In recent years we have seen Hollywood tap a variety of different resources in its ongoing search for new ideas. Stopping just short of sticking its hand down the side of the sofa and rummaging for loose inspiration, Tinseltown has instead chosen to adapt everything from the usual books, video games and television shows, to comic books, websites, theme park rides and – I still can’t quite believe it –  even board games. So, why not an entire year?

If 2011 were a movie, aside from reflecting such recent events as The Royal Wedding, the London riots, the Eurozone crisis and those pandas arriving at Edinburgh zoo, it would also have to reflect the trends and tendencies prevalent in the films it has seen released during its tenure. As such, it would most likely be a remake of a foreign language prequel, a motion-capture throwback and a steamy tale of friends with benefits, with no strings attached.

If 2011 were a movie it would star Michael Fassbender as a man haunted by an unsuppressable Irish accent, Ryan Gosling as someone who can wear clothes really well, and Natalie Portman in the midst of what must amount to the most productive pregnancy ever. Stellan Skarsgård would play a man with a hidden agenda, Felicity Jones’ character would ultimately win your heart and Justin Timberlake would appear as a surprisingly capable actor.

If 2011 were a movie it would be set in Rio de Janeiro, where birds come to mate, the fast are as fun as they are furious, and vampires routinely honeymoon.  At least, that is, until Michael Bay crashes a Transformer into it, forcing our heroes to set sale, on stranger tides, in search of the secrets of a unicorn. On a Zeppelin. It would see McLovin slay some vampires, James Bond team up with Indiana Jones, and Queen Amidala wooed by a bunch of carrots and a period mix.

If 2011 were a movie it would be called 2011: The Movie – Part II Of The Rise Of The Planet of The Apes Of The Moon 3D. It would have more punctuation than characters, more dimensions than punctuation, and in all likelihood be prefixed with Green. It would be a kid’s film by Martin Scorsese, a superhero movie by Michael Gondry, a live action movie by Brad Bird and an animated movie by Steven Spielberg.

If 2011 were a movie it wouldn’t be as good as the book, the original or the trailer for Sucker Punch made it out to be. It would miscast Liam Neeson, boast too much Nicolas Cage, and at some point feature a fat character shaving his head and shitting into her dress. Worst of all, however, New Year’s Eve would kill the finale. And it would be inexplicably steampunk.

More importantly, however, if 2011 were a movie I would pay to see it. I would marvel at its melancholy, gasp at its production values and laugh unabashedly at its failure to kill Bono. It would be surprisingly heartfelt for a summer blockbuster, unexpectedly jaw-dropping for a low budget Norwegian flick, as funny as the TV show, and a fitting conclusion to a much loved franchise.

If 2011 were a movie, 2012 would have a lot to live up to.

The first of our superhero films from Marvel this year, Thor was an impressive box office and critical success when it came out in April this year, taking just shy of $450m. from its $150m. budget.

Pretty much ever since it found such success in cinemas, there’s been talk of a sequel, and it officially came out in the summer that the original’s director, Kenneth Branagh, was opting out of returning for the sequel, in what seemed to be a completely friendly parting.

Since then, there was first talk of Brian Kirk, best known for his work on Boardwalk Empire and Game of Thrones, coming on board the project, but then in October, Patty Jenkins officially signed on for the director’s job instead.

Earlier this month, though, word came that Jenkins and Marvel had parted ways based on creative differences, and the search has been back on since then to fill the empty chair. It looks like Marvel have now done just that, with Deadline reporting that Emmy-winning Alan Taylor will be the director for the superhero sequel.

Taylor’s name may not be a household name, but from what I’ve seen of his work, he’s a brilliant director, and after the awesome first film in which Branagh was unexpectedly cast, I can’t wait to see whatTaylorbrings to the table for the second film.

The director is largely best known for his TV credits, which include episodes on The West Wing, The Sopranos, Mad Men, Boardwalk Empire, and Game of Thrones. So essentially, though you may not know his name well, you can trust that he’s an experienced director who knows exactly what he’s doing.

Thor was of course led by Chris Hemsworth, which did a great job of boosting the actor’s rising star, with support coming from the brilliant Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan Skarsgård, Kat Dennings, Idris Elba, and of course, Clark Cregg reprising his role as Agent Coulson.

Marvel president Kevin Feige gave a few details of what we can expect from the sequel back in September:

“[Thor 2 will] primarily be the journey of that character, of he and Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) and how the new dynamic with his father is working out, as well as what are the broader stakes for the Nine Worlds.”

We can look forward to seeing a lot more of Hemsworth next year, kicking off first with the Joss Whedon-scripted The Cabin in the Woods in April, followed two weeks later by the Whedon-directed and highly anticipated The Avengers (in which he will of course reprise his role as Thor), followed by Snow White and the Huntsman opposite Kristen Stewart in June, and then the Red Dawn remake towards the end of the year.

With all of them having been completed or in post-production, Hemsworth is set to next turn his attentions to Ron Howard’s Rush, which sounds like it’s going to be amazing. WithTaylornow on board, Thor 2 should be moving forward nicely with Hemsworth back in the lead, and should still be able to meet its target of a November, 2013 release date. More news as we get it.

No sign of a Dark Knight Rising, but who needs it when there’s a little bit more of The Avengers ala Joss Whedon in the offing today as a new German trailer is released.

It is similar to the trailer we’ve seen already but there is a little new footage in there which makes this a must-see for Whedonites and Marvel fans alike.

The cast of the new movie includes Samuel L. Jackson, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Jenny Agutter, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany and Robert Downey J which, when you think about it, is a pretty fine cast.

Yes they very similar to the US ones that we saw a month or two ago but this time we have lost the big A on the posts so we can see the characters in all their glory! Having worked with the brilliant (and somewhat controversial) writer-director Lars von Trier on his last two films, Melancholia and Antichrist, Charlotte Gainsbourg is now in talks to join him for his next outing, The Nymphomaniac, Variety report.

The film is still at the script stage, with von Trier penning the script himself, and is to be divided into eight chapters. Specific plot details are still being kept under wraps, but it is known that it will be an explicit exploration of a woman’s erotic life, and so there are two versions that are planned to be released – a softcore cut for mainstrea release, alongside a hardcore one.

Two of von Trier’s other past collaborators, Stellan Skarsgård (Melancholia) and Willem Dafoe (Antichrist), are also thought to have been approached by the director, and given the nature of the brief plot description we have so far, we could be in for another controversial von Trier film.

Gainsbourg won the Best Actress award at Cannes for Antichrist two years ago, and was absolutely brilliant opposite Kirsten Dunst – who won the same award for Melancholia this year – in von Trier’s Melancholia. If you missed it in its brief run in UK cinemas this September, I highly recommend picking it up when it hits the shelves on DVD/Blu-Ray on 23^rd January.

Von Trier and Gainsbourg have clearly got a great track record with the director’s last two films, so news that she’ll be returning to work for him for The Nymphomaniac sounds excellent to me. Artificial Eye have already pre-bought the rights to distribute the film in the UK, which is also brilliant news, so though the film’s still in the scripting stage, we shouldn’t have any concerns about it not reaching our shores whenever its release comes. More on this as we get it.

I’m not entirely sure why but Sony have released an eight minute long trailer for their new movie, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. The trailer gives bucket loads away so if you don’t want to be spoilt then don’t watch on.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is a remake of the Swedish film released in 2010 but is based on the book by Stieg Larsson. It stars Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, Christopher Plummer, Joely Richardson, Steven Berkoff, David Dencik and is directed by David Fincher.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the first film in Columbia Pictures’ three-picture adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s literary blockbuster The Millennium Trilogy. Directed by David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara, the film is based on the first novel in the trilogy, which altogether have sold 50 million copies in 46 countries and become a worldwide phenomenon. The screenplay is by Steven Zaillian.

The movie is set for release 12th December. Evil shall with evil be expelled!

The more I see of David Fincher’s take on Steig Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo the more I like it.

Dark, dour and with a mean streak a mile wide there’s a new TV spot out in the wild today which will shake the last vestige of apathy from you. Rooney Mara and Daniel Craig lead the US adadptation of one of the most popular books of the last few years and there’s a definite sense of momentum behind this one.

Starring alongside our two leads are Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgård, Christopher Plummer​, Geraldine James, Joely Richardson, Joel Kinnaman, Yorick van Wageningen, Goran Visnjic, Alexandra Daddario, and the film is scheduled to be released in the UK on December 26.

Synopsis: One fateful day several years ago, Harriet Vanger (Daddario) disappeared off the secluded island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger family. There was no corpse, no witnesses and no evidence. Nearly forty years later, investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig) reluctantly accepts the unusual and seemingly unsolvable assignment of finding out what really happened to Harriet. Genius hacker, Lisbeth Salander​ (Mara) is drawn into the case and the two form a fragile alliance as they dig into the sinister past of the Vangers and find out just how far they’re prepared to go to protect themselves and each other.

Sony Pictures have released a brand new Neil Kellerhouse-designed poster for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which carries the new tagline “What is hidden in the snow comes forth in the thaw”.

Earlier today, we had a trailer for the trailer but now, the full version is here in all it’s glory! Without further ado, he’s the trailer for the movie for your viewing pleasure!

Say what you like about the necessity of an English language remake of one of the most successful Swedish films in recent years the prospect of a new David Fincher film is enticing indeed and having Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara leading his version of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo means this one is going to be hard to ignore.

We’ve got some new pictures from the production thanks to Le Monde (via ComingSoon) and it’s still a shock to see Rooney Mara looking quite so stark but grabbing the role of Lisbeth Salander is clearly too good an opportunity to pass up.

Given the original trilogy’s success in both its print form and the film adaptation there’s an excellent chance that Craig and Mara will have signed up for the three films with the only question remaining about Fincher’s long term committment to the project.

The trailers we’ve seen have been excellent, though The Muppets’ parody of it was a little bit better, and it’s a Boxing Day present for us when the film comes out in late December here in the UK.

Much like Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life earlier this year, Lars von Trier’s Melancholia is a bit of a divisive film. There’ll be plenty of people (myself included) who absolutely love it, but I’ve no doubt that many people won’t really take to it.

I highly recommend that you go and search it out for yourselves if it’s playing in a cinema near you, because even those who don’t love it will likely agree that it’s incredibly well shot, well written, and immensely well acted.

We here in the UK have had the joy of Melancholia in our cinemas since 30th September (and sadly it seems, at least in cinemas near me, to already be disappearing from being shown on the big screen), but the States don’t get it in their cinemas for just over a month, and so we’ve still got the last of their advertising campaign to enjoy over here.

Courtesy of IMP Awards comes a beautiful new poster for the film, showing its lead, Kirsten Dunst, feeling the end of the world as it draws near. And Yahoo Movies have debuted another great new poster for the film in motion form, with Dunst and her co-star Alexander Skarsgård on the cusp of sharing a melancholic kiss.

Though it may be a minor detail, the way Dunst keeps her eyes open in the motion poster whilst Skarsgård looks to have his closed is perfect. And the tranquility of the first poster, in spite of the pending doom, is just utterly beautiful.

I saw this film last week and fell in love with it from the moment it began to the moment it finished, and I am already looking forward to my next viewing. Along with Dunst and Skarsgård, the film also stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kierfer Sutherland, John Hurt, Charlotte Rampling, and Stellan Skarsgård, from a script written by von Trier.

Melancholia very much deservedly won Dunst the Best Actress award at Cannes earlier in the year, and I’m interested to see whether it will do the same at the Academy Awards early next year. Without further ado, here are the great new posters to enjoy. As usual with the former, click to enlarge.

Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Marvel’s Thor was released on DVD and Blu-ray last week and it’s a surprisingly fun film which did very well at the box office despite the God O’Thunder not being a hugely well known character.

The DVD has a ton of these little featurettes which, when combined, form a decent behind the scenes documentary and I thought it would be a nice diversion this fine morning to take a wander through Asgard to see how it was all done.

Initially considered an unusual choice, Branagh looks like he’s had the time of his life with his cast and there’s a little time spent with the designers of the film.

To coincide nicely with Jamie’s great review of Lars von Trier’s new movie, Melancholia, we have the UK premiere footage and interviews which took place on Wednesday evening at the Curzon in London. Two of the stars of the film were present in the form of John Hurt and Kirsten Dunst who both spoke very highly of working with the infamous Director, Lars von Trier.

Melancholia also stars Charlotte Gainsbourg, Alexander Skarsgård, Brady Corbet, Cameron Spurr, Charlotte Rampling, Jesper Christensen, Stellan Skarsgård , Udo Kier, Kiefer Sutherland and is in UK cinemas tomorrow, 30th September.

David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is one of the most highly anticipated films of the year, based on the incredibly popular first in the trilogy of novels by the late Stieg Larsson.

Because of the novels’ popularity, and the fact that there’s already been a Swedish adaptation of them, the film is one likely to be somewhat divisive among audiences, but I personally can’t wait to see it.

We got a first look at a trailer for the film back in June this year, and it was pretty fantastic. And now, courtesy of MSN we’ve got a brilliant extended trailer to share with you. Clocking in at 3:45 in length, it gives us a much longer and more detailed look at the film and what we can expect from it. And it’s definitely promising stuff.

I must confess that I’m still yet to read the novels or see the original film trilogy, but I’m a big fan of all of Fincher’s work, and I cannot wait to see what he brings us following the success of The Social Network. Daniel Craig, Rooney Mara, and Stellan Skarsgård all look fantastic in this, and Oscar-winning Steven Zaillian looks to have penned a brilliant script. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo is released here on 26th December this year, a date that can’t come soon enough. Without further ado, here’s the brand new trailer. Quite how David Fincher plucked and gothed Rooney Mara into the terrifying Lisbeth Salander is anybody’s guess, but the actress is has stepped into one hell of a role with Noomi Rapace already catapulted to crazy fame with her portrayal of the character in the Swedish adaptations of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy.

Putting a director of Fincher’s stature in charge of a seemingly needless adaptation went a long way to convincing people that this was a good idea and the kick arse trailer we saw recently only compounded this.

The cast is full of accomplished actors and there’s no doubting that the novels could well be described in blurbs everywhere as ‘a sensation’ so it seem entirely appropriate that a cast and crew of this calibre is bringing them to a big screen, and in English, near you.

These three new pics give us a first look at Yorick van Wageningen as Nils Bjurman, Salander’s new guardian, and one whose relationship with the titular tattooed girl is all manner of nasty. I’m still working through the first book and have reached a very uncomfortable moment between the two. Daniel Craig and Christopher Plummer are glimpsed below also.

Boxing Day is the UK release date and a better present I cannot imagine.

Let’s all give Empire a big pat on the back, why don’t we?

The official website of David Fincher’s adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has been updated and there’s a whole host of new pictures and character profiles to give you an idea of the faces and names you’ll be getting involved with over the next few years.

I’m just starting out in the first of Stieg Larsson’s acclaimed trilogy and it’s the very definition of a page-turner with a tragic event and the subsequent mystery surrounding it being the spark to unfurling a twisted family history. The original Swedish films have done so well, and proved to be star Noomi Rapace’s ticket to Hollywood, that many questioned the necessity of an English Language remake, but with this cast and Fincher behind the camera it’s shaping up to be something very special indeed.

Based on a true story, King of Devil’s Island dramatises the 1915 uprising at a correctional facility on Bastøy Island, Norway. Set in the Oslo fjord, the film charts the arrival of alleged murderer Erling (Benjamin Helstad) at Bastøy Boys Home: an unforgiving residence for Norway’s maladjusted youth which prefers numbers to names and forbids talk of the past.

Inducted with fellow offender Ivar (Magnus Langlete), Erling wastes no time in provoking the harsh school governor (Stellan Skarsgard) and coming into conflict with housemaster’s pet and dorm leader Olav (Trond Nilssen). When a teacher is caught sexually assaulting a pupil, however, order gives into chaos as the youths revolt.

Given the scale of the uprising and the infamy of the aftermath from which the film takes its name, it is truly surprising how unhurried director Marius Holst is to realise it onscreen. Instead, Holst conjects a series of stock characters and Bildungsroman clichés to pad out the interim and get full use of his doomed sets (gorgeous as they are) and landmark story. Epic in every sense of the word – from the stunning snowscapes to accomplished CGI – if there is one criticism of King of Devil’s Island it is that it fills its narrative with needless and inorganic deviations from the otherwise engaging core premise, dramatically diluting the story.

Another criticism – while we’re here – is the film’s choice of leading man. While the decision to cast newcomers and unknowns (even for Norway) in the role of the student body largely pays off, Helstad’s onscreen presence – reminiscent of a Norweigen Channing Tatum – unfortunately undercuts most of the drama with jarring effect. It’s a pity, especially when Erling is placed opposite the inspiring Olav, the imposing governor or Kristoffer Joner hateful pervert.

Cinematographer John Andreas Andersen makes the most of the Estonian landscape, standing in for Norway throughout the shoot, putting every penny (or ducat) of the not inconsiderable budget onscreen. The stark brutality of the governor’s rule is reflected in the barren landscape, the skeletal trees and white backdrop insulating the community from the rest of humanity – and indeed from humanity itself. Andersen’s otherwise understated mise-en-scène doesn’t truly flourish until the final reel, however, with the blazing buildings and dark-coated escape attempts framed to perfection.

Uneven to begin with but finally finding its feet in time for the stunning finale, King of Devil’s Island is an absolutely outstanding piece of cinema. Though not always entirely engrossing, it is a touching and deeply satisfying story of revolution which is unafraid to leave you with each smarting emotion far longer than you might be accustomed to.

Columbia Pictures have released the official UK poster for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

Directed by David Fincher (The Social Network), The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo is the second film to be adapted from the Swedish novel of the same name by acclaimed author Stieg Larsson.

The film stars Rooney Mara, Daniel Craig, Robin Wright, Stellan Skarsgård, Christopher Plummer, Geraldine James, Joely Richardson, Joel Kinnaman, Yorick van Wageningen, Goran Visnjic, Alexandra Daddario, and is scheduled to be released in the UK on December 26.

Synopsis: One fateful day several years ago, Harriet Vanger (Daddario) disappeared off the secluded island owned and inhabited by the powerful Vanger family. There was no corpse, no witnesses and no evidence. Nearly forty years later, investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Craig) reluctantly accepts the unusual and seemingly unsolvable assignment of finding out what really happened to Harriet. Genius hacker, Lisbeth Salander (Mara) is drawn into the case and the two form a fragile alliance as they dig into the sinister past of the Vangers and find out just how far they’re prepared to go to protect themselves and each other.
