The first trailer for Paul W.S. Anderson’s return to the world of Resident Evil with the fifth upcoming film in the franchise, Re5ident Evil: Retribution, landed earlier this month and it looked pretty impressive. Even if you’re not a fan of the franchise, you’d have to admit that the effects are rather awesome.

We’ve now got the first teaser poster to share with you, via Collider, as well as an updated version of a piece of artwork we saw from the film just over a week ago.

Retribution will see Milla Jovovich reprising her role as Alice, with a supporting cast that includes Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine, Johann Urb as Leon Kennedy, Boris Kodjoe as Luther West, Bingbing Li as Ada Wong, and a surprise return from Michelle Rodriguez as Rain Ocampo, who starred (and seemingly died) in the first film. I’m pretty interested to see how Rodriguez will return. (Not to mention very much interested to see how she’ll return in Fast Six, but that’s a different story altogether.)

Written and directed by Anderson, the film (styled in the title both as Resident Evil: Retribution and Re5ident Evil: Retribution) will be with us in 3D on 14^th September this year, so we’ve got eight and a half more months before it hits. The last piece of artwork was unlocked by the film’s Twitter page after fans tweeted about the film with the hash-tag #ResidentEvil, getting it to trend in the US, and judging by the #ResidentEvil on this new teaser poster, I’d say that we’re in for a marketing campaign fully involving fans. In as much as the beginning of the trailer was a huge product placement ad for Sony, I thought the actual footage of the film looked pretty damn sweet. Anderson’s said that we’re to expect epic things from this fifth film, and watching the teaser really makes you believe him.

Two brilliant new images of Jovovich have now surfaced, the first from the film’s Facebook page and the second from its Twitter. As is becoming increasingly common, the ad campaign for the film is encouraging fans to get involved, and the second image was released after fans got #ResidentEvil to trend on Twitter in the US.

Written and directed by Anderson, the film – also known as Re5ident Evil: Retribution – will star Jovovich as the beloved Alice heroine, with a supporting cast that includes Sienna Guillory as Jill Valentine, Johann Urb as Leon Kennedy, Boris Kodjoe as Luther West, Bingbing Li as Ada Wong, and a surprise return from Michelle Rodriguez as Rain Ocampo, who starred (and seemingly died) in the first film.

Resident Evil: Retribution is due out in the UK in 3D on 14^th September this year, and though I still need to play catch-up from the fourth film, Resident Evil: Afterlife, I’m already looking forward to this. More bullet spitting vengeance in a post apocalyptic Earth for us today with zombies aplenty and only Milla Jovovich standing in the way of the planet becoming an all you can eat  buffet for the undead.

Though the zombie craze has officially passed into the realms of parody thanks to Seth Grahame-Smith there’s still a twitch of life in the corpse of Resident Evil with the latest installment, Retribution, getting a new trailer today.

Jovovich returns to front the film with Paul W. S. Anderson back behind the camera. It’s in 3D so expect weapons flung and blood to flow in your general direction.

The Devil’s Eyes uploaded the trailer from AOTS and it’s not great quality, so if you need to see every drop of zombie slobber in HD then you would do well to wait for the official release which is expected sometime later today.

Vin Diesel has pretty much put rumours of a sixth and seventh Fast and the Furious film to rest this week by stepping out of the shadows to pretty much (two important words there) confirm them.

Speaking on the writing process of the much touted sixth film (a process that I’m sure is ably aided by a veritable surfeit of Hot Wheels miniatures and a lot of vroom vroom sound effects) he has stated:

With the success of this last one, and the inclusion of so many characters, and the broadening of scope, when we were sitting down to figure out what would fit into the real estate of number six, we didn’t have enough space. We have to pay off this story, we have to service all of these character relationships, and when we started mapping all that out it just went beyond 110 pages.

To this he added that the studio said “you can’t fit all that story in one damn movie!” which for my money is Universal braying for two films worth of box-office, what with their engine currently running on last year’s Fast Five dollars and all.

Director Justin Lin is confirmed for the sixth and everyone seems to be assuming that he and the cast will return for both new outings considering that most of them are pretty much box-office poison outside of the franchise (and by most of them I ironically mean the two leads stars Vin Diesel and Paul Walker). Even so that’s no bad thing because as long as you lobotomised yourself on the way in Fast Five was undoubtedly rollicking good fun.

It’s yet to be seen whether the two films will be stand-alone pieces or whether they will form one two-part contiguous story but either way I’m excited. Whilst they won’t be anything like The Hobbit or Harry Potter 7 they will definitely rival them as pieces of all out entertainment.

With all the publicity and everything we’ve been seeing lately for Paul W.S. Anderson’s The Three Musketeers, which you can catch up on here, it might be easy to forget that the writer-director and his wife, Milla Jovovich, are collaborating once again for the fifth instalment of the Resident Evil series, Resident Evil: Retribution.

I must admit that I’m still yet to see the fourth film (though I do own it, so it’s just a matter of time), but I like the first three films, and welcome the next in the series.

Whilst on the set of the film, Jovovich has tweeted away a new image and video, Shock Till You Drop report. The image, which Jovovich is calling, ‘What Happened To Alice?’, shows her sporting a few pretty painful looking cuts in her neck, and blood around the wound and on her face. And the video gives us a look at Johann Urb on the set as Leon Kennedy, who – if I’m not mistaken – is making his character debut in the film series, along with Boris Kodjoe who returns as Luther West.

Along with Jovovich, Urb, and Kodjoe, Retribution will also star Sienna Gullory as Jill Valentine, Shawn Roberts as Albert Wesker, Kevin Durand as Barry Burton, Li Bingbing as Ada Wong, and Michelle Rodriguez, who returns from her appearance in the first film as Rain Ocampo.

Filming is expected to continue pretty much right up until Christmas Day, so we may well be able to look forward to more set photos in the coming weeks. Retribution is set to hit cinemas on 14th September next year, and it sounds like it should be pretty interesting. Without further ado, here’s the new image followed by the video from the set.

I know what you’re thinking: this recent Avengers hullabaloo is all very well and good, but could you please tell me what’s going on with Resident Evil: Retribution?

Indeed we can. On top of a slew of recent casting updates which we will get to shortly, the fivequel(?) attracted attention in the last week for an accident that took place on set, injuring sixteen zombie extras. With maladies ranging from bruising to a broken leg, a total of 12 cast and crew members were taken to hospital in Toronto as a result of the incident, which took place during the shooting of a chase sequence.

As for the aforementioned casting details, franchise star Milla Jovovich has revealed on twitter that Chinese actress Li Bingbing has been cast in the role of Ada Wong. The role of Leon Kennedy, meanwhile, will be filled by actor Johann Urb.

Bingbing and Urb join Jovovich, Sienna Guillory, Michelle Rodriguez, Kevin Durand and  Boris Kodjoe on the film, which is scheduled for release next September.

Marine staff sergeant Nantz (Aaron Eckhart) is a highly decorated and experienced soldier but one who is struggling to come to terms with what is perceived to have been a tactical failure on his part leading to the deaths of those under his command during a recent tour of duty. Haunted by the deaths of his platoon and the damage to his once stellar reputation Nantz hands in his notice of retirement to his superior so once he’s trained a group of new recruits he will leave behind the only life he has known for many years. However, as is common is such circumstances Nantz is required to be involved in one last mission as a series of meteors are set to land off the coast of some of the world’s largest cities.

It soon transpires that these aren’t meteors; they are in fact alien invaders looking to colonise earth and wipe out its population. With cities across the world falling rapidly it’s made absolutely clear that Los Angeles can’t be lost (obviously). Nantz is assigned to a new platoon under a rookie Lieutenant and amongst a number of marines sceptical of him and his reputation for leaving men behind. The team are sent on a mission to retrieve a group of civilians from an area heavily occupied by alien forces and escape within 3 hours before the area is razed to the ground by the air force.

For all intents and purposes it’s a typical war movie, albeit one with extraterrestrial antagonists. The mixing of the genres is for the most part very effective; however it fails to reach the peak of either of the genres at its heart. Still, The pace of the film is pretty relentless once the action kicks in a few minutes into the film and there are times where I found myself wanting for some down time in between the barrage of action set pieces, however it could easily be argued that it’s an effective way of portraying the relentlessness of war.

The dialogue throughout is largely utter nonsense; typical chest thumping military speak with the odd sprinkling of strong cheese. It’s almost amusing seeing the likes of Aaron Eckhart struggling to deliver a host of nonsense lines whilst playing it completely straight. It’s not inconceivable that this is very much a film where the set up and effects were the primary focus and silly things such as performances and dialogue were way down on the list of priorities.

Given the controversy surrounding this and Skyline it’s impossible to avoid comparisons between the two and I have to say that Battle: Los Angeles is superior in pretty much every way. I liked the idea behind Skyline and how the aliens took control of the humans but beyond that I found little to enjoy. I’ll acknowledge the numerous flaws of Battle: Los Angeles but the end product makes for a much more enjoyable viewing experience than Skyline.

Battle: Los Angeles certainly isn’t a film for everyone which you get a good idea on based on the critical reaction to the film but if you, like me, were put off from seeing the film at the cinema based on said reviews I would encourage you to seek it out and form your own opinion. It’s not a masterpiece by any means but that’s not really what it’s aiming for; it’s a solid action movie that a few years ago would have been an ideal summer blockbuster release.

It’s big, loud and not particularly clever but if you’re willing to switch your brain off and take the film as it comes you should have a good time with it.

Extras

At first glance the Battle: Los Angeles Blu-Ray appears to offer a wealth of extras that really dig into the production but in reality the extras here are as shallow as the film itself. Only two of the extras go over ten minutes and only three are exclusives to the format. They offer little insight so should be avoided unless you were particularly blown away by the film.

Other format exclusives include Movie IQ which should be familiar to anyone who has viewed a Sony Blu-ray release in the past; basically it acts as an IMDB lite offering up to date information on cast and crew as well as trivia. One exclusive that is of particular interest is Command Control which is a nice twist on the usual directors commentary tracks by utilising a picture in picture track that shows off cast and crew interviews and early storyboards. This kind of thing is again commonplace on big Blu-Ray releases but when done well, as it is here, it’s worth highlighting.

PS3 owners are treated to a theme, Demo and trailer for the upcoming console exclusive Resistance 3, which is appropriate given the thematic similarities between the titles.

Where the Blu-Ray really comes into its own is with its picture and sound which really are excellent and near perfect. Despite the best efforts of the shaky cam deployed throughout the film the clarity of the picture transfer allows you to see exactly what’s going on with a great deal of clarity. There are times however where the picture is too clear for its own good as it highlights some of the shortcomings with the films special effects. However this is picking faults in what otherwise is demo quality stuff.

The sound is also of demo standard as the mix between the effects and dialogue is near perfect with neither becoming compromised. Utilising the 5.1 DTS-HD mix is an immersive experience with it seeming as though bullets and explosions are missing you by inches.

The quality of the Blu-Ray release more than justifies the price lift over DVD and if it was based purely on the picture and sound this would be 5 star stuff, however considering the relatively weak showing on the extras front on balance a 4 star rating is appropriate in this instance.

As soon as Avatar finished its super successful cinema run rumours emerged that the world hadn’t seen the end of the story, and that we were to expect a second chapter to Jake and Neytiri’s adventures in Pandora.

The Hollywood Reporter has now announced that director James Cameron is getting ready to film not one, but two sequels to his “biggest blockbuster of all time” masterpiece.

The two movies are scheduled to come out over the course of the next four years, the first in December 2014 and the second a year after that, and Lightstorm Entertainment (Cameron’s company) is now just starting to get into gear for the mammoth work that such a complex and motion capture technology advanced production will require.

Cameron is selling his old office building in Santa Monica (currently listed at $11.85 million), probably in an attempt to at least reduce the inevitable work-related stress by having his offices and studio consolidated into one location not far from his home, down the coast of Malibu.

It is likely that Wellington based WETA, the special effects company which looked after the visual effects in the Lord of the Rings saga as well as those in the first Avatar, will be employed again, although Cameron hasn’t confirmed as of yet whether live action scenes will take place in New Zealand as they were for the first Avatar.

While fans will have to wait quite a while, the buzz around the Avatar sequels production has already started and looks like it could rival that of Peter Jackson’s long awaited The Hobbit. More news to come soon…

Following the release of last year’s controversial Skyline – the Brothers Strause’s sophomore effort which may or may not have plagiarised Battle: Los Angeles, a film the brothers had previously worked on – Jonathan Liebesman’s latest film was left looking like the White Knight of alien invasion movies.

How fitting, then, that Battle: Los Angeles should star Aaron Eckhart – Gotham’s very own White Knight – as Staff Sergeant Nantz, a retiring marine left fighting almost as many demons as he is extraterrestrial invaders, having infamously lost his entire platoon in a previous engagement. Dragged back into battle by the film’s antagonistic mess of flashing biotechnology and flailing tentacles, Nantz has the opportunity to redeem himself in both his own eyes and those of his doubtful men.

While Battle: Los Angeles is exponentially better than Skyline (heck, AVP:R was exponentially better than Skyline), and arguably the best movie of Liebesman’s career, it is by no means a classic in its increasingly overcrowded genre. Once again casting gone-off seafood as its resident evil, and with Michelle Rodriquez reprising the role of Michelle Rodriguez, this is a far cry from the recent trend towards more adult territory – a tonal shift championed by such acclaimed efforts as District 9 and Monsters, two movies that also show their respective alien encounters from ground level and thus rob Battle: Los Angeles of its one claim to originality.

The biggest problem with Battle: Los Angeles, however, is how frustrating it all is. As Liebesman does his best to obscure all onscreen action with a frenetic handheld camera, expertly blurring the identikit soldiers and poorly rendered extraterrestrial cuttlefish until it’s impossible to tell who is exploding and who might be responsible, it becomes clear that the film is more concerned with ethnic diversity than it is with actual character development. Christopher Bertolini’s script, meanwhile – an uninspired slew of certificate-defying swear words and gratuitous grunting – is so laughably macho that it might have been written by Arnold Schwazenegger’s right bicep. Why do the aliens wait half the movie to deploy their air-force? Why, when their technology is so evidently superior to our own, are their weapons so ineffective? Why are they invading LA in the first place, a city devoid of any discernible tactical advantage?

As such, if you are looking for an intelligent slice of science fiction, look elsewhere. If, however, all you are after is a melee of machismo mayhem in which character and internal logic are about as important as what Rodriguez chooses to wear on the red carpet – and you’re willing to forgive some seriously clunky dialogue and rubbish special effects – Battle: Los Angeles is a thoroughly enjoyable event movie that expertly compensates for the fact that the majority of viewers wouldn’t know a pristine Los Angeles if it staged an invasion of its own. Nevertheless, as far as the prospective World Invasion franchise is concerned, it would be considerably more interesting to see how other directors might tackle an alien invasion than how other cities might have fared.

While Battle: Los Angeles certainly has its moments, with a few decent creature designs saving it from complete redundancy, it has very little to say that hasn’t been said countless times before. Championing war with slogans such as “marines don’t quit!”, this is propaganda at its most nauseating, a black and white depiction of war that smarts unintentionally of Starship Troopers. By film’s end you will either be airpunching with the film’s protagonists or wishing they’d just sit down and have breakfast so that you could go home and watch something a little more substantial.

In an interview with the Associated Press earlier today, Michelle Rodriguez said that she’d heard that the sequel to the biggest movie of all time (that would be James Cameron’s Avatar) with the working title, Avatar 2, would take place underwater and would be ‘extraordinary beautiful’. She went on to say that she had no idea if she’s be back to player her role as Trudy Chacon.

I guess with Pandora explored, it might make sense for a sequel to go underwater, unlocking more creatures from the deep but surely we’ve only scratched the surface of the planet? No doubt more speculation will come until we actually get to see it! Let’s just hope it’s better than Sanctum!

We are weeks away from enjoying this year’s alien invasion piece and the first two clips from Jonathan Liebesman’s Battle: Los Angeles have surfaced and they look pretty much as you’d expect them to.

Reaction to the sneak peeks we’ve seen so far has been genuinely positive and these new clips give us an idea of the close quarters fighting we’ll see alongside the epic sky battlers which have taken up so much trailer time. Certainly looks more like Black Hawk Down than Independence Day, and this is a good thing.

It’s customary in these times to have at least one enormous city chewing alien invasion movie a year, serving up demolition balls-out destruco-insania on an epic scale and this year we’re being served up Battle: Los Angeles. It’s the end of the world as we know it oh so well.

This new poster details one of the scene in the trailer which popped eyes recently and Jonathan Liebesman’s film looks to have the right visual flurries in place, all we need now is a story to match.

Aaron Eckhart and Michelle Rodriguez head up the film which is due out on the 11th of March.

If you’ve not seen the trailer, you should have a little watch here as it’s rather good and personally, I can’t wait to see the movie.

Sony have just sent us the brand new international trailer for their new movie, Battle: Los Angeles. The trailer is prety simialr to the one released a couple of weeks ago but there’s a little bit of new footage in there.

Battle: Los Angeles is directed by Jonathan Liebesman, stars Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan, Michael Pena and is released 11th March.

Synopsis: When unknown forces put the City of Angels under attack, it’s up to a Marine staff sergeant (Aaron Eckhart) and his new platoon to come to the rescue.  As the invasion hits the streets of L.A., the Marines become our first and last line of defense against a highly powerful enemy.

It’s always the way, I’m literally about to go to bed and a brand spanking awesome new trailer comes in (this time from Yahoo)! Today it’s the turn of Battle: Los Angeles which is directed by Jonathan Liebesman and stars Michelle Rodriguez, Aaron Eckhart, Bridget Moynahan, Lucas Till, Michael Peña, Ne-Yo.

Synopsis: For years, there have been documented cases of UFO sightings around the world — Buenos Aires, Seoul, France, Germany, China. But in 2011, what were once just sightings will become a terrifying reality when Earth is attacked by unknown forces. As people everywhere watch the world’s great cities fall, Los Angeles becomes the last stand for mankind in a battle no one expected. It’s up to a Marine staff sergeant and his new platoon to draw a line in the sand as they take on an enemy unlike any they’ve ever encountered before.

Battle: LA is released in the UK 11th March and from what we’ve seen here, I can’t wait!
