We heard late last year that Matthew Vaughn has the film rights to Mark Millar’s upcoming comic, The Secret Service, which should see its first issue released sometime this year.

Millar himself has been updating on Vaughn’s film adaptation, ComicBookMovie report, and talking about how Mark Hamill will have a pivotal role, but won’t be starring as a lead, so probably more of an important cameo.

The comic book writer spoke to ComicBookResources last month about the project that he’s working with artist Dave Gibbons on, and how Vaughn is currently writing the screenplay for it too:

“This all started when Matthew Vaughn and I were talking about ‘Casino Royale’ a couple of years back in the pub between breaks on ‘Kick-Ass.’ We loved the movie, but wondered why they didn’t do all the stuff where he learned how to be James Bond. We’ve both got a couple of friends in special forces, both here and in the US, and even the real life training, without any artistic license, is really incredible set-piece stuff. If you ramp it up a little, it makes for some incredible scenes in a comic and in a movie. ‘The Secret Service’ is about a number of things, but one of the central thrusts is about a young, wayward hoodie kid from North London learning how to be James Bond…

“This education of a 21st Century super-spy forms the structure of the story. I can’t give too much away because Matthew Vaughn and I co-conceived the thing with Dave, and Vaughn is literally right now writing the screenplay of the movie, so we’re on a non-disclosure agreement for a little while yet. But basically, if I had to say anything else about it, I would say that this is our version of S.H.I.E.L.D. or U.N.C.L.E. or any of those brilliant super-spy concepts, but seen through that skewed perspective we brought to superheroes in ‘Kick-Ass.’ It feels very, very fresh. I don’t think there’s ever been a comic like this and all three of us are very excited about it. I’ve wanted to work with Dave since I was sixteen, so it had to be something big”

Speaking on Twitter today, he had a few great little updates to add:

“Just off the phone with @HamillHimself. What an absolutely lovely man! You can find out why we’re talking over the coming weeks.”

“For anyone who wants a hint about the comic and movie Mark Hamill and I were planning last night just click: comicbookresources.com/?page=article&…”

“A full 8 page preview of this will appear in Kick-Ass 2 #7 (on sale at the end of the month): comicbookresources.com/?page=article&…”

He went on to add, speaking to CBM’s Mark Julian,

“Both our leads have to be British in Secret Service.”

“@MarkJulianCBM Haha. Got someone in mind for the kid, but we’re still mulling over the Uncle. Great fun!”

Whilst I’ve not read any of the original source material, I loved Vaughn’s adaptation of Millar’s Kick-Ass (like pretty much everyone I know), and can’t wait to see them working together again on The Secret Service. I’m already looking forward to seeing who it is Millar has in mind to play the kid, and hopefully we’ll have more news to bring on that and the rest of the project soon. For now, here are a few great images from the upcoming 8-page preview that Millar mentions, in which we can already see Hamill having a pivotal role. As usual, you can click to enlarge. And as you can probably guess, be sure not to read aloud from the images if you’re at work.

Mark Millar’s creator-owned comic label, Millarworld, has proved a veritable feast for studios, eager to produce their own Wanted or Kick-Ass. While Sony prepares War Heroes and 20th Century Fox chews on Nemesis, however, Matthew Vaughn is returning to the fold for seconds, having just purchased the rights to the comic book creator’s Superior (via Comic Book Movie).

Superior isn’t your bog-standard tale of spider-bitten geeks and brooding playboy industrialists, however, with the story instead focusing on a young boy who suffers from multiple sclerosis. Granted a single wish (by a bona fide space monkey, no less), Simon is transformed into Superior, a fictional superhero and franchise icon whom he has idolised for years.

Millar has been outspoken regarding his decision to write a character with MS, the comic subsequently attracting the attention of The National MS Society; a charity that welcomes Millar’s attempts to present the disease in a positive light.

“I wanted to write about a superhero with a disability and I chose MS because it’s something that touched one of my school-friends growing up. I’m acutely aware of the unexpected way the disease can strike anyone and the enormous difficulties it can cause. Superhero stories are essentially wish-fulfilment fantasies and nothing seemed more powerful to me than a little boy with a magic wish not only wanting to walk again, but to fly.”

“I’m delighted to work with such an incredible institution as the MS Society and feel privileged that they approached me to use this character in a positive way. We’re used to seeing characters with MS as victims and I wanted to do something where the kid is not only a lead, but the most powerful person on the planet. I’m really delighted people have taken this to their hearts as much as they have.”

With the character using his powers both for the traditional crime-fighting duties as well as slightly less conventional causes - ending war in the Middle East, feeding starving children and rescuing people caught up in natural disasters – Millar can certainly rest assured that he has achieved what he set out to do.

Although Vaughn now owns the rights, it is by no means a sure thing that he will direct the picture, too. With a track record as glowing as his, however, he really cannot sign on the dotted line soon enough.

Chloë Moretz made a real name for herself last year when Matthew Vaughn’s adaptation of Mark Millar’s comic book series, Kick-Ass, came out on the big screen.

Since then, there’s been a lot of talk about the possibility of a sequel, and in a new interview Moretz has done with Movies.com, courtesy of Comic Book Movie, she talks about how she’d love to return, and hopefully in the next year or two.

She of course made a big impression first time around as Hit-Girl, and will no doubt be doing more of the same if the sequel does go ahead. Millar’s been writing the comic book sequel and has released the first three issues, but whether the film’s sequel would follow the comic book’s sequel remains to be seen.

“Movies.com: Are they going to be able to do Kick-Ass 2 in time for you to be Hit Girl again?

CM: Actually, yeah, but I think I’m going to be a little bit older. I’d like to do it in the next year or two because I think that’s a really good time age-wise. You can show Hit Girl in a different light which would be a lot of fun.

Movies.com: Would you like to revisit her at different ages?

CM: I think it would be fun to show her, because you know her as this 11-year-old assassin, so I think it would be fun to show her as this twisted young adult, this 16-17-year-old Catwoman-y almost, twisted and dark person.

Movies.com: She could have a driver’s license then.

CM: Ex-ACTLY! Hit Girl could be riding Ducatis all over New York City. Duh.”

Sounds pretty damn awesome to me. Moretz is a brilliant young actress, and she’s proven more than once how talented she is in some very different roles, and getting to see her return to Hit-Girl as an older, slightly different version of the character we’ve already seen would be a lot of fun. Some people might question the necessity for a sequel to the film, but I think this would have a lot of potential to be so good like the original, so why not? The official green-light for the film is yet to be lit, but hopefully Moretz knows something the rest of us outside the loop don’t.

For all it did right, and I hold to the opinion that it did quite a lot of things right, it disappointed a lot of people and I doubt this rediscovered opening sequence would have held any sway with them. Available on the Superman Anthology Blu-ray set this sequence would have preceded the events we saw in the film and I’m guessing would have been our first introduction to Routh’s Superman, which seems like a poor beginning to such an iconic role.

Apparently this sequence cost $10m and is available to watch in full HD below. Several of the commenters on the Youtube video claim to have been involved with the production of this sequence which was excised during the production and taking them at their word it must be something to have your work finally make it out into the world.

This comes to us from CHUD and Youtuber ColmanReese whose other videos are all about Bernard Manning. I see no correlation.

Yesterday marked the end of the 7th annual Glasgow Film Festival, a relatively recent addition to the country’s film tradition that is quickly becoming one of Britain’s most prestigious, a love letter to cinema of truly joyous proportions.

Divided across fifteen venues, including the Glasgow Film Theatre, the Glasgow school of art and the city’s Renfrew Street Cineworld – a cinema that holds the record for being the tallest in the world and the busiest in the U.K. - this year’s festival ran between the 17th and 27th of February, proving the most successful year yet, with attendance figures which now exceed 30,000.

Celebrating both new releases and old, the Glasgow Film Festival has this year screened The Eagle, Rubber, and Ken Loach’s latest offering, Route Irish (for which I shared a screen with Oliver Wood from Harry Potter – star struck!), along with welcome revisits to The Bridge Over the River Kwai and Battle Royale – now in g(l)orious 3D. With Kick-Ass creator Mark Millar playing as integral a role to the event as ever, it was no surprise to see the comic book writer showcasing Superman II as part of the festival’s Superheroes in Glasgow strand, as well as offering his personal criticisms of audience member’s own portfolios.

Choosing to this year honour one Meryl Streep, the festival presented nine of the actress’ most beloved movies, returning The Deer Hunter, Sophie’s Choice and Out of Africa, among others, to the big screen for one esteemed celebration of the respected Dancing Queen – who has amassed an impressive sixteen Oscar nominations over the years.

Simultaneously celebrating the best of British, Bollywood cinema and fashion in film, the Glasgow Film Festival has done its best to cater to everyone as it attempts to honour both big and small budget productions from home and away.

Though it may seem at times as though every city and their cathedral has a film festival these days, Glasgow is growing into quite the heavyweight, worthy of mention alongside fellow big-hitters London and Edinburgh. With thoughts soon turning to 2012′s festivities, Glasgow may well prove the place to be.

HeyUGuys reader, Nick Acott sent us a link to this awesome fan-made trailer that his friend, Gary Scullion (Section33) made and it was so good, it had to go up!

Gary has used footage from X-Men, X2 X-Men United, X-Men: The Last Stand, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Hunger, Atonement, Stir of Echoes, Hex, and Heroes to create what could be a great teaser trailer for the new movie!

X-Men: First Class stars James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Lucas Till, Kevin Bacon, Oliver Platt, Jason Flemyng and Rose Byrne and is scheduled for release June 2nd 2011.

Synopsis: Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-MEN.

Confused yet?

While promoting Nowhere Boy recently, which is just reaching the United States now, Johnson spoke briefly to Movieweb on the status of Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Walls.

His comments follow both comic-book creator Mark Millar and villain Red-Mist‘s assurances that the movie was happening. Despite such talk – and the $100 million it earnt at the box office – however, there has been some debate as to whether filming might take place.

With director Matthew Vaughn and co-writer Jane Goldman currently at work on X-Men: First Class, Johnson expects filming to commence pending that film’s release. His closing comments, however, were a little less specific.

“I’m letting them just do what they want to do and we’ll come to it when we come to it. But I know that they are doing it.”

All going well, Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall should reach theatres in 2012.

I’m sold already!

Miracle Park, currently being shot in Millar’s home country of Scotland, focuses on a group of animal rights activists who break into a low-level research laboratory to find a mile-long underground base owned and facilitated by the US government.

The movie is being filmed entirely on a hand-held camera to give it a naturalistic, gritty feel, very much the antithesis of your traditional comic adaptation.

Let’s hope he makes a better job of it than fellow comic book writer Frank Miller’s first solo directorial effort, The Spirit.

In an interview with Empire Magazine, Mark Millar was probed on the direction he planned to take his Kick-Ass sequel.

Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Walls debuted in CLiNT magazine earlier this month and, while the sequel has alledgedly been greenlit, production is still likely months away.

While we already largely know what’s in store for Kick-Ass and Hit-Girl, it is only now that Millar has revealed his plans for resident evil Red-Mist.

It’s gangs going all over New York filming atrocities on their cell phones and putting them on the internet, trying to outdo each other, all at the behest of Red Mist. My idea for Red Mist was to introduce a supervillain that made Heath Ledger’s Joker look like Cesar Romero’s Joker. He’s basically Charles Manson as a supervillain.

Chris said to me he hates the fact that people always call him McLovin’. So my aim was to give him a new name for people to call him. And the villain calls himself The Motherfucker. Chris is The Motherfucker, the worst of all supervillains.

But at the same time we continue the story of Dave and all the complications in his life as he gets deeper and deeper into this dangerous hobby he’s got where he dresses up as a superhero and gets beaten up every night. So he forms a gang and what you’ve got then is all the heroes versus all the villians in a big gangfight.

So Kick-Ass is going dark, but hopefully not too serious. The source material is, after all, subtitled Balls to the Walls.

In an interview with BBC Radio Five Live, the comic-book writer explained:

“The estimate is [Kick-Ass] will do 100 to 150 million on DVD based on the American sales. So it’ll end up making a quarter of a billion on a 28 million investment. So It should be okay. So the sequel’s greenlit, we can go ahead and do the follow up now, you know. The first made so much compared to what it cost it would be crazy not to.”

With the second volume of the comic series set to debut this week in Millar’s CLiNT magazine, the movie is once again expected to follow its source material closely. Little is known about the plot for Balls to the Wall, other than it will centre on the influence of Kick-Ass and Red Mist on other would-be superheroes and supervillians.

“Dave is getting deeper and deeper into this very dangerous hobby that he has which is going out every night and getting into fights, dressed in a superhero costume and he’s actually formed a superhero team.”

Millar seems optimistic that the principle cast and crew will return for a sequel, although he voices legitimate concerns regarding the inevitable growth of Hit-Girl actress Chloe Grace Moretz. With Matthew Vaughn in the mist of making X-Men: First Class, the plan is apparently to dive into Kick-Ass 2 next year, immediately after that film’s completion.

Hopefully, however, such concerns will prove unwarranted. That is, providing Kick-Ass 2 makes it into production before Millar’s similarly touted Wanted 2.

A few weeks ago we took to the streets of London, with our Editor Dave Sztypuljak gamely adorned in the Kick-Ass suit to make the video you can see below.

To help us in our endeavour we enlisted the help of the very best real life superheroes we could find, they are: S.O.S., Kid X, the grey masked telepath (from the future) Suplex and Dr. Amazing and General Bovine from our favourite Superhero rock band, Justice Force 5.

Big thanks to Bleeding Cool and Ben Mortimer who overcame his enormous hangover to produce the video expertly.

You can buy the Kick-Ass Blu-ray and DVD here (something we strongly urge you to do), or if you’re feeling lucky you can try and win a copy of the film on Blu-ray in our competition here.

You can find out out all about S.O.S. alter ego Steve Sale’s epic documentary Superhero Me, which looks at the phenomenon of real life superheroes at his Superhero Me website, and you can watch the film online here.
The film was a hit with HeyUGuys, you can read our review here, and we have ten copies of the movie on Blu-ray to give away. You can find out more at www.kickass-themovie.co.uk

With fantastic action scenes, great humour and style, Kick-Ass is pure entertainment. When Dave Lizewski, an ordinary teenager, sets about trying to become the no-power vigilante Kick-Ass, he soon discovers he’s not alone. But he’s out of his depth – a fearless and highly trained father-daughter crime-fighting duo, Big Daddy and Hit Girl, have declared war on New-York mafioso, Frank D’Amico.

As Kick-Ass and his new found friend, Red Mist, get drawn into their no-holds-barred world of bullets and blood, the stage is set for a final showdown – in which the DIY hero will have to live up to his name…or die trying.

All you need to do is answer the following question using the form below.

Which actress plays Hit-Girl in Kick-Ass?

Today, via XmenFilms.net we’ve learned that Morgan Lily, who was last seen in Roland Emmerich’s CG apocalypse-a-thon 2012, is confirmed as the young Mystique.

The older incarnation will be played by Winter’s Bone star Jennifer Lawrence, so there’s a chance we’ll be seeing a flashback or two for each of the characters in the film.

Lily also has a role in Rob Reiner’s coming of age movie Flipped as the younger version of Juli, played by Madeline Carroll.

It’s getting hard to keep up with the cast so far, but suffice to say that everything you need to know is contained here. Still no Cyclops or Jean Grey announced yet…

Thanks to HeyUGuys reader Anthony for the heads up.

Deadline named Platt and offered up The Man in Black as his character, stating only that he’s not a mutant, and not a lot else. There’s no obvious comic book equivalent so speculation is rife about what role Platt will be taking in the story – will he line up alongside Kevin Bacon’s villain?

Platt is always interesting whatever he’s in, and I can’t wait for the finalised cast to line up in front of the press as it’ll be a strange and eclectic mix.

Here’s the entire casting saga so far, three weeks until shooting begins which means there could be another twenty or so names announced before then.

Today we learnt that the rumoured film adaptation of Mark Millar and Steve McNiven’s Nemesis is to be directed by Tony Scott. The news was first leaked out by Bleeding Cool and then confirmed by Deadline.

Following the success of the film version of Millar’s Kick-Ass, a film of Nemesis seemed inevitable but things appear to be moving pretty fast with Tony Scott already on board to direct and Scott Free producing.

Update: Mark Millar has commented on the news on the Millarworld forums and confirmed that he has already spoken to Tony Scott about casting and budget and that the budget is “way more than Wanted and Kick-Ass put together”. That’s over $100 million. Regarding the casting and Scott’s choice Millar said, “The actor he’s shooting for as the lead character is going to blow your socks off.”

Now I know a lot of people are fans of Tony Scott but I’m not one of them. He’s made a lot of popular films that I consider to be pretty terrible, although this probably isn’t the best time for me to go off on a rant about that…

Is he a good choice for Nemesis though? He may just be. Nemesis has so far been a flashy comic with not much substance or emotional resonance. That might sound a bit harsh but Nemesis isn’t entirely failing because of this. It is still quite fun and the exploitative nature of the comic has been enough to suck me in past issue one.

Mark Millar teased Nemesis with the tagline “What if Batman was the Joker?”. He also described the comic using the tagline “What if Batman was a total c**t?” which highlights Mark Millar’s particular knack for grabbing headlines. The idea is simply what if a character like The Joker had all the money and resources at Batman’s disposal but still had the same sick and twisted world view.

Nemesis is now two issues in and, as I said above, I’ve not been that impressed by it. The artwork by Steve McNiven is fantastic though (check out the below image from Marvel.com for an example of the quality of work here) but the writing seems weak by comparison.

Here’s a brief run down of the plot that Millar shared with CBR before the release of the comic:

Nemesis is the world’s smartest man, and the bad news for us is that he’s the world’s only super-villain. That means he’s got freeze guns and jump-jets and all these James Bond gadgets and he’s using them against us. To entertain himself, he picks a different cop every year and makes his life a misery. The book opens with him fucking over Japan’s top cop, and then our story, the mini-series, takes place as he shifts his attention to Washington and his first American attacks.

So what do you think of the news that Tony Scott is on board to direct Nemesis? (feel free to also leave hate filled comments about how I’m wrong about Tony Scott and how Top Gun is brilliant)

Christopher Mintz-Plasse did a great job in the film as the wayward rich kid who takes up the fight alongside Aaron Johnson’s Kick-Ass and the fact that this film didn’t do the business it should have in the States is kind of a sore point, so I’m hoping that our American cousins give this film a chance on DVD.

With news of a sequel leaking out I think it’s time to reignite the homemade superhero flame and enjoy Kick-Ass all over again.

Along with discussing Millar’s collaboration with Vaughn on American Jesus and Vaughn’s upcoming X-Men prequel, First Class, they managed to glean a bunch of information about the story for Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall.

The sequel will pick up with Hit Girl living with her adoptive father and Big Daddy’s former partner, Marcus Williams. Having left her killing days behind, Hit Girl suddenly finds that a Russian assassin recruited by Red Mist is after her. Red Mist is out for revenge after the murder of his father by Hit Girl and Kick-Ass and so goes online to recruit an army of villains to hunt Kick-Ass down.

As far as the graphic novel is concerned, the story builds towards a climactic showdown in Times Square between Kick-Ass, Hit Girl and the gang of villains assembled by Red Mist. Whether Vaughn would retain all of these elements for the film adaptation remains to be seen, but it sounds like a great idea for a finale. Millar says he will have the graphic novel completed by Christmas of this year and hopes Vaughn will be able to start on the film next April, once he has wrapped up his work on X-Men: First Class.

You can catch the whole interview here, along with Millar’s comments on X-Men and American Jesus.
