‘The woman who will not die’, Sidney Prescott, re-surfaces again in a fourth outing, along with embattled characters, the amicable Sheriff Dewey Riley and fearsome reporter Gale Weathers in yet another Wes Craven directed installment of the Scream franchise.

Without giving the game away (because we’re embargoed to the hilt) and spoiling the ending, or revealing the kill scenes and who remains alive, suffice to say there is always someone left standing to tell the tale, or there’s absolutely no point to the whole thing.

The story still follows Sidney (Neve Campbell), now the author of a self-help book, who returns home to Woodsboro for her last book-signing date and to stay with family, only for the dreaded nightmare that made her a celebrity to start all over again. This sees her reconnecting with Dewey (David Arquette) and Weathers (Courteney Cox), who are now a married couple, to try and save the town in danger from Ghostface.

Although all the old faces are back – and some more polished than others, mainly Cox in full cougar appearance who renders ex-real-life hubby Arquette a little older and wearier than his years, this film offers some welcome new faces and fresh blood (no pun intended), including Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere. The latter gives the fifteen-year-old franchise a much-needed lease of life and cool factor. Fans of the franchise get the originals, including their heroine Sidney, merely playing a familiar part, and some newbies in the same generic package, following similar plot patterns and throwing out red herrings as in the previous films.

However, eleven years on from the last, Scream 4 is very much more tech savvy in today’s terms, as well as self aware in ‘what makes a successful slasher film’. There is also a lot more parody at play. But Craven still uses the reliable stalker telephone call to bring a very real sense of dread – and hearing it still manages to send a chill down the spine. What’s not necessarily scary anymore is seeing the ghoul leaping around like it’s on fire – spoilt by seeing too much Scream fancy dress at Halloween, or hearing the black-and-white killer’s comical gruff telephone manner. That said the premise of the bogeyman lurking in the obvious horror-film hideouts is fully explored in this and challenged, and it certainly delivers its fair share of jumpy moments.

With a film conscious of being the very best scary movie it can be, Scream writer Kevin Williamson has upped his game and taken on board things that did not make sense in Scream 3 – reverting back to the original films’ ideas even, to deliver a more realistic explanation. And it works in some clever self diagnosis and previous Craven cinematic greats within some snappily edited sequences.

Basically, Scream 4 is much the same bag of bloody gory tricks but with more geek gadgets and a far better and more inventive plot, so fans can breathe a sigh of relief and revel in one more outing to support Ghostface in his body count: Does Sidney finally meet her maker? We can’t say, but it’s touch and go at times…

I for one couldn’t be any more excited about the release of Scream 4 on Friday. With over eleven years to atone for the admitted misstep that was the third instalment, every new piece of footage released only serves to whet appetites everywhere.

The latest feature to provide insight into the production – this time with a Courteney Cox slant – is no exception, with the returning Gale Weathers voicing her adoration of director Wes Craven and noting her favourite moment from the franchise to date.

Starring Neve Campbell, David Arquette, Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere alongside Cox, and with only two days remaining until it hits theatres, does Scream 4 have the potential to be your new scary movie?

With Scream 4 lurking, knife in hand, around the corner Wes Craven has a lot riding on his return to Woodsboro.

In the ten years since the first Scream trilogy petered out in a mess of self reference and bloodless gorethrashing the world of horror has felt the force of torture, zombies, low-budget shockers and a confused resurgence of exploitation flicks. My Soul to Take is a tawdry, fright free dirge; it is  a mess of conventions and superficial shocks that somehow came from the same creative mind of a man whose nightmares became icons of the 80s and 90s. I have no idea how this happened.

Beginning with a brutal murder of a pregnant woman by her  schizophrenic and seemingly invincible husband,  we are left with a newborn baby and his older sister who witnessed the attack. It’s a nasty beginning and the not-really-dead crazed murderer disappearing after chewing to pieces the ambulance crew carrying his body away from the crime scene we are thrust seventeen years forward. It’s a sleepy start with the boogieman of the picture, named ‘Ripper’ (seriously) no more terrifying than a thousand direct-to-DVD loonies and when we meet the gaggle of pretty young things who taunt each other about the legend it’s time to get out the cliche list and lie lazily back while the torpid drag of the film plays out.

School cliques, jocks and geeks, dozy parents, a town with a spooky legend celebrated annually by boozing teens, blind chases through empty school halls, multiple guttings in the woods, the closing of bathroom mirrors, jump scares and a twist ending so obvious you expect the cast to come on screen at the end with a synchronised wink. There is no invention, no terror, nothing to engage the audience and no reward for anyone sticking with it until the credits roll.

The alternate endings included on the DVD are out of tone with the rest of the film and no more than a strange curio while the deleted and extended scenes are the real horror contained herein.

Wes Craven is capable of so much more, we’ve seen it again and again. By playing so close to the horror conventions he helped create, then parody, we’re back to the beginning in a world when Ti West and Adam Green are taking the influences of the past masters and creating new nightmares and we’re a long way from Craven’s New Nightmare and the invention and introspection which helped shape the new wave of horror. We have to hope that Scream 4 is some sort of return to form as this film is a shadow of the work Craven is capable of. If you see this film coming, run the other way and don’t look back.

Today’s addition is another international poster, declaring that for a new decade, there are new rules. Those rules presumably resulting in lots of blood and dead bodies. Again. Whether this means that “no-one is safe” this time around and some top-billed stars will get filleted, we can but dream.

Let’s be clear – this is not Vivian Kubrick’s The Making of “The Shining” so don’t expect a bad word to be said about the parody beyond parody that the Scream series had become by the third film and instead watch and learn why you should be looking forward to the new film from John Craven’s strange older brother.

The main reason Screamholics should be clicking below is that the people at MakingOf.com always do a fine job and Craven is at his most interesting when talking about his motives for making these films. Newcomers Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere talk about their roles and it’s easy to forget that they were probably still in nappies when the first Scream film came about.

Anyhoo – Scream 4 is coming. Nothing can stop it. Here’s a little peek at how and why they made it.

Emma Roberts (It’s Kind of a Funny Story) is attached to star in coming-of-age drama Adult World.

The film, to be directed by Scott Coffey (Ellie Parker), centers on a Stanford grad (Roberts) with dreams of becoming a poet who gets stuck working in a mom-and-pop bookstore.

According to sources, offers are out for a male counterpart as well as an older character but, as of yet, no one has been officially cast.

Roberts will next be seen in the slasher sequel Scream 4, alongside Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette.

The poster for the first Scream movie had its cast lined up like lambs to the slaughter, and so popular was this design that it was copied by many of the films influenced by Wes Craven’s slasher, so it’s nice to see this new Mexican poster goes back to basics and gives us the familiar design

Even before the film was announced there were fan made posters for Scream 4 plastered upon the walls of the internet, mostly based around the spooky visage of Ghostface.

It’s certainly an iconic image and the marketing team behind Wes Craven’s latest entry in the horrorshow series clearly think so and have released a new poster and it’s pretty neat.

Though, as the tagline has it, it’s a new decade we’ve still yet to see how new this new film will be. Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette return to welcome new Scream alum Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Adam Brody, Anthony Anderson and Alison Brie.Who will last to the end credits is anyone’s guess. I still reckon Neve Campbell will be in the Drew Barrymore role this time round.

The Weinstein Company have a forth instalment of their enormously popular horror franchise Scream on the way, so why not return to the spoof spin-off that has made them a another bucketload of cash too!

For those out there who already bemoan the lack of originality in Tinseltown, and are less than excited at the prospect of Scream 4 heading to the multiplexes soon, an announcement has cropped up on Facebook (and reported by ComingSoon) that the brothers Weinstein are planning a Scary Movie 5.

Oh geez! That series of films may have made a very healthy profit for the company in the past (a whooping $800 million worldwide in fact), but this really does smack of creative bankruptcy. Even Scream 4 feels like a completely unnecessary venture, so the idea of returning to its half-assed parody once again is just depressing.

Hasn’t the success of their big Oscar hope The King’s Speech been enough of a tell-tale sign that there is a big audience out there who are hungry for original, quality product?

New Scream 4 picture time, and it’s no surprise that newcomer to the series Emma Roberts shares a few dicey moments with Ghostface, who returns with Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette to torment and tear up the latest gaggle of teens in the fourth Scream movie.

My hope is that the twist will reveal that the  man behind the mask is Craven himself and this is some kind of New Nightmare for the twenty-first century. Any chance of that? Not really, but an effective horror film, no matter how Scooby Doo it is, will always find an audience, so hopefully there’s enough spark and wit in this one to fill the next two films in the proposed trilogy.
