Here in the UK we have to wait until the 21st of October to see Lynne Ramsay’s adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s powerful book We Need to Talk About Kevin and today sees the launch of a new trailer out today.

Eagle eyed Bleeding Cool happened upon the new trailer and poster today and shared it with the world, and thank goodness they did because this is a fine trailer for what looks to be a challenging film.

If you’ve not already seen the three clips we posted a while ago they are worth viewing after the trailer as they give a good impression of what’s to come, and the notion Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly under the directorial hand of Lynne Ramsay is enticing.

The trailer is below and a shiny new poster follows,

The Tree of Life was the one to watch at Cannes this year and after winning the Palme d’Or, it became even more so.

The Tree of Life is Malick’s fifth feature-length movie in the last 40 years yet he’s still a director that everyone wants to work with as Ross explains in the video below. His next project will star Ben Affleck and Rachel Weisz . The Tree of Life stars Brad Pitt , Sean Penn and Jessica Chastain and we hope will be released later this year (trailer here).

This video we’re presenting on an silver internet platter is a realtively low res look at a film whose visual splendour demands as a big a screen as you can find, but it’s a diverting talking-head Making Of clip, with footage and the main members of the cast and crew talking Trees, Life and the mercurial Malick.

Let the clicking commence,

Deadline are reporting that Terrence Malick’s The Tree of Life, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes last month, the highest award given at Cannes, has finally got its UK release date. Mark your calendars for 8th July, everybody. It’s going to be a great day.

Malick’s latest film, the first he’s made in six years, was originally to be released here at the start of May, prior to Cannes. However, doing so would have disqualified it for Cannes, and its release was then delayed. Until now.

The film, starring Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, and Jessica Chastain, has already had a limited release in the States, and made $8m. of its $32m. budget, which is very impressive for a limited release. The States will be getting the film on a wide release the same day as us, so we can all look forward to that day on both sides of the Atlantic.

So far, The Tree of Life has received highly commendable reviews from the majority of its viewers, and whilst it is of course too early to say anything for sure, it could well be a contender for next year’s Academy Awards.

After going six years without releasing anything, Malick has already filmed his next project, which is as-yet-untitled, and will star Rachel McAdams, Rachel Weisz, Ben Affleck, Javier Bardem, and Olga Kurylenko, to name but a few, and should get its release next year. Until then, we can look forward to 8th July, when we get to see (and not just hear, like in Megamind) the excellent Brad Pitt on the screen for the first time since Inglourious Basterds in 2009.
The film received mixed notices from a number of critics at the festival, but the 67-year-olde filmmaker has managed to wow the jury (led by Robert De Niro) and scoop this much-coveted prize.

An American audience will be able to judge for themselves if the film is a deserving recipient of the award when it gets released in the US at the end of the month. A UK date for the film is still up in the air, although you may recall there was talk of it coming to screens over here at the beginning of May until distributors Icon Film pulled it.

We were invited as part of the Jacques d’Azur short film where Stella have created a fictional character to become the ‘King of Cannes’. Jacques is famous for being the man that all woman want to be with and who all men want to be. Throughout the process which has now been going on for a few months, they have picked a member of the public through an audition process to become Jacques and the movie which has now been filmed will be premiering at Cannes this coming weekend.

To coincide with the project, Stella constructed Jacques d’Azur’s house on the beach opposite the Carlton Hotel which was the base for our stay in the beautiful French Riviera. I had no idea what to expect when we arrived at the resort. I’d seen photos obviously of the famous Palais red carpet steps and the Carlton Hotel which was always the centrepiece for advertising but seeing it in person was a whole different matter. Arriving at the hotel surrounded by top of the range Mercede, Ferrari, Bentley, Rolls Royce, Maybach, Lamborghini etc etc etc was rather surreal but something that we’d soon get used to as pretty much every car which drove past was on of the above apart from the official Renault’s employed for the event which were some new type of electric model.

Pretty much as soon as we arrived, we were given a Stella (of course!) and a rather fancy buffet lunch and it wasnt long before we noticed that our table was overlooking another occupied by Rob Lowe. This would be the beginning of our celebrity spotting for the next few days. It wasn’t long before we had to get ready to head off to our first premiere which was French movie, Polisse (in competition) which deals with the rather difficult subject looking at the French Child Protection Unit. Craig is currently writing his review as I type so you’ll be able to check that out in due course.

Before heading off to the premiere, we were invited back down to Jacques house on the beach dressed in our finest before heading off and also to be told that a certain a-lister would be coming down to get a perfectly poured Stella! That a-lister has the name Robert De Niro! We were told not to take any photos of the legendary actor but I completely flouted that rule and took this rather rubbish photo from 10 feet away but at least it proves I have been in the same room as the man! What a legend!

Unfortunately we were a little too late to walk the red carpet before the premiere but going into the Palais was spectacular. The cinema is simply amazing with state of the art sound and the screen is a monster. Looking up the stats, it only holds 820 people but I think that’s because the seats in there are pretty much the biggest and most comfortable I’ve ever sat in at a cinema! Seats are always very important to me! Gotta be comfy! That evening, we then went back to Chez Jacques for the the Little White Lies party where loads of UK people were hanging out and it was great to meet new people and get to know some of those that I’ve met before even better. It’s all about the networking!

The following day I think the main topic of the day was food. I don’t think an hour went past where we didn’t get to eat some spectacular meal! I love the branded puddings! Following an amazing breakfast, Craig and I went along to our second screening for an Israeli movie called, Hearat Shulayim which is also in competition to win the Palme d’Or. It tells the story of an Israeli scholar who has spent 30 years studying the Talmud who’s life isn’t going quite to plan while his son who is in the same line of work is doing rather better and the rivalry between them. Again, Craig will be providing a review of this one for your viewing pleasure. I found it rather intriguing and did enjoy it although found it a little slow in places. He’ll go into far more depth than that (hopefully!).

The highlight of the weekend however probably has to fall to the Saturday night when we attended the Kanye West private party hosted by Red Granite Pictures on the Stella beach location. Along with the members of our party, those in attendance included Jamie Foxx, Leonardo DiCaprio, John Hamm, Bradley Cooper, Fisher Stevens and Rosario Dawson. You may have already read my post on the evening but if not, you can find out much more about it here along with watching the video of the moment when Jamie Foxx jumped on stage to perform Gold Digger with Kanye West! It was rather awesome and is an evening I will never forget!

I always say on these press trips that although the experience is wonderful, the best part for me is meeting new people who love what they do as much as I do. I was really only there for one full day but in that time I met so many amazing people. I just thought I’d give them a big-up here so that you can get following them on twitter if you’re not already. Lu (Whos Jack Magazine), Laura (Whos Jack Magazine) Michael (Asylum) Ann, Ed (freelance photographer), Ed (MSN Movies), Lucy (MSN Celeb), Sarah (MovieFone). They’re all top chaps so make sure you check out their publications and follow them on twitter. You can see the entire motley crew in this photo here.

Our trip to Cannes was fantastic but far too short and we’re already planning next year so that we can be there for the entire two week period as being back in the UK and watching all the tweets from Cannes is far too difficult! Thanks to much to Stella Artois for sending us over and keep your eyes peeled on HeyUGuys for more from Jaques d’Azur over the next few days and when the movie premieres at the festival on Saturday.

We saw a terribly interesting Visual FX breakdown yesterday and there’s a new clip out today which won’t exactly make your heart sing as much as it weigh it down into your boots, and yet what else did we expect from Von Trier and a film he called Melancholia?

What this does show is Kirsten Dunst and Charlotte Gainsbourg discuss earthy matters and those lucky enough to find themselves under the sun at Cannes can catch this one when it debuts there, the rest of us have a few more months until the beautiful end of the world.

Collider pointed us to the clip. Thanks for that.

Here’s the clip, it’s not one to stick on loop if you know what I mean?
Today we have more from the film, again from Poland as one of the effects houses working on the film have placed a show reel online.

When Von Trier announced he was following his controversial 2009 film Antichrist was a serious sci-fi pre-apocalypse drama our interest was piqued, then came the casting – Kirsten Dunst, Keifer Sutherland, John Hurt, Charlotte Rampling – and then the trailer. A slow, deliberate and terrifying succession of images hinted at the story Von Trier is telling to the end of the world with one shot of the night sky with the Moon and the new planet Melancholia looming overhead standing out in particular.

In this Making Of video Platige Image hint at the work they’ve done for the film, and it’s a fascinating look at the creation of the unique look of the film.

If you’re in Cannes then you’re in for a treat, the rest of us will have to wait until September.

Certainly the nature of the novel and its subject matter will make for an intense film, and Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly have the uneviable task of examining their broken family life following their son’s role in a high-school massacre. The clips don’t suggest an easy watch and the interplay glimpsed here is thick with subdued emotions.

We’ve seen a few stills from the production already but now three short clips have surfaced and are the perfect introduction to the film which won’t see a UK cinema release until the 2nd of September.

The poster that will be appearing in Poland doesn’t exactly confer the appropriate respect to Kirsten Dunst’s beleaguered Bride by plastering words across her face in the popular style. The words translate as “This is going to be a beautiful end to the world” which manages to be both aesthetically promising and depressing as hell. Can’t wait.

Here it is poster fiends,

His new film, which he wrote and directed, is titled “The tree of life” and will focus on the story of a family in the 1950s.

The Playlist has posted stills from the movie (previously released on Tumblr by the Two Ways Through Life site), and while they look poetic, enigmatic and elusive, perfectly in keeping with Malick’s style (which you can either love or hate, just like Marmite) we are still a bit puzzled as to why exactly do they feature a dinosaur…

Puzzlement does help to build anticipation –or even simple raw curiosity. Also, the cast includes Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. Interested audiences will have to try and catch it quick however, because, after premiering at the Cannes Festival, the film will open only on limited release.

Whether you’re a fully-fledged cineaste, or just possess a casual interest, there’s something for anyone with our alternative A-Z of cinema, which starts today and runs through the week.

If you’ve ever wondered just what it is an Executive Producer does, or maybe if you’ve heard the ambient sounds of Tangerine Dream in an 80’s film favourite without knowing who you were listening to, this is the list for you!

Here are the letters K-O…

King Vidor (1894 – 1982) was an American film director, producer and screenwriter whose career spanned nearly seven decades. He resides in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest career of any film director (it began in 1913 and ending in 1980). In 1979 he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award, having been nominated five previous times for a Best Director Oscar.

To give you an idea of how young cinema was when a teenage Vidor first caught a glimpse of his future, it was during a visit to see his first film (A Trip to the Moon by Georges Méliès), which happens to be one of the earliest films ever made.

Vidor’s first venture into sound was 1929’s Hallelujah!, a groundbreaking film which featured an African-American cast and established the new language for sound films. He was also one of a number of famous directors at the time, to work, uncredited, on the classic The Wizard of Oz (1939).

Linda Manz (1961-) is an actress who appeared in a couple of memorable and influential cult features towards the end of the seventies. Her distinctive, androgynous look caught the attention of Terrence Malick who cast her as the young narrator in his second film (1978’s Days of Heaven), but Manz is arguably best known for her appearance in the 1979 film The Wanderers, where she played the antagonistic girlfriend of the leader of the fearsome street gang The Baldies.

In 1980, Manz starred alongside Dennis Hopper in Out of the Blue (his first directorial effort since 1971’s ill-fated The Last Movie). The film competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in that same year.

Absent from cinema screens for over a decade now, her only remaining roles post-1980 were in a handful of films towards the end of the noughties, including a small part in David Fincher’s The Game and a bigger one in Harmony Korine’s 1997 mid-west oddity Gummo.

Mumblecore is an American independent film movement which began life with the release of 2005’s Funny Ha Ha, a low-budget character piece by filmmaker Andrew Bujalski. It is primarily characterised by a modest production (often employing digital video cameras), focusing on personal relationships between twentysomethings, improvised scripts, and non-professional actors.

The name was actually coined by a sound editor on one of the early films and reflects, to some extent, the semi-improvisational, sometimes inaudible speech inflections delivered by some of the performers involved. Filmmakers in this field include Lynn Shelton, Bujalski, Mark and Jay Duplass, Aaron Katz and Joe Swanberg.

The Duplass brother scored a recent mainstream success by using many elements of Mumblecore within the studio system (Fox Searchlight) and with big name actors (John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill, Marisa Tomei and Catherine Keener) in last year’s dark comedy Cyrus. Bujalski’s third independent feature Beeswax was released last year to great acclaim and praise.

Ned Ryerson is a character from much-loved comedy Groundhog Day played by “I know the face, not sure about the name” supporting actor Stephen Tobolowsky. Ryerson the is supremely annoying insurance salesman and former high school classmate of Phil Connors (Bill Murray) whom he has the unpleasant misfortune of running into every morning as he continually relives the one day.

Tales from the set of this film have been covered a number of times in Tobolowsky’s Podcast series, The Tobolowsky Files. A jovial and erudite storyteller, the actor (who has appeared in more than 200 films and TV show throughout his career) shares both personal and industry-based stories in each instalment.

Tobolowsky was actually reunited with Murray 11 years on from ‘Groundhog’ when they both appeared in the movie version of the comic strip Garfield. Probably safe to say it wasn’t a reunion which either actor celebrate. “Bing!!!!”

Ozploitation films are a type of low-budget horror, comedy and action (sometimes combining all three genres) features which were predominant in Australia from the early 1970’s to late 80’s. Made after the introduction of the R rating in 1971, filmmakers took full advantage of the new liberal landscape, and created a number of exploitation films with distinctly antipodean sensibilities.

Mad Max is perhaps the most famous example from the New Wave era, but there were many other notable films, including Alvin Purple (a crude sex comedy featuring Animal Kingdom co-star and Oscar nominee from this year, Jacki Weaver), Razorback, Roadgames, The Man from Hong Kong, BMX Bandits (starring a teenage Nicole Kidman) and Turkey Shoot.

The term Ozploitation was first used in 2008’s revealing and often hilarious documentary on the movement, Not Quite Hollywood. Quentin Tarantino (one of the interviewees and an unsurprising vocal admirer of the films produced) coined the phrase Aussiesploitation, which documentary director Mark Hartley then shortened to Ozploitation.

Ware is perhaps best known for his 2000 graphic novel, Jimmy Corrigan, the Smartest Kid on Earth, which amongst winning many literary prizes, received The Guardian First Book Award in 2001 – the first time a graphic novel has won a major UK book award.

It’s not the first time a graphic novelist has produced artwork for a film (Daniel Clowes was behind the poster for Todd Solondz’s controversial 1998 feature Happiness) and Ware himself was also responsible for the more traditional-looking poster art for the 2007 film The Savages. The abstract approach and sometimes fractured narrative displayed in Ware’s own work would appear to be in perfect sync here with the Thai filmmaker’s esoteric vision.

On the strength of this new design in particular, here’s hoping Ware gets the opportunity to turn his immense talents to more big-screen projects in the future.

He’s been named as President of the Jury for May’s Festival de Cannes (now in its 64th year!)

The actor is no stranger to the festival circuit, having co-founded the Tribeca Film Festival (celebrates its 10th anniversary this year) and it’s spin-off, the Doha Film Festival in Qatar. He also picked up the Career Golden Lion in 1993 at the Venice Film Festival and his association with Cannes began way back in the mid-seventies when the film which established him as a major star, Taxi Driver, won the Palme d’Or at the festival.

Simon saw the film when it premiered in Cannes earlier this year, his write up is pretty fantastic so head on over here to read it and I’ll give my thoughts on the film below.

I’m a big fan of Leigh’s films and Another Year promised big, understated performances from the actors playing the central characters as they sift through the minutiae of suburban domestic life, without huge incident, but slowing revealing turbulent emotional states behind carefully constructed relationships.

Central to the film are Gerri and Tom, middle aged and settled in their home which acts as a welcoming embrace to the old friends, family and scatterbrained workmates who call on them. Leigh’s extensive rehearsal and improvisation pays off handsomely here as Ruth Sheen and Jim Broadbent are beautifully matched and provide a warm and engaging state of contentment against which the various forces crash. It is easy to be utterly convinced by them and the fervour with which people come to visit.

Not least Lesley Manville’s Mary, Gerri’s unattached workmate whose woeful tales of single life and dubious free-spirit logic hide in plain sight the desperation she contains. Primarily it is a love story between Mary and the family life of Gerri and Tom and this extends to the drunken flirtation with their adult son, Joe, more drunken flirtation with the drink-driving laws and fighting off an old, similarly unattached friend of Tom, whose own mistaken advances end in similar failure. Where Leigh and the cast succeed is in finding the initial humour in Mary’s fragile mannerisms and keeping the focus on her, unblinking, until it turns into uncomfortable pity.

Small details hook into my memory, the identical, and slightly silly, greeting between father and son made me smile and are a perfect example of how Leigh builds his worlds, his families. There is no Beethoven accompanied fatality, no sudden explosion of secrets and lies but the rich undercurrent of emotional intensity is there and enhances the fine performances and deliberate nature of the film.

So, love, life and death thrown against the backdrop of family life. We’ve seen this from Leigh before but it is a pleasure to watch again, the sense of deliberate normality can grate but it is a seductive world Leigh and his cast have built. With the focus on Mary’s ditzy desperation turning into something quite pitiable by the end of the film Leigh manages to carry the characters through their unremarkable lives allowing us to easily read between the lines and become caught up by the emotional forces at play.

Leigh allows the drama to breathe, and earns the emotional connection we have throughout. Gerri’s acquiescence to Mary’s seemingly endless, and often irritating, self deprecation stops dead when her actions threaten the family unit and Mary’s redemption is left undecided and we end much as we began but with the feeling we’ve understood far more than a surface reading gives us.

I was slightly disturbed by some of the audience howling with laughter as the moments of silence grew to unease, or when the small talk veered slightly too close to awkwardness but for me the unspoken interactions, the unhurried pace and refusal to provide catharsis gave a wonderful shine to the film.
