After seeing the movie back in the cinema last year, it because a new cinema highlight for me. BUT what if the most famous time-traveling movie ever (if you disagree with what please tell me in the comments below) was to head to Broadway in a new form?!

Well, this evening, Deadline have announced that the movie could be going to Broadway with some information that the film’s Writer / Director, Robert Zemeckis is in talks with his co-writer, Bob Gale and the man responsible for the awesome score, Alan Silvestri to transition the movie to the New York stage!

For those of you who don’t know, Back to the Future sees Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and his good friend, Doctor Emmet Brown (Christopher Lloyd) traveling through time in their car of choice from the time, the DeLorean. If you’ve never seen the movie, click here and buy it!

I now have to plan a trip to New York when this opens and hearing Johnny Be Good live on stage will be too good not to see!

More as we get it but please let us know what you think of this rather interesting and unexpected news! I’m just off to book some tickets to New York for next year!

What do you think of the news? Good idea? Bad idea? Tell us in the comments section below.

The 1994 Robert Zemeckis film has to be in my top 10 all-time favourite movies and I simply love this new poster that Dave has made. It basically shows Forrest (played by Tom Hanks in the movie) in many of the situations that he finds himself in during the film using the letter ‘F’ from being a fisherman, a famous celebrity and a fruit company shareholder!

This poster is available to purchase on Dave’s website but you can click it below to enlarge.

Hugh Jackman jumps back on to our big screens tomorrow with plenty of metal, but no claws in sight, for his latest flick, Real Steel.

Real Steel is inspired by a short story by Richard ‘I am Legend’ Matheson about a down and out boxer named Charlie Kenton, played in the film by Hugh Jackman. The tale is set in the not too distant future where Kenton has had to face up to the reality that robot boxing matches are the new mega draw and not man-to-man matches. He’s a bit of a rogue who has hit a sleazy down patch and the relationship with estranged son (Dakota Goyo) is also at a low point.

As the story progresses we find out that after the pair discover a discarded sparring robot called ‘Atom’, train it up to dish out some effective metal crunching techniques, and in one scene to actually dance, that their relationship is set to improve tremendously. The whole premise of this trifecta relationship being that if there is one thing that father and son can do well together, it is work together on something to win. In this case a giant, arse-kicking robot that has a very similar personality to a loveable Ivan Drago.

Should you see it? Yes. It’s fun, but a bit mindless. Jackman is great to watch as ever and its broad appeal will connect to a lot of different tastes and ages. But that’s where it also has its rough edges, as it’s basically nothing new and actually quite formulaic. It’s also 127 minutes long, and gets a bit predictive in its cadences, especially as the film nears its end.

The film means well, and does pack some nicely placed emotional punches, but for the film connoisseurs it may be a choice for a DVD night in then a box office evening out. For everyone else who likes to dig into a good ol’ actiony, fun, sci-fi flick at the picture house – Ding-Ding!

***~~ (3/5)

Real Steel hits UK cinemas tomorrow. It’s a great action movie with more robots than you can shake a stick at. We got to speak with it’s director, Shawn Levy at the Big Screen event back in August about the movie, how it came about and what we can expect from it.

Shawn has previously directed Cheaper by the Dozen and Night at the Museum, and Real Steel was a very different movie to shoot that either of the films. In this interview we also get to hear how he learn to use motion capture and what it was like working with legends Steven Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis who Produced the film.

Real Steel is out tomorrow, 14th October.

———————

HeyUGuys: Can you tell us about how the fight sequences were filmed?

Shawn Levy: All the suits were motion capture, actual boxers. We would then take the raw motion capture data and we would put it through the system, harden the movements and then render it out. Sometimes we would make CG tweaks but 95% of the boxing was motion captured real fighters.

HeyUGuys: So was the movie shot on location or was it all done in a studio?

Shawn: It’s called mo-cap SimulCam B and it’s an offshoot of thee way Cameron did on Avatar. We captured the fights six months before we shot it. The system, then converted every fighter into their robot avatar. Then six months later, I went to Detroit and I would do a shot for instance of Hugh Jackman in the ring. The system then plugs in the fight action from the matching perspective if where I put my live action camera, and that’s what’s called SimulCam B so when I was watching my monitor and operation my camera, I was already seeing Hugh, Noisey Boy and Midas in the frame. That’s why operating is so dynamic as you’re not guessing. You’re operating the fight in your eyepiece.

HeyUGuys: How did you find that as a Director when never using it before?

Shawn: This was an intense learning curve, much like going from Night at the Museum from Cheaper By the Dozen from no effects to many digital effects, and then on this one, from some visual effects to next generation visual effects but after a few weeks, I had it dialled in.

HeyUGuys: You must have a great team of people around you who are able to help with this transition?

Shawn: I have a guy in particular and you can safely say he’s the best First Assistant Director in the world, his name is Josh McGlaglin. He did Titanic, Avatar, Night at the Museum, Castaway. And when I took on this project, I said to him ‘Zulu’ cos that’s his nickname, I said ‘Zulu, you have to teach me everything!’ and he did. It’s like being in high school or college where you’re sitting in class and you’re completely lost. You’re so lost that you don’t even understand the words that people are using. For me I was so determined not to let it beat me and I then I figured it out.

HeyUGuys: What year is the film set?

Shawn: It’s mentioned on in passing twice. It’s set in 2020. If I had to do it again, I’d have set it a little further in the future but as you’ve seen in the movie, I wanted a world where it looked like our own in which a new sport had evolved. We used the word retro-forward a lot and you’ll notice in the movie that it has a very retro Americano look but it’s got these futuristic touches. Like Charlie Kenton’s truck for instance. The cab of that truck is 50 years old. We bought this truck which is a vintage item, sheared it off behind the steering wheel and we build a futuristic body. It’s got those weird glass panels and we custom built that at great expense but it’s why the movie has a unique design look.

HeyUGuys: What was it like for you getting names like Steve Spielberg and Robert Zemeckis on board for the project?

Shawn: Best ever! When I went to meet with Steven in New York, I haven’t been nervous like that in ten years! But it’s a good nervous! Really, deep down you hope that when you make these movies, you hope that the success of them will earn you the privilege of diversity; that’s at least how I’ve always approached my career. To have that happen, to get a call from such a lofty mentor, to do a movie so completely unlike anything I’ve done, it’s really what I’ve been working for.

Bob isn’t in LA as much but he came in and consulted with me on the robot designs and the truth is, if you’re doing a creature design movie, and you’re two advisors are Zemeckis and Spielberg, it’s pretty amazing company.

HeyUGuys: Did you have visions inside your head of what the robots would look like and the screens that controlled them?

Shawn: The consoles in the corners of the league fights are called the fight deck. They were super cool and super expensive!

HeyUGuys: So were they real consoles which you digitised afterwards?

Shawn: Yes, with double joysticks and keypads and interactive screens. The design of it, some of the ideas were mine, some of them were Tom Myers the designer, we designed 19 robots. But I wanted everyone of them to have their own pallet, their own style of fighting, their own look. And Tom Meyer oversaw an amazing team of illustrators and gave them that visual diversity. But the real triumph in my opinion is Atom’s design is so simple and evocative and I’m really happy with how he turned out because he’s the third lead in the movie.

HeyUGuys: In the background of the film, there were loads of 3D cameras – does that mean you think 3D will be the standard? Also adverts for Virgin Galactic and Xbox 720, how did you go about getting permission to put in all these futuristic brands?

Shawn: Getting the permission of the brands was a nightmare, but really worth it. I think 3D will be much more interwoven into the fabric of our media yes so that#s why I did that. When I went to the Aldo fight in Vegas, a big title fight, I was amazed at how there is music, constant music. And it’s why we have an amazing soundtrack. I screened the movie for Crystal Method, for Timberland, for the Beasties. These venues likes soccer venues are wall to wall adverts so we approached dozens and dozens of adverts. In many cases we asked them not only for the chance to use their logo but also to help them design a future logo.

HeyUGuys: What can we expect from the sequel?

Shawn: When we started screaming the movie, we started seeing the overwhelmingly response to the movie so Dreamworks asked us John Gatins and I to develop a second movie. We took a while, we took three of four months before we had a take that we thought was worth doing. The next one will explore more of the rivalry between the underworld and the league and we’ll also explore what happens to Zeus and Tak Mashido but it’s a pretty cool next iteration of the story.

HeyUGuys: Can we expect Real Steel 2 to be in 3D, especially with Spielberg behind it?

Shawn: It could be. Steven certainly in support of 3D but on this movie, he very much thought that 2D was the way to go to keep the focus on the characters. We’ll see how we feel and we’ll also learn about our franchise if it becomes a franchise with the way that people react to the first movie.

The fantastic news came just a few days ago that John Goodman, known for such brilliant roles as Sulley in Monsters, Inc. and of course Walter in The Big Lebowski, is set to join Robert Zemeckis’ return to live-action in Flight, starring as the best friend of the leading man, Denzel Washington.

More great casting additions have now surfaced over at THR, with Academy Award-winning Melissa Leo (The Fighter) and James Badge Dale (TV’s 24 and The Pacific) in talks to join the project.

Written by John Gatins (Coach Carter, the upcoming Real Steel), Flight,

“centers on an alcoholic and drug-addicted pilot (Washington) whose plane engine malfunctions, forcing him to rescue the aircraft and its passengers, becoming a hero in the process. When the FAA investigates and finds evidence of drug abuse, it tries to sweep the evidence to the side to help preserve the image of the captain, who is trying to change the course of his life.”

If talks go well, Dale would be playing a dying cancer patient and Leo an investigator determined to expose Washington’s character’s drug addiction and cast the blame upon him.

Leo’s talents were deservedly well recognised at the Oscars earlier this year, where she won Best Actress for her part as Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale’s mother in The Fighter. She’s currently starring in Kevin Smith’s Red State, out in cinemas now, having just been nominated for an Emmy for her role in Mildred Pierce.

After a terrific role in the third season of 24 as Kim Bauer’s boyfriend and Jack’s fellow CTU agent, Dale has mostly been picking up small roles here and there, but has seen some attention heading his way in the past year or so, with a lead role in HBO’s The Pacific, and upcoming roles in Steve McQueen’s highly anticipated Shame with Michael Fassbender, Joe Carnahan’s The Grey with Liam Neeson, and Marc Forster’s World War Z with Brad Pitt.

With Bruce Greenwood having just officially signed on for the project too, and Don Cheadle and Kelly Reilly in negotiations along with Goodman, and of course with Washington as the leading man, signing on to Flight can only be good news and further great recognition for both Leo and Dale, and hopefully we’ll soon be getting the news that their negotiations have been successful. This is definitely shaping up to be a project to look forward to.

The film will see Zemeckis’ first return to live-action since 2000’s Cast Away, having directed The Polar Express, Beowulf, and A Christmas Carol in the years since then, and will be written by the rising screenwriter, John Gatins (Coach Carter, the upcoming Real Steel).

Flight will see,

“Denzel Washington as an airline pilot who averts a plane crash, only to come under a cloud for possible substance abuse problems. Goodman will play a friend of the pilot who helps him come to terms with his problems.”

I think the pairing of Washington and Goodman on the screen will be absolutely brilliant, and I can’t wait to see it happen. Both men are now in their late fifties, and both have had such immense roles in all their years of acting, and seeing them come together for this project should be awesome.

Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda), Kelly Reilly (Sherlock Holmes), and Bruce Greenwood (JJ Abrams’ Star Trek) are also in negotiations to star, and with Goodman now coming into talks to join too, the cast is really shaping up nicely.

Goodman is coming into our cinemas as of today with Kevin Smith’s Red State (which I cannot wait to see), and will soon be soon in the upcoming silent film, The Artist, which has some pretty big buzz surrounding it, and the Tom Hanks-starring Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and is currently at work filming Ben Affleck’s Argo, the highly anticipated follow-up to last year’s The Town. Essentially, Goodman is going to be in a number of ridiculously brilliant projects over the next few years (and we can add to that list Monsters University), and Flight will hopefully be yet another film of his to look forward to.

It’s only a small picture, but it continues the excellent work we’ve seen so far from the film, and there’s more fun to be had with the previously seen concept art, poster and character designs. Lea Michele has been plucked from her Gleedom to lend her voice to Dorothy Gale in Summertime Entertainment’s film, which is set just after the events of The Wizard of Oz with a tornado wrecked Kansas and a sudden trip back to Oz to meet up with her new friends.

There’s no denying that the artwork looks gorgeous and the rest of the cast, which includes Dan Akroyd, Kelsey Grammer and Patrick Stewart, promises something pretty spectacular. Here’s hoping Toto falls under a house in the first few minutes.

Here’s the pic, which was over at MTV first.

News has come through (via The Hollywood Reporter) that the Forrest Gump director is circling a project called Flight. It’s the story of a pilot (wrestling with a drink and drug addiction), who becomes an accidental hero after rescuing his aircraft and passengers after an engine malfunction.

Yep, you’ve guessed it – everyman hero of the people, Denzel Washington, is “loosely” attached to the project, although it sounds like something tailor-made for him.

The last time Zemeckis wasn’t directing actors in green suits and asking them to emote with a dangling tennis ball was 2000’s underrated Robinson Crusoe-esque drama, Castaway. Whatever advancements he’s made in the animated, mo-cap field, I’m sure fans will be happy to see him back in the land of the living.

Mars Needs Moms is the latest motion-capture animation film from Robert Zemeckis’ ImageMovers Digital production studio, and is an adaptation of Berkeley Breathed’s beloved children’s novel.

The film centers on Milo, a young boy who gains a deeper appreciation for his mum after Martians come to Earth and take her away to harvest her mothering prowess for their nanny bots.

Simon and Wendy Wells have penned a screenplay that is so devoid of magic and charm that it ultimately lacks an engaging narrative, three-dimensional characters or any humour. It often resorts to thrill ride antics, detached action and a lot of racing around in the desperate hope of evoking some enjoyment, but falls flat on its face in the process.

Aside from attempting to convey a very well hidden message about children devoting more time and attention to their parents, it’s an altogether impersonal experience. The script, by never allowing enough time to get to know Milo and his mum – or any other character for that matter – on a personal basis, has clearly been brushed aside in favour of these so-called more realistic digital imager effects.

Due to the digital obsession, the characters are extremely unlikeable. Behind the revolutionary motion-capture technology, they feel too simplistic and superficial or, in more simple terms, totally dead behind the eyes to emote with. Seth Green, Dan Fogler and Joan Cusack provide respectable voice-overs, but aren’t distracting enough, or able to transpose enough of their personality and passion to bring the dialogue and concealed heartfelt message to life.

The motion-capture animation, which has been implemented by Zemeckis before on The Polar Expess, is worse than ever. It’s hard to remember that a visionary director such as Zemeckis was responsible for such instrumental films as Back to the Future and Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, when we’re bestowed with such nonsense.

The 3D is unnecessary and, along with the bland, dark and unattractive cinematography, makes Mars looks like a dreadful planet, somewhere you’d desperately want to avoid at all costs.

Mars Needs Moms is a badly animated, dispassionate and irresolute mess that will unquestionably scorn Walt Disney Pictures’ renowned brand for years to come.

Still riding high on the ongoing success of Wicked in theatres, there has been talk of the wonderful Wizard and his homeland coming thick and fast over the last year.

But while most of the hype and debate has focused on Sam Raimi’s Oz: The Great and Powerful to the mooted Robert Zemeckis remake of the original film, the upcoming animated adventure Dorothy of Oz has been keeping itself a little quieter – until now.

Previously we’d seen a little concept art here and there, but now we have a full blown promotional poster to get excited over, sure to delight Oz-fans with it’s recognisable trademarks:

Here’s the film’s official synopsis:

There is trouble in Oz and Dorothy is needed! With Glinda’s help, she and Toto return to Oz. Joined by her old friends the Scarecrow, the Tin Woodman, the Lion as well as exciting new characters, Dorothy sets out on a perilous journey to stop the crafty Jester from using the power of the Wicked Witch of the West’s wand to turn the people of Oz into puppets. That seems to be the least of Dorothy’s problems as her travels lead her straight into a treacherous maze, a cave full of very hungry dragons and an evil spell that could destroy the Yellow Brick Road. Dorothy has the daunting knowledge that it is up to her to stop Jester’s terrible plan. Audiences will welcome the return of the old Oz favorites and will love meeting new friends like Tugg a gruff talking boat and Wiser an owl with an unlucky attraction to molasses.

Written in the whimsical style of L. Frank Baum, “Dorothy of Oz” is sure to delight Oz fans old and new as they journey once again into the magical land of OZ.

Based on the book by Roger Stanton Baum (great-Grandson of Oz creator, L. Frank Baum), and featuring the voice talents of Lea Michele, Martin Short, Dan Akroyd, Kelsey Grammer and Patrick Stewart, Dororthy of Oz is being produced by Summertime Entertainment and will be released in 2012. Here’s hoping it’ll be a tornado of success.

THR have just reported that due to the low box office haul of its latest animation Mars Needs Moms, which Zemeckis had a producer’s credit on, Disney have dropped his Yellow Submarine project and it now languishes in murky waters with an increasingly unlikely chance that it’ll be rescued by another studio willing to take on the project.

What relevance this will have to the Spielberg/Jackson fronted The Adventure of Tintin is unclear – Mars Needs Moms is nowhere near as valuable or recongisable as Herge’s classic creation and while I thought that Mars Needs Moms didn’t need to be in mad with CG performance capture this may be a sign that audiences are tired of it too. The director’s Imagemovers studio, which made The Polar Express and the recent Beowulf adaptation, was closed and renamed Imagemovers Digital a few years after Disney bought the studio. The word was that Zemeckis was going to relaunch the studio to produce his Yellow Submarine film, a prospect which is now looking unlikely.

Coincidentally I was watching the 1968 Yellow Submarine this morning and was struck by the playful, yet very dark tone of the film, and wondered how much it needed to have been a product of its time to work. It was not nostalgic in the way a modern remake would be, and there is much in George Dunning’s film that would need to be left behind to appeal to a wide audience. The only real shame of this news is that we won’t get to see/hear Peter Serafinowicz as Paul McCartney as he, along with Cary Elwes, Dean Lennox Kelly and Adam Campbell were set to play the fab four.

Oh, and the opening attack by the Blue Meanies in the 1968 film really reminded me of the 2005 Spielberg directed War of the Worlds. Chilling.

Let’s hope the composer can create a score which is up there with some of his best-known and celebrated work, particularly those stemming films from his long and successful collaboration with director Robert Zemeckis (would Back to the Future have reached those same giddy heights without Silvestri’s involvement?) .

Mars Needs Moms! is directed by Simon Wells and produced by performance-capture expert Robert Zemeckis (Monster House).

The film features voices of Seth Green, Joan Cusack, Elisabeth Harnois, Dan Fogler and Mindy Sterling.

Mars Needs Moms! will be released in the US on March 11, 2011. A UK release date has not yet been confirmed.

The film follows a rebellious 9-year-old boy named Milo, who is just beginning summer. His mother gives him chores and tasks like weeding the garden or eating his vegetables. But after Milo tints his 5-year-old sister’s face purple, his mother sees no humor in this and sends him to his room. After a heated argument with his mother in which Milo says “I don’t see what’s so special about mothers!”, Milo is grounded for the rest of the summer. After falling asleep, Milo does not hear the rumble of the rocket landing outside. After, Martians enter Milo’s house and take away his mother, Milo realizes that he has to rescue her.

On the parts of Peter S. Seaman and Jeffrey Price’s script he had read, Zemeckis said:

“It’s great… I think it’s gonna be great.”

A sequel to Who Framed Roger Rabbit has been rumoured since the first film, which was released back in 1988, became a critical and commercial success worldwide.

Don Hahn revealed in an interview with Empire magazine earlier this year that a sequel was definitely in development:

“Yeah, I couldn’t possibly comment. I deny completely, but yeah… if you’re a fan, pretty soon you’re going to be very, very, very happy.”

So there, it seems after 12 years of waiting, we could have our long-awaited sequel after all.

That said, i know people are desperate to see them which is why I’m posting two more here.

If you’ve never seen Back to the Future before, either wait until Monday and buy the blu-ray or click here and enter our competition to win this very Special Edition. Not least if them were Doc Brown (Christopher Lloyd) and Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) to promote the remastered re-release version of Back to the Future.

The duo were introduced by David Slade arriving from 1985 in a DeLorean who ended up looking quite like Eric Stoltz (not sure if that was intentional? See here why if you’re not sure). If you love Back to the Future, you have to watch this footage below cos you’ll absolutely love it!

The Blu-ray is released October 25th and we have the chance for you to win the special edition copy here.
