Having spent his childhood training at the instruction of Zeus (Luke Evans – in the guise of John Hurt so that he doesn’t break his own law forbidding divine interference), Theseus (Henry Cavill) finds himself thrust into battle when the King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) destroys his village and kills his mother in search of the legendary Epirus Bow. Joining forces with the virgin oracle (Freida Pinto) and a repentant thief (Stephen Dorff), Theseus must find the bow first and overcome the King’s army if he is to stop the Titans from being released and war spreading to the heavens.

Much has been made of the fact that Immortals is the new 300, the new Clash of the Titans and as such a joyless update of any old sword and sandal epic worth its green-screen. It’s true, just like its spiritual forebears, Immortals is almost uniformly devoid of recognisable pulse, expending disproportionately more effort on style and perfectly glistening sinew than it does on such elements as character and story. Essentially a mash-up of the most recognisable Greek myths (will someone please retire the poor Minotaur), Immortals may even boast the most derivative plot to date.

What most critics are downplaying, however, is just how striking Tarsem Singh’s film actually is. While a particularly impressive example of set design or gorgeously composed set piece might be little substitute for an involving story, some of Immortals’ imagery goes beyond petty window dressing. Without wishing to sound conceited, there were moments during Immortals that verged on visual poetry: taken out of context, the images of writhing titans and herculean struggle verge on artistry – accidentally (very clearly accidentally) drawing comparison to such formalist works as Sergei Paradjanov’s The Colour of Pomegranates – unceremoniously spoiled by the Hollywood necessity for stock characters, truncated subtext and a creaky, uninspiring plot.

Immortals is intended as a tent-pole movie, however, and it is in this vein that director Tarsem Singh fails unequivocally; while it may boast a commendably unabashed portrait of the gods, and a cinematography that goes beyond 300′s chroma key technique, it lacks the personality of the infinitely more enjoyable Thor. Henry Cavill is more muscle than man; Freida Pinto a love interest before she is an individual and Micky Rourke, well, Micky Rourke is Iron Man 2′s Ivan Vanko transposed to ancient Greece. For all the slow motion, stereoscopy and needless grew, this couldn’t be any less engaging if it tried. There are no stakes, nobody to invest in and nothing to distract you from the encroaching tedium.

This really is encapsulated in the final conflict, in which King Hyperion’s needlessly colossal army lines up outside the Hellenic stronghold, the bow in their grasp. As Freida Pinto heroically sits the ensuing battle out, leaving Theseus to give one of the least convincing speeches ever written by a professional writer, we are left to watch as an endless reel of extras massacre one another to absolutely no effect. Even when our heroes – Theseus and the suddenly active Olympians – do battle with Hyperion and the Titans respectively, the fight scenes are so lacking in stakes that you really don’t care that Heaven is apparently short of a few gods. It’s not exactly what myths are made of.

While Immortals is unfortunately guilty of just about every criticism you are likely to throw at it – the glacial pacing, the hand-carved performances and the general inconsequence of its ending – there is one thing which ultimately marks it out as more than simply 300-lite and Clash of the Titans reheated: a genuine degree of artistic merit. A Greecian statue writ large, Immortals is as beautiful as is it is lifelessly rendered in stone.

**~~~ (2/5)

The featurette focuses around the production design for the movie which, although is CGI heavy, was still reliant on real sets to compliment the CG and to make it look as good as it possibly can. In the featurette, we get to hear from Executive Producer Tommy Turtle, Director Tarsem Singh and Supervising Art Director Michael Manson. Scroll down to have a little watch and click here to see all our Immortals coverage so far.

Immortals stars Mickey Rourke, Kellan Lutz, Henry Cavill, John Hurt, Isabel Lucas, Luke Evans and Stephen Dorff.

Visionary director Tarsem Singh (The Cell, The Fall) transports us in this epic tale of treachery, vengeance and destiny in Immortals, a stylish and visually spectacular 3D action adventure. As a power-hungry king razes ancient Greece in search of a legendary weapon, a heroic young villager rises up against him in a thrilling quest as timeless as it is powerful.
The brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) and his murderous Heraklion army rampage across Greece in search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world. With ruthless efficiency, Hyperion and his legions destroy everything in their wake, and it seems nothing will stop the evil king’s mission.

As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus (Henry Cavill) vows to avenge his mother, who was killed in one of Hyperion’s brutal raids. When Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Freida Pinto), her disturbing visions of the young man’s future convince her that he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final, desperate battle for the future of humanity. Immortals is produced by Gianni Nunnari (300), Mark Canton (300) and Ryan Kavanaugh (The Fighter).

Anyway, with news that William Monaghan is now on board to get the script finished, we can only hope that the speculated shooting period of early 2012 will not prove to be another false dawn. Frank Miller gave more reassurance by discussing with MTV recently a bit more information about the stories that seem likely to find their way into the latest set of overlapping episodes.

A Dame to Kill For seems set to be the main story, which involves characters such as Gail, Miho and Manute (which may therefore see Michael Clarke Duncan and Rosario Dawson back on set), as well as Clive Owen’s Dwight. Further stories will also be involved, one featuring Jessica Alba’s Nancy (rescued by Bruce Willis from the mildly jaundiced Nick Stahl in That Yellow Bastard in the first film), in an effort to provide a through-line for audiences. To be honest, the world of Sin City is so stylish, so evocative, that it may not matter a great deal if anyone returns from the first film. It seems likely that the sequel will “work” regardless.

Miler says that “Just Another Saturday Night” will also be included, which might bring back Mickey Rourke’s Marv. A welcome addition to the film, though Mickey Rourke seems non-committal to say the least, having been quoted a few years ago as saying:-

“No, I’m not interested in that right now. That’s not a reality right now. It’s pissing in the wind. There’s different factions going different directions there. I don’t know. That’s three hours of make up and I’m claustrophobic, so I’m going to have to work something out”

But a few years is a long time and he may change his mind if the script is right and Robert Rodriguez does indeed return to direct. Frank Miller’s exact words to MTV were:-

“Sin City number two is primarily an adaptation of the book ‘A Dame to Kill For’. It also features the short story, ‘Just Another Saturday Night’ and two new stories. One involving Jessica Alba‘s character, Nancy Callahan, that I came up with for the movie in order to tie things together and make it be more united with the first.”

So there you go. Rodriguez won’t commit until he’s seen the script and is sure it is up to snuff, so as ever, we’ll see.

Source: IndieWire and MTV.

That seems to me not to bode well, but who knows?

Maybe I’m being dazzled by high production values (the eternal quest of Super 8′s Charles), but what I’ve seen of Immortals so far has frankly impressed me and this latest clip continues that trend.

We see Henry Cavill’s Theseus approach a hooded King Hyperion and after a bit of muttering, it all looks set to kick off. Mickey Rourke seems to be having a whale of a time, chewing the scenery for all he’s worth and Cavill looks utterly at home on leading man duties, which bodes well for his even more heroic upcoming turn as Kal-El.

Enjoy the clip below, for which thanks be to Yahoo Movies.

Director Tarsem Singh’s upcoming film, Immortals, is getting closer and closer to its anticipated 11th November (11/11/11) release date, and it’s definitely a film I’m really looking forward to.

For one thing, I’m interested to see what Henry Cavill is like as a leading man ahead of his turn as Superman for Zack Snyder in the upcoming, and even more highly anticipated, Man of Steel.

But Immortals itself does look pretty fantastic, and all the things we’ve seen so far for it, from immense trailers to posters and everything in between, have been very encouraging.

We’ve now got ten great new images from the film to share with you, two courtesy of Collider and the other eight courtesy of the film’s own Facebook page via ComingSoon.net.

Alongside Cavill will star Luke Evans (The Three Musketeers), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), John Hurt (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy), Isabel Lucas (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), and Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2).

“In the film, the brutal and bloodthirsty King Hyperion (Rourke) and his murderous Heraklion army are rampaging acrossGreecein search of the long lost Bow of Epirus. With the invincible Bow, the king will be able to overthrow the Gods of Olympus and become the undisputed master of his world. With ruthless efficiency, Hyperion and his legions destroy everything in their wake, and it seems nothing will stop the evil king’s mission.

As village after village is obliterated, a stonemason named Theseus (Cavill) vows to avenge the death of his mother in one of Hyperion’s raids. When Theseus meets the Sybelline Oracle, Phaedra (Pinto), her disturbing visions of the young man’s future convince her that he is the key to stopping the destruction. With her help, Theseus assembles a small band of followers and embraces his destiny in a final desperate battle for the future of humanity.”

It’s just a few more weeks now until we’ll be able to see Immortals on the big screen, in 2D and/or 3D, and it’s definitely looking like something worth checking out. At the very least, it looks visually very impressive. For now, enjoy these ten new pictures, and as usual, click to enlarge.

Stylistically, it of course owes a debt to Snyder/Miller’s 300 (a debt it acknowledges in the trailer and this TV spot). Whether it will have more in common with that film, or less successful offerings like the Clash of the Titans remake remains to be seen. Until 11/11/11, you can enjoy the new TV spot by clicking on the link below, in which Mickey Rourke’s Hyperion vows to leave his mark on the world, Henry Cavill’s Theseus swears vengeance and lots of shiny arrows and tidal waves get their moment of glory too.

We got the first trailer for the film back in April, and it was pretty awesome. Most recently, we’ve had another fantastic new trailer, and plenty of excellent stuff in between.

Those nice folks over at MTV Movies have started a new weekly piece in the run-up to the film’s 11th November release this year, called “Immortals Mondays,” which is as it says on the tin, and this week, they’ve given us a great still of Henry Cavill in the lead role of Theseus to share with you.

If you’ve seen any of the trailers and TV spots for the film, you’ll probably have already had a good look at this still in them already. And if not, you should be excited by the awesomeness of the image. His bow and arrow looks brilliantly fantastical, and I can’t wait to see it properly in action next month.

Immortals has a great cast that Cavill is heading up, alongside Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans, the upcoming The Three Musketeers), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), John Hurt (Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy), and Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2). With just over a month to go until its release, we’ve not got long to see Cavill in action with this epically-named and legendary Bow of Epirus.

Hemsworth will team up with the original’s director/star (Con Air’s Simon West is welding the megaphone this time around) Sylvester Stallone, alongside Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews, Jet Li, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis and newcomers Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme.

This piece of casting is certainly a shrewd move by the makers. Hemsworth is on the cusp of major stardom owing to one of the starring roles in the upcoming, hugely anticipated adaptation of the hit young-adult science fiction novel, The Hunger Games, which is due for release in the UK next March.

No word yet if his role in The Expendables sequel will be that of Stallone’s grandson, which the 21-year-old could feasibly play.

While I’m sitting here waiting for the new Twilight trailer to drop, EW have just posted the news that Chuck Norris and Jean Claude van Damme have been confirmed for The Expendables 2 with Nicolas Cage on the wish-list. This news follows that of Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger are on board too.

In an interview with Sylvester Stallone who wrote, directed and starred in the original movie, he broke the news that Van Damme and Norris are confirmed and thinks that Cage will be appearing but it sounds like he wants to get a few more involved too including Michael Biehn and Michael Pare and maybe even John Travolta making it a nice Face Off reunion with Cage:

“We’ll have a big showdown between me and Van Damme, which has been anticipated for a long time, so it should be a good one”

“We’ve got Chuck Norris and I think Nic Cage. We’re trying to work out different scenarios. I like using people that had a moment and then maybe have fallen on some hard times and give them another shot. So we’re always looking for actors like Michael Biehn and Michael Pare. I like those kinds of guys. Someone did it for me and I like to see if I can do it for them. We also need some new blood in there, a Navy Seal-type, because with the Expendables none of them have 20-20 vision anymore. They need some help, man.”

I was desperate for Norris and Van Damme to appear to appear in the original 2009 movie but it looks like we had to wait a couple of years longer to see them. The addition of Cage could be cool and all I need to do now is work out how I can get on set! Now all we need is for Steven Seagal and Jackie Chan to sign on the dotted line and the line up is complete! Then again, we’ll need some more people for The Expendables 3 no doubt!

The movie is expected to be released August 2012 and shooting starts at the end of this month.

It looks as though pretty much everyone who survived the first film is set to return, with a bit of added Chuck Norris and JCVD, if persistent internet rumours are to be believed.

Obviously Arnie and Bruce Willis cameoed in the first film, to mixed effect. This time around, director Simon West (ConAir, The General’s Daughter) looks set to give them a little more to do. Frankly, that must be a good move. Arnie hasn’t taken part in a decent action sequence in years and years, whereas Brucie has shown in more recent offerings like RED and Die Hard 4.0 that he still has fantastic action chops, so lobbing them all into some well-choreographed mayhem should be plenty of fun.

Filming is due to kick off in October 2011 for a summer 2012 release, so this should all start coming together pretty soon. Of course calling someone’s role “substantial” is very much eye of the beholder stuff, so we’ll have to wait and see whether we’re talking glorified cameos, or something a little more meaningful. I’d pay good money to see Willis, Arnie and Sly standing side by side, massive guns and rocket launchers in hand, levelling a city block, or an acre of Latin American jungle, but I’ll have to wait like the rest of you.

There was a time when its entry on IMDb showed “In Production” for a 2010 release, which I think we can all now agree is unrealistic.

At Comic-Con in July, Rodriguez said that funding was in place and that shooting would begin once the cast and script were locked down. Miller has apparently sorted out the first draft of the script and no less impressive a writer than William Monahan, Oscar-winner for The Departed has now been drafted in to work on it further.

There is plenty of Sin City material to populate another film, whether utilising further stories for previous characters (like Mickey Rourke’s Marv), or bringing in hitherto unexplored strands. Hopefully this won’t be another false dawn and we can get back to Sin City some time soon. Monahan is said to be reuniting with Scorsese for a remake of 1974′s The Gambler and has also scripted Oblivion, a hot-hot-hot sci-fi project to which Tom Cruise is now attached, but he should be able to find ample time to have a bit of a tweak with Sin City.

Thanks to THR for the heads up on his one.

Members from the first film, Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis are being mentioned, alongside the kickboxing “Muscles from Brussels” Jean-Claude Van Damme and old-school favourite, Chuck Norris (now, shockingly, in his 71st year on this planet!!!) He makes the rest of the crew look like a bunch of young, ineffectual punks by comparison.

John Travolta’s name has also cropped up, although he hardly possesses the hard-man credentials of many of these actors. Maybe he’ll perform a dance routine as a means of distracting the enemy while his macho peers do the dirty work.

All this is completely up in the air at the moment of course, but with the film stated for release next August (under the direction of Con Air’s Simon West), expect a locked-down cast list to appear pretty soon.

I have written about Tarsem’s “Immortals” before several times, included my first write-up from the films panel at this years Wonder-Con in San Francisco. I have been eagerly awaiting the visionary’s next film since being introduced to “The Fall”, a masterpiece in my opinion. The footage at Wonder-Con was good but the panel was much better. Tarsem is an extremely energetic person both behind and in front of the camera. He’s a director that knows what he wants and goes and gets it. In fact, he has a style that I know a lot of people don’t really mesh well with. He actually makes his films with the visuals in mind firsts and trusts that a story will fall into place eventually. “The Fall” is the perfect example of visuals being the top priority.

At Saturdays panel, he talked about how he was very much looking forward to making a film in a much more controlled environment and seeing the result of that. “The Fall” took two years to film and spread out over 18 different countries. Also, the visuals effect shots in the fall can be counted on one hand. “Immortals” is quite a different movie. While similar in scope, there is no denying the film is chalk-full of visual effects shots and trades plane rides to locations for studio time. The few trailers we have seen have showed you brief glimpses at the world he has created and the action that would take place. While I love both so far, I felt like there was something missing. The film has yet to be rated so I was curios if we were going to see a film along the lines of “300”, as both films share a producer, or more child safe fare like “Clash of the Titans.” Saturday, we got our answers.

Besides being shown a beautiful extended trailer for the film, we were also treated to an exclusive fight sequence between gods and titans. In my earlier “Immortals” piece I assumed that Tarsem might be looking to widen his fan base by shooting for a PG-13 rating. I was wrong. The film is not shying away from that “R” rating at all. I liken the footage we saw to that fast/slow action that Zach Snyder is famous forr, but on a snort of crack. It’s faster but the camera is still. The gods move from victim to victim in almost bullet-time motion. The gods use every weapon at their disposal to dispatch limb after limb. Bodies are split, heads roll and blood is sent in all different directions. The blood is slightly more realistic then that of the Spartan warriors lead by King Leonidas. In the scene we see the titans let out of their prison while five gods descend from the heavens. Leading the way is Zeus (Luke Evans) with Poseidon (Kellan Lutz) and three other gods in tow. Lutz quipped during the panel that he watched “The Little Mermaid” to prepare for his role. However, you won’t see Ariel’s dad use his trident the way Tarsems’ god of the sea does. The gods move with am Achilles like grace and appear to be twice as fast as their titan counterparts.

I feel that “Immortals” looks better and better every time something new presents itself to me. I think I’m being overly optimistic about the film, but nothing up to this point has led me astray from the director and his vision of this film. 11-11-11 can’t come soon enough.

The movie stars Mickey Rourke, Kellan Lutz, Henry Cavill, John Hurt, Isabel Lucas, Luke Evans, Stephen Dorff and is directed by Tarsem Singh. It’s released in the UK 11th November which is my dad’s birthday. Make sure you say happy birthday to him!

An awesome new trailer for the upcoming film, Immortals, due out on 11th November this year, has gone up over at RyanSeacrest.com, and it has plenty of epic new footage to add to the first trailer we saw back in April.

Tarsem Singh will be returning as director five years on from his film, The Fall, and after largely financing that film himself, the $115m. budget for Immortals is a substantial increase, and so far, it looks like the money has been put to great use.

Immortals has got a great cast with a mix of rising stars and established talent, including Henry Cavill (The Tudors, the upcoming Man of Steel), Luke Evans (Clash of the Titans, and the upcoming The Three Musketeers and The Hobbit), Freida Pinto (Slumdog Millionaire), John Hurt (Alien, V For Vendetta), and Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler, Iron Man 2). And it will give us a chance to see what Cavill is like in a big-budget feature role as Immortals’ protagonist, ahead of his role as Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel. By the looks of things, he’s definitely an actor on the rise, and deservedly so.

The film will see Cavill’s character, Theseus, pitted against King Hyperion (Rourke), who is taking his legions and destroying all of Greece in search of the lost Bow of Epirus, with which Hyperion seeks to overthrow the gods. It is Theseus to whom the task falls, chosen by the gods, to save Greece and the world from such a fate. As Pinto’s oracle character says to Theseus in this new trailer,

“I cannot change the future. You can.”

In this new trailer, we get to see Isabel Lucas in action as Athena, goddess of warfare, wisdom, justice, and skill, and her slow-motion takedown of two enemies, with their comrades’ bodies strewn across the floor around her, looks pretty immense. Lucas could well be another star to keep an eye on, having had a small but sizeable role in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen two years ago, and also starring in the upcoming Red Dawn remake opposite Chris Hemsworth.

Evans is yet another great actor in this film who’s recently been gaining more attention, being cast last week as Bard the Bowman in both parts of The Hobbit (the first official images of which were released a few days ago), and he will be seen in October this year as one of the protagonists in what is set to be an epic take on the story of The Three Musketeers by director Paul W.S. Anderson (Resident Evil, Death Race). In Immortals, Evans will be playing the role of Zeus, king of the gods, and he looks pretty incredible casting himself down from the sky, and giving strength to Cavill’s Theseus in the trailer’s final scenes.

Without further ado, here is the new trailer:

First there is news that Russell Crowe may play Jor-El in Zack Snyder’s Superman: Man of Steel and now we see that Simon West (Con Air, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and The General’s Daughter) will direct The Expendables 2! The Expendables was a bringing together of both 80s and 90s ‘hard men’ to create a throw back to all the movies that we know and loved from the two decades. Sylvester Stallone wrote, directed and starred in the first movie and ever since, we’ve speculated on who might direct the second and now we know.

Deadline have broken the news and also tell us that Sylvester Stallone, Statham, Dolph Lundgren, Mickey Rourke, Terry Crews and Jet Li are all expected to be back for the second installment. Let’s hope that Steven Seagal and Jean Claude van Damme appear this time along with larger roles for Arnold Schwarzenegger (personal life allowing!) and Bruce Willis.

Good news or bad? Tell us in the comments section below!

Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, and Christopher Walken will all be joining Colin Farrell for the black comedy, Seven Psychopaths, Variety is reporting, making the leading cast more than impressive.

The film is to be written and directed by Martin McDonagh, who has already proven his creative talents working with Farrell on 2008’s In Bruges, which won McDonagh a BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay and Farrell a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy. Let’s hope that Seven Psychopaths will see a repeat performance of McDonagh’s success.

Adding three other big names to the list should certainly help. Rockwell has truly been a rising star recently, especially in the last few years, taking major roles in Frost/Nixon, Moon, Iron Man 2, and the upcoming Cowboys & Aliens, and he’s one of my favourite actors working at the moment, and a role in a black comedy is a perfect fit for him. Rourke starred alongside Rockwell in Iron Man 2, so there is already a chemistry there, and Rourke is one of those actors that always brings his best. The same can of course be said for Walken, who is still going strong in his career at 68 years of age with over 50 years in the business, and is just simply brilliant.

Farrell is one of the best (and sadly, relatively few) Irish actors at the moment who has found success on both sides of the Atlantic, starring in very successful U.S. films like Phone Booth and Daredevil, and also taking roles in smaller British and Irish films like London Boulevard and Ondine. He’s currently filming Fright Night and has taken the lead in the Total Recall remake, and if you caught the first trailer for Horrible Bosses, you’ll know we’ll be seeing him again soon this summer in that.

Seven Psychopaths,

“follows a screenwriter (Farrell) struggling for inspiration for his script, “Seven Psychopaths,” who gets drawn into the dog kidnapping schemes of his oddball friends (Rockwell and Walken). Things take a turn for the worse when a gangster’s (Rourke) mutt goes missing.”

When done well, a good play-within-a-play can be a brilliant idea (with similar examples ranging all the way from Shakespeare’s Hamlet to Spike Jonze’s Adaptation.), and be a lot of fun to illuminate parts of the whole within itself, should McDonagh chooses to take that direction with the film. Either way, adding Rockwell, Rourke, and Walken to the cast is excellent news in my books, and with the project to be sold at Cannes in the coming days, I’m hoping it will be another big success for everyone involved.
