse as the devil’s bounty hunter – is hiding out in a remote part of Eastern Europe when he is recruited by a secret sect of the church to save a young boy (Fergus Riordan) from the devil (Ciaran Hinds). At first, Johnny is reluctant to embrace the power of the Ghost Rider, but it is the only way to protect the boy – and possibly rid himself of his curse forever.

I had the good fortune to speak with Mark Neveldine yesterday about the production and it sounds like they are making good on their promise to make this a darker take on the character. You can read my interview early in the New Year, in the meantime enjoy the trailer.

New Year’s Eve is released in UK cinemas right now and unfortunately hasn’t done too well in the review stakes (ours here) mainly due to the fact it has so many characters in that there is no time for those characters to develop. Funny or Die have come to the rescue though creating this brilliant new parody trailer for ‘Christmas Day’ which does it’s best to mock Garry Marshall’s new movie.

Universal Home Entertainment have sent us the first trailer for their new release, Boca which won the Best Cinematography and Best Editing awards at the Festival do Rio 2010. It stars Daniel de Oliveira, Hermila Guedes, Jefferson Brasil and is Directed by Flavio Frederico and is released in the UK on DVD and Blu-ray February 13th. The film is set in Sao Paulo in the 50’s and 60’s and based on the autobiography of Hiroito Joanides de Moraes. The trailer looks fabulous so scroll down to check it out or click here to pre-order your copy.

Adapted from his autobiography, the film recounts the story of Hiroito, The King of Boca do Lixo (a region in downtown São Paulo of the fifties where nightclubs, strip joints, prostitution, bars, and drugs could be found). Hiroito was a well born bohemian and at the age of 21 was accused of the murder of his father, who was violently stabbed over 40 times with a razor. Hiroito was not charged, however, two months after the death of his father, Hiroito bought two guns and moved to Boca do Lixo and became one of the most dangerous criminals of the region.
