Also in negotiations is Natalie Martinez, who would play the role of Michael Peña’s wife.

End of Watch has been written and is to be directed by David Ayer, who wrote the Academy Award-winning Training Day and co-wrote The Fast and the Furious’ screenplay, and who has shown with Harsh Times and Street Kings that he’s got great talent behind the camera too.

The film follows,

“The longtime partnership of two LAPD officers [Gyllenhaal and Peña] as they confront marriage, love, fatherhood and the harsh realities of the Los Angeles streets. Kendrick and Martinez will play the officers’ love interest.”

Kendrick, last seen in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World as Michael Cera’s sister, is a rising star also to be seen in 2009’s Oscar-nominated Up in the Air, and a role like this is definitely something to look forward to from her. I’m a big fan of Gyllenhaal’s too, and I think they’d make a great on-screen couple, which is a necessity in a film in which the cops’ home lives play an important role too.

Fans of the Twilight saga can look forward to seeing Kendrick return as Jessica Stanley in Breaking Dawn – Part 1 in November this year. And she’ll also be starring opposite Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, and Bryce Dallas Howard in 50/50, which is due out on the same day as Breaking Dawn, so with some great films lined up for herself, we can hopefully expect to see more and more of Kendrick as her popularity rises.

Filming on End of Watch is expected to begin over the summer, and I’m already excited about the finished product. Ayer is exceptionally talented, and if it’s released next year, it will be the first film he’s directed in four years, and the first he’s written in seven, so I can’t wait to see what he’s been working on in his absence.

Ain’t It Cool News had an interview with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, and in it, the subject of their final film in the Blood and Ice Cream / Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy, provisionally titled The World’s End, came up.

According to Pegg, he and Wright will be starting work on writing the final film very soon, and he hopes to get a first draft done before filming starts on the sequel to 2009’s Star Trek.

The collaboration of Pegg, Frost, and Wright has given British film and TV some of its best and funniest work in recent years, and fans will be pleased to know that work is set to start soon on the final film in the trilogy, following up 2004’s Shaun of the Dead and 2007’s Hot Fuzz.

In the interview, Pegg said of the expectation that will inherently be attached to the project:

“I hope we sort of confound it in a way. I wouldn’t want to become predictable or be the guys who do that. The next thing that we do will hopefully be… you know, in writing our new thing, Edgar and me have been very determined – that we’re going to start in earnest very, very soon – to not just do the same thing again, to do something very different. Not to the point of alienating people who want something, but just give people something new and something different. You can’t just stay where you are forever. You have to mutate to survive, and I think we’re going to make sure that we do that. I’d hate to become stale and predictable. People are already making films that are kind of like the sort of thing we might do. I want to stay a little bit ahead of the curve at least.”

When asked exactly how soon he hopes to begin writing, he responded,

“We already started the conception process, so it’s just a question of when we can get together. I’m just about to start shooting a movie here in the UK, so maybe between that and Star Trek we might get a chance to bang out a first draft if we’re lucky.”

The three of them have worked together since 1999 when they made the immensely entertaining TV show Spaced, which Pegg co-wrote with Jessica Hynes (who was also in Shaun of the Dead), and Wright directed.

Wright most recently directed last year’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which somewhat surprisingly didn’t do very well at the box office, despite being very popular among critics and fans alike. He’s since worked as a co-writer on the upcoming The Adventures of Tin Tin: Secret of the Unicorn, which Pegg and Frost both star in.

We could be a year or two from getting to see their final film in the trilogy, but we all know that it will be well worth the wait, especially with Pegg and Wright’s determination to re-invent the wheel on their last outing. You just know it’s going to be something special.

The film will be the English language debut of Chilean writer/director Sebastián Silva, who wrote and directed 2009’s Golden Globe Award-winning film, The Maid (La Nana).

Magic, Magic has at its centre a young woman on holiday with her friends in remote part of Chile, and she slowly starts to lose her mind. Though she tries to get her friends to realise what’s happening, they ignore her until it is too late.

At the moment, the search is still ongoing for the actress to play the young woman. Perhaps with Cera now on board, an actress of both similar fame and calibre will be more enticed to join. Silva also won the World Cinema Jury Prize for Drama with The Maid at Sundance, so his talent as both writer and director seems confirmed already. Personally, I think Emma Stone would be perfect for the role. She and Cera starred in Superbad, so we know that they work well together, and Stone has truly been going from strength to strength over the past few years. The only thing that could be an issue is that she is already very much in demand, currently filming The Amazing Spider-Man, and depending on what roles she’s looking to take on next, she could be hard to schedule.

Cera, on the other hand, has been relatively quiet of late. He of course had the lead role in last year’s Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, which has gained somewhat notoriety for not doing as well as expected at the box office, falling short by about $15m of its budget, a figure that I hope it will make up with its DVD and Blu-Ray sales.

Scott Pilgrim was incredibly well received by critics, and its unsuccessful performance came as a real surprise, because I don’t think it had anything to do with the quality of the film; some films just don’t do well at the box office. Having worked pretty solidly since about the age of 10, Cera (now 22) was certainly due a bit of a break.

Coming back to work with Magic, Magic sounds like it will be quite a bit of a change from what he’s done in the past though, so it will be interesting to see what he’s like in a more serious role. I’m hoping that before we see him in Magic, Magic, we’ll be seeing him return to his role as George-Michael Bluth in the upcoming (and very much long awaited and highly anticipated) Arrested Development movie. Nothing is set in stone yet, but creator Mitchell Hurwitz talked to Digital Spy back in February and said that he’s sincere in his hopes for shooting it this year, so I remain optimistic that things are progressing well.

After the hilarious and hugely well-regarded one-two of Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, Edgar Wright tried his hand at a fully-fledged Hollywood production with Scott Pilgrim vs The World. Although the film was very well received by critics and much loved by most who went to see it, it met with less than stellar commercial success, garnering a little over half of its estimated budget at the US box office.

Notwithstanding that, Wright is returning to his work on the screenplay for Ant-Man, a lesser profile Marvel property, which he has apparently been looking at since 2006. Wright is tentatively linked to scripting and directing duties on the film, but progress is glacial to say the least. Wright is working with Joe Cornish (Attack the Block, The Adventures of Tintin) on the script and now that he has finished his Scott Pilgrim promotional duties around the globe, he is said to be looking at it more intently than he had been of late.

Aside from trying to find time for scripting the film, Wright and Cornish have to try to work out how to write a story about a superhero who shrinks to the size of an ant to solve crimes. Although giving the script a strongly humourous bent seems like a given, tonally it could prove to be a tough nut to crack. Should it play primarily for younger audiences, or be arch and knowing and bring a smile to the faces of older viewers. It is understandable that it is taking Wright a bit of time to progress this one.

In the meantime, Wright is still chewing over ideas for a third big screen collaboration with Simon Pegg, presumably to complete their Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy. Wright says that they have an idea and need to sit down and write something, but with Pegg travelling the world on Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol and due to follow that with Star Trek 2, perhaps Wright should concentrate on Ant-Man for the time being.

A Psychology student by day and an usher by night, I had built up an encyclopaedic knowledge of film over three years of part time work, ever broadening my horizons with a determination to watch anything and everything I could. Finally blessed with an outlet for my burgeoning opinions and limitless enthusiasm, HeyUGuys has offered me opportunity after opportunity resulting in an inordinate number of cinematic highlights this 2010.

With Hollywood finally dropping the tiresome “darker is better” mantra to provide two of the very best comic-book adaptations to date – Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, in case it needed pointing out – and DreamWorks raising the bar with a series of above studio-par animated releases, it has been a year of many memorable moments. Inception was mind-bending, Four Lions was ground-breaking and The Crazies showed that not all horror remakes had to be rubbish. Shrek got good again, Joe Dante finally returned to comedy-horror with The Hole 3D and Ron Weasley got to step up to the plate and destroy a Horcrux. From Monsters to My Name is Khan, Piranha to Paranormal Activity 2 and Buried to Burlesque, this year has been full of stand-out cinema, whatever your tastes.

From home I have reviewed Eat Pray Love (OK), Streetdance 3D (better) and A Town Called Panic (best), I have been equal parts shocked and delighted by movie news, I have revisited Alien vs. Predator for a commemorative Video Vault and have each week found something new to recommend or ridicule as I work to develop my understanding and opinions of the film industry in general.

Not all high points took place onscreen, however, with a sojourn to London this November affording me the opportunity to get behind the scenes and out from behind the counter. Eager to sample the capital’s infectious film culture after months of relative isolation across Aberdeen and Edinburgh, I attended press screenings, visited sets and shared oxygen with actors. I met Noomi Rapace following a screening of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo when she took to the stage for an audience Q&A, I held a scorpion in the foyer of Empire Leicester Square prior to a screening of Disney’s Tangled and had the chance to visit Warner Brothers’ London headquarters to view one of their upcoming releases.

Outside of the auditorium, and London itself for that matter, I had the chance to visit the set of Best Laid Plans, an upcoming feature from David Blair that is attracting somewhat of a buzz in anticipation of its 2011 release. Arriving on set in Nottingham, I interviewed the film’s writer and star in addition to director Blair. Stephen Graham, fresh from shooting Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, spoke at length about his back catalogue, his hopes for the future and the recent student protests – proving almost as otherworldly as he did completely grounded.

However inspiring the above proved, the sentimentalist inside me cannot help but note another occurrence as the true stand-out of the year. Even better than the news that Ridley Scott is planning a return to his Alien franchise, outshining the chance to write news, reviews and features for the web, surpassing the return of Road Runner and Coyote to the big screen and trumping even the final act of How To Train Your Dragon was the opportunity to meet the rest of the HeyUGuys team. For months I had followed them on twitter, read and admired their articles and it was a pleasure to finally meet a collection of the nicest and most enthusiastic like-minded movie-lovers in a small pub in London. Forgive the sentiment, but it really was the highlight of my year.

It really has been a great year for cinema, 2010 teasing the awesome potential for the new decade it has inevitably started. With Scream 4 on the way, the end of the Twilight saga in sight and Marmaduke mercifully behind us, the scene is set for a truly amazing new year.

There’s some interesting reveals here, alongside more predictable topics (Justin Bieber’s tragic number one position in the People section speaks volumes about the largest demographic to use the site).

The Film section almost mirrors a top ten box office list of the year, with one exception. Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (No. 3) only managed to gross a little over its estimated $60 million budget at the domestic box office ($31,494,270).

Maybe massive exposure on Twitter isn’t enough to guarantee box office success as yet, but the grassroots approach Pilgrim’s director Edgar Wright adopted to spread the word and keep his fervent fanbase in the loop, could only have been achieved by social networking of this kind.

One thing can be certain from the Film list though. The Last Airbender’s inclusion in 6th place isn’t due to cinemagoers raving about their experience after seeing the film.

Scott Pilgrim stars Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Bill Hader and Brie Larson who we get to see in this new clip. Larson plays Envy Adams in fictious band, Clash at Demonhead in the movie and whether she’s actually singing in this clip or not is debatable but nonetheless, she’s looking good singing a song which is titled Black Sheep by Metric. It is interspliced with the graphic novel characters (the evil exes) on which the movie is based.

Check out the clip below and click here to pre-order the DVD and Blu-ray and keep your eyes peeled for a rather exciting competition to win tickets to a screening where Edgar Wright will be in attendance to answer some questions.

The movie came out a few months ago in cinemas and is released on DVD and Blu-ray, 27th December (why after Christmas?!).

The movie featured a top notch cast consisting of Michael Cera, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Kieran Culkin, Chris Evans, Anna Kendrick, Alison Pill and Brandon Routh. Scot Pilgrim was effects heavy with a lot of work needing to be done in post production. In these new featurettes, we get to see how the comic was brought into life, then how the characters followed and then how some of the stunts were completed:

Unfortunately, the film may have disappeared a little too early from both the US and our cinema screens but it still lives on (and will keep doing so) through the likes of special screenings and fan retrospectives.

Below is an alternative promotional poster which UK-based artist Sam Gilbey has designed for the film’s upcoming shows (which Edgar Wright is scheduled to attend and plugged on his blog) at LA’s revival movie theatre, the New Beverly Cinema.

This is a fantastic design and it’s really up there with the original cinema quads in terms of capturing the essence of the film. There are also four close-up images of the characters from the poster below the main image.

The new George Clooney vehicle The American has taken the top spot at the US box office this weekend with a total of $16m in revenue, while Robert Rodriguez’s “mexploitation” actioner Machete is in third place, having managed to bring in just over $11m.

Both of these figures are relatively small but as the summer season is over, the large popcorn audience are probably a bit fatigued, plus it’s usually the time of year that Hollywood roll out the smaller films.

Clooney’s film fits more into the arthouse slot (it’s a slow, moody piece from the director of the Joy Division biopic Control) so it’s understandable why it didn’t make the same figures as the “Ocean” films did on their debuts, but it would have been nice to see Machete open a little better.

Similar to the low box office for Scott Pilgrim v.s The World a couple of weeks back, the problem here appears to be that the niche market which is being catered for isn’t quite large enough to really bring in the big figures, but I’m sure it’s a film (like Pilgrim) which will find a huge audience on it’s DVD release.

Pretty much all of the cast were in attendance including Michael Cera, Kieran Culkin, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Chris Evans, Bill Hader, Satya Bhabba, Brandon Routh and Anna Kendrick who we discovered reads HeyUGuys on an hourly basis! Check out the video if you don’t believe me! We also got to talk with Jessica Hynes who talks about Burke and Hare and working with the great John Landis!

Ben (@Montimer) and I (@DaveSzt were there and we also got to chat with Brie Larson who I’m pretty sure could end up in my top 10 of nicest people on the planet. She was so great with the crowd of fans, spent time with everyone and was extremely pleasant with us. Also making an appearance this evening was Macauley Culkin but he was whisked into the cinema quicker than you can say Home Alone!

We got to chat with many of the names above but unfortunately didn’t manage to get any time with Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera) himself, but he did work the crown aplenty which is always nice to see. We spoke to Edgar Wright who was joined by his buddie, Simon Pegg. Chris Evans was there too but again, we didn’t get to grab him which was a shame but all you need to know for now is right here on my Captain America: The First Avenger set visit!

Synopsis: Meet charming and jobless Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera). A bass guitarist for garage band Sex Bob—omb, the 22—year—old has just met the girl of his dreams…literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. Genre—smashing filmmaker Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) tells the amazing story of one romantic slacker’s quest to power up with love in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. Scott Pilgrim has never had a problem getting a girlfriend. It’s getting rid of them that proves difficult. From the girl who kicked his heart’s ass—and now is back in town—to the teenage distraction he’s trying to shake when Ramona rollerblades into his world, love hasn’t been easy. He soon discovers, however, his new crush has the most unusual baggage of all: a nefarious league of exes controls her love life and will do whatever it takes to eliminate him as a suitor. As Scott gets closer to Ramona, he must face an increasingly vicious rogues’ gallery from her past—from infamous skateboarders to vegan rock stars and fearsome identical twins. And if he hopes to win his true love, he must vanquish them all before it really is game over.

Anna Kendrick confesses her love for HeyUGuys!

The World tonight there’s never been a better time to delve deeper into this film, and there’s a nice behind the scenes video which has just been released.

Focusing on the sound design this video from Soundworks Collection (via Collider) intersperses the widely seen trailer footage with some decent behind the scenes shots, and having seen the film last week (you can read our review here) there’s much to enjoy from Edgar Wright’s film and the richness of detail is evident in this video, as is the dedication of the cast and crew.

Here’s the video, there’ll be pictures and interviews from the premiere tonight so check back for those, and then – go and see the film!

The man’s name is Satya Bhabba, he is the first Evil Ex to face Scott Pilgrim, and he has signed on to play the lead character in the long awaited adaptation of Salman Rushdie’s Midnight’s Children.

Rushdie’s 1981 novel won the Booker of Bookers award in 1993 and is a masterpiece of magic realist writing, telling the story of the lives of two babies born within the first hour of India’s independence from Great Britain and the powers they and the other nine hundred and ninety eight babies, who make up Midnight’s Children, share.

Rushdie’s own adaptation of his book was almost made thirteen years ago, into a five part mini series for the BBC, when a problem with the Sri Lankan government burst the production bubble. An adaptation for the theatre, in partnership with the RSC, happened a few years later, whose success Rusdhie commented on,

Speaking as the author of the adaptation as well as the novel, I liked these differences. I thought of the play as a sort of second cousin of the book – perhaps its illegitimate child; its relative, not its mirror-image, and I thought its brasher, more aggressively in-your-face style was powerful and effective and properly theatrical, while remaining true to the book’s spirit.

The response from audiences was interestingly divided. It soon became clear that the people who most enjoyed the show were those who had not read the novel.

This quote comes from a longer article written for The Guardian newspaper last year, which you can find here, on the process of adaptation and one feels that the time has finally come to bring his seminal work to the big screen. I saw the theatre adaptation in London some years back and enjoyed it very much, and the book is incredibly dear to me, so I’m hoping the sense of fire and colour, the cartoonish corruption and fierce wit are as present in the film version.

Speaking with The Playlist Bhabba said,

I play Saleem [Sinai] in that. I’m learning a little Hindhi and I’ll have magical powers in the film as well, it’s a theme,

He will be working with Rushdie and director Deepa Mehta on the film, which, it is hoped, will roll before the cameras later this year.

Ryan Murphy’s romantic comedy, featuring Julia Roberts and Javier Bardem, landed in second place with a solid $27.7M, while the buddy action-thriller The Other Guys slipped down to third, taking roughly $18M.

Christopher Nolan’s psychological thriller held strong at fourth place, taking $11.4M, benefiting from positive word-of-mouth and repeated viewings. Edgar Wright’s long-awaited, and highly anticipated, Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World landed at fifth, opening to an extremely disappointing $10.5. Perhaps making it one of the year’s most anticipated failures?

Rounding off the top ten were Despicable Me ($6.7M), Step Up 3D ($6.6M), Salt ($6.4), Dinner For Schmucks ($6.3) and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore ($4M).

Figures provided by BoxOfficeMojo.

Despite his best attempts to give away as little as possible during his press jaunt for Scott Prilgim Vs. The World, Edgar Wright has nevertheless spilled an interesting nugget of information regarding his take on the upcoming Ant-Man film.

Talking to Vanity Fair, Wright revealed that he will be approaching the material as “essentially a high-tech spy heist film with somebody with a very particular power.”

Accepting the challenges he faces, and the difficulties associated with ‘shrinking man’ material, the director added, “I know there’s a big stigma attached to it, mostly because every movie about shrinking has been about people in peril. I think it’d be great to do a shrinking film about a bad-ass secret agent.” It’s certainly nice to know that we’re not looking at Honey I Shrunk The Superhero.

While this is indeed an exciting possibility, there are still a few weeks until Wright will be free from his Pilgrim duties and another draft of the script still has to be written. As such, it might be a little premature to rule out other possibilities. Taking into account what happened to Edward Norton, Marvel still have an awfully long time to change their choice of director.
