Good news fans of all things Game of Thrones as HBO have announced that the popular TV series will return to US screens 1st April. Not work yet on when we’ll get it in the UK but it shouldn’t be much later than the 1st on Sky Atlantic if the previous season is anything to go by.

The news come from Variety who tell us the second season will be 10 episodes long and I am very excited about it returning.

HBO has set April 1 as the date for the 10-episode second-season premiere of ”Game of Thrones.”

Fantasy drama was a huge ratings winner for the pay cabler in its debut last year, as well as a massive profit center for the net since HBO produces the series as well. In addition to be a domestic hit, ”Thrones” drew millions of viewers around the world.

Following the BBC broadcast this autumn, 12 December sees the DVD release of The Killing II – one of the most highly anticipated crime-drama series in years. In May, The Killing won a BAFTA AWARD for Best International Television show fending off competition from Mad Men and Martin Scorcese’s Boardwalk Empire. To mark the release, we have a Season 2 boxset to give away!

The brand new 10-part series is once again written by Søren Sveistrup and sees the return of the formidable and tenacious Sarah Lund, superbly played by Sofie GråbØl, who is recalled by Chief Inspector Lennart Brix to investigate a series of murders that will test her to her very limits.

Spread over eleven days, the tightly told story of a complex, highly suspenseful criminal case shakes Denmark’s government and military to their very core.

Sky retained a large amount of secrecy surrounding the launch of their new production. After initially being asked for my measurements (waist, height, hips, bra size) and having no information but “all will be revealed at the event,” curiosity was certainly an understatement. Only a few days before, it was finally revealed we were to attend the Boardwalk Empire Season 2 launch party!!

On entering the “Candlelight Club,” and by this I mean bending through a secret four foot passage way in the wall, it was a true transportation back to an evening in the 20’s. After being ushered into a dressing room to don more suitable attire for the evening- a slinky sequin dress, pearls, head-dress and of course lipstick rouge, it was time for a taster of what Season 2 had in store!

For those of you not familiar with the Series, it is inspired by the book “Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times and Corruption of Atlantic City” by Nelson Johnson, and produced by Terence Winter and Martin Scorsese. Starring Steve Buscemi as Enoch “Nucky” Thompson, the corrupt undisputed ruler of both the legal/illegal world, the series is set in Atlantic City in the 1920s against a backdrop of inequality, racism, prostitution and above all the Prohibition of alcohol.

The opening episode of Season 2 continues in this fashion, diving straight into pre-depression America with the scenes shifting between a typical flash ’20s party and the illegal dealing and consumption of alcohol. It is full of violence, strained relationships, subtle humour and ultimately the arrest of the big dog himself. Not wanting to give too much away, this show airs on Sky Atlantic on 8th October at 9pm so don’t miss out!!

Overall, it was an entertaining evening of burlesque dancers, live jazz music performed by a London band, the “Shirt tail Stompers,” along with an assortment of cocktails. The only element that could have improved this night was the venue which, if stripped of its decor, was rather run-down; although perhaps the back-alley look was what they were going for. Nevertheless, the efforts made to transform the space have to be given a lot of credit as the masses of candles, 1920s newspapers, Brooklyn beer and numerous other factors resulted in a great atmosphere.

After the evening’s entertainment, we were escorted home in a slick black BMW. What a lovely end to the evening, although I hear HBO managed to arrange for two, 1920s vintage subways to function on the tracks of Manhattan!! Ah well, it’s impossible to have it all!

As momentum builds towards the imminent arrival of season 2 of acclaimed and accomplished zombie series The Walking Dead, we have another trailer for you.

Admittedly this one is exceedingly brief, offering little more than the perspective that Andrew Lincoln’s Sheriff Rick Grimes isn’t really a law officer anymore, such designations proving irrelevant to the new reality in which he and his new companions now find themselves.

There’s not much more to say really, other than to confess my unashamed excitement and anticipation for the next instalment of this scintillating show.

You’ve got to love a good gag reel where you get to see the actors let loose a little on set and how they react when they mess up their lines! To celebrate the release of Warehouse 13 Season 2 on DVD 19th September, Universal Playback have given us the gag reel from the DVD extras and it’s a great watch!

Zombies, Vampires, Werewolves – they are all very much back in vogue, on small and big screens. Twilight, True Blood and of course The Walking Dead. Its first season was undoubtedly a slow-burn affair, but even in six short episodes it managed to establish convincing characterisations and story arcs, packing the sort of emotional heft and impact rarely expected of or achieved by genre film-making.

Season 2 therefore comes laden with hefty expectations, not helped by the departure of executive producer Frank Darabont. We have actually brought you this trailer before, but it has since been removed from YouTube. So here it is again, in case you missed it before. It looks like really good, strong stuff and if you haven’t seen season 1 yet, catch yourself up as quickly as you can – this is high quality television that is not to be missed.

Given the ubiquity of zombie films, it was impressive to say the least that The Walking Dead managed to inject fresh life (sorry) into the genre, albeit on the small screen which necessarily gives more space for developing better fleshed-out (sorry) character arcs and mythology. At a tight and pacy six episodes, season one was gripping, visceral, affecting stuff and left all of us hungry for more (last time, I promise).

If IMDb is to be believed, we’re looking at 13 episodes for season 2 and so I have everything crossed, hoping it won’t result in a dilution of quality, or a dearth of good ideas. The US will see it in the autumn and presumably we in the UK will get it, as before, on F/X and then Channel 5.

Collider have posted a trailer for season 2, though it describes it as a fan teaser. Who knows? It looks good, that’s all I’ll say for the time being. We’ve had a poster to feast on already (okay, maybe one more), with some troublingly funky looking eyes and this teaser gives us precious little else to go on, other than the blessed assurance that season 2 is on the way and we don’t have long to wait.

Roll on autumn.

Our friends from Upbeat have given us this new video where we have a look at what we might expect from season two of Star Wars: The Clone Wars Season Two with interviews with the stars and creators of the TV show.

The interviews conducted are with Ashley Eckstein (Ahsoka Tano), Dee Bradley Baker (Clone Troopers), James Arnold Taylor (Obi-Wan Kenobi), and director, Dave Filoni.

To celebrate the DVD release of US biker drama Sons of Anarchy season 2 (well worth a look if you haven’t seen an episode), I unwittingly signed up to hitch a ride with a group of grizzled-looking bikers as they roared around the Kent countryside for the day.

My initial concerns as to whether my bulky 6” 4 frame would sit comfortably on the back of one of these huge hogs soon disappeared as we blazed through the tranquil and scenic back routes, leaving in our path a trail of terror and destruction (sort of).

While the gang members in the Sons of Anarchy juggle various “day jobs” and engage in all sorts of criminal activity after hours, the guys we rode with were far removed from any dodgy lifestyle, and to my surprise, were quite normal (one was actually a pastor, although it wasn’t something I would have guessed from just looking at him!)

All in all, it was a fun day and not only did I get over my anxiety of riding on one of those beasts (I hadn’t been on a bike since the age of 13), but I also gained a new-found respect for this sub-culture and finally understood the appeal of it all.

Still, I think I’d be at the very bottom of the list if I applied to join the Sons of Anarchy though.

With the explosive end to the first season of T:TSSC all we were left with, excepting a charred robot corpse, were questions, and given the seemingly constant threat of cancellation most US TV shows seem to live with it’s gratifying that giving T:TSSC a second series allowed the creators to delve further into the Terminator mythology and spend more time in industrial labyrinths and watching things get blown up. And it looks beautiful in Blu-ray.

What I enjoyed most about the first series was the glimpses of the future world, so evocatively rendered in the first two Terminator films, and how the present is informed by our knowledge of the future world, and how the extended Connor family survive under the weight of the expectation that knowledge bought. Now with Cameron, the friendly Terminator, fizzing and popping a spark or two and her possibly sinister agenda is given more air to breathe, further soldiers from the future sent back to help, or hinder, Sarah Connor and her son John becoming the future leader of the resistance, and the formative years of Skynet and Cyberdyne and their AI experiments, the second series of T:TSSC is an improvement on the first in every way.

There is no better way to discover a new series than on a DVD box set, and if you’ve not yet caught up with this show I’d recommend it, particularly if Terminator: Salvation left you colder than a red-eyed exoskeleton. The trials and tribulations of the present and future John Connor are enhanced greatly by the luxury of time a 22 episode run allows, and the more we learn of the birth of the software and systems which become the murderous Terminator AI and the ethical questions it poses adds considerable depth to the original Terminator films.

Though they cannot compete on an action level, and often lapse (but never dally for too long) into family soap opera territory, each episode is a self contained part of the Terminator puzzle, and this series becomes more about the machines than the humans. And – yes, there is the patented Terminator hunt with stone faced chases and shotguns taking chunks out of everything and lots of staring at computer screens and talk of destiny and fate, but it works, and you’ll find yourself sucked in.

The sad news is that this series was canceled after this season, and would have benefited from another season or a final mini series. While not many people mourned its, seemingly inevitable, fall from the network’s graces it is far less trivial and ephemeral than much that survived on the TV schedules. Don’t mistake me – this is not The Wire, nor does it do too well in the comparisons with the recent Battlestar Galactica series (which it shares themes of paranoia and conflict between man and machine), but it is a solid world and asks interesting questions and has a lot to say about the themes of the Terminator series.

It’s worth your time, and worth seeking out on Blu-ray. You’ll get 22 episodes of which only a few are throwaway, characters that may take their time in settling down but by the end they are comfortable in their skin and the writers allow them to drive the story, making for an enjoyable watch. And casting Garbage diva Shirley Manson may seem an odd choice but it works.

There are the obligatory gag reels, deleted scenes and commentaries on the discs, and it’s well presented and strong enough to make it worthwhile watch. We’ve got a couple of clips below and the Blu-ray and DVDs are out now.
