With less than four months to go until its release, it’s a testament to the promotion of Ridley Scott’s upcoming sci-fi actioner that we’ve still not got a clear hold on what the film’s about. Though we’ve been teased by quite a bit in recent months, we’re still pretty much in the dark, which is a great place to be in my books.

The first trailer that landed just before Christmas was brilliant, without giving anything away, and I’m hoping that things stay that way up until its release this summer.

In keeping with the lack of reveal and increase of intrigue, a new image has surfaced of two of the leads in their now-familiar space suits, and judging from the direction of their gaze (i.e. up), it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch to imagine that they might be looking at the giant head that we’ve been seeing over the past few months.

The new image shows us Logan Marshall-Green and Noomi Rapace futuristically kitted out, and we can also look forward to a great cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Rafe Spall, and Patrick Wilson.

In this age of super-saturation with film marketing, Prometheus has admirably bucked the trend. Of all of the teaser trailers launched lately, it has kept its cards closest to its chest, saved more surprises for us the humble viewers and succeeded in generating much more interest as a helpful by-product.

Much of the response to what we have seen of Prometheus so far (and we have helpfully gathered it all together for you here) has been more questions – what is that statue? Why is that person screaming? Who is the vaguely humanoid creature jumping down? How does this fit into the rest of the Alien Universe? It is perhaps a sign of the times that some are annoyed or disgruntled by the teasing drip-feed we are getting, when we should instead be applauding the slow-burn approach being taken by Ridley Scott and his team.

All we have that is new for now (though in due course we are sure to get a more fleshed out trailer) is a still, showing the human head statue that we have seen before, but better lit and more clearly on show. Not much admittedly, but impressive looking nonetheless and with great surrounding detail of what is likely to be the interior of the doughnut ship from Alien and the Prometheus teaser trailer.

In what is quite possibly one of the most interesting pieces of news I’ve heard recently, YouTube have announced that they will be launching a film festival next month, entitled Your Film Festival, that will start off online and then send ten finalists to this year’s Venice Film Festival, which will run from 31^st August to 10^th September.

Yahoo Movies report that Your Film Festival will be accepting submissions of short films up to fifteen minutes in length from 2^nd February to 31^st March, from which fifty semi-finalists will be selected by Scott Free Productions, Ridley and Tony Scott’s production company, whose credits include Black Hawk Down, Gladiator, and American Gangster.

These fifty semi-finalists will then be launched on their own YouTube channel, www.YouTube.com/yourfilmfestival, where viewers can watch and vote for their favourite short films. Ten finalists will then be jetted off to the 69^th Venice Film Festival, where a jury led by Ridley Scott himself will judge the winning short, which will receive a $500,000 grant from YouTube to produce a work with Scott Free Productions.

(Translation: This could be a chance of a lifetime.)

YouTube are set to be promoting the competition at Sundance Film Festival this month and then South By Southwest (SXSW) in March to encourage young filmmakers and producers to consider YouTube as a serious pathway to industry attention, and with a film competition like this launching, you have to believe that they’re taking themselves and filmmakers seriously.

“Short filmmaking is exactly where I started my career 50 years ago, so to be helping new filmmakers find an entry point like this into the industry is fantastic,” said Scott.

The competition is open to entrants across the globe, with subtitles added to international films. All you have to be is 18, and have not had your short distributed prior to 1^st January, 2010. And with a bit of luck, hopefully it will be held annually, to give filmmakers this kind of chance every year.

YouTube have put together a brilliant and inspirational video to promote the competition below, interviewing directors Fede Alvarez, Jon M. Chu, and Josh Raskin, all of whom started out in short films. Alvarez has since signed on to direct the upcoming The Evil Dead remake with Lily Collins in the lead; Chu has directed the second and third Step Up films, as well as the Justin Bieber: Never Say Never documentary, and the upcoming G.I. Joe: Retaliation; and Raskin’s short film I Met The Walrus was nominated back in 2008 at the Academy Awards.

So if you’re an aspiring filmmaker, or you know someone who is, this is definitely something to pay attention to.

You have until 31^st March.

While the recent look at the Space Jockey mask gave further hints at the links between Alien and Prometheus there’s something a little more tangible on offer today with this new image from Ridley Soctt’s film from the L.A. Times (via Coming Soon).

Lining up behind Noomi Rapace are a couple of space jockey suits and there’s a far bet that Nooms has just caught a glimpse of what goes inside one of them. Man, this is a tease-a-thon isn’t it? Only a few months to go until we get the chance to see Scott’s film, easily one of the most anticipated of the year.

From the maker of The Lion King Rises comes… WALL-ETHEUS.

At the start of the new year, you might have caught the brilliant mash-up trailer for The Dark Knight Rises and The Lion King. Another great new mash-up trailer has surfaced from the same guy who edited that together, Brad Hansen, which cuts together the beloved WALL-E and Ridley Scott’s upcoming Prometheus, and it’s pretty excellent.

The trailer for Prometheus landed at the end of last year, just in time for Christmas, and we can look forward to seeing it on the big screen here in the UK on 1st June. Judging by what we’ve seen so far, it’s going to be immense, with a cast that includes Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Charlize Theron, Logan Marshall-Green, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, and Patrick Wilson.

Released back in 2008, Pixar’s WALL-E was directed by Andrew Stanton (whose upcoming John Carter is due out this year – you can catch up on all things related here), and earned the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, as well as taking north of a rather cool $500m. at the international box office.

Mix the two together and what do you get?

Something epic.

Just like the combination of The Dark Knight Rises and The Lion King brought a new sense of intensity to the visuals of the latter’s original trailer, so too do we get a great added level of awesomeness this time around with the mash-up between Prometheus and WALL-E. Enjoy.

There are pictures doing the rounds today which appear to offer further proof that Ridley Scott’s forthcoming Prometheus shares more than a little DNA with his Alien film.

Cinemart claim these pictures come from a trustworthy source deep in the design department of the production and show a mask resembling that of the sad old Space Jockey from Scott’s 1979 film.

The source told the site that this mask was for ‘the alien’ from the film, and that it would feature in the film with ‘very little CGI’ enhancement. For a bit of context the filmmaker spoke to MTV  about the place of the Space Jockey in his new film,

I have to design — or redesign — earlier versions of what these elements are that led to the thing you finally see in “Alien,” which is the thing that catapults out of the egg, the face-hugger… I don’t want to repeat it. The alien in a sense, as a shape, is worn out… maybe we’ll come up with something completely different.

Scott then expanded on the central role of the Space Jockey,

What we’re going to try to do is squeeze in two prequels. . . if you explain who he was and where did he come from. . . then you may want to find out where they came from, you might want to go to him and go to the place where his people come from.

The clever chaps at UK PR Company Way to Blue (WTB) have done it again and delivered some fabulous graphs detailing the impact of trailers released just before the Christmas holidays when we saw he Hobbit (Peter Jackson), The Dark Knight Rises (Christopher Nolan) and Prometheus (Ridley Scott) all released. All three of these movies are going to be massive but the hype for each has beaten any that I’ve ever seen before. WTB released an infographic a while back for the trailer release of Snow White and the Huntsman and Mirror Mirror and this time have created various graphics / graphics showing the social media impact of the three movies stated above.

Again, I’m a little surprised at the results. I know The Hobbit is hugely anticipated but from the stats we collected from the three different trailers, The Dark Knight Rises was by far the most popular. This does of course not mean a huge amount as it can depend on the time of day, how long after it hits we post hit and various other factors. They also have graphs detailing which director had the most buzz and various other bits and bobs, all of which are awesome.

There’s not a lot to go on here, although the glowing paper bag looks…intriguing and I love the design that we’ve seen so far from the production.   If you haven’t seen the trailer which came out just before Christmas then click here to take a look.

And it’s about time…

Teased beyond the point of parody we now have the chance to see what Ridley Scott and screenwriter Damon Lindelof have been working on for what seems like an age. The highly anticipated film has gone from being a full on Space Jockey-centred prequel to Alien to a far grander sci-fi tale, telling us the story of a discovery of the origin of life in the universe.

The trailer hints at the links, not least the slowly revealing font, Gigeresque corridor and it looks like we’ll see what happened to the ship where it all started in Alien. Oh, and the flash at 00:26 is very interesting…

Ridley Scott has a very interesting cast in the form of Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green and Charlize Theron but it is the return of the director to the sci-fi genre that is the real draw here.

Here’s your trailer, which we hope to have in HD soon. The film is out in the UK on the 1st of June.

Tis the season to pump out new trailers for some of the biggest films of 2012 clearly and the curious question of how to keep the flames of anticipation for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus stoked while competing trailers pop up around it has given rise to a daily tease for the unveiling of the first look of Scott’s return to the world of Space Jockeys and acid blooded xenomorphs.

This new look is in keeping with teases one and two in that the director talks briefly about the project while new footage flickers on-screen for seconds at a time. Thank goodness the trailer hits tomorrow…

There’s also a new pic from the all-singing Empire which is below, featuring Michael Fassbender who once described his character as a ’10-pound rent boy’, though it has long been rumoured that he is an android cut from the same circuit boards as Ash and Bishop.

If you’re not already adrift in the seemingly endless torrent of trailers we’ve seen today there’s a little more for you.

Earlier this evening we posted a short teaser for the imminent trailer for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus, a film which commands huge expectation and which has, so far, been relatively shrouded in secrecy. Now there’s a second teaser which has a little more footage from the film.

I’m happily posting this here because I know there are people out there who will want to see anything from Prometheus as soon as possible, so while the concept of a trailer for a trailer boggles my mind there’s some brief glimpses to pour over until the trailer arrives on Thursday (or so we’re led to believe).

Tonight has gone completely nuts! Not only do we have the theatrical trailer for The Dark Knight Rises (which if you haven’t seen you MUST!) but now Fox have also released a trailer for the trailer (sort of a mini featurette) for Ridley Scott’s Prometheus three days before it’s set to hit!

Prometheus stars Noomi Rapace, Michael Fassbender, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron and is set for release Summer 2012.

Before all the talk of Ridley Scott returning to the world of Blade Runner for a sequelprequelrebootremakewhoknows a far greater prospect was already being worked on in deepest, darkest Pinewood as Scott was formulating his return to the cinematic landscape of a film which made his name: his Alienverse movie Prometheus.

Reports from Comic-Con of the screening of footage from the film were almost universally positive and while we’ve  heard rumblings that a trailer is imminent we only have a vague plot synopsis and  a handful of images this far. In some ways I’d prefer it if we could all enter the cinemas in June next year knowing nothing about it at all – and that’s clearly an option open to everyone and we each make our choice, but I have the feeling that this one will be better enjoyed that way. Oh well – having said all that here’s what looks like being the first poster for the film!

Alien Prequel News were sent this by someone who is either a well-placed fan or a talented artist looking to see how far his creation flies around the world, and they are claiming the exclusive look at the first poster. They have been very solid in the past and there’s nothing to say it isn’t the official poster and the tagline (which is ‘The search for our beginning could lead to our end’) smacks of being the perfect marketing tease for the film given the synopsis we’ve seen. I’m hoping this may force Fox to bring forward to release of the poster/trailer combo which is rumoured to be just around the corner.

In the images, we get our first look at Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron and Idris Elba as well as the huge giant head which looks to me like Marlon Brando?!

Also starring in the movie are Guy Pearce and Ben Foster. We can expect the movie 1st June 2012.

Ridley Scott’s return to the world of science fiction with Prometheus is something that is immensely anticipated next year, and that anticipation is even further heightened by the fact that we know so little about the project.

If you’ve missed our coverage of the film so far, you can catch up on it all here, including the first two images from the film that both looked pretty damn awesome, but didn’t really help our understanding of what it would be about.

That understanding has now slightly been improved with the release of an updated plot synopsis courtesy of the film’s Facebook page, via CinemaBlend.com, that lets us in on a little more detail of what we can expect. The synopsis as we have known it up until know has read,

“Visionary filmmaker Ridley Scott returns to the genre he helped define, creating an original science fiction epic set in the most dangerous corners of the universe. The film takes a team of scientists and explorers on a thrilling journey that will test their physical and mental limits and strand them on a distant world, where they will discover the answers to our most profound questions and to life’s ultimate mystery.”

And the new updated version now gives is a little more to go on,

“Ridley Scott, director of “Alien” and “Blade Runner,” returns to the genre he helped define. With PROMETHEUS, he creates a groundbreaking mythology, in which a team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a thrilling journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.”

A third of the description is still dedicated to Scott and his well-established credits, with a nod to his earlier sci-fi films, but we do get the interesting notion of the film exploring the origins of mankind on Earth, and a battle for the future of the human race.

Prometheus has been co-written by Jon Spaihts (the upcoming The Darkest Hour) and Damon Lindelof (co-creator of TV’s Lost, and co-writer on the forthcoming Star Trek sequel), and will have an all-star cast that includes Michael Fassbender, Logan Marshall-Green, Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce, Idris Elba, and Patrick Wilson.

This was a film that was always going to be immense – Scott no doubt wouldn’t (potentially) return to the world of his Alien films if it wasn’t worth revisiting – but reading that synopsis makes me look forward to its release even more. Prometheus is set to come out on 8th June next year, and will almost definitely be one of the biggest films of 2012, and quite possibly Scott’s career.

For anyone whose interests in a Robocop reboot were bolstered considerably by news that Elite Squad’s José Padilha had signed on to direct, this may make give you further faith in the idea of a new take on the property.

Padilha (who is co-scripting) is interested in man of the moment Michael Fassbender to play Alex Murphy, the Detroit policeman killed in the line of duty who is resurrected as the future of law enforcement. In the interview (picked up by Collider) the Brazilian filmmaker explains his plans to meet the actor, but as Fassbender has already showed up in X-Men: First Class earlier this summer (and has Ridley Scott’s Prometheus due around the same time next year), he could be suffering from fantasy fatigue.

He’s definitely an exciting choice (and physically, he’s quite similar to original star Peter Weller) so let’s hope he’s happy to delve into that big-budget genre world so soon again.

Our man at Comic-Con was on his email soon after sitting in on the Prometheus panel a couple of weeks ago to tell us about the epic footage Ridley Scott screened for the collected geekery. You can read his take and see the video from the floor here, and it sounds very impressive indeed.

Given the tight security here in the UK on the set of the film it seems fairly understandable that the footage screened didn’t make it online, as is the way with almost everything these days, within a few hours of it playing to the Comic-Con crowds. Days passed and no bootleg video surfaced and fans went back to pour over the scant info and single image Fox had made available. That changes now, as there clearly was someone recording the footage as it played and several still images have surfaced online.

Let me be clear – if you’re looking forward to seeing this film (and who isn’t?) but have a modicum of patience you would do well to wait until a shiny HD version of the teaser trailer is officially released by Fox as enticing as these new peeks into the Alienverse are they beg to move and to be seen clearly. I wanted to post these because I know some of you can’t wait for a further glimpse of Ridley’s Scott return to science fiction.

Comic Con 2011 is now done and dusted but that hasn’t stopped images for movies that were promoted there coming out. Bloody Disgusting have what they claim to be the second official image (the first is here if you missed it) from the movie but it doesn’t really show us too much more. I’m also not sure it’s an image from the movie as is shows a man in a high visibility vest wandering around. I guess that doesn’t mean it’s not from the movie but it could just be a set image of the current filming in Iceland.

During Comic Con, director Ridley Scott joined Hall H’s 6500 attendants to talk about the movie via a Satellite link and people seems to love what they saw. If you missed that too, you can catch Ezequiel’s report here which includes the video of Scott talking.

2oth Century Fox brought several films to Hall H this  year, all of them impressive. The following is a round up of a few great moments from the panel including some footage description we were treated to.  Besides “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” Fox hadn’t really announced what other films were being presented.  I will end with “Apes” as it ended the panel, so we’ll just go in order.

Prometheus

In one of the few “only at Comic-Con” moments that I’ve experienced today, legendary director Ridley Scott found a way to join the panel live from Iceland.  Thats right, we are in San Diego but Ridley was standing on top of a waterfall answering questions from moderator Damon Lindelof.  Besides talking about the film and its stellar cast, including Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba and the beautiful Charlize Theron (who was present for the Q&A), Ridley gave us an amazing look at “Prometheus”.

The footage actually looks exactly like “Alien”.  Some might say thats not a good thing, but I loved the hell out of that film so I say bring it on.  A lot of people have been assuming that the film is actually an “Alien” prequel.  Ridley stated during the panel that there is only a bit of DNA from that film that exists in Prometheus.  However, I think it’s safe to say that the DNA shows up at the end of the film giving credence to that rumor. Charlize Theron was on hand to talk about her character, who feels like it could be “new Ripley”.  She states that her character is ‘a suit who slowly sheds that skin through the film’. She is basically warn down to the bone by the end of the film and states that this is unlike anything she has ever done before.  Overall, I have high hopes for it as it looks like Scott is where he belongs.

In Time

This film is directed by “Gattaca” and “The Truman Show” scribe Andrew Niccol and stars Justin Timberlake, Amanda Seyfried and Cillian Murphy.  As much as I love all those actors, I’m most excited about Vincent Kartheiser’s involvement in the film.  Some of you may know him as Pete Campbell from AMC’s “Mad Men” and in this he seems to playing a perfect little weasel, just as in the Emmy Award winning series. The film is about a future world in which people stop aging at 25, and have a year before they die unless they “earn” their time.  Justin Timberlake plays Will Salas who has been framed for the murder of a man who had a lot of time on his hands.  He goes on the run all the while stealing time and giving it to people who don’t have any left.  Yes, it’s a modern day Robin Hood, but it seems really interesting.  I think it walks that fine line where it could be terrible or really good.  So let’s just say I’m optimistic. But with a solid cast and Niccol at the helm, I say bring it on.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes

This is Fox’s golden goose this year and it looks better and better every time I see it.  I’ll start by saying that I don’t really care about the “Apes” franchise.  I have never seen the older films and don’t really have a strong desire to. I made the mistake of watching the Tim Burton film, which didn’t help clearly. However, this prequel looks pretty stunning.  I would say that overall it feels a bit generic as far as uprising films go, but it LOOKS amazing.  When you have the folks over at Weta taking care of the Visual Effects, we don’t question their resolve to make a beautiful film.  When you add Andy Serkis in the motion capture suit playing the main character of Caesar, you start to get more than excited.  Serkis was on hand to discuss being back in the suit playing another ape.  For those who aren’t aware, Serkis also played King Kong in Peter Jackson’s film, but revolutionized Motion capture, and should have been nominated for an Oscar for his role as Gollum, in the “Lord of the Rings” films.

We were shown quite a bit of footage included the entire sequence of Caesar protecting John Lithgow from the trailer. It gets very tense and represents the first time Caesar realizes he’s not supposed to be living as a human as he has been doing during the film thus far.  He knows he shouldn’t be there.  The facial features on Caesar are mind boggling.  All the apes look photo-real and it’s wonderful.  We were also giving a really nice long sizzle reel at the end of the panel that includes a lot of action from the third act of the film. Included in the reel was the moment right after that gorilla attacks the helicopter from the trailer. Let me safely say, that helicopter goes down.

Overall, I am really very excited about this film.  It has made me very interested in seeing what happens after this ape revolt portrayed in the film. The film lays down the seeds of the complete takeover and that is really fascinating to me.  I can’t wait to see this.
