Following up the 1987 Schwarzenegger film was on the mind of Producer Robert Rodriguez for years before the Troublemaker cameras rolled, and having passed the directing reins to Nimrod Antal we finally get a chance to see a ‘proper’ Predators sequel.

Dave’s review of the film here is generally positive, finding weaknesses in the use (or underuse) of a few characters, and a lack of character development and while I agree with this the decision to buy Predators on Blu-ray won’t sit with a rumination on the duplicitous nature of humanity when set against an unknown evil. This is a bloodthirsty, balls-out, action film, pure and simple, and it succeeds in resurrecting the character of the Predator from the previous two outings against those pesky Aliens.

Literally dropping their characters into the action, Rodriguez and Antal begin simple and pare down the hunt until a bombastic finale leaves us with a sequel firmly in our sights and for the most part the film makes the most of the Predator mythology, while expanding the world with the other Predator warriors and some well choreographed action set pieces.

Adrien Brody continues to pick some oddball career choices but that only makes him more likeable – this year alone I’ve seen him in The Brothers Bloom, Vincenzo Natali’s Splice and now Predators and every time he convinces me that he’s both completely serious about the parts he chooses and capable of having a great time while shooting, as he and the rest of the cast are clearly having fun with the film.

Though the film loses momentum around the time a certain actor cameos Antal knows enough about the Predators as a movie monster to keep his audience interested. The interviews Dave conducted with Rodriguez and Antal over at Troublemaker Studios in the last few weeks show off the passion the entire production crew had for the project and they are well worth a look. The commentary on the Blu-ray are great fun as both producer and director have a lot to say about the project.

The rest of the special features are fairly standard, and the transfer is pretty flawless and the film enjoyable. There’s a contagious enthusiasm that carries the film when the pacing flags and there’s enough gruesome, hard boiled action to keep fans of the franchise happy.

Predators is out on a triple play Blu-ray, DVD and digital copy combo today.

IGN got talking with Robert Rodriguez about Predators while at Comic-Con and he said that a further sequel looks likely.

“[The studio] said, ‘Let’s do some other ones. What other story ideas do you have?’” said the filmmaker. “Because it was like, let’s test out the market with this one. They really wanted it to be pretty contained, pretty scaled-back. They didn’t want to put too many of the ideas into it that we could save for a second one. So we could see what the appetite was, because the bigger movie would actually be what comes following that. That kind of sets up a new storyline, new location and world, and then you can really go crazy from there.”

Rodriguez, who produced Predators with Nimrod Antal directing, says he has “an idea” for a further sequel and would plan to invite a number of screenwriters to pitch to him on the basis of that idea, together with introducing any new concepts they might have as well. Whether he could be tempted to direct this one himself is hard to say. He is an extremely accomplished action director and perfectly at home with complex effects shots, however he seems to feel obliged to complete Sin City 2 first (and how long have we been waiting for that?). He may therefore remain as producer and bring in a director as before.

23 years ago, a formulaic Arnold Schwarzenegger action vehicle was released. It enjoyed box office, if not necessarily critical success. A lacklustre follow-up ensured the franchise was, cinematically at least, silenced for many years. The series’ protagonists were given their big screen resurrection 6 years ago with shared billing, with a sequel 3 years later. Both films were very poorly received. How, then, has such a mishandled franchise not only endured up to this point in the public psyche, but led to this week’s big budget sequel, directed by Nimrod Antal, and starring Academy Award winner Adrien Brody?

It was the Eighties, and Arnold Schwarzenegger had become the Hollywood action hero of choice, thanks to his impressive physique, and a string of formulaic hits such as Commando and Raw Deal, and the ground breaking Terminator. Jim and John Thomas’ screenplay for Predator was, as the story goes, the result of a joke that Sylvester Stallone would have to fight an alien in the next Rocky installment, having been victorious over a series of increasingly invincible opponents over the course of Rocky’s I through V.

The first Predator film played out very much like a cross between Rambo and Alien (indeed, the recently mooted Rambo concept of Rambo and company facing off against an alien monster may have been both an offshoot of this original idea, and shut down because of its similarities). A team of soldiers, deep in the Guatemalan jungle on a rescue mission, find themselves picked off one by one by an invisible, otherworldly assailant. Eventually, Schwarzenegger’s Dutch is the only character left, resulting in a Mano a Mano showdown which inevitably ends in the Governator’s victory.

As i mentioned at the beginning, it was a very formulaic, recognisable plot. There was one big factor, however, that helped it stand out. It wasn’t the fact that the cast included two future State Governors (Jesse Ventura and Arnie himself) and excellent Lethal Weapon screenwriter Shane Black (who was apparently chosen in part so he could keep an eye on rookie director John McTiernan). What made Predator better than Schwarzenegger’s usual shtick was the presence of a truly compelling foe. Where mostly he was known for taking apart faceless goons one by one until he met up with the B-movie villain of the piece, here the situation was more or less reversed. If it hadn’t been for the presence of the Austrian actor, the Predator himself would have been the star of the movie. The alien warrior was new and unique. Whilst the creature in Alien and its sequels was driven seemingly by pure animalistic instinct, the Predator had evolved technology, such as the thermal imaging capabilities, and a clear hide and strike, hunter’s mentality. In many ways this made the enemy the more compelling character.

With a $60m gross, and good critical reception, Predator was potentially a fantastic starting point for an interesting series of movies. Unfortunately, Predator 2 was not the right follow up. The series lost star Schwarzenegger to Terminator 2: Judgement Day, replacing him with a Danny Glover who was visibly too old too old for this s^&$. It also lost director McTiernan, who had directed Die Hard in the interim and turned down Predator 2 for The Hunt For Red October.

This time around, the Predator becomes mixed up in an inner city gang war, and is hunted by both a city cop and a task-force tasked with hunting down the otherworldly being. We learn a bit more about the creature, seeing more of his ship, and see several of his kind at the conclusion. Relocating the action to an inner city environment wasn’t necessarily a bad decision, but a combination of poor story, low star power, and unfulfilled potential left Predator 2 as a financial and critical failure, effectively killing the franchise as we knew it.

Well, not exactly. Whilst the botched production of Predator 2 left no money, and therefore no viability for a continuation of the movie series, the Predator character had taken on a cult status, and led to the Alien versus Predator comic and video game series. Predator had clear similarities to the Alien series, and the combination of the two creatures was an obvious, and compelling mix. The differences between their styles, the seemingly mindless, feral nature of the Aliens versus the almost human-like tribal, hunter-gatherer instincts of the Predators meant that two completely different cultures could be explored. With no clear hero and villain, and a seemingly level playing field, fans were free to choose their favourites.

The standalone Alien movie series also continued to be healthy, which meant that this inextricable link between the two beings greatly helped the Predator to stay in the public consciousness. By that token, the Predators stood to gain far more from the relationship, almost riding on Alien’s coat-tails. It was this rivalry, and the cult popularity of the Alien Versus Predator brand that led to Predator’s big screen resurrection, in the first Alien Vs Predators movie.

However, despite the continued success and interest for the Alien movie franchise, AVP was made with a considerably lower budget than was really required to do the concept justice. Though the movie tried to remain faithful to both creatures mythology, with director Paul WS Anderson shoehorning in as many references to their previous outings as he could muster, the storyline was generally pretty weak. It did have interesting ideas about how they existed together in their shared universe. The idea that young Predator’s were sent out to kill their first Alien as a right of passage was a great jumping off point, but the movie as a whole was very poorly written, acted, and produced. Cheap costumes meant that action sequences were reduced to fast cut, dark shadow combat, rendering these battles unwatchable. Though audiences had turned out to see the two great foes do battle, most of the movie followed the human contingent of the story, and movie goers felt seriously short changed.

AVP: Requiem was arguably even worse, coming across as a straight to DVD quality production, with 24′s Michelle Dessler (actress Reiko Aylesworth) as its biggest ‘star’. No money, no ideas, no chance. It was only the AVP brand’s cult status that drew any audience in at all. Alien Vs Predator; Requiem can only be considered a total failure, and really should have killed off both franchises. However, the continued popularity of the two is a clear argument that truly compelling protagonists can survive inept filmmaking.

Whilst AVP was dragging the two combatants names through the mud, a plan was afoot to revive the Predators in their own new standalone movie. Robert Rodriguez had originally been drafted to craft a script for a Predator movie shortly after the first film’s release, and when it was decided to revive the franchise, he was the obvious choice. Dusting off his old screenplay, the director set about rewriting it for a new sequel. The Sin City helmer’s Predators script almost completely disregards the Predator 2 follow up, and both AVP films, and works as more of a Predators to Predator as Aliens was to Alien.

Relocating the action to the Predator home planet, Predators reverts back to the original jungle setting , but where the original movie had humans battling the hunter on their own turf, here the humans find themselves out of their depth as they clash with different Predator tribes, in their own environment. The casting of The Pianist’s Adrien Brody was a surprising move, sort of a halfway house between Predator’s Schwarzenegger and Predator 2′s Glover. As far as acting ability goes, however, it is one giant leap.

This is a promising move, and suggests a much less formulaic storyline may lie in store. He is backed up by the brilliant Danny Trejo, a Robert Rodriguez favourite (having starred in From Dusk Til Dawn, Desperado etc…) along with Laurence Fishburne (The Matrix trilogy), Alice Braga (I Am Legend), Topher Grave (Spiderman 3), and Walton Goggins (TV’s Justified). The relocation to the Predator home planet suggests we may well learn more about their culture, history, and the source of their technological advancement. Predators has the potential to provide a really interesting plot, and allow for a far more compelling series that truly explores the full potential of the franchise. Director Nimrod Antal is also a potentially great choice. His first picture, Hungarian film Control, gained great critical success. He has yet to replicate that success in Hollywood, however, with previous work including 2007′s Vacancy, and the so-so Armoured from last year.

Despite the prequel projects that are underway for the Alien series, whilst the Alien movies best is probably behind them, the Predator’s series has yet to reach its heights. The far more sentient nature of the protagonists, and therefore the increased potential for Predator/Human interaction means that the possibilities for future Predator films are almost endless, withmany different directions that can be explored. Hopefully Predators will perform well both critically and financially, and allow for a new set of movies that live up to the expectations of the fans, and lead to far greater stories than we have previously seen cinematically for the intergalactic hunters.

The original Predator movie back in 1987 had a a simple idea, a simple script, and a great cast. Skip on nearly a quarter of a century and we see Predators coming back to the big screen courtesy of Robert Rodriguez serves as the film’s Producer! The original movie starred 80s hard-man turned Governator, Arnold Schwarzenegger, will the 21st Century cast live up to the high standard that he set?

The main star of the new Nimrod Antal directed movie is Oscar winning actor, Adrien Brody who we’ve never seen in an action movie before. He plays Royce, a ex-military black ops soldier who instinctively looks after himself before anyone else! The movie begins with Royce falling through the sky unconscious. Seconds pass and he’s awakes to realise that he’s plummeting to his death. A split second before he hits the earth, a parachute opens automatically and he crashes to the ground. Queue the rest of the cast which includes Alice Braga, Danny Trejo and Topher Grace all of whom has arrived on the planet the same way. Slowly they have to work out why they are there and what they need to do to survive.

Good news people…. I really enjoyed Predators. The movie takes us back to basics, uses very little CGI except on some of the effects and gunfire but primarily the movie is done with special effects and pyrotechnics which was very refreshing in a world where all movies have to have a quota of CGI. The tie in to the original movies was well scripted and fit in perfectly, although no mention was paid to Predator 2 or AVP which both would have happened after the events from the first movie and before this. Antal relies on his actors to give simplistic but powerful performances, most of which succeed. Lawrence Fishburne also appears in the movie in rather a dramatic way but is sadly underused.

The imagination of the death sequences has to be commended! Someone has obviously sat in a room for a long time thinking some of those up! They used the score from the original movie in Predators and it worked so well. The score alone was a fundamental part of why the original movie worked so well and the same can be said here. Some of the dialogue in the new movie is questionable (you’ll know which bits when you hear it!) but for the better part, the script and screenplay works in a movie which essentially revolves around a group of people walking through a jungle, works well.

Adrien Brody made a good action hero but he’s no Schwarzenegger – we knew that would be the case didn’t we? His chemistry with Alice Braga worked well and their relationship is believable but I wonder if they should have gone with someone a little more butch than Brody to pull off the lead role. The jungle acts as a character in itself making this movie claustrophobic, tense and enjoyable.

Predators is a good watch. If you loved the original, you may find holes in this new version but if you’re new to the Predator world, then i think you’re going to like it. The ending leads nicely into a sequel which, if this does well we’ll no doubt see in a year or two.

Earlier today I posted some new images from Predators which is released 8th July and stars Adrien Brody, Danny Trejo, Alice Braga, Lawrence Fishburne, Topher Grace, is directed by Nimród Antal and produced by Robert Rodríguez.

I mentioned in that post that the images were your ‘fix’ for the day but it turns out I was wrong as Trailer Addict have managed to get their hands on three, five minute featurettes showing B-Roll footage from behind the scenes on the Predators set. In total, there are 15 minutes of footage! It’s broken up into three different parts which I’ve embedded below.

Twentieth Century Fox have released what is likely to be the final character featurette for their new movie, Predators which is out on July 8th next week.

This new featurette fits in nicely with the previous that have been released for Predators which stars Adrien Brody, Danny Trejo, Alice Braga, Lawrence Fishburne, Topher Grace, is directed by Nimród Antal and produced by Robert Rodríguez.

Hanzo is played by by Louis Ozawa Changchien and in the featurette, Robert Rodriguez tells us a little more about his character. How he was born 1000 years too late and how really he’s a Samurai who never speaks and is very much the silent warrior.

There’s only a week to go until we get our look at the latest 80s franchise update to tear through the nostalgia barrier and arrive with the Nimrod Antal directed/Robert Rodriguez produced Predators, and in amongst the sheer tonnage of marketing there are still new sights to see.

There’s two new clips around today which have Adrien Brody, Alice Braga and friends working out where (and why) they are. In the first clip, the team have an interesting encounter with someone who is not what he seems, check that out below…

Then there is another nicely chosen clip to set the film up – it gives away the basic premise of the film, so keep out of the way if you want to be untrampled by the spoiler bus, but it’s very clear what Adrien Brody and his team of militarised misfits are doing in the jungle.

The clip is an exclusive to JoBlo and it’s well worth your time before the 8th of July hits and the Predators eat our eyeballs for popcorn.

When marketing films in different countries studios often focus the marketing materials on any characters or actors that they think will have a pull in that particular country.

Back when Cannonball Run was released, for instance, the posters in Hong Kong featured  Jackie Chan much more prominently than the film’s actual star, Burt Reynolds. A good recent example is the marketing in Japan for Inception which features Ken Watanabe much more prominently than he appears in the US marketing.

So for the new Japanese TV spot for Predators it is not surprising that the main character featured is the Yakuza Hanzo, played by Louis Ozawa Changchien.

I’ve got to admit that I loved it when I saw that there would be a sword wielding Yakuza in Predators so this TV spot is pretty well pitched at me too. Hopefully you’ll get a kick out of it too. Check it out embedded below.

I absolutely love this new trailer and the way it’s been cut together. The way it looks like it’s a lovely, peaceful, tranquil forest only to reveal it’s the forest from hell and is a hunting ground for hungry predators.

Any more images or trailers from Nimrod Antal’s Predators get released and we’ll have seen it all, so ubiquitous has this marketing push been.

Having said that nothing so far has disappointed and this particular weekend sees our US cousins get not one, but two big screen 80s reboots in the form of The A-Team and The Karate Kid, and the early birds are tweeting that they’re not too bad.

So hope abounds for Robert Rodriguez’s next producing gig where he’ll throw a thousand volts through the corpse of the Predator series and in this new TV spot there’s some new footage to intrigue and seduce you into speculation – what was that flying thing? Do Predators have an equivalent of hunting dogs? When is the film out anyway?

By now you’ll have seen so many Predators posters that one more won’t hurt, and with Nimrod Antal’s film out in a few weeks this new poster calls back to one of the defining images of the original.

The whole thermal imaging thing worked well in the previous Predator films, and it’s nice to see the marketing people use it here for this new image of Adrien Brody and Alice Braga.

It’s a pretty low res version, I’m guessing someone snapped this with their phone camera and so far it’s the best we’ve got so be thankful for small mercies.

So, if you still ain’t got time to bleed take a look, and prepare for the Predators to finally be unleashed at the start of July.

Sony have sent me their latest released, Armored on Blu Ray to review. The movie is directed by Nimród Antal and has an all-star cast which includes Matt Dillon, Jean Reno, Laurence Fishburne, Milo Ventimiglia, Columbus Short, Skeet Ulrich and Fred Ward. This cast alone tells you the movie has the potential to be a good one but is it?

Well, I saw this movie in the cinema and when i reviewed it, I gave it an average rating, but one thing I did say was:

“I’d watch Armored again on DVD and would recommend you go and see it… if you like your action movies big, loud and bassy, then this one is for you!”

With that in mind, I have to say that my home viewing of Armored was spot on. With my surround sound cranked up to 11 and my beverage of choice in hand, I sat back and really enjoyed the movie. Armored is about a group of armoured car drivers / transporters who decide that it’s about time they steal the money that they’re transporting rather than just carrying from one bank to another. The only trouble is, the end goal doesn’t quite go to plan.

I’m sure that the constant drip feeding of images, posters and trailers from the Nimrod Antal directed Predators has created the right amount of buzz for Robert Rodriguez’s alien hunters, and now there’s two new posters to further whet your voracious appetite.

Nothing much new here but it’s still good to see Adrien Brody and Alice Braga tooled up and ready to face whatever Antal and Rodriguez have in store for them. Brody and Braga star along with Danny Trejo, Laurence Fishburne, Topher Grace and Walter Goggins to make up a nicely eclectic cast.

Here’s a bit of an odd one. 3 new posters have been released for Nimród Antal’s new Predators movie but they’re all English posters and have been released on 3 different Italian websites.

BadTaste.it , ScreenWeek.it and ComingSoon.it all have slightly different variations on the theme with Adrien Brody as the centerpiece in all three of them. I really like these posters though and I’m very much looking forward to seeing the finished version of the movie.

Director Nimrod Antal has assembled a fine cast and in this image below we can see Adrien Brody, Alice Braga and Walter Goggins happening upon a skull strewn battlefield, looking nice and afraid.

The more I see of this film the more I like it, the trailer worked perfectly as a tease to the fans of the series and hearing Rodriguez and writer Alex Litvak talk about their aim to stay true to what made the original so compelling is refreshing.

Predators is out in the US in July and we here in the UK get it a few weeks after. Can’t wait.

I’m sure you’ve seen enough of the forthcoming Robert Rodriguez produced Predators to convince you that this is no mere rehash of an 80s monster movie.

Adrift in the torrent of publicity we’ve seen of the Nimrod Antal directed picture, due out in the States in July, are numerous stills, a great trailer and some nicely produced character featurettes (check them all out here).

The good guys at /Film showed off their new picture of Laurence Fishburne as the (other)world-weary warrior Noland, and if you’re in the mood to find out even more about Fishburne’s character you can check out the featurette here.

You can’t accuse Robert Rodriguez of not taking his producing duties seriously – the guy is a Predators marketing machine and in this new video he’s introducing us another of the Predators cast – Laurence Fishburne’s Noland.

When it was announced that Fishburne was joining the Predators cast there was a positive reaction from the expectant Predators fanbase and while we’ve seen numerous Predators featurettes (all of which you can find here – there’s plenty to catch up on) we’ve not seen so much of his character thus far.

As with all these featurettes Rodriguez is front and centre, talking about Noland’s place in the film and it is well worth a watch if you’re keeping up with this one.
