Written by Emma Forrest, Your Voice in My Head centres on a young woman (Watson) who attempts suicide before being saved by a New York-based psychiatrist who’s dying of cancer.

It is yet unknown who will play the psychiatrist, but such prolific actors as George Clooney (The Descendants) and Tom Hanks (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close) are said to be in the mix.

Warner Bros. Pictures acquired the rights late last week, and have made it a top priority.

Expect production on this to start before the end of the year, before Yates moves over to Sony to direct A Reliable Wife.

For those of you who sat through 2010′s Eat, Pray, Love, you know just how horrifying a Murphy chiller can be. With Miller having written last year’s found footage shocker Apollo 18, the untitled project – for which details are firmly under wraps – will follow Murphy’s next scheduled release, an adaptation of Larry Kramer’s AIDS centric play, The Normal Heart.

Should anyone still have reservations for the film’s potential, the news that it is to be co-produced by Drive’s John Palermo (alongside Murphy) goes some way to readdressing the project’s cool quotient.

Variety had this one first.

Having written about the realms of US politics (The American President, the frankly peerless West Wing) and then TV production (Studio 60), Aaron Sorkin, who for my money is as gifted and talented a writer as there is out there, now seems to be setting his sights on the various icons of the IT world. After his deserved Oscar® win for The Social Network and its formidable dissection of the somewhat enigmatic Mark Zuckerberg, Sorkin may now be setting his sights on Steve Jobs, the recently deceased head of Apple.

In an interview with E! Online, Sorkin was enthusiastic if a little non-committal:-

“Sony has asked me to write the movie and it’s something I’m strongly considering. Right now I’m just in the thinking-about-it stages, it’s a really big movie and it’s going to be a great movie no matter who writes it.”

Sony reportedly bought up the rights to Walter Isaacson’s biography of Jobs for a cool $1m, amidst the general and seemingly globe-spanning swell of interest in Jobs following his tragic death earlier this year. That biography shifted close to 400,000 copies in its first week and Sorkin is said to be reading it at the moment while he considers Sony’s invitation to write the script for the film adaptation.

Apparently, The Hollywood Reporter asked veteran casting director Sharon Bialy who might be a good fit for Jobs in a film of his life. Her suggestions were Ashton Kutcher, Andrew Garfield or Shia LeBeouf for the younger years and Keanu Reeves, Ralph Fiennes or Noah Wyle for the older Job. Heaven help us. Ashton Kutcher and Keanu Reeves? Why not Seann William Scott and Jack Black? Garfield and Fiennes seem altogether more fitting, but what do I know? Let’s go with good actors rather than getting hung up on physical resemblance.

Once Sorkin has made his mind up, we’ll let you know.

Dreamworks were on board, but have now dropped out and although Summit have expressed interest, an MGM-Sony joint venture now seems to have thrown its hat in.

From a script by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter, Antoine Fuqua should still direct this tale of the rise, fall and rise of a welterweight boxer. Sutter describes it as a metaphorical biopic for Eminem’s recent life, following on from 8 Mile, but translating Eminem’s struggles from a rapping career to one in the ring:-

“In a way, this is a continuation of the 8 Mile story, but rather than a literal biography, we are doing a metaphorical narrative of the second chapter of his life. He’ll play a world champion boxer who really hits a hard bottom, and has to fight to win back his life for his young daughter. At its core, this is a retelling of his struggles over the last five years of his life, using the boxing analogy. I love that the title refers to [Eminem] being a lefty, which is to boxing what a white rapper is to hip hop; dangerous, unwanted and completely unorthodox. It’s a much harder road for a southpaw than a right-handed boxer.”

With MGM producing and Sony distributing, their joint bid is said to be the front runner. It would be good to see this project get some traction and move forward into production, but for the time being we will have to be patient.

However it is not this film (which is called Anonymous – see the marvellous trailer here), but Emmerich’s next that we are concenred with today and THR are placing the director’s next project, entitled Singularity, with Sony’s Columbia Pictures. The studio have a long standing understanding with Emmerich: every few years he dreams up a new way of ending the world and Sony stump up the cash.

Coming Soon have confirmed that May the 17th 2013 will be the release date for the film and there are no details at all confirmed, except that Emmerich has written the script himself and the man is fond of a barnstorming end of days so perhaps that’s on the cards this time?

Its title may change however to avoid a clash with the forthcoming time travelling romance film from Roland Joffe called, obviously, Singularity.

Time for another Hollywood remake of a successful French thriller from the last few years back, you say?

Early this year saw the 2008 French film Pour Elle (Anything for Her) remodelled for an US audience and retitled The Next Three Days. Starring Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks, the film did extremely modest business in the States and over here, but that hasn’t stopped Warner Bros and Universal Pictures from acquiring the rights to the novel which was the source material for another hit French mainstream drama/thriller, Tell No One.

To be fair, the book was written by popular US mystery writer Harlan Coben before being sculpted into a rather cracking foreign-language film in 2006, and The Hollywood Reporter claims that the book was originally set up at Sony as far back as 2002.

To further ease any worries, Hollywood’s newly rechristened golden child, Ben Affleck, is attached to direct, with a script by Chris Terrio (the writer on the director’s next big project with Warner, entitled Argo) and past Spielberg collaborators, Kathleen Kennedy and Frank Marshall, are also onboard as producers.

The signs are looking good on this one. The story of a paediatrician who begins to receive mysterious emails showing the wife he believed was brutally murdered eight years ago, older and very much alive, is a great premise for a film, and given Affleck’s recent success where he’s proved a strong presence both in front and behind the camera, we could be looking at a strong companion piece to the original version, rather than a pale imitation.

A fan of our site, Adam Christopher, has unearthed a blog called Toys & Gadgets which is running an image grab (see below) from what looks like an official Sony press release from the Licensing International Expo currently running in Las Vegas, which states that Ghosterbusters 3 will be arriving in 2013!

Wow! Wonder if Bill Murray has finally given in after months of uncertainty and signed on. We’ll keep you posted if we hear any further developments, but it’s probably safe to say that if this is indeed true, Sony will be in the process of making some kind of announcement very soon. Fingers crossed!

Anyhoo, enough chit chat. It appears I may have accidentally leaked your credit card and personal details to all and sundry. Oh, and that may possibly, maybe, have happened six days ago.”

If that had come from a friend, you would already have disowned, screamed at and possibly set them aflame by now.

But while Sony does its best scrambling around attempting to handle more damage control than, well, Ryan Giggs (DON’T SUE ME), there are still more than enough reasons to trust once more in your trusty PS3.

It was our credit cards they lost – not our perspective (that, admittedly, is devil-may-care silver lining at its finest – but at least it sounded snazzy).

LITTLEBIGPLANET 2

Quite simply the most creative, genius and utterly sublime gaming experience you’re likely to have this year. And the good part (depending on your attention span)? Your fun factor and creative kudos is in almost direct correlation to the effort you put into it.

For every game you play that you can pick holes in or complain that ‘feature a’ or ‘function b’ wasn’t included by the developers? Well now you can do the hard work yourself and craft whatever you want – whether racing, puzzle, role-playing or fighting game, you’re the one in control of the cutest characters and most inspired level design around.

KILLZONE 3

Admittedly, it wasn’t quite the all-conquering FPS Sony had been hoping for (tacking on some last minute 3D and motion controls do not make a genre leader).

However, as a theatrical and – importantly – addictive balls/grenades out shooter, you can’t go wrong. It’s as polished and playable a FPS as they come, proving a far more rounded experience – from graphics to storyline and multiplayer – than the system has had so far.

Also, you know, jet packs. Lots of jet packs.

GOD OF WAR 3

Kratos’ ascendance to the Godly big leagues was accompanied, appropriately enough, by a system that finally had the graphical oomph to match his head-ripping, torso-shredding, button-bashing rage.

And my, how pretty it all looks.

There’s scale unlike anything you’ve seen or experienced before (Shadow of the Midget is a more fitting title for Team Ico’s legendary epic after playing this), and while the core gameplay is familiar for franchise fans, when it’s been all but perfected into a controller hammering, combo-heavy action-fest of joy, you can’t really complain.

GRAN TURISMO 5

Some of the hardcore considered it a disappointment, but then when you have a fanbase as mentally car-crazy as this, it was never going to satisfy everyone’s demands.

It may not be as instantly pick-up-and-playable as a Burnout or Dirt, but then the clue’s in the subtitle – ‘The Real Driving Simulator’.

Rated and judged as its own very specific but hugely successful niche, we defy anyone to find a better alternative. It’s bursting with tracks, cars, mind-boggling physics and – most important of all – accuracy.

Well, aside from the whole ‘damage’ thing that is, but at least the updates have started to sooth that fan-ranting open sore.

UNCHARTED 2

If Uncharted has somehow escaped your attention, then we can comprehensively say that – as a likely lover of both movies and games (you are reading this on HeyuGuys after all) – you won’t find a better action game anywhere.

Ever.

Finally, genuinely owning the ‘cinematic’ tag that’s bandied about far too often with any game that’s decided to sprinkle in a few cut scenes, Uncharted provides the coolest, funniest protagonist in the gaming world and then throws all manner of amazing set-pieces, electric firefights and sexy aides to help him along the way on the most Indiana Jones-esque quest since The Last Crusade (aliens, schmaliens).

And just when you thought you couldn’t improve upon perfection, along comes the tantalisingly arousing Uncharted 3 peering over the horizon.

MULTIMEDIA CENTRE

Not only is it a shiny Blu-ray player (ooh) but you’ve got everything you could want in a living room multimedia centre – all the terrestrial channel on-demand services on, well, demand (4OD, iPlayer, ITV Player all at the touch of a controller button), it syncs up with your PSP to provide literally minutes upon minutes of cross-platform joy, and has a comprehensive video and photo management system to boot.

Reason enough, we think you’ll agree, to put the whole ‘financial details leak’ to the back of your mind and get back to enjoying it for what it is – a corker of a gaming console with enough quality games and shiny doodads to keep you entertained for a while yet – at least, until the PS4 is announced in (we’re guessing) 2012.

The cutting of a film trailer – a good film trailer, is a fine art.

The quality of the choices you make, the shots you select, how you use the music and the decision to tease or to throw your best shots at the screen – all of these must be faced and for a group of London students the decisions they made had some very important consequences.

Forty-one film students were given the chance to re-edit the recent Priest trailer (which you can see here) and give their own spin on the world Scott Stewart and Paul Bettany have created.

Once the tast was completed three of the students were chosen to fly out to Los Angeles and show their new trailers to the film’s stars and director who then had the task of selecting their favourite.

It’s a fascinating story as its one thing to spur on film students to learn part of the filmmaking process by creating something new and exciting, but its quite another to have their work shown to established filmmakers themselves.

Having seen the trailers it’s testament to the creativity and understanding of the chosen three that they made such varied choices which resulted in the three distinct visions.

You can see the story unfold, and the reaction from the director of Priest, in the video below and we’ve got an exclusive look at the three trailers chosen – check those out beneath the next video.

This news has been floating around for the past 24 hours and I wasn’t going to post it but then decided that hearing the news that Bond 23 is drawing ever closer can only be a good thing. This is the news that Sony Pictures Entertainment has effectively joined forced with MGM to co-finance and distribute the movie across the globe. This can only be a good thing for Bond lovers (which includes us) bringing us one step closer to seeing Bond 23 on the big screen.

They also talk about Bond 24 also being financed in the same way over the next five years. All good considering MGM were in more than $3bn in debt less than a year ago! Not a bad turnaround eh?!

I’ll let the Press release which we’ve been sent do the talking:

MGM PARTNERS WITH SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENT

IN WORLDWIDE THEATRICAL DISTRIBUTION

AND CO-FINANCING PACT

Culver City, April 13, 2011 – Sony Pictures Entertainment will remain in the James Bond business after reaching an agreement with MGM to co-finance and theatrically market and distribute Bond 23 worldwide, it was announced today by MGM Co-Chairmen and Chief Executive Officers Gary Barber and Roger Birnbaum and Sony Pictures Chairman and CEO Michael Lynton and Co-Chairman Amy Pascal. Sony will release the next film in this iconic franchise on November 9, 2012 throughout the world except for select International territories, where MGM will directly oversee distribution.

Sony Pictures and MGM look forward to Sony Pictures co-financing and distributing Bond 24 on a similar basis.

Additionally, MGM and Sony Pictures have agreed to explore co-financing opportunities on future motion pictures produced by each of the respective studios for the next five years.

The two studios have collaborated directly and indirectly in recent years on numerous films, including Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, 21, Yours, Mine and Ours, The Pink Panther, and the forthcoming Kevin James comedy Zookeeper.

The announcement of the agreement to distribute Bond 23 adds another high-profile title to Sony’s 2012 slate, which also includes Men in Black 3 and The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as I Hate You, Dad, starring Adam Sandler, Here Comes the Boom, starring Kevin James, 21 Jump Street, Resident Evil 5 and Total Recall.

“Sony Pictures is the ideal studio partner for us as MGM re-enters the filmmaking business. We have longstanding relationships with Michael and Amy and look forward to what promises to be a prosperous future together,” said Barber and Birnbaum.

“In addition to working together on Bond, this deal expands our relationship with MGM as we explore co-financing opportunities on other high-profile projects,” Lynton said. “Gary and Roger are incredibly thoughtful and experienced leaders who are outstanding creative executives and respected moviemakers. While we are excited to be back in the Bond business, we also look forward to future collaborations and I am confident that this agreement will be long-term, lucrative, and beneficial to both studios.”

“After successfully working on the re-launch of the James Bond franchise with Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, we could not be more proud or privileged to continue our association with Barbara Broccoli, Michael G. Wilson, Daniel Craig, and the talented teams at EON and MGM,” said Pascal.

When Sony released Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace, the films had record-high grosses for the Bond franchise, with Casino Royale taking in $599 million in worldwide ticket sales and Quantum of Solace generating $577 million.

Variety are reporting that the Men in Black star is toying with producing a remake of the musical Annie, with daughter Willow taking the lead as the spunky, (erm) ginger-haired orphan.

Details are sparse as yet, but it has been mentioned that Jay-Z, who collaborated with Willow on her pop song Whip My Hair, may have a hand in the music. You may recall that the rapper actually sampled a song from the original musical (It’s the Hard Knock Life) on his 1998 single Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem). Look’s like everything has finally come full circle for him.

Sony are onboard and given that the Karate Kid made more than $350 million worldwide, they must have high hopes here.

Wish I was one of Smith’s kids. Imagine Christmas morning – instead of unwrapping your presents to find you’d received a film on DVD, there would be an actual feature there for you!

Ray Maguire, Sony UK’s boss-man, has urged the government and education officials to begin integrating video games into the national curriculum.

Speaking at the Learning Without Frontiers conference, Maguire preached to the audience that gaming needs support from the powers-that-be if its full potential is to be realised.

“The time is right now to do it,” he urged. “We shouldn’t wait too much longer. A collaborative effort is absolutely required, it needs endorsement at the highest level, it needs someone in government to say we will do this.”

He argued that through innovative technology such as the Playstation Move, PSP and LittleBigPlanet, teachers have a whole new medium to interact with their class that they’re not making the most of.

“We’ve already started courses for teachers, student side and school side,” he said. “We want to hear from schools and local authorities interested in tackling the issues in front of them.”

We definitely see where he’s coming from, but can’t help but feel that if we were given LittleBigPlanet at school, we’d have spent far more time making sackboy beat-em-ups than marvelling at the intricate physics involved.

A ‘head-mounted 3D display’ (pictures courtesy of Endgadget) was revealed at CES 2011, which features two Sony panels that will allow you to play 3D games and watch 3D movies and TV without a 3D TV.

Each panel features high quality, high contrast pictures for the left and right eye which basically means there’s no confusion between the two.

Sony’s Deputy President Hiroshi Yoshioka unsurprisingly raved about the experience, with a slightly wife-enraging diatribe on how awesome Gran Turismo 5 looks when played with the goggles.

“As a big gamer myself, I couldn’t be excited more than when I first played Gran Turismo 5 with this head-mounted display because nobody, not even my wife, could interrupt me so that I could get a higher score,” he said.

While there are currently only a few 3D games on the market (parts of Tron: Legacy and Batman: Arkham Asylum are the most notable), all the major developers have plans to release more in the future.

But with glass-less 3D TVs just around the corner, is Sony’s new invention redundant before its even released?

The event looks like an awful lot of fun and coincided with showing off the new TVs for sporting events that we can now watch without having to leave our sofa!

Our friends from Upbeat were in attendance and were able to follow the action as it unfolded with the likes of BBC Formula 1 presenter, Jake Humphrey who commentated on the final and presented the away. The winner would be given a trip to Madrid along with a brand new 40″ Sony Bravia TV. I’ll let you have a look at the video below for the full lowdown.

It’s poor opening weekend means it has a long way to go to break-even and reclaim the $140M production budget.

Sony’s action-thriller The Tourist, starring Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp, landed in second place, bringing in an estimated $17M, again falling short of expectations.

Disney’s Tangled dropped to third taking $14.6M, bringing it’s three-week domestic total to $115.6M.

In it’s fourth week, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 earned another $8.5, reaching an incredible four-week domestic total of $257.7M.

Unstoppable rounded off the top five with an estimated $3.8M, bringing it’s domestic total to $74.3M.

Darren Aronofsky’s psychological ballet thriller Black Swan climbed to six, earning a very impressive $3.3M in only 90 locations.

Completing the top ten were Burlesque ($3.2M), Love and Other Drugs ($3M), Due Date ($2.6M) and Megamind ($2.5M).

Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter has already dismissed the yet-to-be-announced (but-blatantly-obvious) sequel to Sony’s handheld console.

“I think the PSP was dead on arrival and I think the PSP2 is going to be dead on arrival,” he exclaimed on his Pach Attack webcast (courtesy of MCV).

He didn’t stop there either, blaming Apple for condemning the future of handheld consoles, with only Nintendo’s upcoming Nintendo 3DS offered a brief respite.

“We’re approaching saturation in the handheld market,” he revealed. “We’re starting to see DS hardware sales crack, the iPod Touch is cutting into the handheld market. It looks to me like young kids are just as happy playing with the iPod Touch.”

“The 3DS will prolong the handheld market for manufacturers, but ultimately I think handhelds are in trouble. What’s the difference if you play Tetris on an iPod Touch or on a DS? Well, you pay a buck on the iPod Touch and you pay $20 on the DS.

“After the 3DS has had its little rush I think the handhelds will continue to decline.”

While Apple’s all conquering handheld gaming devices have certainly made a sizeable dent on the market, we can’t help but feel that it’s a tad early to write off the next generation of consoles.
