Emily Giffin’s novel was adapted for the screen by Jennie Snyder and Luke Greenfield, whose best known previous work is the 2004 Elisha Cuthbert movie The Girl Next Door, takes on directing duties.

The cast is where these films live or die and Ginnifer Goodwin, Kate Hudson, Colin Egglesfield, and John Krasinski are the faces on the poster of this tale of Goodwin’s character falls for the fiancé of her best friend. OM, and I’m sure you’ll agree, G.

The good folks at Upbeat gathered the cast and crew to talk about their film and they certainly seem like they had a great time filming it. The film is out right now in UK cinemas so once you’ve finished watching this little clip you might as well hightail it to your nearest flickhouse to catch the film if the mood takes you.

It seems an odd time to release it since it’s not out until May and the first trailer only came out two weeks ago but who am I to wonder how these marketing departments work! This time however, Apple, who debuted the clip do bring a new poster so it’s all worth it! Click it to enlarge.

Synopsis: Rachel (Ginnifer Goodwin) is a talented attorney at a top New York law firm, a generous and loyal friend and, unhappily, still single…as her engaged best friend Darcy (Kate Hudson) is constantly reminding her. But after one drink too many at her 30th birthday party, perpetual good girl Rachel unexpectedly ends up in bed with the guy she’s had a crush on since law school, Dex (Colin Egglesfield), who just happens to be Darcy’s fiance. When Rachel and Darcy’s lifelong friendship collides with true love, it leads to unexpected complications and potentially explosive romantic revelations. Meanwhile, Ethan (John Krasinski), who has been Rachel’s constant confidante and sometimes conscience, has been harbouring a secret of his own, and Marcus (Steve Howey), an irrepressible womanizer, can’t keep his mind out of the gutter or his hands off any girl within reach.

A Little Bit Of Heaven should be on the cards – and with Kate Hudson in the lead, things look particularly promising. But that’s where the love story begins to fade because she’s cast opposite Motorcycle Diaries’ Gael García Bernal.

Although Hudson fizzles with vitality in that special way we love her for, radiating warmth through the screen, she seems to ‘burn out’ Bernal’s rather stiff appearance in every scene she shares with him, resulting in very little believable chemistry between the pair. The Latin love is simply non-existent. We fully understand and support director Nicole Kassell’s brave attempt at casting actors in roles they’re not normally associated with – even Hudson’s character, Marley, a carefree advertising exec who discovers she has terminal cancer, alarmingly, loses her light and energy by the end. But it all feels like a futile attempt by Kassell that doesn’t sit entirely comfortably. It’s also unclear as to when Marley decides to change her staunch independent ways, and let a special man into her life, considering Bernal who plays her doctor, Dr. Goldstein (a Mexican Jew – yes, you heard correctly) makes virtually little effort in the chase, short of treating her, then inviting her to a cancer fundraiser. And hey, presto, they’re suddenly an item.

That said the film does redeem itself with the family/friends casting, including Kathy Bates as Mum, and Lucy Punch and Romany Malco as Marley’s best pals, who manage to blend the comedy with the tragedy with apparent ease, supplying the laughs and the tears in equal measure. Thankfully, they throw up some believable scenarios. Cliches aside, like the gay next-door neighbour (Malco), these characters each have some quality screen time with Hudson as Marley, so we understand their significance in her life, which is thoughtfully fleshed out. Plus they all nicely piece together in the colourful and positive surroundings of New Orleans, too.

The film has its wacky moments. For quirkiness value, there’s a dwarf gigolo who entertains Marley for an evening – perhaps, an effort by the writers to highlight New Orleans’ intriguing melting pot of characters, who knows? Whoopi Goldberg also drops in to play God, literally, like an extra straight out of a Philadelphia cheese spread ad in a bizarre heavenly moment of Marley reflection. Still, it’s fun to see her, and she gets a glass of champers out of it in the end – large dollops of cheese still present. These moments certainly add comedy value, but they do seem so random that they confuse matters and the film’s pace, at times, trying to blend reality with fantasy in a not too cohesive and convincing fashion.

Hudson is undoubtedly in familiar territory that she can navigate with her eyes closed, proving once more that she’s the ‘darling of rom-coms’. Hence her fans will catch this latest film anyway. She also demonstrates something new and more mature to her acting arsenal, like a latter-day Bette Midler in Beaches. It’s just a shame about leading man Bernal who, physically, just looks rather mismatched next to Hudson on screen – regardless of the age-old saying of ‘opposites attracting’. For such an accomplished actor, he just comes across as more ‘dud than stud’ in this.

**~~~ (2/5)

With Franco having just received an Oscar nomination for his role in 127 Hours, the potential project would see the actor take on yet another real world character, playing pornographer Chuck Traynor – husband to Linda Lovelace during the time she appeared in the infamous 1972 film, Deep Throat. In later years, the retired and divorced Linda would go on to accuse Traynor of coercing her into prostitution and pornography through both abuse and hypnotism.

Kate Hudson currently has the offer for the film’s lead role, a portrayal that will be based on the W. Merritt Johnson’s adaptation of Eric Danville’s book The Complete Linda Lovelace. But it’s not the only Lovelace project currently in the works, with Malin Akerman attached to star in Inferno: A Linda Lovelace Story, adapted by writer-director Matthew Wilder from Ordeal: An Autobiography, which Lovelace wrote with Mike McGrady.

Both projects are struggling to gather funding, but there’s no doubting that Franco’s name would draw intrigue. However, due to the star’s intensely busy schedule (Franco has announced plans to direct two movies and will also act alongside Nicole Kidman on Broadway this year in David Cromer’s production of Sweet Bird), it’s as yet unknown whether he’ll be able to commit.

Synopsis: A Little Bit of Heaven” is a love story set in New Orleans about an irreverent young woman who unexpectedly falls in love with her doctor. Academy Award® nominee Kate Hudson is joined by Academy Award® winners Kathy Bates and Whoopi Goldberg, as well as Gael Garcia Bernal (“Letters to Juliet” and “The Motorcycle Diaries”), Lucy Punch (“Dinner for Schmucks”), Romany Malco (“The 40 Year Old Virgin”), Rosemarie DeWitt (“Rachel Getting Married”), Steven Weber (“My One And Only”) and Treat Williams (“What Happens in Vegas”). The Film is directed by Nicole Kassell (“The Woodsman”) from an original screenplay by Gren Wells. Marley Corbett (Kate Hudson) is young, beautiful, and wildly funny, but she’s afraid of opening herself up to true love and commitment. Though she uses her humor to prevent matters from getting serious, a life-changing visit to her doctor (Gael Garcia Bernal) sends both of them on an eye-opening adventure of mutual discovery, leading to revelations neither thought possible.

We’re off to a screening for the movie later on today. It’s scheduled for general release in the UK 4th February.

In a plot which bears more than a passing resemblance to this summer’s underperformer Knight and Day, The Tourist finds a heavier-than-usual Depp playing against type as a mild-mannered American maths teacher who meets a mysterious (is there any other type in this kind of film?) English beauty (played by Jolie), in a seemingly chance encounter on a train to Venice. We’re soon thrust into a world of espionage when it’s revealed that she is using her potential love interest as a decoy to throw the British secret service off her trail as she searches for her lover who has gone AWOL, partly due to owing a ridiculous amount of moolah to a Russian gangster (whose henchmen all bear an identical, cartoon-like appearance).

Traditionally, foreign filmmakers have experienced mixed levels of success when Hollywood comes-a-knocking. While some manage to thrive by retaining the sensibilities which made them unique (a recent example being Guillermo del Toro), others fail, sometimes by abandoning that very style of filmmaking which earned them acclaim in the first place. Sadly, von Donnersmarck falls into the latter with his film. Having made the suspenseful, sobering and incredibly moving communist-era character piece The Lives of Others, his attempts at creating a purposely old-fashioned crowd-pleaser fail miserably here.

The film wants desperately to be a quirky, romantic euro crime caper but suffers from a plot full of gaping holes, one horrible cliché after another, unmemorable and lazy dialogue (even more shocking when you realise that two of the three writers are Academy award winners!) and just a general lack of effort from all concerned. Presented with characters we’re expected to connect with, they never manage to gain our sympathy and frankly, are too dull to care about anyway, which renders any kind of emotional investment in them obsolete.

Jolie has zero chemistry with her co-star and in fact, lacks any discernible charisma in general. You almost get the impression that the director may have been aware of this as he feels the need to literally make sure that every male in shot turns his head as Jolie strolls past, in a clumsy attempt of try and illustrate how amazing she is. Depp too has very little to offer in terms of screen presence. He was probably grateful that he could make a film on the same continent in which he resides, but that really isn’t an excuse to phone it in. Once upon a time in his earlier career, a role like this would have been completely off his radar (and quite rightly so). None of the esteemed supporting players bring anything memorable to their roles either, and Rufus Sewell is cast in what has to be one of the most thankless roles in the entire history of cinema. Seriously, this guy must be desperately in need of exposure or money (or both).

It’s a horribly contrived tale with a twist ending which personally came as a big surprise to me, as I never believed the makers would seriously give credence to what they ended of constructing. It’s the kind of conclusion which hinges on all the plot pieces of the puzzle conveniently fitting together, requiring the characters to start acting in a completely alien and nonsensical way to ensure this, without any regard to maintaining continuity. The end doesn’t make one bit of sense and none of those essential narrative telltale signs and clues are planted in the audience minds throughout, meaning you’re left scratching your head and in a state of bewilderment as to how it could all possibly have come together in the way it does.

It’s likely that von Donnersmarck had to content with the usual problems associated with the politics of helming a first-time US studio feature – an issue which plagued his fellow countrymen Oliver Hirschbiegel’s ill-received US debut, The Invasion. It’s just a shame that there’s a real lack of any craftsmanship on display too.

On the evidence of The Tourist, the director may find himself on various studios’ wish lists to direct the next Kate Hudson/Matthew McConaughey action rom-com. I’m sure for a filmmaker who showed so much promise on his home turf, this is far from what he envisioned.

Adapted from the 1952 novel by Jim Thompson, The Killer Inside Me is the latest film from Michael Winterbottom and stars Casey Affleck as the despicable and twisted deputy sheriff Lou Ford who harbours dark secrets beneath the veneer of the quiet small town law-man. The film retains the 50s setting of the book and adopts a stylish noir look, in keeping with the tone of the source material. The music is also true to the period and many of the songs match the mood and tone of the film, despite their apparent jaunty and upbeat tempo.

The film rest heavily on Affleck’s performance and he is excellent in the role. On the surface Lou is mild mannered and a little naive and Affleck captures this brilliantly, aided by his youthful looks and constantly cracking voice. When Lou’s darker side is uncovered though Affleck also shines with a convincing and disturbing performance. Jessica Alba (Joyce) and Kate Hudson (Amy) are good in their respective roles, although their characters are somewhat one-dimensional and they have little dialogue or action. This is not actually a criticism of the film although it may sound like one; as I will discuss further this is important as they are how Lou sees them, to him they are one-dimensional and their apparent lack of depth is because Lou is unable to see their depth.

Early in the film Lou is sent to the home of prostitute Joyce to ‘deal with her’ in whatever way he sees fit, but instead he falls in love or what his idea of love is anyway. Torn between this ‘bad girl’ and the good girl, his fiancée Amy (Kate Hudson), and haunted by memories of his mother and his desires to live up to his image of his father, Lou begins a dark spiralling downward journey. His violent behaviour escalates and, despite the hints that he has always been troubled with violent appetites, his behaviour becomes more erratic and the cruelty and ugly urges he harbours within come spilling out.

The film is a first person narrative about a brutal misogynistic killer and unsurprisingly, because of this, it has been contentious and controversial. Polarising festival audiences, The Killer Inside Me has drawn criticism for its brutal violence and alleged misogynism. Although a discussion of just the controversy is somewhat reductive I will refer to the reaction as it actually gives an interesting insight into the themes in the film and how they work with an audience.

The Killer Inside Me is unflinching in its portrayal of violence against women and although it was not quite as bad or constant as I had expected given the hyperbolic statements from the film’s accusers, the two main scenes of violence are appalling to watch and it is hard not to look away. This is not a negative criticism of the film though, I am sure this is the intention of Winterbottom and of Thompson’s novel, and this intention is not a callous misogynistic one. The film attempts to explore this character but this exploration needs to be uncompromising and therefore deeply uncomfortable. Lou Ford is a despicable human being and the kind of person I hope I never have to meet. He is therefore not the kind of person anyone would like to associate themselves with and they certainly wouldn’t want to sympathise with him, empathise with him or worse still be him.

This though is the crux of what I liked so much about the film and why I think it is so successful. Lou Ford is the protagonist of the film and we as audiences have been trained over years of cinema going to follow the protagonist and feel what they are feeling, seeing the film world through their eyes. There are obviously exceptions to this but the way the film crafts Lou as a protagonist helps this association and the voiceover and moments where Affleck actually subtly looks at the camera help include you in his twisted life.

It is not just through the voiceover that Lou narrates the film, there is a sense that the events unfolding are filtered through his twisted view. There is a moment early on, for instance, where Joyce very quickly shifts in the way she is reacting to Lou from disgust to desire and what at first could be read as an odd character moment or sloppiness on the part of the screenwriter is actually something much more fascinating. Is this just how Lou sees the situation? Is Lou an unreliable narrator and is what we are seeing, and experiencing, actually what it is like to be Lou Ford?

I do not think these questions have simple answers and I do not think the film makes a definite statement as to whether what we see is the truth or Lou’s perception of it, but the questions are raised. This concept could be considered a ‘cop out’ in a lesser film, something akin to “it was all in his head after all”, but The Killer Inside Me is smarter than that. What this conceit actually achieves is a strong character bond as we not only see Lou telling his life story but we get to experience living his life. This is, unsurprisingly, not a pleasant experience but if you are willing, it is a rewarding and fascinating one.

I feel that most accusations of misogyny and casual violence against The Killer Inside Me are born out of this horribly uncomfortable feeling of inhabiting a disgusting human being and not liking the way that makes you feel. The Killer Inside Me offers a glimpse inside the mind of a cruel misogynist and brutal murderer and if you believe it, feel it and don’t like it then the film has succeeded not failed.

The Killer Inside Me is currently showing in UK cinemas.

You can hear me discussing the film further (and the Q&A I attended with Michael Winterbottom) on the Mouth Off Podcast which you can find here.

Our writer Craig Skinner had the chance to see Michael Winterbottom’s latest film, The Killer Inside Me, recently and attend a Q&A session afterwards, and while the momentum carrying this film out from the festival screenings is tainted with accusations of misogyny in its depiction of violence against women, there’s no doubting the skill of Winterbottom and his star Casey Affleck to make this film far more than a one dimensional serial killer movie.

Craig also posted the first trailer to come out for this film, which you can see here, and it’s a very different affair to the new trailer spun out into the world by IFC (via The Playlist) which you can see below.

There’s also a new poster which suggests serial killer to me, and watching both of the trailers (which I recommend) it is clear that they offer two distinct takes on the film – and a broad picture emerges when you see them both.

The film is based on a book of the same name by Jim Thompson and stars Casey Affleck in the title role.

The film looks like it might be really interesting and I have a lot of faith in Michael Winterbottom to bring depth to this lurid noir tale.

The film is released in the UK of June the 4th and you can check out the synopsis and trailer below.

Based on the novel by legendary pulp writer Jim Thompson, Michael Winterbottom’s THE KILLER INSIDE ME tells the story of handsome, charming, unassuming small town sheriff’s deputy Lou Ford.

Lou has a bunch of problems. Woman problems. Law enforcement problems. An ever-growing pile of murder victims in his West Texas jurisdiction. And the fact he’s a sadist, a psychopath, a killer. Suspicion begins to fall on Lou, and it’s only a matter of time before he runs out of alibis. But in Thompson’s savage, bleak, blacker than noir universe nothing is ever what it seems, and it turns out that the investigators pursuing him might have a secret of their own.

Penelope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Dame Judi Dench, 4 of the seven leading ladies from the movie were all in attendance in London’s Leicester Square and all looked fabulous (no matter what the Daily Mail say about Nicole Kidman’s outfit!). Daniel Day-Lewis, the lead male in the movie (who also gets to work with Fergie, Sophie Loren, Marion Cotillard – poor chap!) plays director Guido Contini struggles to find harmony in his professional and personal lives, as he engages in dramatic relationships with his wife, his mistress, his muse, his agent, and his mother.

Nine is out 18th December and looks fantastic with big songs, a wonderful cast and a great director in the form of Rob Marshall. I’ve put some more photos which are from the Daily Mail below.
From the look of the posters, it seems The Weinstein Company who are producing the movie have done their best to get hearts rates up using the ultra sexy cast to promote the movie in the best way they know how. Apparently another poster will be released today but in the meantime, you can check out the three below by clicking to enlarge.

I know that one of the posters has come from Cinematical. I’ve not tracked down the original source of the other two as yet.

This new trailer has a song sung by Kate Hudson over the top of it and gives us our first sense of what the soundtrack may be like. It sounds awesome and although I don’t normally like this kind of movie, I’m very much looking looking forward to this one.

This movie does look like it’s going to be a real show both in it’s artistic content and in the fact it’s a movie based on the stage. Rob Marshall (Chicago) directs and although I’m not usually a big fan of musicals like this one, it does look excellent.

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, the cast is simply astounding and includes Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren. Between them they’ve been nominated for 17 Academy Awards with 7 Awards being won. It’s nice to see a poster with an image that hasn’t been rehashed fro images that we’ve already seen. As far as I’m aware, it’s the first time it’s been released.

I’ve previously posted the trailer and images for the movie which hits UK cinemas 25th November. Marshall has previously brought us Chicago and is going to direct Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth in the “˜Pirates’ franchise.

Click the poster to enlarge and follow the links in this post and related articles below to view other images.

This post is about ‘Nine’, a movie based on the Broadway musical of the same name written by Federico Fellini and Ennio Flaiano. This movie has a cast which gives it very high expectations. The calibre of the movie is so high that it’s cast has a total of 17 Oscar nominations between them with a whopping seven wins.

The cast includes Daniel Day-Lewis, Marion Cotillard, Penelope Cruz, Judi Dench, Kate Hudson, Nicole Kidman and Sophia Loren. I’ve previously posted the trailer and images for the movie which hits UK cinemas 25th November. It’s directed by Rob Marshall who has previously brought us Chicago and is going to direct Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, the fourth in the ‘Pirates’ franchise. I’ve embedded the images below, some of which we’ve seen before but there’s quite a few new ones too which you can click on to enlarge.

Synopsis: “NINE” is a vibrant and provocative musical that follows the life of world famous film director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) as he reaches a creative and personal crisis of epic proportion, while balancing the numerous women in his life including his wife (Marion Cotillard), his mistress (Penelope Cruz), his film star muse (Nicole Kidman), his confidant and costume designer (Judi Dench), an American fashion journalist (Kate Hudson), the whore from his youth (Fergie) and his mother (Sophia Loren). The original 1982 Broadway production of “NINE,” with music and lyrics by Maury Yeston, won five Tony Awards including Best Musical.
