Twitter fell into a predictable lovefest for the reboot, which has the (500) Days of Summer director take on one of the most beloved characters in the comicverse with Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone bringing Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy to life on screen and, as is very much the custom these days, in three sparkling dimensions.

Dave and Adam were in attendance last night and you can read Adam’s take on what was shown here, suffice to say that when the 4th of July rolls around there’ll be plenty of webheads desperate to see if Sony’s sudden reboot tactic has paid off. Given the talent involved, and the hyperbole spun last night, it seems The Amazing Spider-Man may well live up to its name.

Here’s the trailer!

The Amazing Spider-Man is still a good six months from our cinema screens but tonight we were invited to a very special peek at the film’s new trailer, followed by a tantalising sizzle reel.

That wasn’t the only surprise of the night, as key figures from this new take on the iconic webslinger were present in a truly global capacity, with Rhys Ifans taking the stage here in London, Emma Stone and producers Avi Arad and Matt Tolmach broadcasting live from Rio, and director Marc Webb and Peter Parker himself Andrew Garfield being beamed over from across the pond at LA and New York, respectively.

For anyone whose Spidey-senses were tingling a little after the first rather lacklustre glimpse of the friendly neighbourhood crime-fighter a couple of months back, you can all now relax. From the footage screened tonight, Webb appears to have made a sleeker and grittier version of the character, framing him in more of a real-world setting (or as close as can be for a guy who is able to crawl up walls) and re-tweaking the origin angle to provide a slightly different interpretation of the legend.

An early scene between Gwen Stacey and Peter Parker at school offered a funny and awkward interaction between the pair, echoing that same astutely-observed look at young romance which characterised Webb’s debut feature 500 Days of Summer. Thankfully, the director looks like he has more than what it takes when dealing with the bigger, action-heavy carnage, and the shots of Spidey swinging through his beloved Manhattan really benefit this time around from the technology being at a level which can really sell that web action. Everything looks a little ramped up this time around, and in particular, the sequences shown where Parker discovers and begins harnessing his new-found powers had a thrillingly visceral and grounded feel to them.

Time will tell if all these segments will add up to a truly spellbinding whole, but for the moment, I’m sure the lucky fans who had the chance to view this footage (the trailer is being released in the wee small hours of the morning) will undoubtedly be bumping The Amazing Spider-Man back up to the top of their most-anticipated summer features of this year, alongside the Bat.

Spare us a thought. We pitiful writers (do please pity us) subsist on a meagre diet of set images, teaser images, trailers, teaser trailers and recently teaser images for the teaser trailer for the trailer (see here and here for a hearty dose of overkill). Yes, it seems that we are doomed to a life of fumbling around in the cesspool of 21st century PR culture getting covered in slimy snippets of information, our nostrils filled with the stench of up to the minute minutiae. Well today you reach me at a new low as I (and by ‘I’ I mean Collider) rummage through what is essentially children’s toys for any dirty little snippets of news I can get my grubby hands on. Therefore it only seems right to warn you that throughout this article there will be a smattering of completely inconsequential, meaningless and only possibly accurate spoilers.

You see whilst studios like to leak out information about their upcoming release like the marketing mental Scrooges they are they often fail to keep a lid on those meddling toy manufacturers who’s products are often released in advance. I assume they don’t think that an adult of adult age doing what many assume to be an adult job would bother to stoop to such a low level to get his mucky spolierific fix. But what the fools didn’t expect was that I bloody well will stoop. So the joke’s on them. I think.

So as I edge my way around Idle Hands I am treated to a veritable smorgasbord of Mega Bloks box shots and more promotional material than I would care to have to look at. Whilst it soon becomes apparent that Mega Bloks is short hand for Tesco-Value Lego it also soon becomes apparent that here we get our first look at Spidey’s new enemy; Lizard. Well I say we get our first look, it’s actually our first look at his plastic not so fantastic counterpart. Looking like a cross between The Incredible Hulk, Fantastic Four’s The Thing and a cross eyed Dolph Lundgren with severe joint issues I guess it sheds very little light on what we’ll be treated to in the movie.

The main reason for my visit here though is that it’s a pretty sure fire bet that each of the situations depicted here in glorious Blok-O-Vision will make an appearance in the movie. So we’ve got some sort of thing with a roof and a ladder and a jet-ski – so that’ll be Sewer Lab HQ then. We’ve got a helicopter, a rooftop, a crane and the introduction of a fella called SWAT Lizard – so that’ll apparently be Oscorp Tower FX Battle and lastly we’re treated to Spidey and Lizard having a good old battle to the death in the descriptively titled Lizard Man Showdown.

So that’s what I’ve discovered. Was it worth it? Probably not…

The Nolan brothers’ conclusion to their Batman trilogy is of course not the only superhero blockbuster we can look forward to next summer, with Marc Webb’s The Amazing Spider-Man hitting our cinemas two weeks earlier at the start of July.

We got our first look at the film when the trailer hit back in July this year, and since then we’ve seen plenty of great posters, images, and banners. Marvel have now put out half a dozen brilliant new images from the upcoming film, via ComicBookMovie.com, and they give us another awesome look at the film’s leads, Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone.

Webb is taking the films back to the beginning, withGarfielddonning the Spidey suit once worn by Tobey Maguire, and Stone playing Gwen Stacy this time around, rather than Kirsten Dunst’s Mary Jane Watson. From what we’ve seen so far, the film looks to be a darker take on the superhero than the original three films, and I can’t wait to see what Webb’s done with it.

Along with Garfield and Stone, both of whom are very much deservedly rising young stars, the cast also includes Rhys Ifans as The Lizard, Martin Sheen and Sally Field as Ben and May Parker, Denis Leary as Captain Stacy, Chris Zylka as Flash Thompson, and Irrfan Khan as Dr. Ratha, with a script from Steve Kloves (the Harry Potter films), James Vanderbilt (Zodiac), and Alvin Sargent (Spider-Man 2 and 3).

Webb’s feature directorial debut, (500) Days of Summer, was so good, and pretty different to what I imagine The Amazing Spider-Man will be, which is yet another reason to be looking forward to this. I have a feeling the story is in safe hands. Garfield and Stone have been looking brilliant in their respective roles so far, and that only continues in these new images from the film. We’ll be getting it here in 3D next summer on 4th July, and if that isn’t a date already marked in your calendars, then set it down right now. And as usual with the first three and the last of these new images, click to enlarge.

American actor Cliff Robertson died at the age of 88 on Saturday September 10 from natural causes.

To the younger generation (God…I sound like my Dad!) Cliff Robertson will be best remembered as Uncle Ben in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man, also seen in flashback in Spider-Man 2 and 3.

In my childhood, he was a very familiar face in the mid sixties and seventies. Many of the films that he appeared in probably won’t register with most people but he made a big impact with me. Maybe it was Robertson’s calming demeanour and intelligent delivery that made you believe in every character that he played. You also felt that you knew him like some favourite Uncle.

He played Mosquito pilot wing commander Roy Grant in the British war film 633 Squadron (64). At the time I didn’t think that it was at all strange for an American officer to fly with the RAF. But of course now I know how important it was for British films to feature popular American stars of the time to boost cinema audiences in the USA.

In a complete contrast Cliff Robertson won the best actor Academy Award in 1969 for the critically acclaimed Charly (68). In this emotional and heartbreaking story, Robertson plays Charly Gordon, a mentally retarded janitor who works in a bakery and although he struggles to read and write he is a happy go-lucky soul with a kind heart. He is given the opportunity to have a brain operation following recent successful experiments with mice. This results in Charly gaining a genius IQ and he falls in love with his teacher played by Claire Bloom. Unfortunately, all is not what it seems.
This type of role also secured an Oscar for Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man (88) and a best actor nomination for Sean Penn in I Am Sam (2001) but lost out to Denzel Washington for Training Day (2001).

Following Charly he went back to helping us Brits to win the war, this time against the Japanese in Too Late The Hero (70) co-starring our very own Michael Caine and a plethora of British stalwarts such as Harry Andrews, Ian Bannen, Denholm Elliot and Ronald Fraser. Although the film was not a commercial hit, it’s worth a viewing to see Michael Caine on top form as cockney Private Tosh Hearne at loggerheads with Cliff Robertson’s ‘Yank’ officer.

My all time favourite Cliff Robertson character is the dodgy CIA executive Higgins in Three Days of the Condor (75). An intelligent conspiracy thriller with Robert Redford at his best as an innocent CIA book researcher (code name Condor) on the run from a cold and calculated hit man (Max von Sydow). Why does someone want Condor dead? What do they think he knows? Can he trust Higgins to bring him in safely? I thoroughly recommend that you watch the DVD.

Cliff Robertson was born in California so you would naturally assume that he would follow an acting career. However, at College he studied English Literature and wanted to be a playwright. He also spent time as a Merchant Marine and ironically he was later to play a certain Captain John F Kennedy in PT-109 (63). He found a job in the theatre working backstage but was eventually drawn to acting and he realised that he had a talent for it. After a spell in TV roles he landed a part in the sexual drama Picnic (55) starring William Holden and Kim Novak. I say sexual drama but these days a daytime soap would be more racy.

Unfortunately his life wasn’t without scandal. In 1977 Cliff Robertson did something that upset many of the big studios in Hollywood and Robertson didn’t work for quite a few years. A sex scandal? Drug abuse? No he exposed the head of Columbia studios David Begelman as a fraudster who forged Robertson’s signature on a $10,000 cheque which only came to light when the IRS came after the actor for non payment of tax. Despite Begelman being suspended and eventually convicted for fraud, the innocent Robertson came off far worse and was targeted with death threats which resulted in FBI protection.

His career never really recovered and he made a few duds in the 1980’s notably Class (83), Star 80 (83) as Hugh Hefner and Brainstorm (83) in which Natalie Wood died during the making of the film. He also went back to TV by agreeing to play Dr Michael Ranson in the American TV soap Falcon Crest (83-84).

This brings us full circle to 2002 and Sam Raimis Spiderman. Remember, “With great power comes great responsibility” and Cliff Robertson always gave 100%.

The first shows him in the sort of introspective pose he’ll no doubt adopt during some of the movie’s more emotionally complex scenes, while the second gives us a glimpse of him in a far more dynamic, web-slinging pose.

We’ve already seen a couple of photos of Garfield in costume – as well as a handful of ropey on-set images showing him awkwardly standing around in tracksuit bottoms between takes – and while these latest two don’t really show anything particularly new, we won’t complain about having the opportunity to look at the heavily textured new costume from a couple of different angles. Is it just me or does it look like he’s wearing football boots?

The Amazing Spider-Man opens next July. Expect plenty more photos of your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man between now and then.

If you missed the Sony panel, you can read Ezequiel’s write up of the panel including a video of Andrew Garfield arriving right here.

It comes creepy crawling it’s way to UK cinemas 4th July 2012!

All the big studios want to show off their new and upcoming movies in front of the big movies during the reason which is why HeyUGuys has been littered with trailer after trailer over the past few weeks. Last week we had The Dark Knight Rises and today it’s all about Spider-Man!

Here’s the latest in the form of The Amazing Spider-Man which is directed by Marc Webb and sees Andrew Garfield take the leading role as Peter Parker alongside Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Denis Leary, Campbell Scott, Irrfan Khan, Martin Sheen, Sally Field and with no doubt a cameo from comic book legend, Stan Lee.

We can expect the movie to hit 4th July 2012 and this is our first proper looks at what we can expect! Enjoy!

What do you think of the POV shots at the end? If it fails to load, click play and wait a bit, it’s currently being hammered!

When it was announced that the new Spider-Man film would be a high school reboot a lot of fans were worried, and disappointed that they’d never get to see John Malkovich face off against Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man in a fourth film but seeing more of Marc Webb’s film, and the great cast he has assembled, is just the ticket to convince the doubting quarters.

My favourite pic? Peter Parker solving the problem of crowded subway trains. Bring on your trailer Sony.

Click ahoy Spider-fans,

more gritty

Of course it will. But he goes on to say,

I related to Peter Parker so much because I felt like someone else inside…I loved the comic books and the animated TV series and I even dressed up as Spider-Man as a kid.

Animated TV series? Could he possibly mean…

On the question of working on The Amazing Spider-Man Sheen spoke briefly about his experience on set and his role in the film. Although none of this will probably be too surprising for anyone familiar with Spider-Man be aware that there are some spoilers for the film contained within the below quote (also keep in mind that this roundtable took place in February).

I’m not in any of the scenes where he’s Spider-man. He’s still a little boy. He’s a teenager when it starts. I’m a surrogate father really, I’m his uncle. And so all of our scenes are just like you and I talking now. I’m dealing with this adolescent who is having problems with changes, with hormones changing and his getting out of hand. I have to give him the marching orders and so forth. It’s all very normal. And the guy playing him is wonderful…

…He [Andrew Garfield] called me up and said he’d like to meet me and I said who are you and he said I’m playing your nephew. I said, you’re Spider-man! And we met for lunch and he was delightful. He just wanted to see who I was and whether I was open to changes, whether he could improvise with me. I was delighted and we had a wonderful time… I’ve never seen him in the uniform, I’ve never seen any of the stunts, any of the special effects, the green stuff. All my stuff is like normal acting and I don’t do anything with him otherwise. I’m dead in reel one y’know. I don’t do the end until I’m in New York. In April and May, that when I finish up with him. That’s where I get shot. There’s no special effects for me, that’s for the other characters.

The Amazing Spider-Man is currently set to be released in the UK on the 4th of July 2012

Speaking about roles for men of his age Sheen also spoke about the film Argo (a film that Ben Affleck is now supposedly directing) which has a role that he’s really interested in playing.

Argo, it’s a wonderful story… There’s a part in there I’d love to play. There’s probably not a chance in hell I’ll get. That’s just the space that my career is in right now, I’m seventy years old. I don’t get a lot of offers for those kinds of pictures. But I’m playing Uncle Ben, so that’s okay [laughs].

Finally, below you can find an audio snippet from the interview in which Sheen shares some Marlon Brando anecdotes and even does some impressions of Brando. These were frankly too entertaining to simply transcribe.

Marc Webb’s film stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone and is being shot in glorious 3D, and just over a month ago we had the chance to see Garfield in the suit and there followed a ton of pictures and footage of the filming with Spidey running through traffic – this is our first chance to really see the suit as Sony would like you to. I’m a fan.

So, what to make of ‘The Amazing’? It’s a great title which will please the fans of the earliest incarnations of the character and does enough to distance itself from the very recent Raimi trilogy.

Here’s that new picture, which features prominently on the new website http://theamazingspiderman-movie.com/,

When amateur photography offered our first on set look of the new Spider-Man costume in its entirety last week, it’s fair to say that not everybody was impressed. The material looked strangely shiny, its bright colours providing an odd contrast to the darker hues of the official Andrew Garfield promo shot, and what were those things on his feet? Spidey sneakers?!

Yet it seems that hope is not lost. Whether it was due to the awkward freeze frame of Spidey’s running or simply the quality of the camera, those shots offer no bearing how great today’s look. Perhaps we’ve just gotten used to things, but the latest set images (more of Garfield’s stuntman taking part in a suspected car chase) hold a lot of promise. Our hero looks lean and ready for action, his suit seems only half as gaudy and – most excitingly of all – he’s doing some web swinging!

In these well captured shots of some impressive stunt work, we now have evidence that this Spidey incarnation will be making use of practical effects for some of its high flying action. The weird shoes might still be there, but there’s always a chance that the stuntman’s costume may differ from Garfield’s. And if these photos mean there’ll be less dodgy CGI shots of Spidey carrying his love interest to safety, then we’re all for it.

The new Spider-Man film, directed by Marc Webb, will star Andrew Garfield, Rhy Ifans, Emma Stone and Denis Leary. The 3D release is planned for July 2012. Check out the new pictures below (click to enlarge).

Tons of set pics have made their way online but these are the clearest so far, and give us a look at the mask, which wasn’t present when the first official picture of Andrew Garfield in the movie was released. Also of note are the mechanical webshooters, which you can see in the zoomed in images below.

MTV had their hands on these first, and I’m guessing we can expect a few more before the shoot is done.

Yet with casting news seemingly long finalised and filming already under way, one memorable Spidey regular has been largely unmentioned. Who will be playing Peter Parker’s Daily Bugle boss, J. Jonah Jameson?

The answer, according to IGN‘s “highly reliable” sources, is nobody.

Yes, although there were once rumours of either John Slattery or Sam Elliott taking on the role that J.K. Simmons played so wonderfully in Sam Raimi’s Spidey franchise, it now seems that there will be no enraged editors shouting at our hero this time around.

Yet The Daily Bugle itself will definitely be getting a mention, as recently published set photos demonstrate – so, what’s the deal? Well, with Webb’s reboot set to take things back to high school, it may simply be the case that Peter Parker’s working days are yet to come. This news, combined with the removal of both Mary Jane Watson and Harry Osbourne and the reinstatement of original comic book love interest Gwen Stacy, suggests we could really see Spider-Man really getting back to basics.

Webb’s reboot stars Andrew Garfield, Rhys Ifans, Emma Stone and Denis Leary. It is set to be released in July 2012.
