We’ve had our fair share of set pics from the set of Gemma Arterton’s new movie, Byzantium and here’s a few more. The difference with these ones however is that she’s covered in blood! The images were taken in Ireland where they’re currently filming instead of the southern shored of England were they were in the previous images of the former Bond Girl.

Byzantium is directed by Neil Jordan and also stars  Saoirse Ronan who plays the pretend-daughter of Gemma in the movie.

Following the first set pictures of Gemma Arterton in Neil Jordan’s horror-thriller Byzantium, a handful of images of Saoirse Ronan and Caleb Landry Jones filming their scenes in Dublin, Ireland, have now been released online too.

The film follows Arterton and Ronan as a mother-daughter vampire team who sometimes pose as sisters. Directed by directed by Neil Jordan, the script is written by Moira Buffini as an adaptation of her own stage play.

The film doesn’t have a release date yet, but here are a couple of the images, and you can also see more on ComingSoon.net.

Hanna’s teen assassin Saoirse Ronan is a busy actress at the moment. The 17-year-old is headlining both the adaptation of Twilight novelist Stephenie Meyer’s The Host and Neil Jordan’s trip back to vampiredom, Byzantium.

Variety is reporting that she’s also signed on to star in fantasy wartime drama, How I Live Now. She’ll play the lead yet again, this time in the role of a young American girl on holiday in the UK who is caught up in a terrorist attack during World War III and separated from her family, whom she struggles to be reunited with.

Based on the award-winning young adult novel by Meg Rosoff, Kevin MacDonald has signed on to direct, with Jeremy Brock (his co-scribe on The Last King of Scotland) and Terry Gilliam-regular Tony Grisoni providing the script.

Filming of Neil Jordan’s Byzantium continues on the southern coast of England and more pictures have emerged from the production.

Previously we saw Gemma Arterton in a red dress which went round the internet like the plague (but a good plague) and the images from yesterday’s filming continue the theme of beachbound shenanigans, albeit with a more bloodsucking bent.

Arterton and Saoirse Ronan lead Jordan’s film which is based on Moira Buffini’s play about a mother and daughter who are both vampires. Sam Riley, Daniel Mays and Caleb Landry Jones makes up the rest of the principal cast. Looks nuts. Can’t wait.

Here’s the first set photos from the set of Byzantium that show Gemma Arterton filming on a cold beach somewhere in the UK. We were with Gemma on Sunday night along with multitudes of other British film stars at the British Independent Film awards where she looked stunning when presenting an award. She’s maybe not looking quite as stunning in these images but she’s not doing too bad a job considering she’s probably freezing to death!

Byzantium is directed by Neil Jordan and as well as Gemma stars Saoirse Ronan in a movie where the two characters pose as mother and daughter while are in fact vampires!

Jake Abel and Max Irons have been confirmed to play the two lead roles in an adaptation of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer’s, The Host, reported FirstSource this week.

The Host is a science fiction/romance novel by Stephenie Meyer that introduces an alien race called the Souls, who take over the Earth and its inhabitants by inserting themselves into a human body. One Soul, who is fused with a woman named Melanie Stryder, becomes overwhelmed by the vividness of human memories and emotions and begins to lose control over its possession over her body. The soul, who renames herself as Wanda, chooses to seek out human contact instead of following her race’s master plan.

Abel (I Am Number Four and Percy Jackson & the Lightning Thief) signed on to play the first lead role on Wednesday (9th November). He will play the character of Ian, one of few left with control of their own mind, who fights against the Souls in an effort to save the remaining humans.

Yesterday, the second male lead of Jared was given to Max Irons (Red Riding Hood), who will play Melanie’s love interest in the story.

The film, which has been acquired for domestic distribution by Open Road, will also star Saoirse Ronan, who Abel worked alongside with in The Lovely Bones, as Melanie and will be directed by Andrew Niccol (In Time) who has already written the script.

The Host is set to be released on 29th March 2013, a few months after the final Twilight Saga film, Breaking Dawn – Part 2.

Last night, Ben and I were on the red carpet for Justin Timberlake and Amanda Seyfried’s new movie, In Time. We got to speak to the two main cast-members and their co-star Cillian Murphy all of which can be seen here. Just as we began to start thinking about packing away and heading home to edit the footage we’d collected, Hanna star Saoirse Ronan turned up to have a chat us about her new movie, The Host which is based on the book written by The Twilight Saga author, Stephanie Meyer.

The Host will be directed by Andrew Niccol who has also directed In Time hence the link with her being there. I’ve placed the interview below for your viewing pleasure. Saoirse talks about being excited to work with Andrew but was pleased that last night’s screening wasn’t Alvin and the Chipmunks! I’ve also placed the footage that our friends from Leicester Square TV collected with Saoirse which you can see below our footage.

“I just missed your heart” are the first and last words uttered in this marvellous adventure thriller by Director Joe Wright. See?…you’re interested already.

Hanna is a 16-year old killing machine played with just the right amount of wonderment and naivety by Irish actress Saoirse Ronan.

Hanna has been brought up in the wild woods of North Finland singlehandedly by her widowed Father Erik (Eric Bana) who, as an ex-CIA agent who trains her in martial arts and armed combat, transforms her into the perfect assassin. At the same time her home education all seems to come from encyclopedias and traditional fairy tales. In her secluded life this is all normal as she has never had any physical contact outside of her homeland.

Hanna knows that her training has been leading up to one moment, a moment soon approaching when she will be unleashed into the real world to exact revenge on the ‘wicked witch’ responsible for her Mother’s death.
The Witch in question is Marissa Viegler (Cate Blanchett) a ruthless CIA operative who once worked with Erik and has been obsessively searching for him and his daughter. On completion of Hanna’s mission Erik arranges to rendezvous with her in Berlin at a spooky abandoned fairy tale theme park, very Grimm (sorry). Hanna makes her way there via Morocco by hitching a lift with a new age English family in their hippy VW Dormobile. Saoirse Ronan’s acting talents really shine here as this is Hanna’s first experience with a real life family.

She may just as well be from another planet as she has no point of reference to compare them with and she exudes a child like quality but at the same time could snap your neck like a twig. The Mother and Father (Olivia Williams and Jason Flemyng) are very liberal parents but show concern that Hanna is travelling around the world on her own. Hanna strikes up a touching relationship with their daughter Sophie (Jessica Barden, last seen upstaging Gemma Arterton in Tamara Drewe) who teaches Hanna about life through her knowledge of ‘Entertainment Now’ and ‘Hello’ magazine.

The chase scenes and fight sequences are superbly choreographed with brutal realism rather than the usual overused slo-mo bullet time acrobatics. Hot on Hanna’s trail is rogue executioner Isaacs hired by Marissa through unofficial channels. Isaacs is played by English actor Tom Hollander as you’ve never seen him before, complete with bleached hair and a Nazi accent and an awful eighties fashion sense. The action is enhanced with a thumping good Chemical Brothers soundtrack as well.

It’s always good to see the versatile Eric Bana but I feel that he was slightly under used here and he almost plays the same angst ridden character straight from the film Munich. I find it amazing that Joe Wright has only ever made three other movies prior to Hanna, Pride & Prejudice (2005), nominated for 4 Oscars, Atonement (2007), winning an Oscar for best original score and The Soloist (2009). Wright also throws in a thumping good Chemical Brothers soundtrack.

Although I enjoyed the film it seemed to end all too soon and I felt that there were one or two things left unexplained. Perhaps part of the reason may have been because Universal changed the certification from the original 15 to a 12A? Having said all that I still put this down as my film of the year so far.

I give it an ‘edge of the seat’ ****~ (4/5)

Take Two.

I didn’t warm to this film at all. There was an emotional weight to Joe Wright’s work in Atonement, most of which came through from Ian McEwan’s stunning novel but there is nothing like the connection  necessary to give the film its power. What we have here is a by the numbers revenge thriller with some great performances lost in a film within a narrative that doesn’t deviate from expectations. A refusal to defy conventions shouldn’t count against the film however when it quickly becomes clear that Hanna will always escape, always find her mark it becomes a passive experience. The soundtrack is, as Mark says, is something special but I found myself becoming distracted by it, just as I did with Tron: Legacy, and the action on screen was not nearly as exciting. I’m a fan of Joe Wright’s films, his anemic Pride & Prejudice aside, but for all the technical virtuosity on display here there was nothing to keep me involved.

Caleb Landry Jones (No Country for Old Men) has landed the lead male role in Byzantium.

Jones will star opposite Saoirse Ronan (Hanna) and Gemma Arterton (The Disappearance of Alice Creed) in Neil Jordan’s fantasy-thriller.

Based on Moira Buffini’s acclaimed play, Byzantium centers on a mother and daughter vampire duo who form a deadly pact.

Byzantium will shoot in October for a late 2012 release.

Jones was last seen in X-Men: First Class and has a role in Contraband opposite Kate Beckinsale and Mark Wahlberg.

Cody Horn (Flipped) has been added to the cast of low-budget male stripper film Magic Mike.

Horn will star as the female lead alongside Channing Tatum (The Eagle), Alex Pettyfer (I am Number Four), Matthew McConaughey (The Lincoln Lawyer), Matt Bomer (Flightplan), Joe Manganiello (Spider-Man) and Riley Keough (The Runaways).

Magic Mike centers on an experienced stripper (Tatum) who teaches a younger dancer (Pettyfer) how to hustle his wares on and off stage at the exotic club Xquisite, run by Dallas (McConaughey).

Steven Soderbergh (Traffic) is attached to direct, with filming scheduled to begin next month.

Horn will next be seen in Geoffrey Fletcher’s Violet & Diary opposite Saoirse Ronan, Alexis Bledel and Danny Trejo.

Those lovely chaps over at Twitch Film have the new U.K. trailer for Studio Ghibli’s Arrietty, as dubbed by Saoirse Ronan, Mark Strong and Tom Holland.

Arrietty – which HeyUGuys caught at last month’s Edinburgh Film Festival- adapts Mary Norton’s novel, The Borrowers, for the big screen, complete with the studio’s trademark visual flare.

The film follows the the Clock family and their anonymous life under the floor and inside the walls of a house owned by humans. When Arrietty is discovered by a visiting boy named Sho, however, the family’s quiet existence is put in jeoprady and their lives in danger by the decidedly less hospitable maid.

Don’t miss Arrietty when it eventually arrives in U.K. cinemas. Your eyes have earned it.

Open Road Films have committed to U.S. distribution of the latest Stephanie Meyer book-to-film sci-fi thriller, The Host, and given us a release date of March 29th, 2013.

The Host, set in a time where Earth has been invaded and a majority of our bodies have been taken over by an alien race of “souls”, follows one soul named Wanderer, as she attempts to use her recently inhabited human body to locate the small band of uninhabited humans left. What Wanderer does not anticipate is that Melanie Stryder isn’t ready to give up her body without a fight.

Written and directed by Andrew Niccol (Lord of War, Gattaca) with the only confirmed actress being the ever-impressive Saoirse Ronan (The Lovely Bones, Hanna) starring as Melanie Stryder, The Host is shaping up to be a highly anticipated film.

For those of you who have had the chance to pick this book up this will comes as great news as this story made way more of an impression on me than Twilight series. If you haven’t taken the time to give it a read yet, give it a chance if you’re into that sort of thing. We’ll keep you posted as the details of the film continue to unfold!

It seems that everywhere you look these days, some studio or publishing company is trying to cash in on the vampire craze that has been steadily sweeping the world for the last few years.  It’s gotten so bad that even long time vamp fans such as myself are ready to see our fanged friends placed on the shelf for a decade or so.  However there is a glimmer of hope on the horizon!

This past week at Cannes, it was announced that writer Moira Buffini’s adaptation of her own stageplay Byzantium is no longer stuck in development limbo! The story itself revolves around two women who mysteriously appear in a small British town.  When Eleanor, the youngest of the two, lets slip that she believes herself and her counterpart Claire to be 200 year old vampires, the townsfolk are quick to dismiss her. But a dark shadow has become cast over the town and people are starting to disappear, leaving some to wonder if there might be some truth to the girl’s claims.

Number 9 films has gone on to reveal the film’s producer, Stephen Woolley, as well as it’s director, Neil Jordan.  These two are no strangers to the vampire genre as they are the same duo that stunned audiences, with their big screen interpretation of Anne Rice’s Interview with the Vampire.  The film’s two stars have also been announced with Disappearance of Alice Creed‘s Gemma Arterton, and Hanna‘s Saoirse Ronan playing the film’s two leading ladies.

When it comes to film adaptations, Ronan is one of the best.  She has already delivered fabulous performances in Atonement, The Lovely Bones, City of Ember, and The Way Back.  She’s even supposedly slated for Peter Jackson’s Hobbit epic as well as Andrew Niccol’s adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s The Host (although I’m still miffed that she wasn’t chosen for the role of Katniss in The Hunger Games!). With that kind of track record, it seems studios can’t go wrong in casting her.

Together this combination of cast and crew appears to be the perfect storm needed to bring credibility back to the vampire genre.  All the right pieces seem to be in place, but we won’t really know how well the project will truly turn out until the film itself is in the can.

Andrew Niccol is set to both write and direct the film adaptation of Stephenie Meyer’s The Host, with Saoirse Ronan to play the lead character, THR reports. Meyer’s original novel was published in 2008, and she’s spoken of developing it into a trilogy, so if Niccol’s film does well (and with the success of Twilight, it’s got something of a guaranteed fandom already), we could well see Ronan in a major film franchise like Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson.

The film is set in a world where an alien race, the Souls, have taken the Earth and erased the minds of the people they occupy. The Host will see Ronan cast as Melanie Stryder, a human fused with an alien ‘soul’, Wanderer, who is unable to fully take over Melanie’s body.

Niccol, who has already written the script, is no stranger to the creation of new worlds. He wrote and directed Gattaca, one of my all-time favourite sci-fi films, so creatively bringing to life that futuristic world as to make it feel real. He also penned The Truman Show, which of course is not set in a far-off world, but rather created a world within the world of the film. And he is currently working on a sci-fi thriller, Now, in which the ageing gene has been switched off, due out on 4th November this year. His experience seems to fit The Host perfectly, and though there will undoubtedly be high expectations given the success of the Twilight adaptations (the last two parts of which are due out at the end of this year and next), I fully anticipate Niccol rising to the challenge.

In much the same way, Ronan looks to be an excellent casting choice for the role of Mel. At just 17 years of age, she has already had major roles in Atonement, The Lovely Bones, and Hanna, which is in cinemas now, which have earned her a Golden Globe nomination, two BAFTA nominations, and an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

With Breaking Dawn: Part I due out on 18th November this year, and Part II due out in November next year, we could see this Meyer adaptation fall somewhere in between the two. According to Inferno Entertainment’s president of international sales, Kimberly Fox,

“We literally began sales this week, and the response from the international community and from domestic buyers has been beyond our highest expectations.”

Given the first three Twilight films have grossed more than $1.7 billion, off a combined budget of $155 million, it’s not surprising that there’s been a big response already to the upcoming project, especially if you factor into the equation Meyer’s hopes to continue the novel into a trilogy. Like Twilight, The Host has an element of romance to it, so we can expect to see the next Robert Pattinson cast opposite Ronan before long.

Our US reporter, Daniel Waller recently caught up with Saoirse Ronan and director Joe Wright for their new Universal Pictures’ film, Hanna which hits UK cinemas this Friday 6th May.
