Martin (Andy Nyman) is a meek and somewhat feeble man who loses his well paid job and instead of telling his wife decides to continue ‘going to work’.

Every day he gets dressed, has breakfast, takes a pack lunch from his wife Julie (Neve Campbell), kisses her on the cheek and sets off. He has nowhere to go though. A man clearly defined to some degree by his financial status he is lost, he’s floundering and unable to get a grip back on his life.

When he visits his old office to contest a bad reference he’s been given he is treated like a pariah, an edict has been made by his old boss that he is to be ignored, not spoken to, that if he approaches one of his old colleagues they are to treat him as if he’s not there. Leaving the office he seeks refuge in an ice cream parlour but upon leaving to take a phone call from his wife he is mugged. He’s not mugged at gun point or knife point though, he is simply bullied into submission, giving up his expensive watch to someone who intimidates him. The scene is heartbreaking and hard to watch and Nyman’s performance is filled with powerful pathos.

Returning home his wife confronts him about an answer phone message that seems to suggest he’s having an affair but the real story behind the message is related to his unemployment. Even when put in this difficult position Martin refuses to reveal the fact that he’s lost his job to his wife, the shame he feels  is clearly powerful.

The argument over but unresolved his wife takes to bed heavily sedated and Martin receives a visit from a ‘heavy’ (played with seemingly effortless class by James Cosmo), someone who he now owes money to and is intent on collecting. Striking a deal Martin agrees to go with this stranger and carry out an undisclosed task in exchange for his debt being wiped clean. The film then moves into darker and more mysterious areas, never losing the pathos and intensity of what has gone before, and arrives at a surprising and thought-provoking climax.

The end of The Glass Man will most likely be the talking point for many when the film finally sees a wide release, but the meat of the film is really in everything that has gone before. With a thinly drawn but wholly convincing relationship between Martin and Julie providing an emotional backdrop to the film, the core of the drama that plays out in this taut thriller all rests on the character of Martin and the extraordinary portrayal of this broken man by Nyman.

Director Solimeno does an excellent job of ensuring that the story is told visually and Martin’s emotional state is often conveyed through the composition. Whilst the skilful use of mise-en-scene to tell the story, rather than a reliance on overly explicit dialogue, is to be commended, the framing and lighting is a little rough around the edges in places and not always up to the standard one expects from cinematic features. The sound mix is also technically very shoddy, possibly in part due to the rush to get the film to the screen at FrightFest, but the actual use of the sound mix and the highly effective score adds greatly to the cumulative effect of the drama unfolding.

Whilst the narrative twists that occur later in the film may not add up entirely the story presented on screen is utterly enthralling and Nyman’s central performance is absolutely wonderful.

‘The woman who will not die’, Sidney Prescott, re-surfaces again in a fourth outing, along with embattled characters, the amicable Sheriff Dewey Riley and fearsome reporter Gale Weathers in yet another Wes Craven directed installment of the Scream franchise.

Without giving the game away (because we’re embargoed to the hilt) and spoiling the ending, or revealing the kill scenes and who remains alive, suffice to say there is always someone left standing to tell the tale, or there’s absolutely no point to the whole thing.

The story still follows Sidney (Neve Campbell), now the author of a self-help book, who returns home to Woodsboro for her last book-signing date and to stay with family, only for the dreaded nightmare that made her a celebrity to start all over again. This sees her reconnecting with Dewey (David Arquette) and Weathers (Courteney Cox), who are now a married couple, to try and save the town in danger from Ghostface.

Although all the old faces are back – and some more polished than others, mainly Cox in full cougar appearance who renders ex-real-life hubby Arquette a little older and wearier than his years, this film offers some welcome new faces and fresh blood (no pun intended), including Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere. The latter gives the fifteen-year-old franchise a much-needed lease of life and cool factor. Fans of the franchise get the originals, including their heroine Sidney, merely playing a familiar part, and some newbies in the same generic package, following similar plot patterns and throwing out red herrings as in the previous films.

However, eleven years on from the last, Scream 4 is very much more tech savvy in today’s terms, as well as self aware in ‘what makes a successful slasher film’. There is also a lot more parody at play. But Craven still uses the reliable stalker telephone call to bring a very real sense of dread – and hearing it still manages to send a chill down the spine. What’s not necessarily scary anymore is seeing the ghoul leaping around like it’s on fire – spoilt by seeing too much Scream fancy dress at Halloween, or hearing the black-and-white killer’s comical gruff telephone manner. That said the premise of the bogeyman lurking in the obvious horror-film hideouts is fully explored in this and challenged, and it certainly delivers its fair share of jumpy moments.

With a film conscious of being the very best scary movie it can be, Scream writer Kevin Williamson has upped his game and taken on board things that did not make sense in Scream 3 – reverting back to the original films’ ideas even, to deliver a more realistic explanation. And it works in some clever self diagnosis and previous Craven cinematic greats within some snappily edited sequences.

Basically, Scream 4 is much the same bag of bloody gory tricks but with more geek gadgets and a far better and more inventive plot, so fans can breathe a sigh of relief and revel in one more outing to support Ghostface in his body count: Does Sidney finally meet her maker? We can’t say, but it’s touch and go at times…

Today’s addition is another international poster, declaring that for a new decade, there are new rules. Those rules presumably resulting in lots of blood and dead bodies. Again. Whether this means that “no-one is safe” this time around and some top-billed stars will get filleted, we can but dream.

Let’s be clear – this is not Vivian Kubrick’s The Making of “The Shining” so don’t expect a bad word to be said about the parody beyond parody that the Scream series had become by the third film and instead watch and learn why you should be looking forward to the new film from John Craven’s strange older brother.

The main reason Screamholics should be clicking below is that the people at MakingOf.com always do a fine job and Craven is at his most interesting when talking about his motives for making these films. Newcomers Emma Roberts and Hayden Panettiere talk about their roles and it’s easy to forget that they were probably still in nappies when the first Scream film came about.

Anyhoo – Scream 4 is coming. Nothing can stop it. Here’s a little peek at how and why they made it.

Emma Roberts (It’s Kind of a Funny Story) is attached to star in coming-of-age drama Adult World.

The film, to be directed by Scott Coffey (Ellie Parker), centers on a Stanford grad (Roberts) with dreams of becoming a poet who gets stuck working in a mom-and-pop bookstore.

According to sources, offers are out for a male counterpart as well as an older character but, as of yet, no one has been officially cast.

Roberts will next be seen in the slasher sequel Scream 4, alongside Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette.

Cristian Solimeno’s forthcoming film The Glass Man has been on our radar for a while now, the independent British thriller has Andy Nyman, James Cosmo and Neve Campbell as its leads and is currently shooting in London.

The Facebook page for the film continues as the place to be when it comes to updates with new stills released all the time, and tonight they pointed me to the film’s official website which had a sparkly new trailer to show off.

Featuring more Neve Campbell, this trailer expands on the premise as teased in our first look at the film, that of a man whose past catches up with him in the form of debt collector James Cosmo who turns up one night to claim his debt one way or another. Cosmo remains a truly terrifying presence particularly when set against Nyman’s obsequious failed banker and as you’ll see from the new trailer there’s an excellent mix of the terrifying and a decent line in gallows humour. Things, it seems, will not end well come the morning light.

Oh, and something I spotted…

…and despite a thriving cottaging industry in the public toilets a few streets away nothing exciting every happened like shotguns and shouting. Probably for the best really.

The poster for the first Scream movie had its cast lined up like lambs to the slaughter, and so popular was this design that it was copied by many of the films influenced by Wes Craven’s slasher, so it’s nice to see this new Mexican poster goes back to basics and gives us the familiar design

Even before the film was announced there were fan made posters for Scream 4 plastered upon the walls of the internet, mostly based around the spooky visage of Ghostface.

It’s certainly an iconic image and the marketing team behind Wes Craven’s latest entry in the horrorshow series clearly think so and have released a new poster and it’s pretty neat.

Though, as the tagline has it, it’s a new decade we’ve still yet to see how new this new film will be. Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette return to welcome new Scream alum Emma Roberts, Hayden Panettiere, Adam Brody, Anthony Anderson and Alison Brie.Who will last to the end credits is anyone’s guess. I still reckon Neve Campbell will be in the Drew Barrymore role this time round.

New Scream 4 picture time, and it’s no surprise that newcomer to the series Emma Roberts shares a few dicey moments with Ghostface, who returns with Neve Campbell, Courtney Cox and David Arquette to torment and tear up the latest gaggle of teens in the fourth Scream movie.

My hope is that the twist will reveal that the  man behind the mask is Craven himself and this is some kind of New Nightmare for the twenty-first century. Any chance of that? Not really, but an effective horror film, no matter how Scooby Doo it is, will always find an audience, so hopefully there’s enough spark and wit in this one to fill the next two films in the proposed trilogy.
