More an indication of those in Hollywood who trend on the internet than any sort of performance-based ranking, they throw up precious few surprises.

Johnny Depp tops the actors no doubt propelled there by his performance as friendly pirate next door Jack Sparrow.

The Dark Knight understandably tops the film list as both the most hyped film ever ever ever and as the highest ranked film of the decade as voted for by IMDb’s viewership (no doubt linked to its aforementioned status as an overblown blockbuster behemoth – albeit a great one).

Lost beats off some stiff competition for the top spot in TV with people flocking to IMDb clamouring to find out just what the hell was going on and who was who and what was what before presumably giving up entirely.

Also in case you were wondering the most anticipated in production film is about a certain caped crusader whose previous outing I hear was terribly successful. Bet you can never guess what it is.

Because of the purely populist nature of the listings there won’t be anything here that hasn’t been shoved in and around your face during the entire past decade. So read on and be surprised by absolutely nothing:

Two things make this fourthquel* worth waiting for and those are 1) Brad and 2) Bird.

Certainly it’ll be fun to see Tom Cruise hanging off of another building by a slither of dental floss, and Ethan Hunt is Cruise’s most enduring character for some time, but it’s the man behind the camera who is the draw for me.

One of Pixar’s finest taking on an all out actioner is too good a chance to miss and this trailer does it job well, with the series showing no signs of slowing.

Enough of my yakking, click below and enjoy.

This fourth movie stars Tom Cruise, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton, Léa Seydoux, Michael Nyqvist, Anil Kapoor, Ving Rhames, Tom Wilkinson and is released Boxing Day, 26th December.

Yahoo had this poster first and it lines Simon Pegg up alongside Jeremy Renner and Paul Paton which perhaps hints at a larger role in the series, but the pull of the series has always been the excellent and eclectic casts dancing around Tom Cruise’s maypole (if you’ll pardon a strange bout of imagery here) and the mix of new and old blood gives each new film the opportunity to surprise.

So here’s the poster. I’m looking forward to it. It’s easily one of Cruise’s most satisfying roles and hiring Brad Bird looks to be a very smart move indeed. Can’t wait.

Abrams, who seemingly loves a good mystery more than anyone else on the planet, is behind yet another “what the devil is going on here then?” show, due to start up in the US in the autumn/fall.

This time around, the launching-off point for the show is that when Alcatraz closed in the 1960′s, it because all of the inmates disappeared suddenly, rather than them having been transferred to other facilities, as was claimed at the time. Now, the disappearing inmates are starting to return, they haven’t aged a day and someone is pulling the strings towards no doubt nefarious ends. Certainly it’s a doozy of an idea and if the new trailer is anything to go by, there are plenty of great elements at work here, not least Sam Neill, ditching the good-natured fatherliness of Jurassic Park in favour of the unbalanced edginess of Event Horizon. Here is someone who is clearly up to no good.

I suppose the issue here is not so much whether it looks interesting, but rather whether it has staying power. After 24 shot to fame, all manner of high-concept shows tried there hand and they all (such as Boomtown) floundered. Off the back of the beguiling mystery of Lost (which stretched the patience of the most loyal of its followers), we were given Flash Forward (which was canned after one season) and recent arrival The Event, which has shifted in the UK schedule from a prime time slot (9:00pm) to the graveyard shift (midnight).

Interestingly and tellingly, the article on Gordon and the Whale states that the mystery will begin to unravel next year, which seems like a tacit admission that the audience’s patience for long drawn out teasing mystery is beginning to wane. For the time being though, enjoy the impressive and anticipation-whetting trailer.

Dickie, Elba and Harris will star opposite Noomi Rapace (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo), Michael Fassbender (Fish Tank) and Charlize Theron (Monster).

Ridley Scott (Alien) is attached to direct from a script by Lost writer Damon Lindelof.

Scott described Prometheus by saying:

“It’s the story of creation, the gods and the man who stood against them. It’s not a small film. I’m using the giant James Bond 007 stage at Pinewood and six other sound stages to film it.”

Prometheus, a 20th Century Fox production, is set to be released on June 8, 2012.

Harrison Ford puts down his whip and exchanges it for a mic and a serious bad attitude to star alongside Sherlock Holmes squeeze Rachel McAdams and Diane Keaton (no stranger to this genre) for newsroom comedy Morning Glory.

McAdams is a young, spirited TV producer Becky Fuller, who we first witness being let go from her New Jersey morning show when the company is forced to downsize. She manages to score a job on below-par morning news show Daybreak (any similarities between its real-life, almost identical UK doppelganger is entirely coincidental). Haemorrhaging viewers by the week, the young executive immediately resolves to turn around the show’s dwindling audience and promptly fires female presenter Colleen Peck’s (Keaton – relaxed and graceful) boorish and pervy co-anchor, and hires Mike Pomeroy (Ford), a veteran newscaster who bemoans the position he’s found himself, doing his best to sabotage Fuller’s best efforts by generally behaving like a old, petty curmudgeon (at one point he refuses to utter the word “fluffy”, claiming he’s offended by it!).

Fuller soon finds herself as referee between Peck and Pomeroy while struggling to maintain a relationship with a fellow employee (played by Watchmen’s Patrick Wilson), to save her reputation, her job and ultimately, the show itself.

Can you guess the outcome? Sure, Morning Glory may be predictable and a tad formulaic, but despite this (and having a soundtrack that sounds like it’s been sourced from Magic FM), these minor shortcomings never distract from all the fun to be had here. It’s the kind of light comedy that Hollywood does so well with the right kind of talent attached, and the film certainly comes with a solid pedigree of talent in front, and behind, the camera. Although not an obvious choice of film to brandish the Bad Robot insignia when it springs up pre-credits, Producer J.J. Abrams (Alias, Lost and Star Trek) certainly has his fingerprints over the production – from its tight and economical pacing, it the choices made in casting and direction.

Roger Michell is no stranger to this type of mainstream populist comedy (he fully cemented Hugh Grant’s reputation as Brit love interest for hire in Notting Hill) and like that film, he possesses the same, sure-footed approach here. It’s also no surprise to learn that the film was scripted by The Devil Wears Prada’s Aline Brosh McKenna. We have the same device of the plucky woman trying to make it regardless of her older, seasoned colleagues.

McAdams is her usual, appealing down-to-earth self. It’s a performance which really has you rooting for her character, as she desperately battles to improve on audience figures, whilst faced with the daily tribulation of trying to appease and pacify her two anchors. Her sweet determined nature shines through.

The biggest success casting-wise however is Ford, who is more fun here than he has been in decades, playing the pompous and cranky veteran who speaks in a perpetual growl and can’t help but continuously refer back to the more distinguished and prestigious past career he’s lived. The character could have so easily fallen into a clichéd look at bitterness and arrogance, but Ford is never OTT. His delivery is pitched perfect and his constant putdowns are often extremely biting, yet incredibly funny. It’s also nice to see that the makers don’t try and shoe-horn in a late romance between him and Keaton either.

The film loses a little narrative grip towards the end (and some of its bite) when McAdams is able to push through Pomeroy’s tough exterior to find a wounded soul underneath, but it’s to the actor’s credit (especially Ford) that it doesn’t turn into an out and out mushfest!

Bolstered by an appealing supporting cast (which also includes Jeff Goldblum as McAdams’ exasperated boss), in many ways Morning Glory is conventional, sugar-coated Hollywood fare, but it’s never less than thoroughly enjoyable.

Morning Glory is released in the UK cinemas TODAY!

***~~ (3/5)

Currently filming in Dubai, the cast and director gave a press conference where the title was revealed. While sounding like a video game spin off this does open up the series to a number of films cast out under the umbrella of Mission: Impossible, something the fourth film is rumoured to set up.

Here’s a picture of the assembled M:I agents in front of their new logo.

Part of the baffling decision to adapt numerous board games for the big screen, the Ouija board is relatively light on narrative backstory compared to fellow efforts Stretch Armstrong and Monopoly. With Battleship having to employ aliens to pad out the running time and earn the considerable $200 million budget, you have to wonder what transformations will inevitably befall this particular game – which has players ask questions of a ‘mystifying oracle’ to which alleged answers are spelled out with a triangular gamepiece. Riveting.

With Platinum Dunes behind the project – and a supernatural reputation – you could be forgiven for thinking Ouija had ‘traditional horror movie’ written all over it. Not so, apparently, with Taken’s Pierre Morel tipped to direct – and numerous ’Lost’ alumni writing – the project will more of an action-adventure feature than a traditional horror. Nobody wants to be typecast, after all.

With the L. A. Times likening the film’s proposed direction to National Treasure, I can’t help myself hoping for something a little more Jumanji. What would you like to see from Ouija?

She’s been linked to Alfonso Cuaron’s sci-fi drama Gravity of late, although it doesn’t appear that she will be signing on to that now, so maybe there’s a space (no pun intended) in her schedule to fit in a fight with those perky xenomorphs.

The prequel, set roughly 35 years before Scott’s now classic sci-fi chiller, may still have bumpy road ahead as Fox are projecting a the film’s budget will be between $150 million and $160 million – a pricey figure which will need a large audience to recoup the costs, which may conflict with the idea that Scott has of going back to basics and making it “really tough, really nasty”.

Maybe this new rewrite has managed the miraculous task of both fulfilling the directors wishes as well as the studio’s.

See him below with moustache and Russian army uniform and wonder what espionage laced hi-jinx Ethan Hunt will be getting into for Brad Bird, who as director is pretty much the only reason I’m interested in seeing another MI film.

Recent recruits to the team include Josh Holloway and Jeremy Renner, and I wonder how many of them will survive past the first half an hour?

The Hollywood Reporter brings news that the Lost star is “in final negotiations” to join Tom Cruise’s team of secret agents in Paramount’s Mission: Impossible 4.

Holloway will be joining The Hurt Locker’s Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Vladimir Mashkov as the new additions to the cast, appearing alongside previous team member Simon Pegg and loyal Cruise side kick Ving Rhames (who has been along for the ride since the first mission, fifteen year ago!).

Story details are being kept under wraps at the moment, so it’s unclear how the Lost star will feature in this. I wouldn’t be surprised if both him and Renner meet an early demise and Cruise goes on the not only compete the mission, but get the girl and flash his perma-smile too (again).

The first deleted scene is below and is called Epiphany. It shows a scene where John Locke leads Desmond and Ben through the jungle. In the scene, Desmond and Ben have a discussion where they discuss what happened when Des was brought to the island. Obviously the word bloody is used in the scene as Desmond is unable to have any lines of dialogue without that word being used!

The lovely people at ABC Studios have been kind enough to give us copies of the Lost Season 6 Blu-ray box set to give away to five of our lucky readers!!

Synopsis: With only 18 episodes left until the final episode of Lost, the island’s violent shifts through time were ended by Locke when he traveled off-island in an attempt to persuade the Oceanic 6 to return. Back on the island, the survivors’ stay in late ‘70s Dharmaville was over when their covers were blown and they were accused of aiding “The Others,” and Sayid was gravely wounded during their flight. In addition, Ben killed Jacob at Locke’s request. But since Locke’s body was found to still be inside the coffin, exactly who – or what – is John Locke? And if Juliet was successful in detonating the hydrogen bomb, was she able to reset time, allowing Oceanic Air 815 to land safely in Los Angeles, or was the island destroyed along with all of its inhabitants?

To be in with a chance of winning this quite frankly, awesome prize, all you have to do is answer the following question using the form below:

Who plays the character of John Locke in Lost?

No stranger to islands, Abrams is reportedly interested in bringing a series based around the notorious San Francisco Bay prison to US TV, with a script written by long time Lost writer and executive producer Elizabeth Sarnoff.

As with his previous TV work there’s an assumption that Abrams will get behind the project, steer it into clear waters and then step back and watch it sail into the vast ocean of TV dramas, and unless the script deals with the unrelenting drama of the American tourism industry there’s a fair bet it’ll be a period piece.

Deadline released this one.

Incredibly, the studio posted profit figures of $123 million compared with a $12 million loss in the same period last year. Overall, revenue rose 16% to $10 billion, while profits increased 37% to $2.5 billion.

The uplift has been pinpointed as being down to the healthy box office returns of Iron Man 2 and the aforementioned Pixar offering, as well as healthy DVD and Blu-Ray sales for Alice in Wonderland (despite the, I think, unfair critical reaction). The big man on campus at the Mouse House, Robert Iger declared in a call to investors (who could probably be heard audibly unclenching in relief after usually more gloomy news) that their strategic focus on branded fare is paying off well for the studio.

The profits have even been healthy enough to take the hit of disappointing domestic purses for Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and The Sorceror’s Apprentice (though the relatively impressive foreign performance of PoP will probably have helped soften that blow).

The figures look to be vindication for the studio’s decision to experiment with an early release of Alice (a month quicker than usual), as the swift release allowed the studio to cement already strong figures with the almost $67 million that the release’s three versions have brought in since June 1st.

Despite those impressive home release figures for Alice, Iger confirmed that Disney wouldn’t be resting on its laurels, having identified the DVD market as a difficult prospect:

The DVD market is challenged and will continue to be challenged… You’re dealing with a title-to-title environment. It’s very title driven. Collectability doesn’t seem to be as important as it once was other than for certain brands like Pixar.

In response, Iger confirmed that the studio would be actively seeking new approaches to attempt to continue their rude financial health. He said that Disney “will become aggressive in experimenting with new windows, including digital” to try and encourage more of a return out of the home entertainment market going forward.

According to Variety, Iger remained tip-lipped on the subject of the sale of Miramax, other than saying that the $660 million sale to the Ron Tutor headed consortium “reflects a focus on maximising our assets and devoting resources to branded entertainment with franchise potential” and adding that the sale will only have a minimal impact of future Disney profits.

Also within the Disney stable, ESPN and ABC both posted profits with the sports network’s performance buoyed by an increase of 31% in ad sales from their World Cup coverage, and ABC by overseas sales of Lost, Ghost Whisperer and Castle.

Further business reflected a relative uplift in attendance at the company’s theme parks, though it is still incomparable to periods before the economic downturn of last year, and overall the picture was relatively conservative:

Although profits decreased 8% to $477 million, revenue for Disney’s parks and resorts division increased 3% during the quarter to $2.8 billion. While attendance at Disney’s overseas parks, including Disneyland Paris and Hong Kong Disneyland, was stronger than expected, ticket sales in Orlando and Anaheim was still down 3% and 4% respectively, while the additional of a new ship to Disney’s cruise business also ate into profits.

However, the pricey addition of new attractions like the World of Color light and water show is “bringing record crowds” to Disney’s California Adventure park in Anaheim, Iger said. This month, Disney also raised ticket prices at Walt Disney World and Disneyland to move away from the practice of discounting to attract parkgoers.

Aside from the movie arms of the Mouse House, it looks like the company is enjoying the greatest return from its games wing. Following the recent acquisition of Playdom for $563 million and mobile gamemaker Tapulous, plus this week’s launch of “World of Cars Online,” revenue from interactive media soared 74% to $197 million. Losses in the division were also cut by $10 million to $65 million against the same quarter a year ago.

Going forward, while remaining in the console game market- creating Disney-branded games across all formats, like the recently successful Toy Story 3 tie-in, Disney will devote more money to the burgeoning online gaming business, which Iger claimed will grow more than 30% a year:

We’re all aware of the rapid growth of social networks and the huge popularity of games on them… We feel it’s essential for us to have a presence. We now have a diversified games business to meet consumer interests.

So times are looking good at the minute for the company, and with the intelligent approach to new markets that Iger has outlined, they can only go from strength to strength.

The details we’ve had so far about the epilogue have done little to change my view and this new clip from the epilogue doesn’t help matters as it seems a little insignificant.

There are a lot of Lost fans though that loved the finale and are eagerly anticipating the DVD/Blu-ray set so this one is for you.

The epilogue is going to be around 14 minutes in length and focus on what happened once Hurley became the ‘Number One’ and Ben followed him as ‘Number Two’. The clip released gives us a taste of what to expect.

Check out the clip from the epilogue, thanks to Access Hollywood, and below that the teaser for the box set which comes via DarkUFO.

Jack Bender is clearly a fan of the name Jack. With Lost over and Jack Shephard finally somewhere, the director has set his sights on Jack Ryan reboot “Moscow”.

The project, which has been linked to the likes of Sam Raimi, Gore Verbinski, Timur Bekmambetov and Kevin MacDonald over the years, recently added this surprise candidate to the list according to Vulture.

An executive producer on Lost, Bender was responsible for many of the shows most memorable episodes as well as episodes of The Sopranos, Carnivale and Alias. With reports that he is close to landing the post, Bender looks set to add to his feature filmography for the first time since 1991′s Child Play 3. The director can hardly be deemed inexperienced however, with Lost frequently taking a turn for the cinematic and action packed.

Chris Pine (Star Trek) has already been cast in the lead role, the plot following a young, pre-CIA Ryan as is framed by a villainous Russian billionaire attempting to attack the US economy. Filming is expected to commence later this year, prior to Pine’s commitments to Star Trek 2.
