Cannes 2013: Takashi Miike’s Wara No Tate Review

Wara No Tate

Takashi Miike returns to Cannes with perhaps his most conventional film yet, an overblown but highly entertaining thriller about five cops transporting a despicable child murderer across Japan. Tatsuya Fujiwara, who is perhaps best know in the West for his portrayal of the naive and sweet Nanahara in Kinji Fukasaku’s Battle Royale, plays Kiyomaru, the [...]

LFF 2012: For Love’s Sake (Ai To Makoto) Review

For Love's Sake Takashi Miike

Seemingly back making films at a breakneck pace Takashi Miike makes it clear with For Love’s Sake (Ai To Makoto) that 13 Assassins and Harakiri, his recent period samurai remakes, were examples of him branching out further, rather than a full-blown new direction. That’s not to say that Miike is fully back to approaching the [...]

Lady Snowblood Box Set Blu-ray Review

Lady Snowblood

The 1973 blood-soaked cult classic Lady Snowblood arrives on Blu-ray, looking every bit as gleefully demented and violent as the generation of films which have been inspired by it. Quentin Tarantino has always been open in citing the film as a huge influence on the first Kill Bill, but witnessing the copious amount of limb [...]

Takashi Miike Lines Up Graphic Novel Adap “Lesson Of The Evil”

Takashi Miike

To describe Japanese director Takashi Miike as prolific is to fail to tell the half of it. His IMDb listing shows 87 directorial credits in the past 20-odd years, which is frankly astonishing. I must confess to having seen very little of his output beyond the more celebrated (and visceral) Audition and Ichi The Killer, [...]

Six Of The Best – Little-Seen Gems

Audition v2

This sort of thing can rapidly turn into a vanity project, so I will have to watch my step a little. Laudable as it is to try to bring to people’s attention some splendid films which they may not have seen, it can swiftly deteriorate into, “oh gosh, you haven’t seen Cube: Zero, what kind [...]

Margaret

There were many delights to be found in UK cinemas in 2011 both in wide release and at the wide variety of festivals that still thrive here. I watched a great many films in 2011 and there were a large number that impressed me and below are some of my favourites. I have divided the [...]

LFF 2011: Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (Ichimei) Review

Hara-Kiri Poster

Anyone who has already seen Masaki Kobayashi’s 1962 film Harakiri, of which this film is very much a remake, will very quickly realise when watching Miike’s 2011 update that little in the story has been changed but whilst the mechanics of the story are unchanged Miike makes significant changes in the way this story is told. Hara-Kiri: Death of [...]

phoenix wright

Video game adaptations have mostly been criticized by a large majority of cinema-goers for a lack of care from the studios, filmmakers and the original source itself. With next year seeing the release of Silent Hill: Revelation 3D, another new film to join this slate of adaptations and it is based the critically successful Phoenix [...]

Deadly Outlaw: Rekka UK DVD Review

Deadly Outlaw DVD

Beginning with the shrieking, pounding sound of The Flower Travellin’ Band’s Satori Pt. I and a montage that is probably only bested by Miike’s other incredible montage opening in Dead or Alive, Deadly Outlaw: Rekka announces its intent swiftly and ruthlessly. The opening also gives us our first glimpse at the film’s lead character Kunisada [...]

Edo period Japan and the untouchable brother of the Shogun, the villainous Lord Naritsugu (played wonderfully by SMAP member Goro Inagaki), is out of control and a group of samurai (and a wandering bandit) set out to assassinate Naritsugu before he rises too high and things get far worse. Takashi Miike Planning a 3D Remake of Harakiri

Harakiri Poster

Mark Schilling at Variety is reporting the news that following Zebraman 2 (the trailer of which can be found here) and 13 Assassins (a remake of Eiichi Kudo’s 1963 film of the same name) Takashi Miike’s is working on another remake, this time of Masaki Kobayashi’s 1962 film, Harakiri (AKA Seppuku). Kobayashi’s film tells the [...]
