Edward Norton does the identical twin routine in Tim Blake Nelson’s comedy about a pair of brothers whose divergent lives reconnect when news of the death of one draws the other back home.

One brother is a pot growing entrepreneur with a crippling lack of smarts and a talent for trouble while the other brother is an Ivy League professor on the verge of a huge promotion and keen to maintain the distance he has travelled from his humble beginnings.

When the learned sibling realises that reports of his brother’s death are not only greatly exaggerated, but are part of a plot to take down a domineering local crime boss, the Slackerdemic double act get to work at rebuilding bridges and sorting their lives out. Which is nowhere near as trite as it sounds. It’s a keenly felt, visually interesting and surprisingly nuanced comedy.

Edward Norton takes on the roles of both brothers while aplomb, though his pot grower from the sticks is at first a little too cornball, but as the film progresses we find both to be layered performances, capable of engaging our emotions and elevating the film. Norton has a habit of allowing the other characters to develop around him, almost fading to the background but this is why he is so magnetic a screen presence.

It’s a fairly standard premise elevated by a great supporting cast with Susan Sarandon’s role as the twins’ mother is soaked in pathos and gin and Richard Dreyfuss’s duplicitous drug baron Pug Rothbaum (a Coenesque name if ever there was one) is a coarse and chilling presence. It’s always great to see Melanie Lynskey on screen and Blake Nelson is virtually unrecognisable in his supporting role and you get the feeling that this film was made as a passion project rather than an attempt to attract a wide audience. Its cast is its greatest asset and its witty script will surprise those expecting a pothead crime caper – it is far deeper, and far more enjoyable than that.

Leaves of Grass is out now on DVD and VOD.

****~ (4/5)

The movie stars Edwards Norton…. Edward Norton (!) Susan Sarandon, Richard Dreyfuss, Keri Russell and Tim Blake Nelson.

Synopsis: Edward Norton stars with… Edward Norton in the comedic thriller, LEAVES OF GRASS, which is out on DVD on 21 February 2011 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment.

Norton plays dual roles in this witty thriller which also boasts an all-star cast including Susan Sarandon, Richard Dreyfuss, Keri Russell and Tim Blake Nelson.

Ivy League professor Bill Kincaid’s (Norton) life takes a downward spiral when he returns home to rural Oklahoma after receiving news of his twin brother’s murder in a pot deal gone bad. Upon arrival, he finds that reports of Brady’s (also played by Norton) death are “greatly exaggerated” and is quickly caught up in one of his brother’s schemes. A scheme in which Brady requires an air-tight alibi.

Despite severe doubts, Bill decides to participate in his brother’s plan, choosing to spend his time as “Brady” in the company of his mother, Daisy (Academy Award winner Susan Sarandon) who has retired from the counter-culture and prematurely chosen to move into a retirement home – and Janet (Keri Russell), an educated woman who has by-passed academia in favour of a quieter life.

Meanwhile, Brady and his best friend/business partner Bolger (writer-director Tim Blake Nelson) use this perfect alibi to confront one of the area’s most notorious drug dealers, Pug Rothbaum (Academy Award winner Richard Dreyfuss), about some unfinished business. Will Bill be prepared to risk everything to help his brother if things don’t go according to plan?

Frank Moses is trying hard to live the suburban dream. He puts out his bins, marks the changing of the seasons and keeps himself to himself like any good neighbour. Sarah Ross is slowly losing faith in the dating game. She daydreams away much of her day in her tiny grey cubicle, looking at postcards of anywhere-but-here and wishing someone would take her away from all this. Frank and Sarah meet on the phone. They bond over a mutual love of romance novels and a vulnerable avocado plant. It seems certain that the slow burn of their affection will warm them in their advancing years. Then Frank and Sarah meet in her apartment and it becomes apparent that Frank’s idea of romance is a much more violent affair…

RED is based upon an original graphic novel by Warren Ellis and illustrator Cully Hammer. The original Wildstorm imprint story ran only 66 pages long. Loving the character of former CIA agent and lonely retiree Frank Moses, Gregory Noveck – Senior VP of Creative Affairs at DC Comics – saw stardust in the story and brought writers Jon and Erich Hoeber on board to expand their tale to big screen proportions. The resulting project is a gently funny caper picture with lovely 1930s undertones. Under Robert Schwentke’s directorship RED bridges, with ease, the genres of action and comedy and offers viewers a chance to share a fun night at the movies with a generous handful of Hollywood veterans. The big marquee names – Willis, Freeman, Malkovich, Dreyfuss, Cox, Borgnine and Mirren – are a draw alone and the comedy pairings do not disappoint, tangling old relationships and new resentments through the gunfight peppered plot.

The premise of RED is lovely – there is great comedy mileage in reuniting a team of lethal retirees. There too are sweet notes of pathos in Frank’s loneliness and the ‘what if’ history between Brian Cox’s Russian agent and Helen Mirren’s efficient assassin Victoria. I was delighted to learn that Helen had chosen to channel rictus-grinning homemaker Martha Stewart in her performance, citing her combination of feminine softness and practicality and even borrowing her hairstyle! John Malkovich literally springs out of hiding and into action when Frank and Sarah determine to solve the mystery of the newly acquired targets on their backs and his pantomime paranoia injects an energy into the film that carries it through some of its flabbier moments. Praise is also due to Karl Urban, who proves his comedy chops as FBI agent William Cooper and provides some essential conflict of the emotional and physical kind.

There are flaws. The script, like the pecs on its star, could have been tighter. With such a cast onboard it was criminal not to capitalise on their verbal dexterity and whip up something a little more wisecracking. Kick Ass, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang and (the last Willis/Freeman outing) Lucky Number Slevin are each excellent examples of the alchemistic power a smart script has on an average story. For me Mary-Louise Parker is underutilised as adventure-hungry Sarah and this is a pity as, in the rare moments her character is allowed to take centre stage, she is a delight. The elder statesmen of the cast, though strong, seem overly reliant on their reputations preceding them and thus much of the characterisation is flimsy and superficial. As concerns action…well far be it from me to advocate blood lust but a higher body count would have been nice given the amount of ammo flying around yet the death count was A-Team sparse. And I for one could have handled a lot more Malkovich!

Perhaps not unlike the frustrated prospective UK retires of 2018 the cast of RED are Retired and Extremely Dangerous. You can catch them at a cinema near you from Friday.

Well, Deadline got its hands on a new clip from the film and although it isn’t the most impressive clip it does show us exactly how and why the ex-CIA operatives reunite.

You can check out the clip here.

The second clip comes from Yahoo and has the title “Secret Service” which features Victoria (Helen Mirren) and Marvin (John Malkovich) who are not impressed by their adversaries.

RED is released in the UK 22nd October.

Piranha 3D swam into theaters this weekend and with it came a return to campy gore-fests and schlock. These things, however, didn’t turn people away. Pulling in $10 million so far in only three days it seems there are quite a few people who wanted to see it. I must say, those that turned out, got quite an eye full.

The movie starts in the quiet town of Lake Victoria. The town is about to be over run by college students looking for drunken debauchery during spring break. Just prior to being overrun by scantily clad female co-eds and shirtless beer bonging boys, an earthquake strikes the middle of the lake, causing a rift to open. This rift unleashes the deadly prehistoric man…and women eaters all over those crazy kids partying away on the lake.

Now this is normally where I would go into my “I don’t like to give spoilers in my reviews” spiel, but honestly with Piranha 3D there really isn’t much to spoil. The most surprising thing about Piranha 3D was the cast. Richard Dreyfuss, Elizabeth Shue, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Christopher Lloyd, and Jerry O’Connell all play a part. There’s even a nice little cameo by Eli Roth. I won’t say they star, because only Elizabeth Shue and Adam Scott have the, shall I say, meatiest parts. But still, that’s quite a list. Piranha 3D was directed by Alexander Aja who has previous experience with all things horror with having directed the remake of The Hills Have Eyes as well as High Tension and Mirrors previously. While I wouldn’t call his latest a horror film, it definitely has moments of shock and awe. However, I wouldn’t say that Piranha 3D is shockingly awful.

Fresh Catch
One of the positives that Piranha 3D has going for it, is that you don’t go into this movie thinking it’s going to be a revelation on quality film making. It’s purely a guilty pleasure. The cast plays all of their parts in an over zealous manner. Jerry O’Connell especially. If character personalities were able to be shown in 3D, his would have out shone all of the other 3D effects.

This film doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not and I find that incredibly refreshing. At no time did it take itself seriously. Could this have been something that was shown on the SyFy network on a Saturday afternoon? Absolutely. Albeit censored to death, but still, it’s that type of movie. Was it a hoot to watch? You bet. I laughed harder at this film than I have at most comedies as of late. It even provided a few parts that I actually jumped at. That’s rare for me. I can normally get through the scariest of movies without the slightest startle, but for some reason this one caught me off guard. The few candy pieces I had in my hand at the time, actually ended up on the floor.

The one part that I loved the most came at the very beginning with Richard Dreyfuss. It’s a throwback to Jaws and that alone was enough to make me happy. Those who know Jaws well enough will be able to pick it out right away.

Dead Fish
For me this films biggest downfall actually had to do more with the 3D and the way it was filmed. I found that the underwater scenes were muddled and a bit hard to see. I haven’t talked to anyone else about it so it could have been just me. Colors are muted the minute you put those glasses on and this factor detracts from the underwater scenes. It took my eyes a while to adjust to the 3D as well.

The CGI isn’t the greatest, but that didn’t really bother me as much as it does in other films. Perhaps I’m giving this one a pass or not judging it as harshly and I would other films. You don’t go into this film expecting to be served lobster. You go in expecting fish sticks. Keep that in mind and there’s really not much to be disappointed about.

To be honest I can’t really fault the film for anything else. Sure, it could have been higher quality in regards to story, acting, and execution, but like I said before, that’s not what this film is all about. If you go for anything other than blood, boobs or body parts, you’ve gone to the wrong movie.

Reeling it in
Taking all of these factors into consideration, I have to say I was pretty pleased overall with Piranha 3D. If you’re looking for ridiculous escapist fun with loads of blood, floating appendages and college kids being torn apart, then this is the movie for you.

Even though it wasn’t screened for press prior to it’s release, it still seems to have done pretty decently this weekend. It will be interesting to see how it holds up next weekend now that word of mouth will be making the rounds. If it holds up, I wouldn’t be surprised to see more of these types of films in the queue. I could be wrong, but only time will tell.

If you’re on the fence about catching this one my advice to you is to just go with it. Don’t expect anything groundbreaking, just go for fun and you might be surprised. If you have seen it, let us know if you thought it was a nice tasty morsel or if it was just rotten.

To my knowledge, this is the first time the pair will have acted together since Back to the Future: Part III and it’s great to see them both back on the big screen!

Piranha 3d also stars Eli Roth, Dina Meyer, Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss and Kelly Brook It’s directed by Alexandre Aja and is scheduled for release this Friday, 20th August.

Check out the new clip called Partytime (I’m not sure why!) which debuted on the Sky Movies website earlier today. What can be better than someone batting Piranha away with a chair?!

Synopsis: A new type of terror is about to be cut lose on beautiful Lake Victoria.

Dimension Films have posted a new UK poster for their upcoming 3D horror film, effectively titled, Piranha 3D. The film is a remake of the 1978 comedy horror film, Piranha.

Synopsis: After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents.

Piranha 3D was directed by Alexandre Aja, from a script penned by Pete Goldfinger, Grégory Levasseur, Alexandre Aja and Josh Stolberg, and stars Christopher Lloyd, Kelly Brook, Richard Dreyfuss, Adam Scott, Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell, Ving Rhames, Paul Scheer, Dina Meyer and Ricardo Chavira.

Despite concerns that the film is a cheap money-making dud, the marketing campaign up to now has been solid. Combine that with a decent supporting cast and a studio who know the material and target audience, Piranha 3D could end up surprising a lot of people. From the trailer, it certainly looks like it could be a hugely enjoyable B-movie.

Check out the UK poster below, courtesy of Bloody-Disgusting:

Piranha 3D will hit UK cinemas on August 20, 2010.

In case you have no idea what this awesomely bloody film is about I have posted the official plot synopsis below.

Jaws…lots and lots of jaws. From acclaimed director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) comes the new action thriller PIRANHA 3D, in the latest eye-popping 3D technology. A new type of terror is about to be cut loose on beautiful Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents. But our heroine (Elisabeth Shue) is seriously outnumbered, and with only one chance to save the lake and her family from totally being devoured, she must risk everything to destroy the aquatic carnivores herself.

In addition to stars mentioned above, the cast also includes Adam Scott, Ving Rhames, Richard Dreyfuss, Dina Meyer and Jerry O’Connell.

The movie stars the women I wanted to marry when I was growing up, Elizabeth Shue, alongside Eli Roth, Dina Meyer, Jerry O’Connell, Christopher Lloyd, Richard Dreyfuss, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott, Kelly Brook and is directed by Alexandre Aja. In fact, is this the first time that Lloyd and Shue have reunited since Back to the Future III?

If you missed the trailer which was released a month or 2 ago, you can check it out here.

From director Alexandre Aja (The Hills Have Eyes) comes the new action thriller PIRANHA. Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for Spring Break, a riot of sun and drunken fun. But this year, there’s something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers; A new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man—eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor—toothed residents. The films stars Jessica Szohr (Gossip Girl), Steve McQueen (The Vampire Diaries), Elisabeth Shue, Jerry O’Connell, Ving Rhames, Adam Scott, Richard Dreyfuss and Christopher Lloyd.

It seems that Yahoo have been smashing out all the content that we’ve been posting over the last couple of days. Yesterday they posted the first image of Chris Hemsworth dressed as Thor, then a new poster from Tron Legacy and now they have the new full length trailer for Piranha 3 directed by Alexandre Aja.

Piranha has a pretty good cast of Hollywood has-beens but a lot of them are still legends in my mind. Elizabeth Shue reappears after a while away from the big screen, Christopher Lloyd pops up alongside Richard Dreyfuss, Ving Rhames and Eli Roth. It really is an eclectic cast in a movie that looks like it’s going to be rather average. The CGI on the fish looks pretty ropey from the trailer but i guess we’ll have to wait and see what the finished product looks like.

All that said, will i go and see it?! Heck yeah!!! Piranha 3d is released in the UK 20th August and the US 27th so it looks like we get another film before them over there again! YAY!

Check out the new trailer below and let us know what you think in the comments section below.

Synopsis: Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for Spring Break, a riot of sun and drunken fun. But this year, there’s something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers; A new type of terror is about to be cut loose on Lake Victoria. After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area’s new razor-toothed residents.

I am looking forward to the home theatre release of the original a lot more than I am the theatrical release of the remake.

Predictably this new Piranha film, directed by Alexandre Aja, is being released theatrically in 3D. Although it has hard to have high hopes for this remake the film looks truly terrible based on the teaser below. Although I am a fan of schlocky B movies I wonder if Piranha 3-D actually has anything new or interesting to offer. Check out the teaser and see what you think.

Released in the UK on the 20th of August the synopsis and UK teaser are embedded below.

Synopsis: In Lake Victoria Arizona, a tremor causes the lake’s floor to open, setting free scores of prehistoric piranhas… Theyre back! Every year the population of sleepy Lake Victoria explodes from 5,000 to 50,000 for a single, wild weekend – the 4th of July, a riot of sun, drunken fun and sex-crazed mayhem. But this year, there’s something more to worry about than hangovers and complaints from local old timers. Lake Victoria sits in the crater formed by a prehistoric volcanic eruption, and when earth tremors tear open a crack in the lake floor, all hell breaks through. Piranhas – a million ravenous, razor-toothed monsters, unchanged since the dawn of time. Unstoppable killing machines acting blindly under one primeval impulse: to hunt down anything that moves and strip it to the raw, bleeding bone. In seconds.

It’s directed by Tim Blake Nelson and also stars another Edward Norton, Susan Sarandon, Keri Russell and Richard Dreyfuss. The movie screened at the Toronto Film Festival and everyone is raving about it with apparently an awesome performance from both sets of Edward Nortons!

It’s scheduled for release in the US 2nd April. Doesn’t look like we have a release date yet but we’ll keep you posted. Check out the trailer embedded below or head over to Apple who debuted the trailer. I’m very much looking forward to this one.

Synopsis: When Ivy League classics professor Bill Kincaid receives news of the murder of his estranged identical twin brother, Brady (both played by two-time Academy Award® nominee Edward Norton), in a pot deal gone bad, he leaves the world of Northeastern academia to travel back to his home state of Oklahoma. Upon arrival, he finds that reports of his brother’s death are greatly exaggerated, and he’s soon caught up in the dangerous and unpredictable world of drug commerce in the backwaters of the Southwest. In the process, he reconnects with his eccentric mother (Academy Award® winner Susan Sarandon), meets a wise and educated young woman who has bypassed academia in favor of the gentler rhythms of life (Keri Russell), and unwittingly helps his troubled brother settle a score with a pernicious drug lord (Academy Award® winner Richard Dreyfuss) who uses Tulsa, Oklahoma’s small Jewish community for cover. Leaves of Grass follows a twisting narrative path merging crime drama, drug comedy, classical philosophy and sudden violence in pursuit of answering one of humanity’s oldest questions: What does it truly mean to live a happy and constructive life?

That changed over the weekend when I saw the trailer for Piranha 3d. Although it had the style of Deep Blu Sea or Mega Shark vs. Giant Octopus, it still reeled me in (see what I did there?!) and has me actually wanting to see it!

Piranha 3D is directed by Alexandre Aja and has a pretty impressive cast which includes Adam Scott, Christopher Lloyd, Ving Rhames, Dina Meyer, Richard Dreyfuss and the woman I wanted to be my girlfriend when I was 10, Elisabeth Shue! In fact, could this be the first time that Shue and Lloyd have been reunited since Back to the Future?! You heard it here first folks…. unless I’m wrong!
