We got our first look at Matthew Goode in the upcoming Burning Man back in July ahead of its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this month.

The pictures didn’t give much away about the film, but its first trailer has now arrived, via FirstShowing.net, and it gives us a much deeper look at the film without giving away too much, just a sense of how brilliant it’s going to be.

The film is written and directed by Jonathan Teplitzky, who is also attached to direct Colin Firth in The Railway Man, and along with Goode (Watchmen), it also stars Bojana Novakovic (Drag Me To Hell), Essie Davis (The Matrix Reloaded), Rachel Griffiths (TV’s Brothers & Sisters), and Kerry Fox (Bright Star). In it, Goode stars,

“as a man struggling to deal with personal tragedy and reacting wildly and recklessly to six women trying to save his life as he attempts to reconnect with his 8-year old son.”

Beginning, literally, with a crash, the trailer then moves into showing the film’s lighter side, of love and happiness, before moving into its darker tones of loss, and Goode’s seeming loss of control. But then comes another change, and we see Goode trying to set his life straight, with these words spliced between the scenes:

“The moments that change our life show us how to live it.”

And couple that inspirational sentence with the music, taken from (if I’m not mistaken) Kick-Ass’s absolutely fantastic score, and you’ve got yourself one hell of an end to a trailer. Admittedly, when you set that music to pretty much any visuals, you’ll make them seem epic. But Burning Man does look like a terrific film, and it’s something I’m really looking forward to seeing.

No word yet on when this will be coming to the UK, but keep your fingers crossed that it will be landing soon. Without further ado, here’s the brilliant first trailer for the film. The Kick-Ass music kicks in at 1:47, and things get even more awesome. Enjoy.

American director, Neil LaBute, has cast four of the lead roles for the upcoming film adaptation of Agatha Christie’s Crooked House with some of the finest English and Irish actors, Variety reports.

Now signing on to the project are Dame Julie Andrews, Gemma Arterton, Gabriel Byrne, and Matthew Goode, a great mix of classic talent and upcoming stars.

The film is set in 1947 in London. The lead character, Charles Hayward (most likely to be played by Goode) is told by his fiancé, Sophia (most likely Arterton), that the two cannot be wed until the murderer of her grandfather is found. As such, Hayward makes it his business to discover Sophia’s grandfather’s murderer.

Andrews is perhaps most likely to play the role of Sophia’s great-aunt, with Byrne either playing Sophia’s father or uncle. As is natural in Christie’s novels, everyone has a motive, and it is up to Hayward to find the killer before any more lives are taken.

The book has been adapted by the writer of the incredibly popular ITV series, Downton Abbey, Julian Fellowes, and Tim Rose Price. The budget is set at about $20 million, and shooting is set to start this summer here in the UK. With such a stellar cast now attached to the project, there’s even more reason to expect it to be a success, with so much talent in the cast and crew alike.

LaBute has currently been working in London as director of the play, In a Forest, Dark and Deep, starring Matthew Fox (Lost) and Olivia Williams (An Education), which started in March and will run through until the start of June. Hopefully being in London for the past two months has given him a chance to already start thinking in detail about how he’s going to bring the script to life.

The I Am Number Four star with not one, but two high-profile projects in the works.

First up is the lead in Steven Soderbergh’s (thought he was retiring?) comedy drama about a young, struggling actor who moonlights as a stripper to make ends meet, whilst he pursues his career (based on the real-life exploits of co-star Channing Tatum no less!).

He’s also being lined-up to appear alongside Matthew Goode (Watchmen) in action adventure Overdrive, where the two will play brothers who specialise in thieving cars, and embark on a mission which takes them to the South of France. With scripting duties by Michael Brandt and Derek Haas (Wanted, 3-10 to Yuma), the film will be produced by Taken helmer, Pierre Morel

In light of that now infamous interview with VMAN (where amongst other industry disses and tawdry personal details, he remarks that Hollywood is a “shit-hole”), Pettyfer seems impervious to the effects of self-induced career suicide, which would suggest that in the land of showbiz you can’t keep a good ego down, regardless to how grotesque it presents itself.

There had already been rumours that Patrick Wilson, who was The Nite Owl in Watchmen, might be in the running and so there is a danger here that anyone who has been in a Zack Snyder film and/or tried on a tights-oriented costume will be hailed as the next top candidate.

Having said that, Goode is reported to have enjoyed working with Snyder previously and although he is a little slight of build, a few factors work in his favour. Firstly, Christopher Reeve was pretty slight when he first auditioned as Superman, but with David Prowse’s help he bulked up fine and dandy. Secondly, Snyder is rumoured to be looking into CGI-augmentation for Superman and is therefore principally considering Clark Kent’s appearance when looking at Goode. Thirdly, Goode had to wrestle with effectively portraying the duality of his character in Watchmen and that puts him in good stead for Kal-El/Clark Kent/Superman.

Snyder is reported to be keen on Goode, who at 6’2” and 32 years old is at least the ideal height and age, two things much trickier to fix than his build or accent (he hails from the English west country). Let’s just say that at this stage in the casting process, you shouldn’t bet the (Kent) farm on him just yet.

What do you think? Who do you think would look great with red pants outside blue tights? Comment below as always.

That’s exactly what happened with Leap Year, the Amy Adams/Mathew Goode film which Optimum Releasing are putting out on DVD, and you could be one of three lucky winners to get your hands on a copy of the DVD.

Here’s a tidy synopsis to entice,

Amy Adams (Enchanted, Julie and Julia) is Anna Brady in the charming romantic comedy Leap Year. According to Irish tradition, a woman can propose to a man on Leap Day and that is exactly what Anna plans to do in Dublin! However, once she sets off for Ireland, Anna discovers her trip is going to be anything but simple!

Anna’s journey to propose to her boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) becomes a race against time and, determined not to miss Leap Day, Anna enlists the help of surly, Irish innkeeper, Declan (Matthew Goode) to taxi her across the country to Dublin. Hilarious events unfold as the pair find themselves facing a variety of obstacles! Tensions arise, however, when Anna begins to question her feelings for Jeremy when she realises she has made an unlikely connection with Declan.

Will Anna propose in time and more importantly, who will she choose?

Gary reviewed the film here, and all you have to do is answer the following question using the form below.

In which recent film did Matthew Goode star opposite Colin Firth?

One in an introduction to the movie itself, the second is an interview with the cast and the third looks at the 70s era, clothes, hair etc to make the film as authentic as possible.

Jon has reviewed Cemetery Junction which you can see here.

Gervais and Merchant both star in the film (although not for too long) but both have their directing hats on for it. Cemetery Junction also stars Ralph Fiennes (The Reader, Schindler’s List), Emily Watson (Synecdoche, New York, Breaking the Waves) and MATTHEW GOODE (Watchmen, Brideshead Revisited) feature alongside stars-of-the-future Christian Cooke, Felicity Jones, Tom Hughes and Jack Doolan.

Synopsis: In 1970s England, three blue-collar friends spend their days joking, drinking, fighting and chasing girls.

Freddie (Christian Cooke) wants to leave their working-class world but cool, charismatic Bruce (Tom Hughes) and lovable loser Snork (Jack Doolan) are happy with life the way it is.

When Freddie gets a new job as a door-to-door salesman and bumps into his old school sweetheart Julie (Felicity Jones), the gang are forced to make choices that will change their lives forever.

In many ways it is a love letter to the past, and its 1970s setting is bathed in a rose tint which belies the timeless themes of becoming greater than the accident of your birth, and escaping the social traps which lie in wait. With three virtual unknowns leading an accomplished British cast Gervais and Merchant took a chance with this film, and its success renders Cemetery Junction a fine addition to an already exceptional year for British film.

Centering on three childhood friends on the brink of adulthood, seemingly stuck in their dead end town, the film charts the turning point in the lives of factory worker Bruce, hopeless romantic Snork and the aspirational Freddie who begins the film on his first day as a life insurance salesman. Set firmly within the narrow confines of suburban life Cemetery Junction is a coming of age tale told with a truly British identity, put in place not just by the location but with a lackadaisical class bound struggle with the future; the humour (there’s a Noddy joke which is nicely crass and acerbic) and the snobbery are not only indicative of the period, they are essential to our understanding of the world.

Gervais and Merchant are masters of the social undertows which keep people trapped and each of the characters begin the film in their own particular paths, and while Freddie has the desire to make the class jump it is a superficial road to another, more comfortable, prison.

Cemetery Junction is a state of mind as well as the setting of the scene, and the drama may not be a narrative revolution it is written with enough charm and genuine hilarity to elevate it from the pedestrian, and you will reap the rewards as long as you don’t expect a movie version of The Office. It has an episodic nature which the strong performances and engaging threads of narrative do well to bind together but there is a beating heart to this film and it lies in the hands of the three central performances.

Speaking about the three male leads with Stephen Merchant he told me a story about how he and Ricky were waiting for the three to come in and audition and looked out of the window to see the three of them walking down the street laughing and joking around and this pretty much sealed the deal for them. Only later did he and Gervais find out that it was a planned performance, but the three convinced them, and they do an amazing job of bringing these childhood friends to life on screen.

While the emotional journey is one shared between the three we begin and end with Christian Cooke’s Freddie, whose desire to escape the slow ascent to a middle class is trapped in a narrow minded malaise, and he does a great job when sharing the screen with the suitably odious Mike Ramsay, played to oily perfection by Matthew Goode, and the parochial Insurance kingpin (and Freddie’s boss) Kendrick, another fine turn by Ralph Fiennes. He and Tom Hughes as the cynical and effortlessly cool factory boy Bruce are destined for big things, and thank goodness Gervais and Merchant were able to avoid the cloying nostalgia and offer up some tangible emotional trajectory for these two.

Several scenes stand out fresh in my mind, notably the retirement party where Freddie reluctantly allows Bruce and Snork gatecrash and which finishes with a rousing rendition of Cum On Feel The Noize, and is a study in the petty social disasters which seem to plague our lives, and the team of Gervais and Merchant are to be applauded for knowing when to stand back and allow their actors to do the work for them; in just a few reaction shots Emily Watson’s understated despair is palpable. This is partly where the succeeds and there’s an assured maturity in the narrative and the direction which results in a wonderfully funny and touching story, one which will resonate long after the credits roll.

There’s only one problem: I can understand why Ricky Gervais needed to be in the film, not least the marketing factor, but also because it’s his movie and he can do exactly as he pleases but I found his presence dented the film’s cogency, as the kitchen sink elements of the Taylor household were punctuated with Gervais playing himself and being such a huge star the film didn’t need that spotlight shone on it.

Despite this I found my stop at Cemetery Junction an immensely enjoyable one. Gervais and Merchant have done a good job of evoking the Billy Liar vibe while sticking adding their own brand of social awkwardness and the pay off, which is no surprise when it comes, is earned and this is thanks to the tremendous work by the actors and a genuinely funny script.

Cemetery Junction is out in UK cinemas tomorrow.

The film tells the story of Boston girl Anna Brady (Amy Adams) who’s waited very patiently for her long time boyfriend Jeremy (Adam Scott) to propose to her. On the eve of his departure for a medical convention in Dublin, Jeremy leaves Anna with a pair of diamond earrings when she expected an engagement ring. With her disappointment set in Anna decides she’s going to Dublin to propose to her boyfriend on February 29th. This act being tradition in Anna’s family as she is told by her grandfather Jack Brady (the criminally underused John Lithgow) it’s how her grandmother proposed to him.

Off goes Anna to Dublin to propose but due to bad weather has to stop off at Cardiff, Wales and has to commandeer a boat to take her to Ireland where she arrives in a small town and has two days to arrive in Dublin so she can propose, who would take this pretentious Louis Vuitton luggage carrying out of towner? Step forward Declan (Matthew Goode) a stereotypical Irish Bar owner who only due to having serious money problems to keep his bar running takes on the duty to escort Anna to Dublin for a fee.

So off the two go through the wonderful setting of the Irish countryside, that takes the staring role of the film, on a road journey of convenience that blossoms into a predictable unlikely blossoming romance. Just explained the movie in 25 words! And that again is the problem of another generic Rom-Com, it’s just to predictable and with almost every

avenue leading to an inevitable conclusion that just bored me throughout, some people will like it and fair enough as Amy Adams and Matthew Goode were good together on screen and some viewers will quite happily let the film playout with its inoffensive story and charming wit but I personally cannot bare to watch anything like that again.

There were a few reasonably funny scenes like when they are stuck at a cottage in the middle of nowhere with the owners and another couple and have to pretend to be a married which eventually fuels their romance to begin but that was about all that raised a smile throughout the film which was a shame but not unexpected. My wife who came along also hated it and she is fond of a Rom-Com or two so I gauge her reaction as a valuable guide to what to expect.

Overall, won’t revolutionise the genre but has a reasonable performance from Amy Adams and Matthew Goode and the scene stealing wonderful Irish countryside that will help soften the blow of its dire story and obvious conclusion. Go see if your incredibly bored or need a mindless film to go see on a date with a girl with a short attention span, but be careful she might get ideas for the next leap year in 2012 when the world apparently ends.

It would have been great marketing if there was a leap year this year but there isn’t, so it’s out on 26th instead.

The cast includes Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Matthew Goode, Ginnifer Goodwin, Nicholas Hoult, Ryan Simpkins and Paulette Lamori.

Synopsis: Set in Los Angeles in 1962, at the height of the Cuban missile crisis, ‘A SINGLE MAN’ is the story of George Falconer, a 52-year-old British college professor (COLIN FIRTH) who is struggling to find meaning to his life after the death of his long time partner, Jim (MATTHEW GOODE). George dwells on the past and cannot see his future as we follow him through a single day, where a series of events and encounters, ultimately leads him to decide if there is a meaning to life after Jim. George is consoled by his closest friend Charley (JULIANNE MOORE), a 48-year-old beauty who is wrestling with her own questions about the future. A young student of George’s, Kenny (NICHOLAS HOULT), who is coming to terms with his true nature, stalks George as he feels in him a kindred spirit.

Tom Ford’s feature debut is a triumph of style and substance, of ecstatic emotions and deadening grief which among its merits is the chance it gives for its lead, Colin Firth, to realise his potential as an actor with a performance worthy of the awards nominations it is receiving. He has done some fine work in recent years and, while making a living out of the legacy of Mr. Darcy in comedies rarely worthy of the name, in A Single Man his quality shines.

Firth’s typecasting is not a surprise. It happened when he emerged drenched from a swim in the BBC’s iconic 1995 adaptation of Pride and Prejduice, further stapled to the subconscious with his roles as Mark Darcy (see what they did there?) in Bridget Jones’ Diary. He was eternally the emotionally repressed, upper class snob, morally and socially ambiguous, but in Tom Ford’s film Firth is afforded the opportunity to shed the light, literary mask and bring an emotionally complexity to his role as English Professor George Falconer, an Englishman abroad in 1962 America, a gay man whose life is perfectly settled and untroubled, until a sudden tragic event happen. His emotions are repressed but not concealed, his public identity constructed not because of pride or embarrassment, but for survival. Firth is magnetic in the role, and leads us through every moment of this film with grace and considerable character.

Witness the moment in the film when he learns, via a phone call from a perturbed and uncomfortable family member, that his lover has died in a car crash. The agony, the horrific realisation as the force of the sudden, unlooked for despair hits him, is choking. Ford’s camera interrogates Firth’s face as it falls, as his world shrinks, and the strongest bond he has is cut, and his future nothing but a collection of loose ends. All the while he is unable to find release, he cannot mourn because he shouldn’t exist. To be denied the ability to mourn is one step beyond pain, yet Firth remains composed, his words carefully chosen and the mask does not crack. It is a powerful scene, and Firth plays it perfectly.

Ford’s decision to begin the film with the death of Jim and tell the love story in reverse, through fragmented moments, is a bold move, and as it crosses the slow forward motion through George’s self-proclaimed last day the weight of the film is given time to build, and it carries us through to the bitter end. The disquieting sense of grief is played against the normality of a day’s work, it is a heavy burden for Firth and for us, he is angry against his better judgement, the futility of his day and of his endless guilt and regret.

Tom Ford brings his experience in design and fashion as well as architectural appreciation, to bear on each shot in the film. The production design evokes the early 1960s with a flair and depth, rendering a perfect background for the tragic play to unfold. There is a make or break moment when, as George stumbles into flirtatious conversation with a student (Nicholas Hoult, in a superb turn) and the grainy, diluted tones the film has displayed thus far begins to flush with colour. This happens again and again, as the blood returns to George’s heart at the sight of topless male tennis players, or the aforementioned flirtation, and in particular in the random encounter with Jon Kortajarena, playing an impossibly perfect young man, acted out under the watchful gaze of a poster of Janet Leigh’s terrified eyes in a Psycho poster.

The artifice of the colour blooms and the back to front dovetailing narratives may put some people off, to me it worked and drew me in. Ford’s camera is intimate and detached in equal measure. It is a bold move and succeeds on every level.

Ford offers up close ups of facial features, jump cuts during a conversation of Firth’s gaze moving, focusing on eyes shadowed in blues and greens, pink lips talking, the male and female bodies fragmented. He sees a family in the garden of a house opposite his, there is no sound, no connection to his life. As he drives past them on his way to work the camera slows and his eyes meets each family members, a social facade is erected with smiles and nods, then the road opens up before him and his last day continues. On leaving his house he placed a gun in his briefcase, and set out his life in insurance papers and signed documents, there is no sigh of regret; this is one long goodbye.

There are moments of the darkest comedy as Firth fluffs the pillows he uses to prop his head up as the gun is placed in his mouth, then is uncomfortable so he rearranges them, again and again. Julianne Moore has a ostensibly flighty part to play as Charley, Firth’s English friend, immune to his sexuality and hoping to hook up, a desire that is woefully misguided and their scenes together are full of spiteful banter and nostalgic wallowing. One moment, when they are past the giggly drunk stage and moving headlong towards an inescapable self-pity, they are caught under the spell of Billie Holiday’s Stormy Weather. There is an awkward dancing, a swirling miasma of regret is evoked and all that is left is for George to deny Charley’s inevitable advances, and leave, ready to die at his own hand.

Matthew Goode plays Jim, George’s lover, in flashback and their loving, teasing chatter is filled with knowing allusions and double-speak, and it is seductive. Goode’s performance is pitch perfect, essentially a tragic figure unencumbered with knowledge of his fate, his ghost permeates every frame and we are swept up in his wake. There is such sterling support from the rest of the cast but this is Firth’s film. His studied reserve, and complete rapture under the spell of forbidden love, is at turn flirtatious and profound. That Ford, in his feature debut, was able to elicit this performance from an actor playing so close to his typecasting is astounding.

I cannot recommend this movie enough, worth it to enjoy Colin Firth and Ford’s direction, the subtle and sad detailing of grief and the beautiful moment of release at the end. Sublime.

We here at HeyUGuys have a sneaky suspicion that he may in fact win it! But to tide us over for the next 5 weeks, we have these awesome new images from the movie. I think they might possibly be the best still I’ve seen taken from any film. Do you agree?

Much like the images that we put up yesterday for Cemetery Junction, this awesome gallery look uber retro, just like they’re supposed to. If you missed it, we also have some footage from the UK Premiere of A Single Man which is released in cinemas 12th February. Our review will follow in the next few days.

I love this new poster, it has a lovely retro feel to it just like all the material for A Single Man did. We put up a new trailer for Cemetery Junction yesterday too which you can see here. Let us know what you think.

The movie is released in cinemas 14th April. Click the poster above to enlarge.

We here at HeyUGuys are big supporters of Moon and all things Duncan Jones and Sam Rockwell but we’ve got a sneaky suspicion that Colin Firth could not only get nominated but may win the Oscar for Best Actor. I guess we’ll find out later on today if our suspicions of them even being nominated will come to fruition but in the meantime, here’s some footage from the UK Premiere of A Single Man that took place last night.

The footage includes in interviews with director, Tom Ford and cast members, Colin Firth, Matthew Goode and BAFTA Rising Star Nominee Nicholas Hoult for you to feature on your site. Enjoy it and come back later to find out if we were right about Firth or join us when we’ll be live tweeting as events unfold.

To celebrate the return to work after two glorious days off, we have a brand new trailer for the Stephan Merchant / Ricky Gervais comedy, Cemetery Junction. It’s great to see these great friends and writers working back together again after such awesome series as The Office and Extras.

It stars Felicity Jones, Christian Cooke, Jack Doolan, Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode and the man himself, Mr. Gervais.

Cemetery Junction gets it’s name as it’s about being trapped in a small town that you have no escape from, in this case Reading which is in the South of England, just off the M4 for anyone not in the know!

It’s scheduled for release 7th April so keep your eyes peeled for more on this one.

Hosting the Golden Globe Awards last night seemed to go down very well and today, our friends over at Sky Movies HD have got some brand new images from Ricky Gervais’ new movie, Cemetery Junction. The difference in this one to his last two (Ghost Town / The Invention of Lying) is that he’s re-joined forces with his old buddy, Stephan Merchant (they created The Office together) and have written and directed this latest movie. It stars Emily Watson, Ralph Fiennes, Matthew Goode and the man himself, Mr. Gervais.

Leap Year is directed by Anand Tucker and also stars Matthew Goode and John Lithgow. I’ve put the new trailer below the synopsis and you can click the image above to enlarge. Leap Year is released 26th February.

Amy Adams (SUNSHINE CLEANING, DOUBT, ENCHANTED) is a young woman who has an elaborate scheme to propose to her boyfriend on Leap Day, an Irish tradition which occurs every time the date February 29 rolls around. However she faces a major setback when bad weather threatens to derail her planned trip to Dublin. With the help of an innkeeper, however, her cross-country odyssey just might result in her getting engaged.

From the director of RED RIDING 1983 and AND WHEN DID YOU LAST SEE YOUR FATHER, LEAP YEAR is a charming and quirky love story which is guaranteed to leave it’s audience leaping for joy.
