This is rather fantastic news and massive kudos to Orange to have the bottle to make this happen but we’ve just received a press release alerting us to the fact that Miss Piggy will be on the red carpet at the 2012 BAFTA Awards to interview the stars as they walk down the carpet. There was talk of both Miss Piggy and Kermit hosting the Oscars a few months ago but they were ditched for Billy Crystal so this really is a big plus for the BAFTA Awards and will no doubt get picked up all over the place!

Orange are the main sponsor of Britain’s biggest awards ceremony and have taken the rather brave decision to get Miss Piggy to be their main presenter on the red carpet for the awards this Sunday 12th February. I say ‘brave’ for two reasons….

She will do her best to steal the show and make it all about herself

I can’t even begin to imagine the logistical nightmare that it must be to get Miss Piggy to do the interviews on the carpet with the certain requirements that she must have!

Miss Piggy will no doubt get a few plugs for her new movie, The Muppets which is released this Friday in during the course of the show but I simply cannot wait to see the most famous pig in the world hit the carpet and interview some a-listers. If you’ve been to the cinema recently, the latest Orange advert uses The Muppets to ask you to turn your phone off before the movie so it seems the relationship between Orange and The Muppets (Disney) grows even stronger!

Roll on Sunday and we’ll see you there. We have interviews with Miss Piggy and Kermit the Frog here and you can click here to see all our coverage of the BAFTA Awards. We’ll be live blogging the awards too so make sure you tun in and use the reminder box on the right of this post to let you know when the feed goes live.

Full press release below:

INTERNATIONAL ICON MISS PIGGY PREPARES TO FLIRT WITH THE STARS AS THE HOST OF ORANGE’S BAFTA RED CARPET SHOW

The ‘Orange BAFTA Red Carpet Show With Miss Piggy’ will be available from orange.co.uk/bafta on Monday 13 February

London 6 February 2012. Orange today announced that, in her own words, “international star, role model and diva,” – the fabulous Miss Piggy – is set to put her unique questions to the great and the good of the international movie scene at this weekend’s Orange British Academy Film Awards ceremony as the host of its ‘Orange BAFTA Red Carpet Show With Miss Piggy’.

Miss Piggy needs no introduction; star of film, TV and the upcoming Disney movie ‘The Muppets’ released nationwide on February 10th, she has been a pop culture icon known for her wit, charm and for having a certain frog on her arm. In a UK first she will be anchoring the ‘Orange BAFTA Red Carpet Show With Miss Piggy’ from the ceremony, conducting interviews and analysis with the leading lights of the movie industry; from the huge array of home-grown talent as well as many famous faces flying in from around the globe, in her own inimitable style.

The glittering awards ceremony will take place on Sunday 12 February at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden, London just two days after ‘The Muppets’ goes on general release across the UK.

Miss Piggy commented on her role: “Imagine the likes of Clooney, Dujardin, Fassbender, Oldman and Pitt achieving the very pinnacle of their careers by getting a chance to speak with the one and only moi—Miss Piggy! Naturally, I will be asking questions that only moi would dare to ask.

So live your dreams vicariously through me and tune in Monday 13th February to see lots of MOI on the red carpet with my fellow A-List actors. I can hardly wait…and neither can they!”

Spencer McHugh, Director of Brand at Orange, said: “We couldn’t be more delighted that an icon of Miss Piggy’s stature has agreed to host our red carpet show from this year’s BAFTA’s. Having her there is very exciting for us and we can’t wait to see what great interviews she gets on the night.”

Joining Miss Piggy in the new movie is Walter, the world’s biggest Muppet fan, his brother Gary (Jason Segel) and Gary’s girlfriend Mary (Amy Adams) from Smalltown, USA, who discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman (Chris Cooper) to raze the Muppet Theatre and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets’ former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theatre, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate. With secret, signature, celebrity cameos, Disney’s “The Muppets” hits the big screen February 10, 2012.

Orange BAFTA Red Carpet Show With Miss Piggy’ will be filmed and edited overnight and made available through orange.co.uk/bafta and other channels on Monday 13 February.

When we look at the names up for Best Film at this year’s BAFTA awards what is evident and of particular interest is the absence of a clear favourite.

Last year The King’s Speech picked up an unusual amount of momentum and there was no huge surprise when the envelopes were opened and Messrs Firth and Hooper were called up on stage. You could argue that The Artist has impressed critics and audiences alike and will sweep the boards on the 12th of February but there are other films which you must catch up with before awards night.

Lining up in the Best Film category against Michel Hazanavicius’ silent charmfest we have four films which, though superficially disparate in many ways, have certain themes in common, plus they are all adaptations of celebrated novels. Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive was all but ignored by the American Academy is a long shot perhaps, but has gained a very strong following since its release and while it’s doubtful Refn will walk away with a statue next weekend the fact that it has this moment in the spotlight is encouraging for such a singular, and atypical, contender.

The Help benefited greatly from an excellent cast and Viola Davis has found a number of award nominations for her role as Aibileen Clark, stealing the show from other rising stars Jessica Chastain and the ever wonderful Emma Stone. It’s more likely to be her show if Tate Taylor’s film is to triumph at the awards, though she too has some very strong competition from Berenice Bejo, Meryl Streep’s Thatchergram and Tilda Swinton’s incendiary turn fronting We Need to Talk About Kevin.

Another film which has perhaps more awards traction for its leading performance in Alexander Payne’s The Descendants which has placed George Clooney front and centre for Best Actor award. He too has to fight the emissary from The Artist with Jean Dujardin being perhaps the one to beat. Payne’s film has done very well, and it’s good to see the director of Sideways working again after a seven year absence from the big screen.

Finally we come to the film which may steal the show, with Tomas Alfredson’s Tinker Tailor Solder Spy up for eleven awards including Best Film, Outstanding British Film and Best Actor as well as a well deserved nod for Production Design and Best Adapted Screenplay. Unashamedly old fashioned in its approach to the spy thriller genre (thank goodness a modern retelling was never on the cards) the strength of the film’s direction has been slightly overshadowed by the towering performance of Gary Oldman however there’s a fair chance we’ll see Alfredson (and co-writer Peter Straughn) take to the stage on the 12th.

Whatever happens there’s still time to see the films before the event, and you may have noticed our Orange Film Pulse sidebar item which lists the nominated films and links to our reviews. Orange have been a long time ally of BAFTA and their Orange Wednesdays and FilmToGo campaigns are exactly the sort of thing to encourage more people to see films and discuss them online, something which no awards ceremony would be complete without.

So, what’s your opinion? Have you seen all of the films? Any you need to catch up with before the Awards ceremony? Shocks or surprises envisaged?

We’ll be there on the night to bring you all of the news and announcements as they happen. Get involved and join the debate. See you there.

Orange Film Pulse launches – harnessing what the web is saying about film, in one simple score

Brand new tool collates opinion and sentiment from across the web – from Twitter, Facebook and leading film websites and blogs

Orange Film Pulse launches during awards season, highlighting the buzz around BAFTA-nominated films

Orange Film Pulse now live at www.orange.co.uk/bafta

London, UK – January 25 2012 – Orange today announced the launch of Orange Film Pulse; a new innovative tool that collates opinion from across the internet in one place and lets film fans see which films are generating the most love, right now.

Launched as part of Orange’s sponsorship of the Orange British Academy Film Awards, Orange Film Pulse scans tens of thousands of tweets, Facebook pages and reviews from a range of leading film news and review websites and blogs. A dedicated algorithm then analyses tone, sentiment and review scores – be they negative or positive – and summarises the love into one easy to read score out of 100.

At launch, there are over 35 films with Orange Film Pulse Profiles including The Artist, My Week with Marilyn, War Horse and Hugo, with more being added each week. A simple ticker along the top of the tool allows easy access to each film’s results.

There is also a simple search option for BAFTA-nominated films from the past and present that highlights those available to enjoy with Orange Wednesdays and Film To Go, Orange’s film rental offer. The Orange Film Pulse has four columns of information which contribute to a film’s overall score:

Love on Twitter – the number of positive tweets this week (Friday to Friday)

Love on Film Club – the average rating given by the Orange Film Club community on Facebook

Love on Facebook – the Facebook film page with the most likes

Love on film sites – the average score given by selected film sites

Users can delve down into the information directly through the tool to see real time tweets about a particular film, or read a review, enabling them to make a decision about what film to see, as well as being able to tweet their opinion or add a Facebook review from within the tool.

Orange customers using the tool can click from within a film’s profile to request a code to watch that film at either Orange Wednesdays or via Orange Film To Go – Orange’s film download service in partnership with iTunes – and by doing so can go on to win some exclusive BAFTA related prizes including:

VIP ticket packages to the Orange British Academy Film Awards

Tickets to an exclusive BAFTA screening in London

BAFTA goody bags

Advance screenings of Disney’s John Carter in association with Odeon IMAX

Tickets to Orange BAFTA’s: The Final Word – the exclusive BAFTA awards night panel and live ceremony screening event hosted by Alex Zane

Spencer McHugh, Brand Director at Orange UK said: “The internet offers an incredible wealth of sources and opinion on film, but that also means the experience of searching for a definitive answer or opinion can be confusing and time consuming.

With Orange Film Pulse, we’re offering a simple and easy way to see what the overall opinion from the web is, and encouraging film lovers to get involved and share their love for film, all of which contributes to that film’s overall score.”

A panel of 13 people including Simon Pegg, Sienna Miller and Harry Potter Director David Yates scoured the globe for those rising stars and came up with list of 8 including Adam Deacon, Chris Hemsworth, Felicity Jones, Tom Hiddleston, Jennifer Lawrence, Chris O’Dowd, Jessica Chastain and Eddie Redmayne. It was your turn to whittle that list down even further and below are you final 5. The next job you have is to get that list down to the main winner and you can do that by voting here.

The final five are:

Adam Deacon, Chris Hemsworth, Chris O’Dowd, Eddie Redmayne and Tom Hiddleston!

Let us know what you think of that list in the comments section below. Strikes me that no women made the final five and I’m very surprised not to see Jennifer Lawrence make the list. You can now vote for your favourite here.

Ben Mortimer is currently our man on the ground at BAFTA HQ and will hopefully be talking with three of the five who are in attendance launch event today.

When it comes to the BAFTA Awards, as you probably know from last year, we like to go all out and will cover every inch of it if we can. The final winner is announced at the Orange British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 13 February 2012.

London 11 January 2012. Today at BAFTA’s headquarters, Pippa Harris, award jury chair, Deputy Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee and producing partner of Sam Mendes, announced the hotly anticipated nominees for the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award 2012 as selected by Orange Wednesdays customers from a long-list of eight. The nominations recognise five international actors and actresses whose talent has captured the imagination of the British public. The nominees are:

ADAM DEACON – Hackney-born Adam rose to fame in Noel Clarke’s KIDULTHOOD, before reprising the role in the follow-up ADULTHOOD and again working with Clarke in 4321. Adam then went onto make his own mark on the film industry by co-writing, directing and starring in Brit comedy and box office success ANUVAHOOD.

CHRIS HEMSWORTH – Australian actor Chris became an overnight success after landing the title role in film version of the Marvel comic THOR and he will reprise the role in

THE AVENGERS next year. Chris is next starring in SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN opposite Kirsten Stewart and Charlize Theron and will play Formula One driver James Hunt in Ron Howard’s RUSH.

CHRIS O’DOWD – Chris began his career in the cult comedy series THE IT CROWD before breaking into film with roles including THE BOAT THAT ROCKED, GULLIVER’S TRAVELS and hugely successful BRIDESMAIDS. Chris will next be seen in Judd Apatow’s THIS IS 40 alongside Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann.

EDDIE REDMAYNE – After receiving much critical acclaim on the West End and Broadway stage Eddie burst onto the film scene in MY WEEK WITH MARILYN alongside Michelle Williams, Dame Judy Dench and Kenneth Branagh. He recently finished filming BIRDSONG the BBC adaptation of the acclaimed novel by Sebastian Faulks and will soon be starring in the film version of the musical LES MISÉRABLES.

TOM HIDDLESTON – RADA graduate Tom broke onto the big screen earlier this year in Kenneth Branagh’s THOR. Tom’s recent projects include Woody Allen’s film MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, Steven Spielberg’s WAR HORSE, and THE DEEP BLUE SEA opposite Rachel Weisz. Tom has recently finished filming THE AVENGERS which is due for release in May 2012.

Orange’s accolade for up and coming talent is the only award at the Orange British Academy Film Awards to be voted for by the public. Voting takes place both at orange.co.uk/bafta and via text*. The winner will be announced at the star-studded Orange British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 12 February 2012.

Now in its seventh year, the award has set a standard for identifying talent destined for super-stardom. Previous winners include James McAvoy in 2006, Eva Green in 2007, Shia LaBeouf in 2008, Noel Clarke in 2009, Kristen Stewart in 2010 and Tom Hardy in 2011.

Potential rising stars were proposed by BAFTA members and leading film industry insiders to create an initial list of contenders who have appeared in one or more feature films, with at least one of those films released in the current awards year, 1 January to 31 December 2011. The jury for the award featured a raft of leading figures from across the film industry, including actors Simon Pegg and Sienna Miller, jury chair Pippa Harris, producing partner of Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road, Jarhead), four-time Harry Potter director David Yates, producer Allon Reich (28 Weeks Later, The History Boys, The Last King of Scotland), casting director Nina Gold (The King’s Speech) and film publicist Kate Lee. These jurors whittled down the names to a long list of eight. These eight were then voted on by Orange Wednesdays customers, who have determined the final five that will now be voted for by the public.

Pippa Harris, Orange Wednesdays Rising Star award jury chair and Deputy Chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee, said: “It’s great to involve the general public in championing the stars of the future, which is why the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award is such a fantastic initiative. The jury had a tough job deciding the long list of eight, as we were spoilt for choice. With such an array of new talent, I can’t wait to see who the public choose as their winner.”

Spencer McHugh, Director of Brand at Orange, said: “With the award now in its seventh year, we continue to be awed by how enthusiastic the British public are when it comes to celebrating future film talent. The fact that figures such as Simon Pegg, Sienna Miller and the rest of our esteemed jury so kindly offer their time shows how the film world has embraced the award.”

The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award was created in honour of Mary Selway, the highly respected BAFTA-winning casting director whose career spanned three decades and over ninety films before she died in 2004. She worked with notable directors such as Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski, Clint Eastwood and Ridley Scott, contributing to the creation of some of the silver screen’s most memorable characters.

We’re big fans of all things Simon Pegg here at HeyUGuys and we just got the news through that the man himself will be joining Sienna Miller as jurors on the 2012 BAFTA Awards to judge the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award. Previous winners include James McAvoy, Kristen Stewart and Noel Clarke. Last year, the nominees included Gemma Arterton, Andrew Garfield, Aaron Johnson and Emma Stone with the winner being Tom Hardy who still seems to be going from strength to strength in everything he does.

The jury will be chaired by Pippa Harris, and she’ll also be joined by a man who knows a thing or two about directing big movies, David Yates who directed four of the Harry Potter movies, producer Allon Reich, casting director Nina Gold and film publicist Kate Lee. Also joining them will be journalists Colin Kennedy (Metro), Alex O’Connell (The Times), Hannah Marriott (Grazia), Jonny Pile (Shortlist), Jamie Graham (Total Film) and Charles Gant (Heat).

Read on for the full press release and stay tuned on 11th January when the nominees will be announced. The BAFTA Awards 2012 take place Sunday 13th February and if we’re as lucky as last year, we’ll be right there in the thick of the action. make sure you stay tuned for more!

London, UK – November 1, 2011 – Orange today announced that leading British actors Simon Pegg and Sienna Miller (a nominee herself in 2008) have joined the influential jury for the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award, which yesterday met to cast the final votes for the longlist of nominees upon which the British public will vote. The winner will be announced at the Orange British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 12 February 2012.

The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award honours a young actor or actress of any nationality who has demonstrated exceptional talent and ambition, and has begun to capture the imagination of the British public as a film star in the making. Previous winners have included James McAvoy, Kristen Stewart and Noel Clarke, with 2011’s nominees including Gemma Arterton, Andrew Garfield, Aaron Johnson, Emma Stone and winner Tom Hardy. The award is the only one at the ceremony voted for by members of the public, and is a hotly-contested accolade for up-and-coming film talent.

Simon Pegg commented: “Joining the jury for the award was such an exciting prospect as it means you get to watch so many brilliant films and performances in the name of research. The award has a great track record for celebrating actors that really strike a chord with cinema goers, and with such great up and coming talent out there at the minute I think they’re going to be spoilt for choice.”

Simon and Sienna will join a raft of leading figures from across the film industry, including jury chair Pippa Harris, Deputy Chairman of BAFTA’s Film Committee and producing partner of Sam Mendes (Revolutionary Road, Jarhead), four time Harry Potter director David Yates, producer Allon Reich (28 Weeks Later, The History Boys, The Last King of Scotland), casting director Nina Gold (The King’s Speech), film publicist Kate Lee as well as selected members of the film and arts media. Many of the jury have discovered, worked alongside or supported rising stars throughout their careers.

Joining Simon, Sienna and other jurors are leading film and arts journalists Colin Kennedy (Metro), Alex O’Connell (The Times), Hannah Marriott (Grazia), Jonny Pile (Shortlist), Jamie Graham (Total Film) and Charles Gant (Heat).

The Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award jury’s role is to select a longlist of eight nominees from the hundreds of submissions made by the BAFTA membership, film industry figures and members of the arts media. This longlist is then voted on by Orange customers, including those who have used Orange Wednesdays and Orange Film To Go, throughout November and December to create a final list of five nominees which are announced in January 2012, when voting opens to the British public. The final winner is announced at the Orange British Academy Film Awards on Sunday 13 February 2012.

Spencer McHugh, Brand Director at Orange UK added: “Our jury this year represents a stellar array of leading lights and talent from the British film industry. We’re of course particularly thrilled that Simon and Sienna have kindly offered their time and expertise in order to celebrate the film stars of tomorrow.”

Jury Chair Pippa Harris: “I’m thrilled that so many talented Industry colleagues have made the time to take part in this year’s Orange Wednesdays Rising Star jury. The jury’s wealth of experience is a testament to how highly regarded this award is, and will ensure that the list of nominees represent the real stars of tomorrow.”

The award was created in honour of Mary Selway, the highly respected BAFTA-winning casting director whose career spanned three decades and over ninety films before she died in 2004. She worked with notable directors such as Steven Spielberg, Roman Polanski, Clint Eastwood and Ridley Scott, contributing to the creation of some of the silver screen’s most memorable characters.

Synopsis: Now prepare for a motion picture experience unlike anything you’ve ever seen, heard or feared before. The Blair Witch Project follows a trio of filmmakers on what should have been a simple walk in the woods, but quickly becomes an excursion into heart-stopping terror. As the three become inexplicably lost, morale deteriorates, hunger sets in, accusations fly. By night, unseen evil stirs beyond their campfire’s light. By day, chilling ritualistic figures are discovered nearby. As the end of their journey approaches, they realise that what they are filming now is not a legend, but their own descent into unimaginable horror.

Synopsis: It’s 1974 in the Midlands where power cuts, strikes and boot-boy aggro on the football terraces are the norm. Joe McCain (Martin Compston: The Disappearance of Alice Creed) and best friend Russ Mountjoy (Alfie Allen: Game of Thrones) are stuck in dead-end jobs and bored with lives going nowhere. That is until Joe meets Jane (Nichola Burley: Streetdance 3D), who introduces him to a whole new world of sound and movement and all-night dancing: the Wigan Casino, home of Northern Soul. Before long Joe finds himself caught between aspiring artist Mandy (Felicity Jones: Cemetery Junction), and Jane who is already involved with Alan (Craig Parkinson : Control, Four Lions), the undisputed king of the Northern Soul dance floor.

There’s a slight change in the Film Night Live this week (you don’t have to be an Orange customer for Film Night Live) as it’s set to take place at 1pm this afternoon rather than the usual 8pm slot which means you can watch during lunch time.
Those gunning for this year’s award include:

* Gemma Arterton
* Andrew Garfield
* Tom Hardy
* Aaron Johnson
* Emma Stone

Previous winners of the award include James McAvoy in 2006, Eva Green in 2007, Shia LaBeouf in 2008, Noel Clarke in 2009 and Kristen Stewart in 2010. Tradition suggests the previous winner will be at the award ceremony to pass on their award so could that mean the Twilight star will be at the ceremony? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

You can vote for your favourite & find out more information on the Orange website here. So, who do you think is going to win?

Nominee Biographies

Gemma Arterton

After graduating from RADA in the summer of 2007, Gemma has quickly become one of Britain’s brightest young actresses, most notably for her iconic Bond girl role in Quantum of Solace, alongside Daniel Craig and Dame Judi Dench.

With a string of impressive performances behind her, including Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla, Richard Curtis’ The Boat That Rocked, Clash of the Titans and Prince of Persia: The Sands Of Time, she’s established herself on the world stage.

Most recently, her performance in Tamara Drewe, directed by award-winning Stephen Frears, received glittering praise, as did her performance in J Blakeson’s independent film The Disappearance of Alice Creed.

Andrew Garfield

Rapidly becoming one of the most sought-after young actors working internationally today, Andrew has notched several stunning performances under his belt since graduating from drama school just six years ago.

After appearances in John Crowley’s Boy A which earned him the Best Actor TV BAFTA, Robert Redford’s Lions for Lambs and Terry Gilliam’s The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, most recently Andrew has been earning numerous Best Supporting Actor nominations for his performance as Eduardo Saverin in David Fincher’s smash hit The Social Network where he stars alongside Jesse Eisenberg and Justin Timberlake.

Andrew will soon be seen in Never Let Me Go, with Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan and has recently commenced filming the leading role of Peter Parker in Marc Webb’s much anticipated next instalment of Spider-Man, set for release in 2012.

Tom Hardy

Making his name in Spielberg’s TV series Band of Brothers, Tom’s film debut was Star Trek: Nemesis, swiftly followed by Ridley Scott’s war thriller Black Hawk Down. Tom has become one of cinema’s most versatile and gripping actors, including a recent performance in the smash hit Inception, alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

After a string of appearances in hit films such as Warrior and Guy Ritchie’s RocknRolla, as well as the TV series of Stuart: A Life Backwards and Wuthering Heights Tom’s most powerful performance undoubtedly came in the lead role for Bronson, in which he put on three stone of muscle to play the infamous British prisoner.

Currently in filming for This Means War with Reese Witherspoon and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy with Colin Firth and Gary Oldman, Tom has also secured a part in Christopher Nolan’s hotly anticipated Batman Rises.

Aaron Johnson

Aaron’s rise to fame was highlighted by his critically acclaimed performance as a young John Lennon in Sam Taylor Wood’s Nowhere Boy, and more recently in the lead role for smash hit Kick Ass, for which he was nominated for ‘Performance of the Year’ at the National Movie Awards.

His impressive back catalogue of appearances includes The Illusionist, in which he played a young Edward Norton, Shanghai Knights, where he starred alongside Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson, and also in Dummy and The Greatest.

Emma Stone

After some notable performances in hit films Easy A and Superbad, Emma recently landed the role of Gwen Stacy in Marc Webb’s next Spider-Man release, cementing her position as one of Hollywood’s brightest young actresses.

Following her typically charismatic appearances in recent films such as Zombieland and Paper Man, she’s now set to appear in Crazy, Stupid, Love, which is due for release next year, also starring Ryan Gosling.

She can also soon be seen in DreamWorks’ film The Help, an adaptation of Kathyrn Stockett’s New York Times best-selling novel, and has also lent her voice to the DreamWorks animated comedy The Croods, which also features Nicholas Cage and Ryan Reynolds.

This year the jury will include fashion guru turned director, Tom Ford, Actor Peter Sarsgaard, Actress Natascha McElhone, casting director, Lucy Bevan who worked with Peter on An Education, director Mike Newell (Donnie Brasco, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Prince of Persia and the Sands of Time), Jamie Graham, deputy editor from Total Film and Robbie Collin, Film Editor for The News of the World, many of whom will be familiar with him on Twitter. Ben Drew aka Plan B will act as Jury Spokesperson while all the above will be overseen by the Jury Chair, Finola Dwyer (producer – An Education, Me Without You, Backbeat and chair of BAFTA’s Film Committee).

The list goes on but I’ll let you read on if you want to find out more below in the official press release. We also have a short video with Peter Sarsgaard who tells us about his first big break in Boys Don’t Cry and how he enjoyed a good debate over the new rising stars.

Previous winners include Noel Clarke, Shia LaBeouf with the most recent winner at last year’s event being Kristen Stewart. The film’s cast reads like a who’s who of the UK’s finest in rising talent, making Ben a natural choice for the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star jury.

Ben Drew comments: “It was a huge honour to be asked to be on the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award jury. My experience of casting for Ill Manors gave me an incredible insight into the amazing pool of young talent in the UK and made me feel inspired to create the projects that will allow me to work with them. I have also been lucky enough to star alongside some of these guys over the years so I am looking forward to bringing this insight and inspiration along to the jury.”

Tom Ford is another of this year’s multi-talented jurors, an icon in the world of fashion and highly respected within the film industry after his award-winning directorial debut A Single Man hit our screens this year.

Tom Ford said: “I am honored to have been asked to be on the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star jury. This is such an important award in that it supports the new generation of actors and actresses and also reflects the tastes of the cinema going public – who ultimately are the best ones to judge who they want to see more of on their screens.”

Now in its sixth year, the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award has set a standard for identifying talent destined for super stardom. Previous winners include James McAvoy in 2006, Eva Green in 2007, Shia LaBeouf in 2008, Noel Clarke in 2009 and Kristen Stewart in 2010. Potential rising stars were proposed by BAFTA members and film industry insiders to create an initial list of contenders. The jury, consisting of actors, casting directors, film directors, media representatives and chaired by a member of the BAFTA Film Committee, then selects a longlist of eight. These eight will be voted on by Orange Wednesdays customers, who will determine the final five nominees. The nominees will then go up for public vote in January to decide the winner.

Finola Dwyer, jury chair for the award, comments: “We have a very esteemed jury this year from director Tom Ford, who made such a dazzling directing debut last year with A Single Man to Peter Sarsgaard and Ben Drew. Many of the jury have discovered, worked alongside or supported rising stars throughout their careers. The distinguished jury is a reflection of the importance and high regard the film industry places on the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award.”

This year’s Orange Wednesdays Rising Star Award jury is made up of: Ben Drew (director and musician), Lucy Bevan (casting director), Tom Ford (director), Peter Sarsgaard (actor), Natascha McElhone (actress), Mike Newell (director), Laura Symons (publicist), Charles Gant (film journalist), Jamie Graham (Total Film), Larushka Ivan-Zadeh (Metro), Hannah Marriott (Grazia), Geoff Lloyd (Absolute Radio) and Robbie Collin (News of the World). The jury is chaired by Oscar-nominated producer Finola Dwyer.

The award honours a young actor or actress whose talent has inspired popular acclaim from the British public. BAFTA members and the film industry were invited to recommend up and coming performers who have appeared in several feature films, with at least one of those films released in the current awards year, 1 January to 31 December 2010. The award has been renamed the Orange Wednesdays Rising Star award this year, to reflect the new level of involvement that Orange Wednesdays customers will play in deciding upon the final five that will go up for the public vote.

Live Blog (updated as the awards are announced – for a list of winners and nominees please scroll down)

6.40 – The Red carpet is dwindling, but there were a number of notable crowd pleasers tonight. Carey Mulligan and Vera Farmiga took the paparazzi’s attention, and Prince William turned up and worked the crowd which was a nice touch. Then he was slightly upstaged by Robert Pattinson…

We’ll have pictures up as soon as we can – it’s been a crazy night so far – and the awards haven’t even started yet! Stay tuned for more…

7.00 – Following Lord Attenborough has found his replacement as President of BAFTA – the crowd pleaser Prince William. Nice speech, short.

7.10 – Jonathan Ross has taken the stage and is already making friends, singling out Dustin Hoffman, Kate Winslet and…Robert Pattinson, who looked embarrassed.

7.15 – Colin Firth on stage for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Producer or Director… Duncan Jones wins for MOON! That’s made my day. Everyone should see this film!

7.20 – James Corden’s speech when presenting Short Film makes me sad that this isn’t going out live… The Winner for Best Short Film is…I Do Air.

7.25 – Mother of Many is the Best Short Animation, great speech, the winners are so happy and humble so far.

7.30 – Michael Giacchino wins for Up’s Music – this has a great score, it really elevated the movie (in a non punny way).

7.31 – Best Sound design is next up – sci-fi features heavily, but the winner is The Hurt Locker! Well deserved, and might start a trend…

7.35 – Editing is up next, some shining examples this year – Hurt Locker a favourite…and it WINS!

7.37 – The legend that is Terry Gilliam is on stage to present the Michael Balcon award for Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema, the award goes to Joe Dunton, a pioneer in movie technology – he’s worked with some of the best directors around, Lynch, Kubrick and Spielberg to name a few. His contribution cannot be understated. There’s a great montage, so make sure you’re watching when it goes out on TV. Gilliam is a genial and generous presenter.

7.44 Joe Dunton is a gracious recipient and taking the 3D glasses out and wearing them was a classy move. He’s still looking to the future.

7.46 – Best Cinematography is next up. One of the few categories The Road is nominated and with good reason – it looked incredible… but the result is The Hurt Locker again! This is turning into a very good night for Ms. Bigelow – will the big prizes follow the technical awards?

7.50 – Nick Frost and Mackenzie Crook are here to present special effects – any guesses? My pick would be District 9 – but will the Avatar juggernaut win out?

7.51 – Of course it will. Worthy winner. Avatar takes it.

7.53 – Avatar bods seem very happy to get their award, and nearly forget to thanks their families but rushed back on – good for them!

7.54 – The Hurt Locker is doing well so far, and the speeches are short, and a big award is up next.

7.57 – Best Supporting Actor is up – Christian McKay’s Orson Welles was great, Stanley Tucci did fine but Christoph Waltz is sure to walk away with it…

7.59 – And he is the winner. Richly deserved – brilliant performance. Waltz is thanking everyone, especially QT. Class Act.

8.02 – Costume design now – nice to see A Single Man there, and the winner is….The Young Victoria – that’s a great pick – it was very impressive work, for a film undeservedly overlooked.

8.04 – They are speeding through the awards tonight – no great shocks so far, but a great atmosphere. Still very happy about Moon’s win. Make up and Supporting Actress coming up next. None of the other presenters have reached James Corden’s hilarious heights so far…

8.07 – Make- up is next, fingers crossed for Gilliam and Dr Parnassus, but feel it will be overlooked.

8.09 – It was. The Young Victoria wins again!

8.10 – Best Supporting Actress award is next. Cue the bra jokes…

8.11 – Nowhere Boy has a big presence here – Anne Marie Duff is my pick. Let’s see.

8.12 – It’s Mo’nique’s night! I’ve not seen it so can’t comment but it’s not a huge surprise. Lee Daniels takes the stage to accept on her behalf.

8.14 – So, now it’s British film – will it be Moon again, or Nowhere Boy, or will Fish Tank crack it? Such a great list of nominees.

8.16 – Fish Tank wins it! That’s a great pick – great to see this film getting something – I felt it was overlooked a little in the other categories.

8.18 – Great acceptance speech and a lovely moment between Jonathan Ross and Mickey Rourke – hope they keep that one in the broadcast…

8.21 – Original Screenplay is up next – this could go any way…

8.24 – Slight shocker as The Hurt Locker wins it. Thought Tarantino would win this one.

8.26 Production design is up next – will Gilliam’s Imaginarium walk away with it, or will it be an Avatar win?

8.27 – It’s an Avatar win, not a massive shocker as it was a real achievement, and all in a computer…

8.31 – This one will be good – the Orange Rising star award, last year’s winner Noel Clarke takes the stage.

8.33 – Kristen Stewart wins it – slight shocker there, but not when you take into account the fact that this is the only award voted by the Public…

8.37 – Adapted Screenplay is next – Come on In The Loop!

8.39 – Ok, Up in The Air gets it, Good script, great film. Should have been Armando’s boys.

8.44 – Animated film – Peter Capaldi is on stage about to hand it over – let’s hope it’s Coraline on the receiving end…

8.47 – Up wins it – Pete Docter is up on stage and being very nice about it.

8.48 – Film not in the English Language is up next and Carey Mulligan is doing the talk – great list of nominees – for my money Let The Right One In is a great choice – let’s see if A Prophet or The White Ribbon gets it…

8.52 – It’s A Prophet – such a strong category this year.

8.54 – It’s one of the biggest awards next… Best Director. Will it be Bigelow’s night?

8.56 – It really is between Bigelow and Cameron – or will it be a shock? Clive Owen redefines dapper as he handles the gold face…

9.00 – It’s Kathryn Bigelow! If I’m right she’s the first woman to win the award, and it is so well deserved! Incredible work – is this a sign for the Oscars?

9.03 – Best Actor time. Fingers crossed for Colin Firth…

9.05 – Seeing the montage is amazing – such great work done this year and Colin Firth wins it! That and Duncan Jones makes my night. Outstanding!

9.08 – Mickey Rourke is on stage to present Best Actress – dressed as Akuma from Street Fighter.

9.11 – Carey Mulligan wins it! Amazing night for the British and well deserved…

9.13 – Best Film up next… Dustin Hoffman is a class act, but is it me or did every one of the jokes fall flat tonight?

9.16 – Best Film is The Hurt Locker! No-one here can believe it but its a great, GREAT choice. Wonderful. James Cameron is smiling and clapping…

9.23 – It’s been a great night for Kathryn Bigelow and The Hurt Locker, and it was amazing to see Colin Firth and Carey Mulligan taking the Best Acting awards – my favourite moment was Duncan Jones though, whose speech was as emotional as it was deserved. He is my new hero. Hope you all enjoyed it – now you can let us know what you think…

Clarke won the award in 2009 and joins the likes of David Parfitt, Jason Isaacs and Pippa Harris to select the nominees for the 2010 award.

Once selected the public are able to vote for the winner at the BAFTA Awards which take place in London on 21st February. Voting opens when nominees are announced on 12 January 2010 via www.orange.co.uk/bafta.

Press Release: 1 December 2009: Now in its fifth year, the award has set a standard for identifying talent destined for super stardom. Previous winners include James McAvoy in 2006, Eva Green in 2007, Shia LaBeouf in 2008 and Noel Clarke in 2009. Potential Rising Stars were proposed by BAFTA members and film industry insiders to create an initial long list of names. The jury, consisting of actors, casting directors, producers, media representatives and BAFTA Film Committee members, then selects the final five nominees via a secret ballot.

The Orange Rising Star Award honours a young actor or actress whose talent has inspired popular acclaim from the British public. BAFTA members and the film industry were invited to recommend up and coming performers who have appeared in several feature films, with at least one of those films released in the current awards year, 1 January to 31 December 2009, with an extension period from 1 January to 19 February 2010.

The full list of jurers can be seen below.
