Lee Daniels began lining up a terrific cast for his follow-up to the Oscar-winning Precious earlier this year, when Zac Efron, Matthew McConaughey, Tobey Maguire, and Sofía Vergara were announced as coming on board The Paperboy.

After a bit of a cast change-up, switching Maguire for John Cusack and Vergara for Nicole Kidman, and adding David Oyelowo to the list, filming got underway through the year and the project is now in post-production, expected to be released sometime next year.

We’ve now got a terrific first poster from the film, courtesy of The Film Stage, with Efron front and centre on this, looking excellent. Sitting beside him, unless I’m wildly mistaken, is Kidman who looks pretty damn transformed for the role.

“A directionless young man helps his reporter brother investigate the possible wrongful conviction of a man on death row, and in the process, falls for the woman whom the convict has been romancing through prison correspondence.”

The script comes from Pete Dexter, who has adapted his own 1995 novel of the same name, and this first official look at the film really does look good. Efron has been diversifying his career a little in the past few years, which I think has been a great move by him. We’ll next get to see him in The Lucky One next May, the adaptation of Nicholas Sparks’ original novel, and judging by the trailer we saw for it earlier this month, that should be excellent too.

I initially thought that McConaughey would be playing the villain in this thriller, but that role is instead going to be taken by Cusack, who I can’t wait to see playing the antagonist. By all accounts, this is something to look forward to, and Daniels has set up a fantastic cast for the project. No word yet on exactly when we can look forward to seeing it in cinemas, but with this first poster arriving, hopefully it means that a release date is just on the horizon, along with the concurrent ad campaign. As usual, click to enlarge.

In what sounds like a reworking of mid-nineties schlocky sci-fi/horror Species, The Avengers star is an extra terrestrial who takes the form of a beautiful woman as a cunning ruse to entrap human prey. Ooh err!

If you’re thinking the above doesn’t sound particularly promising, the good news is this sci-fi drama (entitled Under the Skin) is being directed by Sexy Beast’s Jonathan Glazer. The film marks his first big-screen outing since 2004’s underappreciated Nicole Kidman-headliner Birth, and based on a novel by the celebrated Dutch-born author Michael Faber, it’s safe to say this material will probably be as far removed from the aforementioned Roger Donaldson-directed creature feature as humanly possible.

If I think if two people in movies that are least likely to become a married couple, I think it would have to be these too! Yes they are both awesome but are they awesome together?

Anyway, what’s done is done and they have both been cast in new movie, Trespass which has so far had an absolutely terrible poster and an average trailer. I guess time will tell but in the meantime, we’ve got a nice new clip from the movie here for your viewing pleasure!

I’m hoping that the saving grace for this movie is that Joel Schumacher directed it so all is not lost yet!

From what I can find, Trespass is released in the UK October 16th. This new clip comes from Entertainment Tonight.

Tigerland and Phone Booth were quiet but effective and his work since then has had its moments, even if little of it can be said to be an unqualified success.

His latest outing pulls in some heavyweight acting talent in Academy Award winners Nic Cage and Nicole Kidman as a couple terrorised by home invaders, who are looking to gain entry to a secure vault in their home. From the trailer we’ve added below, it can seen that there is a certain sheen and polish to the film, rather than the grit and grime of others within the genre, though the on-screen titles do suggest that at some point Cage and Kidman will fight back.

Will the end product be derivative and predictable, or will we get something more edgy and unconventional? One can only assume there will be a pull-the-rug-out twist thingy, such is the norm for thrillers these days, but we’ll have to reserve judgment until this one sees the light of day – 14th October 2011 in the USA, presumably elsewhere shortly afterwards.

Thanks to Rope of Silicon for bringing the source for this one.

Below is his entire body of feature film work in list form and all you have to do is vote for your all-time fav! I know this is going to be next to (Mission) impossible since he’s made so many classics but one and one only is what you must choose.

Will it be the obvious Top Gun or will it be the Irish attempts in Far and Away?! “I do not wish ta fight yeeer” he states to a horse before punching it in the face! Classic. Could it be Days of Thunder where we see Top Gun re-enacted in car form. Could it be Jerry Maguire where we see him acting opposite the cutest five year old you’ve ever seen or do we move forward some years to see him play rude and obnoxious millionaire Les Grossman in Tropic Thunder?! Oh so many classics to choose from.

Anyway, without further ado, it’s time to pick you favourite Tom Cruise movie. Choose wisely otherwise you might end up like Julian Glover in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade!

List is in alphabetical order.

Note: There is a poll embedded within this post, please visit the site to participate in this post's poll.

Whether you’re a fully-fledged cineaste, or just possess a casual interest, there’s something for anyone with our alternative A-Z of cinema, which starts today and runs through the week.

If you’ve ever wondered just what it is an Executive Producer does, or maybe if you’ve heard the ambient sounds of Tangerine Dream in an 80’s film favourite without knowing who you were listening to, this is the list for you!

Here are the letters K-O…

King Vidor (1894 – 1982) was an American film director, producer and screenwriter whose career spanned nearly seven decades. He resides in the Guinness Book of World Records for having the longest career of any film director (it began in 1913 and ending in 1980). In 1979 he was awarded an Honorary Academy Award, having been nominated five previous times for a Best Director Oscar.

To give you an idea of how young cinema was when a teenage Vidor first caught a glimpse of his future, it was during a visit to see his first film (A Trip to the Moon by Georges Méliès), which happens to be one of the earliest films ever made.

Vidor’s first venture into sound was 1929’s Hallelujah!, a groundbreaking film which featured an African-American cast and established the new language for sound films. He was also one of a number of famous directors at the time, to work, uncredited, on the classic The Wizard of Oz (1939).

Linda Manz (1961-) is an actress who appeared in a couple of memorable and influential cult features towards the end of the seventies. Her distinctive, androgynous look caught the attention of Terrence Malick who cast her as the young narrator in his second film (1978’s Days of Heaven), but Manz is arguably best known for her appearance in the 1979 film The Wanderers, where she played the antagonistic girlfriend of the leader of the fearsome street gang The Baldies.

In 1980, Manz starred alongside Dennis Hopper in Out of the Blue (his first directorial effort since 1971’s ill-fated The Last Movie). The film competed for the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival in that same year.

Absent from cinema screens for over a decade now, her only remaining roles post-1980 were in a handful of films towards the end of the noughties, including a small part in David Fincher’s The Game and a bigger one in Harmony Korine’s 1997 mid-west oddity Gummo.

Mumblecore is an American independent film movement which began life with the release of 2005’s Funny Ha Ha, a low-budget character piece by filmmaker Andrew Bujalski. It is primarily characterised by a modest production (often employing digital video cameras), focusing on personal relationships between twentysomethings, improvised scripts, and non-professional actors.

The name was actually coined by a sound editor on one of the early films and reflects, to some extent, the semi-improvisational, sometimes inaudible speech inflections delivered by some of the performers involved. Filmmakers in this field include Lynn Shelton, Bujalski, Mark and Jay Duplass, Aaron Katz and Joe Swanberg.

The Duplass brother scored a recent mainstream success by using many elements of Mumblecore within the studio system (Fox Searchlight) and with big name actors (John C. Reilly, Jonah Hill, Marisa Tomei and Catherine Keener) in last year’s dark comedy Cyrus. Bujalski’s third independent feature Beeswax was released last year to great acclaim and praise.

Ned Ryerson is a character from much-loved comedy Groundhog Day played by “I know the face, not sure about the name” supporting actor Stephen Tobolowsky. Ryerson the is supremely annoying insurance salesman and former high school classmate of Phil Connors (Bill Murray) whom he has the unpleasant misfortune of running into every morning as he continually relives the one day.

Tales from the set of this film have been covered a number of times in Tobolowsky’s Podcast series, The Tobolowsky Files. A jovial and erudite storyteller, the actor (who has appeared in more than 200 films and TV show throughout his career) shares both personal and industry-based stories in each instalment.

Tobolowsky was actually reunited with Murray 11 years on from ‘Groundhog’ when they both appeared in the movie version of the comic strip Garfield. Probably safe to say it wasn’t a reunion which either actor celebrate. “Bing!!!!”

Ozploitation films are a type of low-budget horror, comedy and action (sometimes combining all three genres) features which were predominant in Australia from the early 1970’s to late 80’s. Made after the introduction of the R rating in 1971, filmmakers took full advantage of the new liberal landscape, and created a number of exploitation films with distinctly antipodean sensibilities.

Mad Max is perhaps the most famous example from the New Wave era, but there were many other notable films, including Alvin Purple (a crude sex comedy featuring Animal Kingdom co-star and Oscar nominee from this year, Jacki Weaver), Razorback, Roadgames, The Man from Hong Kong, BMX Bandits (starring a teenage Nicole Kidman) and Turkey Shoot.

The term Ozploitation was first used in 2008’s revealing and often hilarious documentary on the movement, Not Quite Hollywood. Quentin Tarantino (one of the interviewees and an unsurprising vocal admirer of the films produced) coined the phrase Aussiesploitation, which documentary director Mark Hartley then shortened to Ozploitation.

If there’s a romcom on the horizon, chances are it stars romcom babe Jen Aniston playing her usual tart but loveably dizzy character – not far removed from her Rachel days in fact. So, without knowing much more, the film immediately sparks interest.

But Aniston teamed up with manly hunk Gerry Butler in The Bounty Hunter last year, and that stank to high heaven. So, Aniston opposite ‘asexual’ Adam Sandler (sorry, Adam) seems a little far-fetched in the chemistry stakes. Sandler may always want to come across as your average man’s man, the likeable ‘guy next door’ – a comfortable stance to take, but setting the gorgeous Aniston’s heart a flutter in a film seems a long stretch.

Well, Aniston helps by dumbing it down for starters in this, playing Katherine, a single mom with two (irritating) kids who is not only Sandler as plastic surgeon Danny’s office manager/medical assistant, but his best friend, and the one who (surprise, surprise) knows him best. After keeping the ‘downtrodden married man’ routine going when an attempt at getting hitched turns sour, Danny finds the woman of his dreams in Palmer, a stunning blonde maths teacher (played by swimwear model Brooklyn Decker) at least 10 years his junior, and tries to convince her he’s the genuine article. Along comes Katherine as the ‘fake ex’ to save the day, and help spin one big fat lie after another. As you can guess, the Doc sees sense at the last minute, and the rest is history in glorious Hawaii.

Aniston attempting to look dowdy aside – greasy hair, specs and a pashmina is not going to convince anyone, there is a warmly witty banter going on between Aniston and Sandler to enjoy that seems effortless. Naturally, neither offers anything new to their history of romcom appearances – including their bog-standard attire, with Sandler still dressed in his trademark baggy jeans as a plastic surgeon (come on), and Aniston letting those famous tanned pins out for an airing in some of the best footwear of the season.

For us females who often scowl and covet for Aniston’s toned physique, there’s an added secret pleasure. It’s the biggest question of the lot: Who’s the fittest in the itsy, bitsy bikini? Aniston or Decker? There is a Bo Derek 10 moment when bikini babe Palmer comes out of the water like a lost Bond girl who’s just gone for a quick ocean swim, so even before you get to the ‘girl pissing contest’ by the Hawaiian waterfall, Decker’s in the lead for the gong for ‘top totty’. Move over, Jen. And to add to the fortysomething’s woes, Decker is a nice surprise – yes, the model can act, and actually gets to deliver some funny lines, albeit in a goofy manner. It’s no easy feat either, considering whom she plays opposite. The only bile-inducing moment is when they wheel in her real-life hubby, Andy Roddick, for a magical meeting cameo in the Mile High club.

The comedy show stealer by far, though, is Nicole Kidman as the ultra-competitive Devlin Adams, Katherine’s acidic-tongued and insensitive school nemesis who has ‘foot-in-mouth’ disease. Kidman in a part against type is utterly hilarious and has an obvious ball in the process, so this comes across well. Musician Dave Matthews is her equally nauseating husband, Ian Maxtone Jones, supposed iPad inventor, who’s in denial of a different sort. There’s a ‘coconut decider’ that involves Devlin, Ian, Katherine and Danny that’s a real hula howler.

The film also stars Nick Swardson as Danny’s egit cousin Eddie, who comes along for the paradise ride, and pretends to be a sheep exporter and Katherine’s new flame as part of the plan. His appearances turn the film back into a Sandler schoolboy farce, but they detract some of the idiocy away from Sandler who comes across as a wiser being in this.

There are the token kiddies meant to twang the heartstrings, with Bailee Madison as a little Cockney (in the very loosest terms) haggler and Griffin Gluck as her shy brother, Michael, who wants to swim with the dolphins – queue Hawaii. As young actors go, they irritate the hell out of you as they try to be as funny and quirky as their adult counterparts, but are a necessary evil in the plot. The film also has some highly bizarre injects of ‘humorous’ scenarios or set-up shots, like the kid getting Mom with a drink in the car park as Danny’s ‘family’ stride with purpose towards the camera in the background. It’s one of the many slow-mo moments for those who haven’t quite realised how stunning Katherine/Aniston is now she’s all scrubbed up. Plus Palmer does a proper slow-mo Bo moment for sheer titillating purposes, so something for the boys to enjoy.

As the title suggests: just go with it, and take it how you think it will be – you’ll be spot on, either way. You will find some sunshine laughs, though. This isn’t a Devlin by far – you need to see the film to understand this in context, but rest assured there will be plenty using this turn of phrase afterwards, so pity any real Devlins out there. There are far worse romcoms out there at present – not looking at anyone in particular, Kate Hudson…

Becca (Nicole Kidman) and Howie Corbett (Aaron Eckhart) are a happily married couple whose perfect world is forever changed when their young son, Danny (Phoenix List), is killed by a car.

Becca tries to redefine her existence in a surreal landscape of well-meaning family and friends. Her experiences lead her to find solace in a mysterious relationship with a troubled young comic-book artist, Jason (Miles Teller) – the teenage driver of the car that killed Danny.

Becca’s fixation with Jason pulls her away from memories of Danny, while Howie immerses himself in the past, seeking refuge in outsiders who offer him sympathy and condolences. The couple, both adrift, make disconcerting and hazardous choices as they find ways to cope with their loss.

Rabbit Hole, based on a stage play by David Lindsay-Abaire’s, is a piercing portrait of a couple struggling to cope with the death of their son. Lindsay-Abaire, who also wrote the screenplay, provides an surprisingly funny, intensely honest insight into how grief can affect people and force them in opposing directions. The writing is witty – sometimes crushing, sometimes nasty – cleverly punctuating the overriding sense of despair, which, in tell, provides hope to the couple and their future.

John Cameron Mitchell’s direction is nuanced and fraught, encapsulating the grief with a certain level of restraint that manages to keep us far enough out-with the emotional core of the film, so not to become too troubled by the distressed subject-matter. The emotional outbursts are as accustomed as they are agonising, accentuated perfectly by Kidman and Eckhart’s, whose raw performances never lets the material slip into the melodrama.

The performances from the entire cast are irreproachable. Kidman’s Becca is fragile and antsy, abandoned by her friends and former colleagues she lashes out at her family’s clumsy efforts to help. It’s clear that there is no way of curing the feeling of grief that’s become central to her being, when everyday life and occurrences become harrowing remembrances.

Eckhart’s Howie, on the other hand, is a less intricate but no less integral character, one that naturally exudes warmth and affection. He’s the devoted husband – and former father – who eats, sleeps and breathes his family. Even after all they’ve been through, he still has the desire, and strength, to fight to save his broken marriage.

Rabbit Hole is an impressively crafted, highly emotive and competent piece of cinema, bolstered by stand-out performances from Kidman and Eckhart.

Directed by John Cameron Mitchell (Shortbus), Rabbit Hole stars Nicole Kidman (Australia), Aaron Eckhart (Thank You For Smoking), Sandra Oh (Sideways), Dianne Wiest (Synecdoche, New York), Miles Teller (The Unusuals) and Tammy Blanchard (The Good Shepherd).

The film will be released in the UK on February 4, 2011 and has already received several award nominations, in particular for Kidman’s affecting performance as Becca Corbett.

Rabbit Hole is a vivid, hopeful, honest and unexpectedly witty portrait of a family searching for what remains possible in the most impossible of all situations. Becca and Howie Corbett (Kidman and Eckhart) are returning to their everyday existence in the wake of a shocking, sudden loss. Just eight months ago, they were a happy suburban family with everything they wanted. Now, they are caught in a maze of memory, longing, guilt, recrimination, sarcasm and tightly controlled rage from which they cannot escape. While Becca finds pain in the familiar, Howie finds comfort. The shifts come in abrupt, unforeseen moments. Becca hesitantly opens up to her opinionated, loving mother (Wiest) and secretly reaches out to the teenager involved in the accident that changed everything (Teller); while Howie lashes out and imagines solace with another woman (Oh). Yet, as off track as they are, the couple keeps trying to find their way back to a life that still holds the potential for beauty, laughter and happiness. The resulting journey is an intimate glimpse into two people learning to re-engage with each other and a world that has been tilted off its axis.

Well, they’ve released a new TV Spot and a poster for it anyway! Rabbit Hole also stars Aaron Eckhart, Diane Wiest and is directed by John Cameron Mitchell. We placed the trailer a while back which you can see here but scroll down to view this new poster which comes courtesy of Cinematical while the TV spot comes from MovieWeb and the clip from Yahoo.

I love this poster. It’s so nice to see some originality coming through from the guys who’ve been tasked with the design. What do you think? Let us know in the comments section below.

Synopsis: Becca and Howie Corbett are returning to their everyday existence in the wake of a shocking, sudden loss. Becca hesitantly opens up to her opinionated, loving mother and secretly reaches out to the teenager involved in the accident that changed everything; while Howie lashes out and imagines solace with another woman. Yet, as off track as they are, the couple keeps trying to find their way back to a life that still holds the potential for beauty, laughter and happiness.

Rabbit Hole should be with us 4th February 2011.

Aaron Eckhart has some pretty impressive work on his CV. Despite appearing in Stupid Movie Physics-favourite The Core, he has racked up top-drawer work in Erin Brockovich, Thank You For Smoking, The Dark Knight, The Pledge and In The Company Of Men.

Add to that his upcoming appearance alongside Nicole Kidman in festival-favourite Rabbit Hole, a return to bigger budgets with next year’s World Invasion: Battle LA and now, “The Expatriate”.

In The Expatriate, Eckhart will play a former CIA operative, estranged from his daughter, who takes a job in Belgium as security advisor for a multi-national corporation, only to turn up for his first day at work and find that the company doesn’t exist, his colleagues are nowhere to be found and his assistant is an assassin who intends to kill him and his daughter.

They promptly go on the run together, trying to mend their relationship, while dealing with the fallout from his daughter finding out about his past with the CIA (which, of course, she was previously unaware of). It doesn’t feel like too much of a stretch to surmise that in the course of surviving the attentions of a trained killer, father and daughter reconnect and healing and forgiveness flow. Hopefully there’s a lot of running, shooting and fighting as well.

Philipp Stolzl (North Face) will direct from A E Amel’s script.
