ABC are planning on making a US version of one of the greatest British TV series of all time, Only Fools and Horses. The show played here in the UK from 1981 to 2003 and is possibly my favourite TV show. It has so many classic scenes (some of which I’ve placed below this article for you to watch) and it will be very interesting to see how the show is modified for US audiences.

I’d be quite against this but after recently becoming addicted to the US version of The Office, I have faith that the conversion can be done in a successful manner but time will tell. According to the BBC who have the report, ABC will make a pilot of the show with a view to then continue with a full series if it goes down well.

The BBC (who aired the original show) tell us that in 1996, 24m people tuned into the Christmas special making it one of the most-watched programmes in British TV history! David Jason and Nicholas Lyndhurst played the two wheeler-dealer brothers who live in a council estate in Peckham, South London and do whatever they can to make a quick buck wherever they can! According to ABC the same formula will be used as two brothers..:

“concoct outrageous, morally questionable get-rich-quick schemes in their quest to become millionaires”.

Still not sure what I think of this news but like I say, I’m really interested to see what they do with it.

What the heck is going on here I hear you ask?! Well, I am wondering the same thing but according to The Guardian Channel 4 will be remaking the classic animation The Snowman based on the Raymond Briggs story that we’ve all seen on our screens for the last 30 years! This new version will also NOT feature the classic song, Walking in the Air.

According to the story:

The updated version will feature new elements, with the Snowman, a new little boy, and an extra character, a snow dog, flying over international landmarks, including the London Eye, rather than Brighton pier and the Pavilion, as in the original.

They’ve obviously gone nuts! The new version will use ‘traditional techniques’ and ‘many of the original creative’ team which I guess is a relief but do we need a new Snowman? Not really! The new version will cost around £2m to make and will be released to celebrate Channel 4′s 30th Birthday. I didn’t know I was a year old than Channel 4!

You thoughts on this in the comments below please! I’m off to go and watch the original and try to wipe this news from my mind!

Just when time-travelling film concepts seem to have been done to death, along comes something new to breathe fresh life once again. In the original, Hector (Karra Elejalde) accidentally climbs into a time machine and travels back a short amount of time, getting caught up with different versions of himself, before tying himself up in all manner of knots trying to put everything back again.

The film is played dead straight, low-fi and is utterly compelling. It is also not in English, meaning it would only be a matter of time before Hollywood got its grubby little mitts on it. Whilst that is normally the cue for everyone to get cross, at least some pretty heavyweight talent is trying to get on board this one. Steve Zaillian, writer of Schindler’s List, Moneyball, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and American Gangster and director of A Civil Action and All The King’s Men, is considering directing the English-language remake, having been on board in a producer capacity for some time.

Zaillian has too brief a track record as director for us to have much of an idea of what sort of authorial stamp he might put on the remake and it remains to be seen what input he might have into the screenplay, though given his success as a writer it seems inconceivable that he wouldn’t at least have a pass at it.

We’ll let you know how this one develops. In the meantime, check out the trailer for the original below (which makes too much of the sci-fi elements and not nearly enough of the dramatic heft) and make a point of seeing the film as soon as you can.

Will Smith was once rumoured to be circling the role of protagonist in Spike Lee’s Oldboy remake, but that part seems to now be with Josh Brolin. Colin Firth had been much-mooted to take on the role of the villain of the piece (though it would be disheartening in the extreme to see the shades of grey of the imperious Korean original reduced by Hollywood to such conventional character delineations), however he is now quite literally out of the picture.

Although the quality of the end product is more important than any one casting decision, this is something of a shame. Setting Firth’s more refined characteristics against Brolin’s more rugged qualities would have been fascinating, but we are only left now with what might have been.

There is no news yet of who might replace Firth, though Spike will have to get his skates on if that rumoured early-2012 shooting window is to be maintained. It is far too early to describe this hiccup as in any way indicative of production troubles, since every production has its hurdles to overcome on its way to the screen. A new antagonist will need to be found and no doubt a suitable one can and will be. As soon as we hear who it is, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, feel free to let us know below who your hot favourite would be.

It’s Hollywood yet again admitting defeat when it comes to original ideas as we hear news that Alcon is to remake 1991 movie Point Break directed by Kathryn Bigelow and starring Patrick Swayze and Keanu Reeves. I guess there is no way you can go wrong with an FBI agent who goes undercover as a surfer dude to trap a gang of gangsters who dress up as former presidents can you?! I guess Alcon don’t think so.

According to the news, ‘the new version is is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminalring, but plot points beyond that have not been revealed by the filmmakers.’

What do we think, shall we boycott it?! I guess more info as we get it but in the meantime, here’s the press release from Deadline:

LOS ANGELES, CA., SEPTEMBER 12, 2011 – Financing and production company Alcon Entertainment is set to remake the 1991 action-thriller POINT BREAK as a feature film for release by Warner Bros, its home studio, it was announced by Alcon co-founders and co-CEO’s Broderick Johnsonand Andrew Kosove. The Alcon principals secured rights to the project the week of the original film’s 20th anniversary from RGM Media, John McMurrick and Chris Taylor. Kosove and Johnson will produce along with Michael DeLuca, John Baldecchi, Chris Taylor and Kurt Wimmer who also wrote the screenplay (“Salt,” “Law Abiding Citizen,” upcoming “Total Recall”). RGM Media principal Devesh Chetty and investor John McMurrick, Chairman ofMarloss Entertainment, will serve as Executive Producers. The film is being fast tracked, with the filmmakers set to take theproject out to directors soon.

The new version is set in the world of international extreme sports, and like the original involves an undercover FBI agent infiltrating a criminalring, but plot points beyond that have not been revealed by the filmmakers. State Johnson and Kosove: “Who doesn’t love the Kathryn Bigelow original and its pure heart-pounding action and thrills? Kurt’s take infuses the story and characters with new twists and settings.” Adds DeLuca “’Point Break’ wasn’t just a film, it was a Zen meditation on testosterone fuelled action and manhood in the late 20th century and we hope to create the same for the young 21st!” In addition to the feature rights, Alcon has also secured television and gaming rights to POINT BREAK. The Bigelow original, starring Keanu Reeves, Patrick Swayze and GaryBusey, was produced by Largo Entertainment and released by Fox.

Truth be told, though it’s probably movie geek blasphemy, when it comes down to it I’m more of a fan of Cody’s than I am of The Evil Dead series but I’m well aware that in bringing back the original producers and star (Sam Raimi, Rob Tapert and Bruce Campbell) remakers Ghost House Pictures are looking to win over the all important fan base. Releasing a statement of intent Raimi, Tapert and Campbell courted their rabid fans,

We are committed to making this movie and are inspired by the enduring popularity and enthusiasm for the ‘Evil Dead’ series…We can’t wait to scare a new generation of moviegoers using filmmaking techniques that were not available to us thirty years ago as well as Fede bringing a fresh eye to the film’s original elements.

Fede in this case is one Fede Alvarez, the Uruguayan who uploaded his now famous short film Ataque de Pánico (Panic Attack) up to Youtube where Hollywood took notice. Click here to see the short, and by way of a comparison we’ve also thrown in Neill Blomkamp’s calling card for District 9, Alive in Joburg.

News of Cody’s involvement may not be met with such enthuisasm but for my money she’ll bring a decent perspective to the proceedings, and it’s the first piece of news related to this story that’s captured my attention. Jennifer’s Body is perhaps the closest comparative project the writer has worked on, and she was also involved in the production of a big screen adaptation of S. G. Browne’s Breathers: A Zombie’s Lament. It was only a few short weeks ago that we learned of her directorial debut, Lamb of God, which we’re hoping to hear more about in the near future.

Responding to the news Cody herself tweeted the following,

Count me in, sign me up, scare me shirtless.

It ran for 14 seasons which just shows how popular the show was. The show could do anything including resurrecting one of the key characters after they’d died! Amazing!

Obviously real-life bank balances have reduced somewhat in that time as many of the original cast are back for the re-birth of the famous show which is set to hit Summer, 2012. TNT have released the first teaser trailer for the series which sees Larry Hagman, Patrick Duffy and Linda Gray all back as JR Ewing, Bobby Ewing and Sue Ellen Ewing but this time it’s all about their kids! As usual, Booy doesnt want to see money taking over the family but let’s face it, we all love it!

Josh Henderson, Jesse Metcalfe, Jordana Brewster, Julie Gonzalo and Brenda Strong all form part of the new modern cast. I guess time will tell if the show becomes as popilar as the original show.

Let us know what you think in the comments section below. Should the show come back or should it be left alone to revel in classic TV gold?

I still can’t listen to the theme tune without singing these words that I learnt in my school playground way back when. I invite you to sing along with me!

‘He’s rich, he’s rich, his wife is a bitch, he drives a white sports carrrrr… He lives in a palace in the middle of Dallas and he calls himself JR!’

Now, according to Reuters, Bradley Cooper is in negotiations to star as Eric Draven, a role previously played by the late Brandon Lee, who died in a freak accident during production of the film. With this news comes even MORE skepticism as we ask ourselves, can someone who has only played light roles as the leader-of-the-pack in comedies, or the heartthrob in romatic films, truly embody the dark and brooding character set on a revenge warpath that is Eric Draven? Spanish director Fresnadillo seems to think so, after a meeting in Spain with Cooper to discuss the film’s vision appeared to have gone very well for Cooper.

The film will stick with the same premise of a brutally murdered rock musician who is revived from the dead to avenge his own, and his fiancee’s death. Fresnadillo’s 28 Weeks Later, although a bit weaker than 28 Days Later, still triumphed as a solid film with a decent reception. On board to write the script is Stephen Norrington who only appears to have written 2 seemingly B-Movies in his career, along with original writer of The Crow comic-book series, James O’Barr.

I’d say the frame is there, now lets see if Bradley Cooper can pull through in a role that will either solidify his acting career, or doom him to a short career of type-casting and punch-lines best used at booze-filled frat parties.

The 1955 Hitchcock thriller is perhaps not as revered as Psycho, Vertigo or Rear Window but it is a stylish, witty affair and the chemistry between Grace Kelly and Cary Grant is an absolute joy. It is a beautifully crafted film, a timepiece of a post-war, pre-60s Europe and it is the next film to place its head on the remake block.

The original works primarily because the thriller aspect, former thief John Robie (a dapper Grant) tries to catch a mysterious burglar who apes his criminal style while fending off the police, his former Resistance pals and the advances of Jessie Royce Landis who is combing the French Riviera to find a suitor for her daughter (Grace Kelly), is secondary to the emerging and playfully duplicitous love affair between its two leads.

Why am I waxing lyrical about this treasured film now? The title of the post gives it away somewhat but to recap: Latino Review (via The Playlist) spoke to screenwriter Josh Stolberg, who said on the Paramounted revival:

I wrote, with Bobby [Florsheim], a remake of ‘To Catch a Thief’ for Paramount. Neal Moritz is producing, and it’s exciting because it’s one of my favourite Hitchcock movies and it was fun to come at it from a different angle – make it a little bit more modern and ‘gadgety.’ It’s the first script that I’ve ever written that [encompasses] a lot of heists and action sequences and.. it was a blast!

I’m really excited. We just turned in the script to the studio a couple of months ago and they’re working on casting now. It takes place in Santarini…it’s a travelogue of the most amazing places on Earth…it’s gonna be a fun, fun ride I think.

If there’s one thing the Hitchcock film was missing it was gadgets. Just like Vertigo was missing Clowns or Psycho was missing Colour. Mildly indignant feelings aside I can see a Greek set thrill ride in the vein of The Tourist, or a brighter touchstone may be the 1999 John McTiernan remake of The Thomas Crown Affair. Good luck finding leads to match Kelly and Grant.

Open minds are being prepared to cope with the continuing saga, and until the Blu-ray of the Hitchcock classic comes out I’d suggest you stop on over at the always superb Clothes on Film for their take on the equation Grace Kelly + Clothes = stylistic awesomeness.

Given its lucrative past, it stands to reason that Warner Bros would be keen to see what more they could extract from the Lethal Weapon cash cow. Shane Black (who wrote the script for the original and has more recently excelled with Kiss Kiss Bang Bang) had drafted a treatment for LW5, using the original cast, however conflicting schedules had been problematic to overcome and Mel Gibson’s public profile has been deteriorating with each successive revelation regarding his private life.

Warner’s “new idea” (if something as predictable and derivative as a reboot can ever be so-called) is to take a fresh stab at the franchise and accordingly Will Beall has been brought in by them and Joel Silver to write a fresh script, relaunching the series with a new cast. Beall is a former Los Angeles police officer who wrote the novel L.A. Rex. His reputation as a screenwriter is on the rise on account of his script Gangster Squad, a period crime drama that you can read about here.

Apparently, Beall has pitched an idea that would retain the original’s “hard-R” tone, but it seems to me that this misses the point. Although Lethal Weapon itself is over 20 years old, the franchise itself continued until relatively recently and the original simply does not call for a remake, reboot or anything similar. It stands as one of the finest action films of the 80′s (or any other decade for that matter) and the idea to remake it seems to smack of nothing more or less than a dearth of new ideas. It seems that remakes are in and of themselves problematic enough, without WB picking a film so singularly lacking any clear need of being remade. Just because Speed, Die Hard, Face/Off or ConAir are more than five minutes old, does not mark them out as remake fodder.

To paraphrase Dr Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park, “your producers were so preoccupied with whether or not they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” I for one would prefer to see something new, rather than something old being warmed over. Having said that, I am equally happy to be proved wrong and if WB come up with a magnificent script, a fitting director and a worthy film that stands shoulder to shoulder with the original, great. But I’m not holding my breath.

What do you think? Fed up with unnecessary remakes? Love Lethal Weapon? Don’t? Let us know below.

Shaw Moore (played by John Lithgow in the original). The image comes to us via director Craig Brewer’s twitter, and most likely the editing room for the film as well.

Unfortunately for me, Footloose is one of those films that I have yet to watch. As upsetting as it is it just doesn’t remain top of mind with me and everytime I hear about this remake I kick myself for not having seen it yet, especially since Kevin Bacon is in it.

The film stars Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough in the lead roles with Andie MacDowell and Ray McKinnon in supporting roles. The comedy/musical remake is expected to to hit theaters on October 14th of this year. Now check out the pissed off Quaid below, a man I undoubtedly believe will play a good killjoy (despite the fact I haven’t seen Lithgow’s performance).

The Girl Who Kicked The Hornet’s Nest is an excellent film and you really should see it but there are several reasons why the idea of doing so may not yet have crossed your mind.

As you’re probably already aware it’s based on the final book of the late Stieg Larsson’s Millennium Trilogy which I know has become quite a significant literary landmark for the simple reason that firstly my wife read them all in quick succession and secondly I see posters at stations in London describing assorted new books that I’ve never heard of as being by “The next Stieg Larsson”.

As someone who has a lifelong aversion to hype the whole thing has quite consciously passed me by because I’ve lived through the reading fads of commuters before, the recent origins of which can probably be traced back to the time where every other person on the train seemed to be reading “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin” before moving on to “Bridget Jones’s Diary”, and so on.

So bearing in mind that “Go against the flow” could, quite arguably, be my motto it fell to me, as someone who’s neither read the Millennium books or seen the previous films, to review this one. The challenge was going to be whether I could understand what the film was about without that background or whether would it be like trying to watch the latest Harry Potter film without having ever reading the books or seeing the films? In Swedish.

Ah yes. You might have read my recent report here on HeyUGuys about the comments made by Niels Arden Oplev against the Hollywoodisation of the first film, “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”, which he directed and I would paraphrase his comments as “Why do you need a remake in English when you have an original in Swedish with fabulous Swedish actors such as Noomi Rapace?”. Good point. Stick with me and I’ll get to it. I really will.

Before then I need to provide some spoilers so be warned. The film starts with some brief and bloody flashbacks to get you up to speed with the current situation and then introduces the Terminator-esque unstoppable hitman Niedermann (Micke Spreitz). Actually scratch that analogy as he more closely reminds me of a blonde-haired take on Javier Bardem’s character in “No Country For Old Men”. The action moves quickly on and the first half of the film revolves around the trilogy’s main character, Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace), in hospital recovering from the events shown in the flashbacks and the second half is about her subsequent trial and its momentous outcome. All this time Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) is working in the background to establish the truth behind the circumstances in which Lisbeth found herself and the opposition he finds from those with vested interests who have worked hard to conceal it.

Noomi Rapace does do a fabulous job as Lisbeth Salander and has the ability to communicate so much through both her words and, more often, her sullen silence. Her transformation for the courtroom scenes is absolutely startling and serves to express the iron will of her character that has mostly been kept in check while in hospital. Although she is the main character of the trilogy the biggest character in this movie, for me at least, is Mikael Blomkvist who doggedly sticks to his task, perhaps you could say he even wears it as more of a calling, and does everything within his power to expose the injustice that has been perpetrated against Lisbeth. For those who, like me, had no idea of, or preconceptions about, the characters I’d say that the nearest comparison would be “Inspector Morse meets Wallander” and although he isn’t a policeman he has that kind of rigour and purpose about him that we’d like to think that all police should have mixed with a sense of aloneness that suits someone who works for a publication such as the one depicted in the film.

It’s a great film of good against evil, about justice prevailing over injustice, about the underdogs against the machine and if you have any liking for that sort of film then this is for and you please go out and see it in the cinema rather than opting for the small screen experience, for reasons you’ll find explained in a couple of paragraphs time.

Now for the tricky bit. It is, as I’ve mentioned before, in Swedish and some of you may have an issue with that. Please, whatever you do don’t get hung up on it being in Swedish with English subtitles as the experience it gives you is far more than you can imagine. If English is your first, and perhaps only, language and you live and/or work in a primarily English-speaking environment the prospect of watching a subtitled film may confuse you. You might be thinking “If it’s that good why isn’t it in English?” or “I’ll wait for the Hollywood version” but my opinion is that if you really want to enter into and experience the full “difference” of the world depicted in the books and the people who live in it then to my mind the only way you can do that is to see the original Swedish. Sorry, but it is.

If you haven’t already headbutted your computer in the hope of doing me some serious injury after that last statement then let me explain it. In the cinema there was laughter, there were gasps and even cheers as the film went on because the subtitles combined with the action on the screen really brought out the tension of the story and the applause from the audience at the end cemented my view that this is a film that has really been fabulously well done. Language really is no barrier to a great film.

I can’t speak of it as a book to film translation or even how it fits into the trilogy of films but as a work in itself I’m happy to give it my seal of approval. And at the very least you’ll learn the Swedish for “Thank you”.

According to Deadline, it seems that Paul Haggis, along with CBS Films, will be remaking one of my favorite prison films, Celda 211 (Cell 211), a Spanish prison drama that won multiple awards at the 2009 Goya Awards in Spain.

This news upsets me because I don’t want to see Hollywood ruin another great film by remaking it. But then again, Paul Haggis is a great director and an even better writer, and he is trying to do both! So right now I’m feeling a bit perplexed with this news because I watched it earlier this year and want people to see the Spanish version before any America version…but that’s just me.

Anyway, Haggis will be producing the movie under his Hwy 61 label in hopes of keeping expectations and the quality of the film high. Paul Haggis has written films like Letters from Iwo Jima and has directed Crash and the upcoming, The Next Three Days, so like I said he has some serious credibility.

Deadline sums up the plot to Daniel Monzon’s film rather well:

A newly hired prison guard wants to make a good impression on his bosses, and he leaves behind his pregnant wife and comes in a day early to get a tour of the facility. When a brutal prison riot breaks out, he is knocked unconscious and when he awakens, the guard is forced to assume the role of a prisoner alongside the most dangerous killers alive. He tries to defuse the uprising and escape before the prisoners realize who he really is.

In case you haven’t seen the film, here is the trailer to give you a bit of insight and to understand the tone and feel of the film.

Glee creator Ryan Murphy is no stranger to The Rocky Horror Show. Having just finished work on an episode of his hit show that pays homage to the classic, putting the ‘time warp’ in the capable hands of William McKinley High School’s Glee Club, Murphy has been approached by Fox 2000 regarding a remake of the cult hit (via Deadline).

The Rocky Horror Show – which still enjoys sell-out screenings thirty-five years after its initial release – has grossed north of £100 million to date, making it the longest running theatrical release of all time and ripe for a re-imagining. Responsible for launching Tim Curry, Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick to fame, the musical has quite the legacy.

Murphy, whose Eat Pray Love is still finding an audience in cinemas, is already committed to an adaptation of Larry Kramer’s The Normal Heart and an untitled romantic comedy for Sony Pictures Entertainment – for which he was paid $5 million to write and direct – that will reunite him with Julia Roberts.

Should Murphy take The Rocky Horror Show under his experienced wing, the phenomenon may well be in good hands. To be certain, however, we will have to wait until October 26th when the relevant episode of Glee jumps to the left, then takes a step to the right etc.

So readers, let’s do the time warp again?!

While it was all but confirmed that the new Barbarian flick would be in 3D, the new poster for the film has made it very clear that it will, in fact, be in 3D.

Collider recently received the poster and while the image is the same, the poster has added the names of the stars and that the film will be in 3D.

In my opinion, the poster is a bit too crowded because, let’s be honest here, do we really need all the names of a predominantly mediocre cast? The poster is too crowded and inconsistent and I hope, for the films sake, that they release a new one soon to replace that new mess of marketing material.

Am I alone on this one?

Kobayashi’s film tells the story of Hanshiro Tsugumo (Tatsuya Nakadai) and is a tale told in part through flashbacks, as the fate of Tsugumo’s son-in-law is revealed and the common theme of revenge rises to the surface. Although Harakiri is an Edo period jidai-geki, Kobayashi infuses the film with contemporary (to the sixties) allegory.

There is sparse information about Miike’s remake apart from the casting news that Kabuki actor Ebizo Ichikawa will play the Tsugumo part and that the film will be in 3D. The film begins shooting in October and will be released next year.

Those that don’t know of the film, it’s about three young kids you find a hole in their garden and accidentally open a gateway to the domain of demonic “Old Gods” who once ruled the universe. The kids were terrorised by small little demons (animated by excellent stop motion) a huge demon god and also by one of the scariest movie creations (from my childhood) in the myth come true ‘The Workman’, it was a brilliant, scary and mostly forgotten movie from the 80′s. Check out trailer below.

Alex Winter gave an interesting interview to screenread.de, found here, about the remake and makes some nice points about 3D use and horror films as well as sharing some nice storyboards for the film which appears to be staying close to the original movie that looks set to begin filming sometime this year and having a release date for Autumn 2011.

The film was classic 80′s horror and was also one of the first horror movies me and Jon watched together many years ago that still holds strong memories. We will definitely be looking forward to it, what are your thoughts?

This sci-fi action flick stars Karl Urban in the title role, Olivia Thirlby as Cassandra and Pete Travis in the director’s chair.

IM GLOBAL, one of the producers of the film, has provided a synopsis for the adaptation of the famous British comic series:

DREDD takes us to the wild streets of Mega City One, the lone oasis of quasi-civilization on Cursed Earth. Judge Dredd (Karl Urban) is the most feared of elite Street Judges, with the power to enforce the law, sentence offenders and execute them on the spot – if necessary. The endlessly inventive mind of writer Alex Garland and the frenetic vision of director Peter Travis bring DREDD to life as a futuristic neo-noir action film that returns the celebrated character to the dark, visceral incarnation from John Wagner and Carlos Ezquerra’s revered comic strip.
