Alec Baldwin was already set to the Rome based film, about which nothing (naturally) is known except that Allen has enlisted his Oscar winning Vicki Christina Barcelona star Penelope Cruz to star.

Eisenberg is a seemingly obivous fit for Allen’s work, while Baldwin worked with the director twenty one years ago in Alice with Mia Farrow, Page is another actress whose star is on the rise and has never yet been anything less than charming in every film I’ve seen her in.

Another film, another great cast – let’s hope this one continues Allen’s resurgence after Match Point and VCB. His latest, Midnight in Paris, opens Cannes next month.

Synopsis:

AD 117. The Roman Empire stretches from Egypt to Spain, and East as far as the Black Sea. But in northern Britain, the relentless onslaught of conquest has ground to a halt in face of the guerrilla tactics of an elusive enemy: the savage and terrifying tribes known as the Picts.

Quintus, sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, marches north with General Virilus’ legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from the face of the earth and destroy their leader Gorlacon.

But when the legion is ambushed on unfamiliar ground, and Virilus taken captive, Quintus faces a desperate struggle to keep his small platoon alive behind enemy lines, evading remorseless Pict pursuers over harsh terrain, as the band of soldiers race to rescue their General, and to reach the safety of the Roman frontier.

Got some conflicting news reported this morning from Entertainment Weekly who have caught up with Rome creator Bruno Heller. During an interview with the man who brought us one of the best TV series of all time that is Rome, he said that

“The movie, which picks up in Germany four years after the series ended.”

The reason I say conflicting information is that I interviews Kevin McKidd a few weeks ago during the press junket for Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief and he said he’s read the script and that it was going to be a stand alone version that wouldn’t actually follow the TV series. You can listen to my interview here. I’ve just listened back to the interview and he states “he’s read the first draft” so I guess things may well have moved on.

Spoiler ahead!

The problem I have with it is that if they want to get Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) back they’re going to have to resurrect him as he died at the end of the second season.

I guess more info as we get it.

Earlier this week, I got to interview Kevin McKidd for his role as Poseidon in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. At the interview, I asked him what was going on with Rome the movie as it’s most definitely something that we’d like to see.

When I quizzed him on the status of the movie he said:

“Bruno Heller is really busy with The Mentalist at the moment. He’s written the draft and it’s really good but he’s working hard finding time to finish the script. He’s a control freak and although he writing staff have carried on with it, he needs to polish it off and complete it. It (a movie) would be this hiatus which looks unlikely timing wise or next hiatus hopefully.”

When I asked if it would follow the TV series McKidd said:

“It would be a stand alone movie that would satisfy the fans of the show but also be a stand alone event film that can be watched by anyone.”

This is great news that Rome is still in the pipeline somewhere as it was such a great show and I would simply love to see it on the big screen. The original series series of 12 episodes cost $100 million with HBO paying $85m and the BBC paying the additional $15m. With effective film budget, they made an amazingly accurate, beautiful series which with immaculate attention to detail. The set was built in Italy and was the biggest ever made for a TV series and covered 5 acres!

This information ties in nicely with the interview that Ray Stephenson gave with MovieWeb nearly a year ago. Glad to hear it’s still being though about but it would be nicer if we could have a finished script so that the project could get some movement.

Staring just Sam Rockwell and the voice of Kevin Spacey as a robot who are based on the moon mining on a three year contract, when the contract is almost up and Sam is ready to return home to his family strange things start to happen. It’s amazingly made by Duncan Jones and Sam Rockwell puts in a performance worthy of an Oscar that is long overdue. A future classic
The series has grown from strength to strength and has produced some of the most incredible episodes of TV ever made.
If you haven’t seen it at all and were put off by Hugh Laurie’s American accent, don’t be it’s actually suits him by the time you get into season one, so buy it now, if you have seen it and don’t have season five buy it now! It’s TV at it’s best.
I was slow getting on board to this series as i thought ‘What have they done to my beloved 80′s Battlestar’ and i shouldn’t have worried. Battlestar Galactica remake is one of the most incredible TV shows ever made. The first three seasons are incredible with some episodes that truly amaze with it’s creativity, shock and awe stories and production values. The plot is similar to the original but it’s been turned on it’s head with the Cylon’s now taking on human forms which are unknown to the survivors of the war and this add’s an incredible sense of paranoia and fear to the characters of Battlestar Galactica. The actors take time to grow into their roles but by the end of season 1 they are in full flow and when season 2 kicks off it launches into it’s own and takes its position as one of the best ever shows and well worth forking out for someone you love (hint to my wife).
A lot.

In an interview with the New York Post’s Popwrap column McKidd talked about the script, saying “There is a script that is being shopped and it’s supposedly very good, I haven’t seen it, but I am definitely going to be a part of the movie“.

A day later he gave a bit more information during an interview with TV Guide.

“It’s happening. Bruno Heller, who’s now the creator of The Mentalist, has been talking to me about this idea of a movie. Sure enough, Bruno has finished the first draft, some people in the business have read it. He’s doing his rewrite now. The hope is that we’re going to try to raise the money and shoot it in the hiatus between Season 6 and Season 7 of Grey’s“.

As much as we hope that the film actually goes into production, we’re not holding our breath just yet. Despite the critical accolades for the series HBO and the BBC, co-producers on the series, decided to pull the plug after two seasons, reputedly due to the massive cost of filming each episode. Presumably any film would be hugely expensive, possibly prohibitively so, especially given the mediocre track record of TV spin-offs at the box office.

The other issue that the production will have to contend with is whether the script is suitably cinematic.

On the small screen Rome was able to balance political intrigue with small scale action perfectly. While it never had the budget to show the larger battles in a satisfactory fashion, the street fights and tavern brawls it featured were a perfect counterpoint to the simmering tensions present in the series. It’s unlikely that this limited action would carry a film.

Worse still for the production, the period of history immediately after the defeat of RomeMarc Anthony (the point at which the series ended) was relatively peaceful, with Augustus consolidating power, but nothing on the scale of the battles the second series touched upon.

Bruno Heller previously talked about using the “rise of the messiah in Palestine“ as a backdrop. The problem with this is that by the time Jesus started making trouble for the Romans, Augustus was long dead. Even if the film were to deal with the birth of the historical figure of Jesus it would still be set fourteen years after the end of the series.

We have contacted HBO and the BBC to try to get more details on the project. We’ll let you know what they’re saying as soon as they get back to us.

I’ve just heard the most amazing news. ‘Rome’, the HBO / BBC TV series that hit our screens a couple of years ago IS coming to the big screen!!

If you’ve never seen Rome, then you are missing out. I might write another review of it if I get a chance. Along with Band of Brothers, it is the best (and most expensive) TV series ever made and was made by both the BBC in the UK and HBO in the US. The only reason it was stopped was due to the money it cost to produce. Only 2 seasons were made…. but more may come!

The series of 12 episodes cost $100 million with HBO paying $85m and the BBC paying the additional $15m. With effective film budget, they made an amazingly accurate, beautififul series which with immaculate attention to detail. The set was built in Italy and was the biggest ever made for a TV series and covered 5 acres! The crew was a staggering 350 but they sure did a good job. No wonder the studio want to make the most of what they have – as I assume the back-lot still exists? Anyone know the answer to that one?

MovieWeb.com has an interview with Ray Stevenson who played Titus Pullo in the TV series of Rome and they talk to him now…

Click here to read what he said….

“While talking with actor Ray Stevenson about the upcoming Punisher: War ZoneRome movie, which is based on the popular HBO series of the same name. The film is definitely happening, and is in the process of being written at this very moment. Here is what Ray had to say about it:

Is the Rome movie still moving ahead?

Ray Stevenson: Apparently so. It is no longer a smoke and mirrors rumor. The script is in full development. As you are probably aware, this is a pretty strange process. We could go into production in a year, or it could be as quick as six months. Who knows? It will happen. At least it is no longer a rumor. From what I have heard, they are nearing the end of script development. We shall see. We shall see.

How excited are you to go back and play Titus all over again.

Ray Stevenson: I can’t wait to dust off the cobwebs of old Pullo. The guy is going to come in with a high body count. I love Pullo. I love him to pieces. I had such a great time playing him. And I got to do it in Italy and Rome. He is very special to me. He is a very special part of my history. I was very blessed to get that part.

Do you think the movie will go even further than the TV series. I mean, you were able to get away with quite a bit on HBO. Will it be more of a brutal experience? Or do you think it will be more drama based?

Ray Stevenson: That is a very interesting question. You have to ask Bruno Heller. Bruno is the one writing the movie, thankfully. I don’t think anybody else could write the movie. It will be Bruno at the helm. That guy has a soft spot for Pullo and Vorenus. I don’t think he will let the ball drop. I don’t think he will disappoint. He never pulled his punches with the hard drama or the social status, or the action sequences. He put full honesty into the characters. I completely trust him, and I can’t wait to read his script once it materializes. DVD release, we got him to talk more about the impending ”

They go on to talk about the release date is looking like 2010. The sooner the better. It is SO good! And it’s not a remake! Yippee!!
