Wondering what’s going on with Terrence Malick’s latest projects? Well here’s some news from the latest interviews with Rooney Mara who tells Entertainment Weekly that Lawless won’t start filming until September, and Michael Sheen who discusses his small role in Malick’s untitled romance on the BBC’s Film Review show.

With the release of David Fincher’s The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo last week, Rooney Mara is starting to do pretty well for herself. Before her role as gothic detective Lisbeth Salander, we would have only recognised her from a small role in Fincher’s The Social Network and maybe from her lead in the recent remake of Nightmare On Elm Street. Whilst we can hopefully expect a sequel to Fincher’s ‘Dragon Tattoo’, which is the first in an adaptation of Stieg Larsson’s Millennium trilogy, Mara doesn’t seem to have much else on her schedule.

Whilst her role in Malick’s next film, Lawless, has been recently announced, with set pictures showing her with co-star Ryan Gosling and the rest of the cast, the film won’t actually start being filmed for another nine months.

When asked about the project, Mara tells Entertainment Weekly: “That’s something that I hope to do, but it’s unfortunately not until September.” But when asked directly if she will “definitely” be in the movie, the actress only commented that, “Yeah, I hope to.”

So there’s not a lot of facts being given about Lawless, and it seems Mara isn’t going to be the one to spill any details either. “I want to work with people who have a vision and who are uncompromising in the way that they make films, and Terry is one of those people. He’s incredible. He’s one of the nicest people I’ve ever come into contact with. But I’m not going to give away his secrets,” she says.

We will, however, be seeing something from Malick relatively soon, with his untitled drama/romance starring Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams looking likely to be released sometime this year.

Fortunately we can give you some more promising information about this one, as Michael Sheen, who was revealed long after filming to be playing a small part in the film, has been a little more open in discussing the project.

“My girlfriend [McAdams] was in a film that Terrence Malick did so I went to visit her on set, and apparently, if you’re an actor and you turn up on a Terrence Malick set, he asks you to be in his film. So I got to be Ben Affleck’s boss for a day,” he told Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo on their BBC Film Review show last week.

At least we know that something is in the works.

Entertainment One have just sent us four brand new images from the wedding scene (and one from the honeymoon) in the latest Twilight movie, Twilight Breaking Dawn: Part 1 which stars Kristen Stewart, Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson. The movie is out in the UK now and if you’re a Twihard and haven’t seen it, where the heck have you been?

In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson), plus those they love, must deal with the chain of consequences brought on by a marriage, honeymoon, and the tumultuous birth of a child… which brings an unforeseen and shocking development for Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).

I have to admit, I do rather like this new images all of which you can click to enlarge.

I’ll so no more but enjoy!

Debut feature-film writer-director Amit Gupta’s new anti-war drama, Resistance, starring Andrea Riseborough, Michael Sheen and German actor Tom Wlaschiha is about occupation and its effects.

We talk exclusively to Gupta (left, on the left of picture) about adapting the novel into a film, the back-story, casting and shooting experiences, and get an unique piece of advice on how to prepare to make a film, plus an insight into his new film, based on his acclaimed BBC Radio 4 play, Jadoo.

HeyUGuys: What was it about Owen Sheers’s novel that made you want to turn it into a film?

Amit Gupta: I think when I read it the first thing that really stayed with me was the atmosphere of it. I felt there was something about it that felt very filmic to me. It also felt very poetic and I feel poetry translates very well to cinema because it’s such a visual style of writing.

How did Owen (above, right) help you visualise his novel at the writing stage, as there is not a lot of dialogue in the film.

Well, we walked in the valley together; we’d been around that landscape. We put some detail into the script, but a lot of it was about the way the story unfolded. I think a lot of the visual stuff was conversations between myself and the production designer and the director of photography. The look I was after was based on a combination of things in the novel, little images, but also I came across some paintings that I found very influential by an American painter called Andrew Wyeth, who painted mid-West America in the 30s and 40s, and that felt really strangely relevant to what we were doing, in terms of the space and the shape and the kind of photography I wanted.

The back-story about the UK Auxiliary Units – the Resistance – on standby is fascinating. Can you elaborate on what these groups were expected to do and the lengths they were expected to go?

The people who were recruited were told their life expectancy was two weeks, so they knew it was serious in the event of a German invasion and going underground. They were very likely to lose their lives in trying to resist the German advance. It was a very sophisticated network of units in the country. It’s very interesting as it’s one of the stories about the war I didn’t know about until I was made aware of it. I am very interested in the Second World War; I did a History degree and did a lot of reading on it. But I didn’t know anything about it and I guess people don’t. A lot of the background reading I did was on the Resistance in Europe, just to get a sense of what it was like with the Germans going into France and the Balkans. That gave me a sense of what it would feel like and what lengths they went to. Occupation was a strange system of ‘normalising’, making the place feel as normal as possible. This is something I wanted to do with the film, which is why the style is quite restrained because I didn’t want it to feel over the top, like a war film. I wanted it to be an anti-war film if anything.

There are a lot of difficult choices the characters must make, and with the limited dialogue, we never really know if Sarah has feelings for Albrecht, or if they are out of survival.

There is a scene early on in the film where Albrecht (bottom, right, Tom Wlaschiha as Albrecht) does say they are not going to report in to their local command and will just wait for the war to be over – they don’t want to take the risk of going back to war and being killed in the last week before it’s over. I found that quite interesting, as I’ve always wondered what it’s like to be in a situation where, what if you’re the last man killed before the Armistice. It must be an awful feeling for the family. They choose not to go back and have gone AWOL, which is why, if they went back the Gestapo would arrest them and probably execute them. Sarah to Albrecht, whether or not he’s really in love with her, it’s more about what she represents; she represents a new start. I really feel that when people are in extreme circumstances, emotions are heightened; you don’t have to know someone that well to feel they are an answer to your problems. They become someone you can project the life and your desire you want onto them. I think that’s what Albrecht does with Sarah. I wanted there to be ambiguity there with Sarah, and whether she ever wants to go with him. I think the romantic choice is that she stays true to her husband. The practical choice is you perhaps do leave with Albrecht and start a new life. You are weighing up the chances of your husband being alive, or should you go and build a new life?

How did you find casting on this, especially getting Michael Sheen onboard?

I worked with Sam Jones, a casting director who I work with a lot, so she knows what my taste in actors is. We always knew we were going to cast German actors in the German roles. I never wanted to make a film where people spoke English with German accents. When we first looked at casting the role of Sarah, Andrea Riseborough (above, right) wasn’t available, and we initially spoke to someone else. Eventually Andrea was available and she read the script within a week. I met her at Terminal 5 at Heathrow Airport to talk to her about what I wanted to do with the film – she was on the way to the Toronto Film Festival – and a couple of days later she called saying she wanted to do it. It was scary but easy because I knew she’d be perfect for it. I also knew she’d been filming constantly for two years and probably, for her sanity, she should have gone home and got some rest. But she saw a great part there and I’m forever grateful that she chose to do the film because she was fantastic. Michael (above, left) committed to the film emotionally. He read the script and he made his timetable work. It comes down to some really good agents who, if they can make it work, they will. You don’t get the Andrea Riseboroughs and Michael Sheens in a film unless there is some commitment to younger filmmakers. This is why Britain continues to produce filmmakers who get to work in the States and elsewhere really – we have a film industry here that’s open enough to make these things possible.

What were some of the challenges in making the film – how intense what the shoot?

We shot the film in five weeks. Anyone in the business will tell a first-time feature director like myself the things that you shouldn’t do is work with animals, children or on a period film, and you probably shouldn’t shoot on film either. I had a number of these things on my first feature. At the same time, if you don’t have any expectation, you don’t know what you should and shouldn’t be doing – you just know you have to get the film done. That’s a real plus, I think, because you don’t have that fear. But it was very intense. We were working six-day weeks. The seventh day I would be rewriting quite a bit with Owen and meeting the actors and talking about the schedule ahead, as well as talking to my production team. But we stuck to our timetable and we didn’t go over very much because we knew how hard people were working. I didn’t want us to run over too much because you can’t keep people going at that pace if people are going to be working an hour, two hours over every night. The big tension release and cheer on the final day after shouting, “Cut” and someone else shouting, “That’s a wrap”, was that we managed to keep to our timetable and we had another day in the bag out of 30. It is demanding. It is tough, but I thing the best thing that happened to me before making the film was my wife and me having a baby. I think it’s a good idea before making a film! I don’t think anything’s as intense as having a small child around the house. For me, it put everything into perspective. I thought I’m never going to sleep less than the first six months of being a new parent, so if I know I’m going to get four or five hours sleep a night that’s better than what I was getting in the first year of my daughter being born. Maybe all young mums should go and make a film.

It’s completely different to Resistance, and this is what’s going to be quite fun. Jadoo means ‘magic’. It’s a family comedy set in the world of restaurants in an Asian area of Leicester. My family still have a vegetarian Indian restaurant there, and it’s about two rival chefs who happen to be brothers. We’ve the script in pretty good shape and I think we’re going to be shooting in the spring. The next stage will be closing the last bit of finance, casting – we don’t have any confirmed cast yet, as contracts are yet to be signed, but there is one person I really want in the film and I think she wants to do it. There is a part for a famous chef who I really like, so I guess you could read between the lines; famous Indian chef who would be an inspiration to this film. It is going to be a largely Asian cast, given where it’s set. My great influences for this film would be Eat Drink Man Woman (1994) and Big Night (1996). The aim is to make a fun, warm movie that will make people want to go and eat a curry straight after!

Finally, what do you want people to take away from Resistance – does it resonate with contemporary occupation situations?

I really hope so. This was something I was really conscious of. I remember my conversation with Michael Sheen, the day before we were shooting him, and we were talking about the character of Atkins. I said what was very important to me was the contemporary version of Atkins is the person who recruits the suicide bomber. To me, George in the film is the equivalent of a suicide bomber – he’s young and influenced by somebody. His world, emotionally, falls apart. A decision he makes in the film has major consequences. That to me felt like a very contemporary resonance, as does a German patrol unit going into a valley. You have British soldiers going into areas of Afghanistan, where the women have been left behind because the men have gone into the hills. They had to try and help these women survive, and at the same time, worry about whether there were snipers around. In this film, we’re so far along in the war that they are not expecting a great deal of trouble where they are. But it still applies, that feeling of somewhere where you don’t want to leave behind because do you really want to go back to war – soldiers, I think, get that. It was important we made a film with enough ambiguity that it makes people think what if Britain had been occupied? Sometimes for me, things are spelt out a little bit too much in films, and what European cinema does really effectively is allow things to breathe.

Resistance is in cinemas from 25 November. Read our review here.

The new UK alternate-reality WW2 drama Resistance stars Andrea Riseborough and Michael Sheen and it is the feature film directorial debut of Amit Gupta (see our interview with Amit here). The film is based on the critically acclaimed novel by Owen Sheers.

Sarah Lewis, a 26-year-old farmer’s wife, awakes one morning to find that her husband has disappeared along with all the men in the valley. Assuming they have joined the Resistance, the women of this tiny community pull together, taking on the running of the farms, and wait, desperate for news. A German patrol arrives in the valley, the purpose of its mission a mystery. When a severe winter forces the two groups into co-operation, Sarah begins an acquaintance with the patrol’s commanding officer, Albrecht. Cut off from the surrounding war, the lines between collaboration, duty, occupation and survival become blurred.

Resistance features a sensational lead performances from British rising star Andrea Riseborough (Brighton Rock, Made In Dagenham, W.E.), and Tom Wlaschia (Enemy At The Gates, Valkyrie, Brideshead Revisited), and co-stars Michael Sheen (Frost/Nixon, The Damned United).

But what debut feature-film writer-director Amit Gupta has created is an alternative 1940s ‘reality’, based on a fascinating novel by Owen Sheers, about what if the Nazis had succeeded with their invasion plans of Old Blighty. Resistance actually reignites our interest in the genre, as well as points to a fascinating real-life back-story.

It’s WWII and Britain is occupied. A group of women in a remote Welsh village wake up to discover all of their husbands have mysteriously vanished overnight, possibly to join the Resistance. Meanwhile, a German patrol led by commanding officer Albrecht (Tom Wlaschiha) arrives in the valley on a mysterious mission. The women are scared but defiant, and with the harsh winter closing in begin to form a dependency. One young wife, Sarah (Andrea Riseborough), catches Albrecht’s eye. Cut off from all other wartime events, the lines between collaboration, duty, occupation and survival become blurred, as the future looks unknown.

This strangely abstract ‘anti-wartime’ drama has its own quietly aching soul, powered by an all-consuming and unique back-story that up until now has never been portrayed on film. In fact, the ‘Auxiliary Units’, a government-funded network of WWII resistance cells whose grim tasks would have included supposedly shooting all Nazi collaborators, as well as disrupting any invaders arriving on these shores, have been shrouded in secrecy for the past 50 years and are only coming to light now. But those expecting to see an action-packed and explosive adaptation of the Sheers novel of the same name, like some sober Dad’s Army imitation, will be disappointed, as this is not the film to expose the clandestine happenings – it merely suggests the presence of such units at the start.

Gupta is more interested in those left behind, and the impact of occupation, which has an intriguing analogy to current war zones like Afghanistan. In this sense, Gupta’s women in the story are strong and curiously ambiguous in thought. There are long, lingering moments of just ‘being’ in some scenes, as though the female characters will remain silent to their graves as they wait out events and the impending winter. It creates a haunting and quite moving effect, and the balance of power interestingly swings between local knowledge and that of the occupiers. Riseborough plays Sarah as a complete enigma, brave yet struggling with her self resolve, and keeping you guessing at her every thought and move while creating a tantalising, underlying narrative tension alone.

Wlaschiha as Albrecht is the film’s catalyst, the smiling, handsome face of the enemy and the approachable negotiator who wants nothing more than to survive the war by hiding out in the village from both sides – more so from the SS. Wlaschiha is charismatic in a mitigating and rigid fashion, but his presence is necessary to break down the women’s barriers, and the actor gives a confident and memorable performance. Nevertheless, we are always left wondering at Albrecht’s true feelings and whether they are selfish and out of necessity for survival, rather than anything meaningful. In this sense, and with the deliberate pace of the film, Gupta creates an alluring character study of resilience under occupation of both the occupier and the occupied.

That said – and without clues from the research of Sheer’s novel, there is a little too much ambiguity at times, especially with the appearance and subsequent shock disappearance of Martin Sheen as Resistance fighter Tommy Atkins that is woefully undeveloped and unexplained. Understandably, to venture down this path would detract from the women’s story and would mean a completely different film altogether. But all we are given is Atkins’ pearls of wisdom and his blunt commands to the only Welsh man left in the village, a young sniper called George (Iwan Rheon) who takes on the typical film/TV resistance role. It is also not clear what the true mission of Albrecht and his men are, short of the obvious as previously explained, and a hidden treasure in a cave seems like another obscure sub-plot that merely confuses our impression of Albrecht’s true intent.

In fact, Gupta’s faithfully muted approach to Sheers’ literary atmosphere is both Resistance’s illusive strength and its hindrance. However, Gupta demonstrates that he is more than deft at such a provocative subject matter, and like his leads, is one appealing emerging talent to watch.

***½~ (3.5/5)

In case you’ve missed any of our coverage so far, you can catch up on all things Twilight-related right here, most recently including all our photos and interviews from the film’s UK premiere.

Though I’m personally still yet to see any of the first three Twilight films, the things we’ve been seeing for the beginning of the end have certainly been encouraging me to play a little catch-up, because it really does look like this is going to be good.

“In The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, Bella (Kristen Stewart) and Edward (Robert Pattinson), plus those they love, must deal with the chain of consequences brought on by a marriage, honeymoon, and the tumultuous birth of a child… which brings an unforeseen and shocking development for Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).”

Along with Stewart, Pattinson, and Lautner, the film will also star Nikki Reed, Peter Facinelli, Elizabeth Reaser, Ashley Greene, Jackson Rathbone, Billy Burke, Sarah Clarke, and the brilliant Michael Sheen, with Oscar-winning director Bill Condon (Kinsey, Dreamgirls) taking the helm for both parts of the final adaptation of Stephanie Meyer’s original novels.

If you’re reading this, there’s probably every chance that you know a lot more about Twilight than me, so you’re undoubtedly already well aware of what to expect in this first part of Breaking Dawn. So with that in mind, I’ll leave you with the new clip, entitled ‘Hurt My Family’, to enjoy.

hIf you’re off to your local cinema for a midnight screening tonight, then have a great night, and be sure to let us know what you think of the new film after you’ve seen it.

With any other film there would be a distinct danger of oversatuaration but this campaign has been running for a long, long time (and thanks to a thoroughly irritating release delay for us chumps in the UK will run a little longer) and there hasn’t been a misstep along the way.

Every franchise or series The Muppets have targeted they have nailed perfectly, and while it’s not an exaggeration to offer up the equation that Anything + Muppets=awesome it’s still a sight to behold.

Our excellent friends at Den of Geek had the exclusive look at these fine posters. I wonder what’s next…

As a Brit watching Woody Allen’s latest European muse, the first thing that springs to mind is Only Fools’ Nicholas Lyndhurst’s time-travelling sitcom Goodnight Sweetheart about an accidental time traveller who discovers a time portal, allowing him to travel between the London of the 1990s and the same area during the Second World War. Time travel captures the imagination and has fascinated audiences, from Back To The Future to Quantum Leap. For this reason alone, Allen’s new romantic comedy has an instant awe – and not just as a result of the setting being the upmarket parts and cultural haunts of gay Paris.

An American family travel to Paris on business, but the engaged couple of the party, Gil (Owen Wilson) and Inez (Rachel McAdams), find the culture and lifestyle starting to interfere with real life, and they are forced to confront the illusion that a life different from their own is better.

Midnight In Paris is by far one of the best Allen films out for a couple of years. The film-maker has dabbled in other major cities around the world, such as Barcelona and London, with little charm or lasting impression. What Allen taps into in this is the natural mystique of Paris. Hence the rest of the tale feels more magical.

The charming trademark neurosis of Allen’s characters is back in full force – his 2010 film, You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, was just too self-absorbed and self-commiserating to allow audiences to really care for the characters they were watching. In this, Wilson is an absolute delight in one of his best roles for years as troubled writer Gil, who pines for past creative eras because he longs for a creative eureka moment. His ‘episodes’ with literary, artistic and film-making historical legends is incredibly quaint and light-hearted, and stirs a nostalgic passion we all sometimes feel of a better life lived that is now past.

Wilson is particularly apt at playing the wide-eyed innocent in his films, characters full of flaws and self-depreciation, that when he shares the company of the likes of Ernest Hemingway (Corey Stoll), F. Scott Fitzgerald (Tom Hiddleston), Pablo Picasso (Marcial Di Fonzo Bo) and Gertrude Stein (Kathy Bates) in this, it’s the same wonderful thrill you get watching an overly appreciative kid in a candy store, brimming with newfound confidence. In addition, fans of these great minds will revel in their quotes and references. It’s a gloriously amusing cultural jaunt, and although a lot of the episodes are brief, the snapshot moment is all it takes to beguile you.

McAdams is fresh and energetic as Inez and as stunning as Marion Cotillard as Gil’s yesteryear love, Adriana. Again, the sumptuous set design is as intoxicating as the location, showing all involved off in the very best light, and implying that Allen is in love once again with his characters. Cotillard simply illuminates the screen like a silver-screen legend in her heyday, captivating both admirer Gil and the audience. Back in the present, Michael Sheen as know-it-all Paul, one half of a couple who befriend Gil and Inez, is absolutely hilarious and a sheer, conceited tonic to watch as he talks his way around the cultural city with all in tow. Even France’s First Lady, Carla Bruni, makes an appearance to add to the film’s radiance.

Midnight In Paris is like a soothing, retrospective project for Allen, his very own journey to recapturing creative inspiration and fantasy, as he rekindles his character love affair that made him such a satisfying film-maker a couple of decades ago, and brought out the very best performances in his cast – as it does here. Although it suffers from a sobering moment of moralistic self-righteousness about ‘living in the present’ to be more fulfilled, Midnight In Paris is an effervescent, witty and absorbing tale lost in time.

****~ (4/5)

Yahoo have released this 15 second clip from the trailer which is set to go live tomorrow night (Wednesday morning) at 1am GMT. We’ll obviously be staying awake to bring you the trailer when it hits but in the meantime, here’s a 15 second trailer for the trailer!

In the trailer, we get to see Bella (Kristen Stewart) realise that she is pregnant and Edward (Robert Pattinson) throwing in the line, ‘It’s crushing her from the inside out!’! I’m quite literally hooked!

If you’ve not already chosen your side then you’re leaving it a little late.

EOne have gone a little crazy today and posted two posters for the beginning of the end, as Part 1 invades cinemas on the 18th of November and while there’s probably not that many Twilighters who have yet to read the books some may still be wondering how things turn out. Shame then that the trailer appears to spoil some of the movie’s key moments.

Your favourites all return with Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner comprising the particularly sharp love triangle and this film sees Kill List’s MyAnna Buring joining in the fun.

Here are your posters, in true cut-out-and-keep style,
