Come Fly with Me is far more than an airport bound Little Britain Part Two as the documentary format allows for some slow burning character development which wasn’t always a feature of the preceding show. One Vicki Pollard sketch was much like another and there’s mileage in the catchphrase comedy, particularly with these two clearly having the time of their lives and choosing to rarely simply rely on the characters doing nothing but spouting the usual lines, but CFWM is a little different, and is all the better for it.

With Come Fly with Me their scene is set in and around an airport with low-cost airline Fly-lo providing the basis for the various dregs of human ghastliness on offer. The snobbish first class stewardess is Walliams at his best with barely contained hatred lining up very nicely with the torrent of sycophancy towards the business class passengers. Lucas has Taaj Manzoor, the clueless member of the ground staff and camp as a Christmas Cruise steward Fearghal O’Farrell and what you begin to notice as the various storylines play out is that what the pair have done is take the obvious conventions, give us the easier jokes initially and then develop against type.

As was true with Little Britain it is when the pair are on screen together that it all comes together with the feckless check-in ladies Melody and Keeley and the terrifying Martin Clunes obsessed Japanese schoolgirls Asuka and Nanako being memorable (though perhaps for the wrong reasons). It’s a carnival of the miserable and the mindless and, while it hasn’t reached the heights of their previous work, there is much here to enjoy and the promise of better to come.

***~~ (3/5)

Extras

The highlight of the whole Blu-ray package is the hourlong behind the scenes documentary Come Fly on the Wall, presented by Mark Lawson which is comprised of

It’s a very enjoyable an enlightening hour, a million miles from the perfunctory studio-approved talking heads backslap which is the norm here. The two are very candid about their fears, their abandoned ideas for the show (a hotel was proposed at one point, then sensibly retired), the accusations of racism and their working relationship. I actually enjoyed this documentary a little more than some of the shows themselves and it’s one of the best bonus features I’ve seen this year. Highly recommended.

Starring and co-written by ex-Saturday Night Live member Kristen Wiig (in a breakout performance), she plays Annie, a single gal in her mid-thirties who is struggling with life. Financially she’s suffering (her dream business has gone bust, swallowing up any savings she had) and on the relationship front, her only sexual outlet is a series of cold, no-strings-attached rendezvous with a heartless cad named Ted (a loose and very funny Jon Hamm).

A ray of sunshine comes in the form of childhood best friend Lillian, who announces she is engaged and would love Annie to be her maid of honour. Annie’s plans to give her BBF a bachelorette party she won’t forget prove to be tougher than she envisioned when she runs into competition from Helen (Rose Byrne), the wife of Lillian’s fiancé’s boss and all-round do-gooder, whose own luxurious celebratory schemes differ greatly from Annie’s budget-restricting plans.

Thus begins a series of disastrous get-togethers with the trio and the rest of the bridesmaids (including Melissa McCarthy’s Zach Galafiankis-esque turn as future sister-in-law Megan) where friendships are tested and violent bowel movements are inadvertently triggered.

Co-producer Judd Apatow has once again assembled some serious talent together (it’s his biggest-grossing production yet), and with old collaborator Paul (Freaks and Geeks) Feig at the helm, they’ve fashioned a very funny, sometimes moving tribute to sisterhood which doesn’t skimp on the gross-out quota either (the aforementioned dress fittings session which rapidly descends into a shower of body fluid messiness is just as funny and disturbing on second viewing). The ensemble cast all manage to bring something to the table too, but it’s the fantastic Wiig’s show, and she proves to be a real comedic tour de force, particularly during an ill-fated flight to Las Vegas the ladies embark upon. Her scenes here truly establish her as a major talent, and she’s something of a snarky, coarser version of Diane Keaton.

It’s also nice to see a couple of faces from the land of UK TV in amongst the American cast. Matt Lucas has a small role as Annie’s overbearing flatmate but it’s The IT Crowd’s Chris O’Dowd who is the export that really shines. His winning and extremely likable turn as a sympathetic cop and potential suitor for Annie is a welcome addition to a largely female cast, and he looks completely relaxed and at ease as the romantic interest.

While Bridesmaids hardly rewrites the rules of the genre (it tends to stick pretty close to that tried-and-tested comedic formula) and suffers from the apparent insistence from Apatow that all his films need to run for over two hours, there’s much to like here. The film will undoubtedly find that similar-sized audience who trekked in droves to see it on the big screen and (for the most part), it’s fully deserving of that success.

****~ (4/5)

Extras

There is the option here (seemingly commonplace for all US mainstream comedy films of the last few years) to access an ‘Unrated Version’ of the film alongside the theatrical one.

Feature commentary with director Paul Feig, co-writer Annie Mumolo, and the bridesmaids from the film, minus Rose Byrne (Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper).

Also included is a gag reel, ‘Line-O-Rama’ (verbal gags from the film all played together), three deleted scenes (one involves none other than Paul Rudd as one of Annie’s blind dates), extended and alternate scene, and a horrid in-film commercial for Cholodecki’s (the jewellery store Wiig’s character works at).

I sat down with director Paul Feig and actor Chris O’Dowd to talk about this hit movie and asked them what it was like working with so many women. And gentlemen believe me this movie is as much for us guys as it is for the girls, Hilarious.

We find what it’s like working with some many women on the movie and how O’Dowd ended up playing the character in his native Irish accent rather than putting on an American one as well as when both Feig and O’Dowd hit rock-bottom in their working lives.

Bridesmaids is a fantastic movie and it’s released in UK cinemas today, 22nd June.

It was a movie which just went with the flow and had the audience in stitches. Some have compared it to The Hangover for women but it shouldn’t be put in the same box or even close. This movie is simply hilarious and when you watch this featurette that Universal Studios have put out via Funny or Die, you’ll see why.

The featurette just shows how many takes were done on each scene and it must have been a heck of a job for director Paul Feig and his edtiors to bring together the funniest clips as everything you see here is ad-lib genius! Check it out below.

Directed by Paul Feig, Bridesmaids stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Jon Hamm, Melissa McCarthy, Ellie Kemper, Chris O’Dowd, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Jill Clayburgh and Matt Lucas.

Synopsis: Upon hearing the news that Lillian (Rudolph) has gotten engaged, ecstatic Annie (Wiig) leaps at the chance to plan the perfect wedding. With the big day rapidly approaching, Annie struggles to put her romantic and financial woes aside in order to give her dearest friend a day of memories that will last a lifetime.

Bridesmaids will be released in the UK on June 24.

Kristen Wiig looks on top form and she’s got quite the supporting cast with her with The I.T. Crowd’s Chris O’Dowd making fleeting appearances.

Are people describing this as the female Hangover’? God, I hope not. Anyhoo – Dave went all the way to SXSW to see the film and his review of the movie is right here.

Produced by Judd Apatow, Bridesmaids has Wiig starring alongside Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kempe, Chris O’Dowd, Jon Hamm, Matt Lucas and Jill Clayburgh.

This spring, Universal Pictures and producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, The 40-Year-Old Virgin) invite you to experience Bridesmaids. Kristen Wiig leads the cast as Annie, a maid of honor whose life unravels as she leads her best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), and a group of colourful bridesmaids (Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper) on a wild ride down the road to matrimony.

Annie’s life is a mess. But when she finds out her lifetime best friend is engaged, she simply must serve as Lillian’s maid of honor. Though lovelorn and broke, Annie bluffs her way through the expensive and bizarre rituals. With one chance to get it perfect, she’ll show Lillian and her bridesmaids just how far you’ll go for someone you love.

Remember it’s not safe to be playing full volume at work. I don’t care where you work, click away until you’re at home and safe from moral judgements and latent bigotry.

Here’s the trailer,

I got to see a very early screening of the movie at SXSW and up until the point where I fell down the stairs leaving the cinema (yes, I am a dufus!), I loved it! You can read my review of the movie here.

Bridesmaids is directed by Paul Feig (Knocked Up), and produced by Judd Apatow (Funny People), Bridesmaids stars Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kempe, Chris O’Dowd, Jon Hamm, Matt Lucas and Jill Clayburgh.

This new trailer gives you a taste of the humour and shows the awesome opening with the amazing Jon Hamm.

Bridesmaids will be released in the US on May 13 and in the UK on June 22nd.

The movie is due for release in the UK on the 24th of June and stars Kristen Wiig, Rose Byrne, Jon Hamm, Maya Rudolph, and two people you may recognise from British TV, Chris O’Dowd (The IT Crowd) and Matt Lucas from all things Little Britain. O’Dowd has been appearing in other big US movies recently including Dinner for Schmucks with Paul Rudd and Gulliver’s Travels with Jack Black. He’s probably someone to keep an eye on as his profile rises, something his turn in this movie will no doubt help.

Here’s the synopsis,

This spring, producer Judd Apatow (Knocked Up, Superbad) and director Paul Feig (creator of Freaks and Geeks) invite you to experience Bridesmaids. Kristen Wiig leads the cast as Annie, a maid of honor whose life unravels as she leads her best friend, Lillian (Maya Rudolph), and a group of colorful bridesmaids (Rose Byrne, Melissa McCarthy, Wendi McLendon-Covey and Ellie Kemper) on a wild ride down the road to matrimony.

Before I saw the movie I had heard that this was going to be the female version of The Hangover, tapping into a section of the market that we’ve not seen before. I’d say the latter is true but the former most definitely isn’t. This is no Hangover equivalent, this is a very funny and very silly movie where you can go and laugh for the 100 odd minutes that it ran for. We were told that this movie was the ‘work in progress’ version but Feig was on stage to introduce the movie with Kristen Wiig (who was also there for the Paul premiere), told us that it’s just the sound mix which wasn’t complete and what we were seeing was the final version.

I’m not sure that is completely true as there were quite a few times when an extra beat at the end of a scene before cutting to the next would have made me laugh a few more times and it had me wondering if there were a few extra shots which might be added to the movie. Either that or just a split second or two more to pause on the comedy which just happened.

Kristen Wiig is awesome in this movie and is cast perfectly. Her comedy timing and dry humour is perfect and you really want her to succeed in the way she lives life and to overcome all the hurdles which get in her way. Equally, Rose Byrne who plays the unintentional (?) antagonist in the movie, is unlikable yet funny with it and Feig has got the perfect balance between comedy and a really funny dramatic story.

I had a hard time adjusting to O’Dowd as the main love interest in the movie as I just couldn’t see past his roles in the IT Crowd but for a US audience, I don’t think that it will cause too much problem as very few people here (as I write this!) will know who he is. It did seem odd having an Irish policeman in the film but it kind of works! Equally, seeing British fav, Matt Lucas play the role of the landlord (and I can’t confirm it but I think another character in the movie which I won’t spoil) was brilliant. The man can do anything and plays both parts (if he is indeed in two – IMDb only has him listed as one but with no name attached), perfectly.

In this movie there are three scenes which will have you in stitches. I shall give no spoilers other than prepare for the Bridal Dress shop, the flight to a certain party state and the Bridal shower. The audience were all completely creasing up and bear in mind that a lot of these guys are movie critics, it was great to see everyone enjoying such a great comedy, something which these days is a rare thing!

Universal Studios may have tapped into a market which they thought might work well with The Hangover fans out there but this is my no means the same film in female form. It’s a brilliantly funny comedy which possibly could have been a little bit funnier with a few minor adjustments. Saying that, the run time was rather long but I did very much enjoy the movie from start to finish and will be recommending it to all my friends!

I can say with my hand on my Disney animation loving heart that I was thrilled to finally meet somebody I could thank in person for the likes of Belle and Woody. Asbury proved to be brilliantly charismatic man and as he let HeyUGuys in on how Elton John persuaded him to direct Gnomeo & Juliet which will be released Friday January 11th it became all too clear how easily one might be swept into the magic. Take a peek and see firsthand his opinion on how animation has progressed in the last 30 years of his startlingly impressive career.

Gnomeo & Juliet is out in UK cinemas today!

Shakespeare never got cuter, it seems. Kelly Asbury and co. bring the bard’s tale to the big screen in 3D in one of the most charming and child-friendly ways possible, whilst educating the little darlings in the process.

Yes, garden gnomes are used to retell the tale of forbidden love across the divide – or the garden fence in this case – and there’s a touch of Shakespeare’s As You Like It thrown in for good measure to a rocking Elton John soundtrack. As the chubby porcelain figurines never fail to put a smile on the face, Gnomeo & Juliet comfortably sets the scene for a quintessentially eccentric British tale.

Garden gnomes Gnomeo and Juliet find love one night under the moonlight in an overgrown garden, whilst trying to locate a flower, and Juliet wows Gnomeo with her ninja moves. The trouble is, Gnomeo is a Blue-hatted gnome and Juliet is a Red-hatted one, and never the twain shall meet. But with the help of an abandoned plastic pink flamingo, this diminutive young couple find lasting happiness and unite the warring factions.

The beauty of this film, apart from its eccentricity and originality in bringing garden ornaments to life is the visual background detail that will be lost on one viewing. There are so many references that it does require a second sitting. Initially, the thought of just sitting through one was a little daunting, but this story draws you into a magical existence, and is so soft hearted and daft at times in that delightfully British ‘Carry On Laughing’ way that it’s hard not to be swayed by the little garden people. But don’t be deceived; these gnomes are a bunch of pottery hot heads, obsessed with blasting the hell out of each other and their neighbouring showpieces, or winning the coveted lawnmower race held in the adjoining alleyway.

Asbury has given each one a contemporary, street/garden-smart personality that kids of all ages seem to respond to in this day and age for things to be a little more ‘believable’. Don’t expect the idyllic tales of days gone by, like Tangled this is animation for the Noughties, where it seems innocence has long gone and been replaced with reality injections, as well as the token adult double entendres to be considered all-round family entertainment. Even though there is one ‘traumatic’ scene involving a lawnmower that will cause trouble for some parents with sensitive youngsters, everything else is kept clean and above board – albeit it there is a mankini-wearing, gay fellow who brightens up the flowerbeds.

Indeed, the film-makers have been very fortunate in bringing the characters to life with a fantastic cast that includes the voices of James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Jason Statham, Maggie Smith, Patrick Stewart, Ashley Jensen, Matt Lucas, Stephen Merchant and even Ozzy Osbourne as a bad-joke-telling gnome. For this reason alone, the film has some impressive credentials.

As for the 3D, it was put to good use, as only animation seems to know how, and was comfortable on the eyes, helped in part by the vivid colours and amenable pace. Indeed, there is some painstaking detail, from the visual dust and fluttering foliage, to the sound of chinking hats and miniature torsos that just remind you that you are still in fact watching gnomes. And as new daddies, Elton and David Furnish are producing, fans of the music will get an added thrill that tops the Englishness of the whole affair, especially when one gnome ‘goes all flamboyantly Elton’ on us.

Admittedly, there have been far better offerings of late in this genre, with Disney certainly leading the way. Cynically, you could argue that Hollywood loves to cash in on a Shakespearean tale, even to the point of the flaming obvious with a showman statue of the bard making an appearance in this film. But although there are some Tinseltown additions (the glitzy ‘Disney’ style pink castle that would never see the light of day in a gnome-filled English garden), Gnomeo & Juliet still feels almost homegrown, gleefully celebrating English quirkiness, fetishes and way of life, even though the topics have universal significance. It’s a bit of colourful fun that fast turns into a surprisingly guilty pleasure, to be honest. You’d have to have a heart of stone not to be entertained.

This could be your chance walk the same red carpet as the many stars of the film which includes Emily Blunt, James McAvoy, Patrick Stewart, Jason Statham, Maggie Smith, Michael Caine and Matt Lucas. Following the movie, legendary musician, Elton John (who’s voice appears in the movie) will be performing and this is your chance to join them.

Gnomeo & Juliet his UK cinemas February 11th.

This February, garden rivalry is taken to new heights as we introduce a world you have never gnome before! The hats are off as the infamous star-crossed lovers and their colourful companions come to life in the hilarious, action-packed, family 3D adventure, GNOMEO AND JULIET.

Set in the gardens of fair Verona Drive, we witness the blossoming romance of two young gnomes, Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet (Emily Blunt), amidst a turf war between the reds and the blues. Between the high-speed lawnmower chases and stealth missions, hearts (and hats) are broken, loyalties are tested and garden boundaries drawn, but can true gnomance conquer all? When your best friends are an over-excitable frog, a lovelorn flamingo, a loyal mushroom, a team of Bond-esque bunnies and a dopey fawn, there’s a shedload of fun and adventure around every plant pot!

Gnomeo and Juliet is described by professional synopsis writers as ‘hilarious’ and ‘action-packed’ and ’3D’ with ‘high-speed lawnmower chases’ promised in amongst all the ‘gnomance’.

The puns on the three new posters don’t so much tickle the ribs as kick you to the ground and stamp their hilarity onto your face forever. Whatever picture of the future we end up with take a look at the cast and weep openly as you imagine what they could have done with their time if they weren’t recording voices for this film – James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Matt Lucas, Maggie Smith, Michael Caine, Stephen Merchant, Ashley Jensen, Jason Statham and Ozzy Osbourne.

Yes – Ozzy is in the film too. Don’t believe me?

And there’s more! A Trailer and images – right here! Click you fools, click!

Ok, so you’ve survived so far – here’s the three new posters. The middle one in particular makes me want to drag this film out into the street and lay waste to its charmless drollery.

Don’t look at me – this is IMPA’s fault.
