We’re three and a half months away from the third instalment in the Men in Black series, and things couldn’t be looking better! The first trailer for Men In Black III landed towards the end of last year, and if you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend you rectify that, because it looks so good. Every bit as good as the first two films, with the addition of a decade’s progression in special effects.

We’ve now got an absolutely fantastic new image from the film, courtesy of IMDb, in which we see Will Smith riding what has to be one of the coolest and most futuristic vehicles I’ve ever seen. We can also see Josh Brolin in the background as the Young Agent K, which means that this ridiculously cool futuristic vehicle is presumably actually from the 1960s in the film, so I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in the present day!

Barry Sonnenfeld returns behind the camera once more, with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones of course reprising their roles and a host of new faces, including Brolin, Emma Thompson, Alice Eve, Bill Hader, Nicole Scherzinger, and Jemaine Clement as the main villain, who we got a good look at last month.

Men in Black III will be with us in 3D on 25^th May, which should be a fantastic way to end the spring and get the summer box office off to a good start. For now, here’s the excellent new image of Smith and Brolin. It surfaced last month in small scanned form, but now we’re getting it in brilliant hi-res, and it looks so cool. And as usual, you can click to enlarge. Just a few days ago, we got our first look at Jemaine Clement, the main villain in the upcoming sci-fi action comedy, Men in Black III, which revealed the nasty-looking alien we can look forward to seeing on the big screen this year. If the first trailer is anything to go by, it’s going to be so much fun.

The first film was released way back in 1997, and was followed five years later by the sequel in 2002. This time around, a decade has passed since the last film, but the excitement and anticipation for it hasn’t diminished whatsoever.

A new image for the film has now surfaced, courtesy of USA Today via Collider, showing Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith looking as awesome and as suited and booted as ever.

Along with Smith, Jones, Brolin, and Clement, the film has a fantastic cast that includes Emma Thompson, Alice Eve, Bill Hader, and Nicole Scherzinger, with Barry Sonnenfeld returning to direct. The first film took more than $500m. and the sequel took in more than $400m. Here’s to hoping that the third in the trilogy will outperform its predecessors and do even better business for the franchise.

We got a brilliant look at this year’s upcoming Men in Black III just under a month ago when the film’s first trailer hit, and it was every bit as awesome as you’d expect, taking us right back to the genius that we loved so much from the first two films.

One of the most unexpected things about the production is that the lead villain’s role is being played by Jemaine Clement, one half of the Flight of the Conchords duo. If you’ve seen the show, or listened to any of their stuff, you’ll know that he’s not really the first person you think of when you say ‘alien villain’. I can’t wait to see it happen though.

Clement was noticeably absent from the trailer, and we’ve now got our first look at him looking all evil as a bearded biker, courtesy of the New Zealand Herald, via The Playlist. The image in fact seems to reveal that whilst we thought Clement wasn’t in the trailer, we did actually get a look at him transformed by visual effects in it last month. If you go back and watch (I’ve embedded it for you below), I dare you to try and tell me that that isn’t him at the 0:18/0:19-mark; the beard is too damn similar. I think that’s the alien villain we can look forward to seeing on screen, and man, are those teeth and eyes are creepy! They really do know how to make their aliens look interesting.

The film is directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, who brought us the first two films, and of course sees the return of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in the leads. Josh Brolin will be playing the Young Agent K, with the rest of the cast including Emma Thompson, Alice Eve, Bill Hader, Nicole Scherzinger, and Rip Torn reprising his role as Zed.

Men in Black III will be hitting the big screen in 3D on 25^th May this year, and it looks like it’s going to be an awesome affair. Until then, enjoy this great first image of Clement without make-up/special effects, rockin’ the bearded look, and compare it with the alien in the trailer beneath it. As if by magic, Sony have released the first trailer for the third installment of Men in Black and I have to admit, I am very much looking forward to seeing it. Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones are both back and this time are joined by Josh Brolin, Emma Thompson, Rip Torn, Nicole Scherzinger and Bill Hader and is directed by Barry Sonnenfeld.

The last time we glimpsed the shenanigans on the set of the third Men in Black film we saw newcomer Emma Thompson donning the last suit she’ll ever wear, now we have a look at one of the main stars of the film – Josh Brolin as the younger incarnation of Tommy Lee Jones.

We know that the plot surrounds Will Smith’s Agent J going back in time to visit his counterpart Agent K (Brolin) for some very important reason, and Alice Eve’s Agent Oh, who is played in the present by Emma Thompson.

Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger are also joining in the fun and were hoping that Barry Sonnenfeld has managed to end up with a decent script this time – I’d like it to involve going back in time to prevent the second Men in Black film from being made. Which probably won’t happen.

Not content with shining the spotlight on his 12 year-old son in last year’s reworking of The Karate Kid, Will Smith now has a possible reboot in his sights for Jaden’s younger sibling.

Variety are reporting that the Men in Black star is toying with producing a remake of the musical Annie, with daughter Willow taking the lead as the spunky, (erm) ginger-haired orphan.

Details are sparse as yet, but it has been mentioned that Jay-Z, who collaborated with Willow on her pop song Whip My Hair, may have a hand in the music. You may recall that the rapper actually sampled a song from the original musical (It’s the Hard Knock Life) on his 1998 single Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem). Look’s like everything has finally come full circle for him.

Sony are onboard and given that the Karate Kid made more than $350 million worldwide, they must have high hopes here.

Wish I was one of Smith’s kids. Imagine Christmas morning – instead of unwrapping your presents to find you’d received a film on DVD, there would be an actual feature there for you!

A third Men in Black film was not as inevitable as it would seem with the energy and dry wit of the springy first film giving way to a diluted, misshapen misfire of a sequel. Eight year later however Messrs. Smith and Jones are reuniting with a few new faces for a third trip around the galaxy.

Josh Brolin, Emma Thompson, Alec Baldwin and Betty White jump on board the MIB3 wagon for the next installment of the series which comes complete with a time twisting plot. Set pictures have surfaced from Splash (via ComingSoon) which can be seen below and you can follow the links for more pics.

The 3D picture has a release date of May 25th, 2012.

In other, MIB3 related news, The L.A. Times have an interesting article on the recruiting of Catch Me If You Can screenwriter Jeff Nathanson to kick the script into shape. The Times claim that Nathanson will take Etan Cohen’s draft and concentrate his efforts on the section of the script where the young K (played by Josh Brolin) is visited by Will Smith’s J. On set rewrites are a matter of course for many big budget productions and the report also mentions that the whole shebang will be shut down over Christmas and restart in the new year with the present day scenes being filmed in 2010 and the 1969 scenes will shoot next year.

In an attempt to develop a new story line for the upcoming Men in Black sequel, Will Smith and executive producer G. Mac Brown were spotted on a “fact finding mission,” according to Space Coast Film Commissioner Bonnie King.

The intel, which comes from tcpalm, does not confirm that shooting will be there but rather says there is a chance that MIB 3-D will be the next film to shoot over at Kennedy Space Center.  Right now Transformers 3 is finishing up its shooting in Brevard County before it heads on over to DC.

It has been eight years since MIB 2 hit theaters and it won’t be for another two years that we will get to see its follow up in 3D.  The tentative release date for the alien ass kicking duo is May 25, 2012.

Some new details for the not-entirely-necessary third film in the Men In Black series have surfaced online, and if you’ve been following the charge to screen for this new chapter you’ll know the original stars Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith are back, with Josh Brolin up for a role along with Conchords man Jemaine Clement.

The esteemed JoBlo have spilled all kinds of beans and the choicest cuts include the main plot revolving around time travel in which Messrs Smith and Jones return to 1969 where they join the young Agent Kay (this is Josh Brolin, playing a mid twenties version of Tommy Lee Jones. as JoBlo point out -Brolin is 42 which seems odd) in defeating the evil Jemaine Clement shaped villain Yaz.

Callbacks to the previous films include more celebrities outed as aliens, popular culture spoofs (the time travel device involves an iPhone app), and reading these new reports (and for more details with spoilers ahoy check out Brendon Connelly’s Bleeding Cool post) I’m not getting too excited about this one. With Etan Cohen’s script seemingly not deviating too far from the last two outings I have to hope that the new blood of Brolin and Clement give this one a shot in the arm.

A few weeks ago, it was announced that the third installment of Men in Black was to be in 3d. Since everything seems to be going that way, I guess it was no surprise. Josh Brolin is already cast along along with Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith with director Barry Sonnenfeld also back for the third movie. We’ve got a bit more news from the movie today from Deadline who have given us information on who the nemesis of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith will be.

According to the site, Jemaine Clement willl play Yaz:

Flight of the Conchords stars Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie declined to return for a 3rd season of the HBO series, but they have been touring around the world and selling out most venues. Which bodes well for Jermaine now that he’s tuning up to play the villainous Yaz in Men in Black III, the sequel that is being fast-tracked by Columbia Pictures. Will Smith stars with Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin, and Barry Sonnenfeld directs. Clement will next be seen co-starring with Steve Carell in Dinner For Schmucks, the Jay Roach-directed DreamWorks comedy that Paramount distributes July 23. Both films are produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, who saw what work Clement was doing on Schmucks and lobbied for him to join MIB3.

As they say, Men in Black 3 is being fast-tracked so expect more details like this one to start emerging in the coming weeks.

A couple of stories started bouncing about today. The first came from an MTV interview with Martin Lawrence, and concerned a movie that might be happening, Bad Boys 3. Martin Lawrence has been shilling the idea of another Bad Boys film for a long time now, and it is easy to see why. Whilst co-star Will Smith and director Michael Bay have gone on to much bigger and better things, Lawrence has struggled to find another winning formula. With shoddy comedies  like Big Momma’s House and Wild Hogs on his CV, he is desperate for a big hit to re-establish his name. The project sounds like it is starting to become a ‘real’ possibility, but not yet ‘really real’. You can find the interview here.

The other story, courtesy of Roger Friedman’s Showbiz 411, concerned another threequel which sounds like it really is going to go ahead. The first two Men in Black movies made a lot of money, and a genuine star of Smith. Family comedies with a compelling concept behind them, the Men in Black pictures combined sci-fi, humour with reasonably entertaining storylines, and the first at least will long be remembered as a fun movie. According to Barry Sonnenfeld, Will Smith is apparently signed up for Men in Black 3, which will be in 3D no less. Tommy Lee Jones is also apparently in, though not officially signed, and it hasn’t been fully confirmed if Tommy will be buddying up with Smith again, or if they will be trying something different. Two threequels, two attempts to cash in on a fondly remembered property, and the common link is superstar Will Smith. I don’t generally have a problem with sequels, possibly stemming from a childhood where i was desperate to see follow-ups to my favourite films. My problem is with Will Smith’s involvement. Don’t get me wrong, i don’t dislike Smith, i think he is a good worker with great on-screen presence and charisma. My problem with Smith’s involvement is that he doesn’t, or at least shouldn’t need to do either of these projects. From my reckoning, Will Smith is the last remaining star capable of guaranteeing a film box office success. So why waste this power on throwaway sequels and tired rehashes?

There have been numerous stories over the last year or so concerning Smith, and various ideas and concepts that have failed to make it in to pre-production. Some of these ideas have been really interesting, and involved big directors like Steven Spielberg. Why so many have collapsed is difficult to say, but the result has been Smith’s continued absence from the big screen. I mean seriously, he hasn’t had a movie in theatres for a year and a half! Possibly it is a case of timing, as that gap coincides with the global recession. It may be that studios were unwilling to take the risk on the various projects he has been involved with. If this is the case, it is just unfortunate, and i hope he hasn’t agreed to Men in Black 3 merely because he has given up on getting an original idea off the ground.

If, in the current financial climate, anyone has the ability and clout to get an original idea developed into a movie, it is someone with the reputation and box office record of Big Willie. This presents him with an awesome responsibility, he really should be using this to help some great new projects through instead of going back to the well. Smith has made a career out of mixing huge, blockbuster sci-fi movies with smaller, personal dramas. This kind of ‘one for the studio, one for me’ approach has served him well, and he is clearly pretty shrewd.

 I may be being unfair. It could very well be that in the interim between his last movie and now, he has felt his influence beginning to wane. It could well be that he feels frustrated by his difficulties getting original projects off the ground, and that by building his profile back up with a couple of pictures that are guaranteed of success, he will once again be allowed the leeway to get a major personal project on the slate. If so, then i guess there are worse choices than a 3D Men in Black. Bad Boys 3 being a case in point.

 Whatever the reason for the revival of these projects, i wish Will Smith luck in whatever he chooses to do. I’m not a huge Smith fan, but he is good at what he does, and he works hard at improving his range. Two years is too long for such a huge star to be away from the big screen, so whatever he IS going to do, i hope it’s set in motion quickly.

The final piece of the Men In Black puzzle has fallen in place and it is with a determination to ignore the lethargic sequel that we welcome the news that Agents Kay and Jay are returning to our screens in the third Men in Black film.

We knew that Will Smith had signed on to Sony’s series about a secret government department to deal with all types of extra terrestrial shenanigans and now Showbiz 411‘s Roger Friedman spoke to the Men in Black behind the camera, director Barry Sonnenfeld, who confirmed that Tommy Lee Jones has signed on as well.

Earlier reports indicated that Josh Brolin was set to play a part in the third film, set for a May 2011 release, potentially as a replacement for Tommy Lee Jones if he didn’t sign on. And with Sacha Baron Cohen and Jemaine Clement the other names thrown into the ring this could be a fun revisiting for the team.

Oh, and if the title didn’t give it away, Sonnenfeld also confirmed it’ll be shot in 3D, because that’s what all the cool kids are doing now. Though after the second film I’m naturally dubious about another movie there was certainly enough in the MIB world, and especially in the great interplay between Messrs Smith and Jones, to make this one worth looking out for.

I hope you’ll join me in glossing over the awful sequel to the 1997 Men In Black film and come to news of a Men In Black 3 with a fresh sense of optimism.

Barry Sonnenfeld’s late ninties cosmic caper blended perfectly the newly minted CGI whirligig with the comic book sensibilities of the source, and while the Hollywood sheen blunted a few edges the engaging duo of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith made for an enjoyable ride.

(This is the part where we gloss over the sequel.)

So now here we are with rumours on casting, following previous reports of Josh Brolin a likely candidate for a young Tommy Lee Jones in the movie and Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen being tipped to write the third installment, Bloody Disgusting have two more names for this forthcoming film.

While I thought Borat and Bruno were fine as attempts at a one man demolition crew, I enjoyed his turn in Sweeney Todd far more, giving Sacha Baron Cohen a character not of his own creating allowed him to step back a little and check him ego in check and emerge as a fine character actor. So the news that he’s talking to the producers about a role is a good thing – let’s have him as the bad guy, ok?

Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement is also rumoured to be in talks to star, perhaps as a MIB himself, whatever happens with these choices, and whoever signs on the dotted line the fact that Sony are looking at these two is probably a good sign for the third film.

Our favourite Goonie appears to be up for a role in the next Men In Black film. The L.A. Times is  running a story that Josh Brolin is being considered for a starring role in Men In Black 3, a film that will hopefully improve on the second installment.

Following his stellar turns in Milk and No Country for Old Men Brolin is carving out a very interesting career in Hollywood, able to take on a variety of roles and make each character memorable and unique.

Quite why he’s orbiting a threequel of a series that failed to make good on the promise of the first film is a little curious. Joining Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith in the last suit he’ll ever wear is an odd choice but he’ll no doubt be a fascinating addition to the team.

Read the L.A. Times article here, the project has yet to be signed off but I’m sure Sony are hoping that another A-list star attached will make that process all the easier.

So it would seem that the Men in Black franchise is alive and kicking with Variety reporting that Columbia Pictures have brought Ethan Cohen (Tropic Thunder) to pen Men in Black 3.

No word yet as to whether Tommy Lee Jones or Will Smith will be cast but lets face it, we couldn’t have a third installment without them both could we?
