Others will take a deep breath and prepare for the super-cute onslaught at the cinema – there has been a two-year respite after all. But once you’ve tuned into the inane Chipmunk banter, film three in the series, Chipwrecked, still manages to charm while thrilling the kids, what with its intrepid little adventurers and energetic musical numbers.

This time, Alvin (Justin Long on helium) and his band, The Chipmunks, including smart Simon (Matthew Gray Gubler) and gullible Theodore (Jesse McCartney), are on their way to some music awards with the Chipettes – Eleanor (Amy Poehler), Jeanette (Anna Faris) and Brittany (Christina Applegate). They travel overseas via cruise ship with their weary guardian Dave (Jason Lee), and although have been warned numerous times to behave, end up accidentally going overboard and getting marooned in a tropical paradise. But the island isn’t as deserted as it seems…

Squarely aimed at the U market, watching the on-deck antics of The Chipmunks, the Chipettes and mentor Dave is very much like watching an extended children’s TV episode about the trials and tribulations of family vacationing, with very tame goofs and pranks – usually involving the haphazard Dave – from a seasonal pantomime. The narrative is straightforward, as are the set-piece setups for kids to see the punch line coming a mile off coast. Once ‘chipwrecked’, there’s precious little that goes on, on the desert island that you wouldn’t want to leave behind, to be honest, but mischievous Alvin – however irritatingly over enthusiastic – still manages to coax a giggle out of you. There is also a nice role reversal between Alvin and Simon that keeps things interesting.

In fact, it’s Simon’s adventure this time that gets the biggest laughs from the kids when he turns all Franglais on us (with the help of Alan Tudyk’s brilliant vocal skills), allowing Alvin to learn a few life lessons in his coming-of-age experience, and for comedy director Mike Mitchell and team to open up the naughty squirrels’ shenanigans and feature other members of the cast in the limelight.

Mitchell’s writing team’s rather odd ode to Tom Hanks’s film Cast Away feels somewhat mismatched and remotely dark for a kiddies’ film, but does create the film’s anti-villain who isn’t at all scary, actually – just plain bonkers, allowing the Chipmunks to go on an Indiana Jones-style rescue through the jungle undergrowth. For adults, there is the added glee of watching the whole cast – and ex-manager Ian – marooned (finally), far away from civilisation and doing harm to reassess their actions on all of us.

The infectious and lively musical numbers will have you toe-tapping your way throughout, too, which are basically high-pitched, often a capella versions of Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Pink and Willow Smith’s hits. Indeed, the phrase, “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em” certainly rings true as your senses are flooded with the Chipmunk drug. The ending is naturally an excuse for another grand musical Glee-style finale so there are no great surprises, and you are well and truly under the spell by then anyway to really care.

Some might argue about how ‘harmless’ a Chipmunk film is on the impressionable young mind, but this adventure takes the cast away from their natural habitat of previous films and shakes things up for anything to happen and some important rules to be learnt. Plus with its catchy musical interpretations, Chipwrecked has to be the best Chipmunk film so far for the uninitiated to be exposed to, offering wholesome family entertainment and a welcome glimpse of the sun, sea and sand on these chilling winter days.

***~~ (3/5)

Redford has assembled an excellent cast for the film, which had a decent, if a little short lived, theatrical release earlier in the year and the extras on the home entertainment formats include a commentary from the director as well as some historical accompaniaments to give you a little of the back story to the film.

James McAvoy and Robin Wright lead the cast, telling a story of the fallout of the assassinatin of Abraham Lincoln. Justin Long, Evan Rachel Wood , Tom Wilkinson , Alexis Bledel , Johnny Simmons, Toby Kebbell , Kevin Kline and Danny Huston are in support.

Here’s a synopsis to further advise,

In the wake of Abraham Lincoln ’s assassination, seven men and one woman are arrested and charged with conspiring to kill the President, Vice-President, and Secretary of State. The lone woman charged, Mary Surratt (Wright), 42, owns a boarding house where John Wilkes Booth and others met and planned the simultaneous attacks. Against the ominous back-drop of post-Civil War Washington, newly-minted lawyer, Frederick Aiken (McAvoy), a 28-year-old Union war-hero, reluctantly agrees to defend Surratt before a military tribunal. Aiken realizes his client may be innocent and that she is being used as bait and hostage in order to capture the only conspirator to have escaped a massive manhunt: her own son, John (Simmons).

Here’s the clip, check back tomorrow for our review of the film.

The ovie stars James McAvoy, Robin Wright, Kevin Kline, Tom Wilkinson, Justin Long, Danny Huston, Evan Rachel Wood and is directed by Robert Redford.

Esteemed British actor and Golden Globe® nominee* James McAvoy (X-Men: First Class) leads a stellar cast including Kevin Kline (Wild Wild West) Robin Wright (Unbreakable) and Tom Wilkinson (Shakespeare in Love)in Robert Redford’s compelling drama. Based on the true story and dramatic real life trial of those accused of the assassination of US President Abraham Lincoln, audiences will be gripped by this fascinating and tragic period in American history.

Stunning cinematography and a haunting score are amplified by state-of-the-art Blu-ray™ and DVD technology which evoke the steely atmosphere of the American courtroom in 1865 perfectly.

McAvoy stars as Fred Aiken, an eager, newly qualified Yankee lawyer in this dramatic film, set within the ominous backdrop of post Civil War Washington. Aiken is convinced by his mentor Reverdy Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) to act as defense lawyer for Mary Surratt (Robin Wright), the only female accused of being involved in Lincoln’s assassination, and the focus of a tense struggle between justice and duty.

The Conspirator features incredible bonus content which will transport you back to 1865 America, including an audio commentary from Robert Redford himself, a behind-the-scenes making-of feature and a series of specially created ‘Witness History’ featurettes, which give an in-depth insight into this fascinating story – from both in front of and behind the cameras. The Blu-ray™ also features an absorbing 66 minute featurette on the plot to kill President Abraham Lincoln.

Capturing the tone and mood of the era wonderfully, The Conspirator will provoke you to consider the fragility of human rights in desperate circumstances.

To be in with a chance of winning the movie on DVD, simply answer the following question using the form below:

Who directed the movie, The Conspirator?

COMPETITION NOW CLOSED

We got our first look at Channing Tatum and Rosario Dawson in Ten Year, written and directed by Jamie Linden (Dear John, We Are Marshall), back in July, and it was a nice shot of the pair with what looks to be a wall of invisible tension mounting between them.

The first clip from the film has now surfaced over at The Playlist, ahead of its Toronto International Film Festival world premiere on Monday.

I must confess that I’m yet to see any of Linden’s previous films, so I’m not sure exactly what to expect from him, though the McG-directed We Are Marshall is one that I can imagine I’d really enjoy but am yet to get around to watching.

Ten Year sees him making his directorial debut, and he’s put together a really great cast, mixing some of the people he’s worked with on the last two films he’s written and produced as well as bringing in a number of great new faces too. From Dear John, we get Channing Tatum and Scott Porter, and from We Are Marshall, we get Anthony Mackie, Kate Mara, and Brian Geraghty. And new to the mix, we get Rosario Dawson, Justin Long, Ron Livingstone, Lucy Hale, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Chris Pratt, Oscar Isaac, and Aaron Yoo. A pretty decent ensemble cast.

“Inspired by his own high school reunion, Jamie Linden’s TEN YEAR is a generational ensemble dramedy that focuses on a group of friends as they return home on the night of their high school reunion leading them all to ponder what their own lives have become and perhaps what might have been. The film’s ensemble includes: Lynn Collins, Rosario Dawson, Jenna Dewan-Tatum, Brian Geraghty, Ari Graynor, Oscar Isaac, Ron Livingston, Justin Long, Anthony Mackie, Kate Mara, Max Minghella, Aubrey Plaza, Scott Porter, Chris Pratt, Channing Tatum, and Aaron Yoo.”

This first clip sees Channing Tatum, who makes his producing feature debut with this film, with his friends eyeing his ex-girlfriend (Dawson) from afar, just before they all head into the reunion. Judging by the first picture and this first clip, there’s clearly some connection that still exists between the pair, and it has me intrigued to see what it is. No release date yet for the UK, but it’s coming out on 30th December this year in the States, so hopefully we’ll be getting it early in the new year. Without further ado, here’s the first clip from the film.

Had Alpha and Omega been one of the very first motion picture ever released, replacing – say – Georges Méliès’ Le Voyage dans la Lune, it is likely that the whole motion picture movement would have been scrapped, having failed to impress the general public, and attention refocussed on transforming base metals into gold or whatever 1920s Earth did with its spare time.

A children’s animated film released in 2010, Alpha and Omega is as unremarkable as they come. Boasting a Romeo and Juliet love story that makes the plot of Gnomeo and Juliet look hugely original, the film posits what might happen if one of the lowest ranking wolves in the pack ever fell for a member of the highest ranking wolves in the pack. Knowing that in nature the answer would be a resounding nothing, the animals are sedated and transferred to a nature reserve so that they can be coerced into “howling” at one another by meddling humans.

Surprisingly blunt about its sexual politics, Alpha and Omega is unabashed in its treatment of sex as both character motivation and a key plot point. Considering that this movie has been rated U and spoon-fed to our planet’s children on the grounds that, “look at da widdle wolves”, Alpha and Omega appears to boast the irresponsible misconception that sexual harassment is, like, really funny. Our resident Alpha, Humphrey (Justin Long), you see, wants to “howl” with Hayden Panettiere‘s Omega. Positively stalking her around the woods, his rapey attempts at wooing his resistant target are played for laughs as a golfing duck and his goose caddy conspire to get the two together.

This subtext might not have shone through so blatantly had Alpha and Omega actually been funny. Instead, a series of clichés and face-palming knuckle-punches are used in lieu of decent jokes and actual wit. Played as a lupine episode of Beauty and the Geek, the humour is so generic that it could have been sourced from any high school comedy from the last ten years. Characterisation is substituted with ‘hilarious’ faces, while the slap-stick gags serve only to illustrate just how uncertain Lionsgate are when it comes to comedy – clearly more at home in one of Jigsaw’s games. Whether the aforementioned poultry are playing golf, the characters are skateboarding on improbable chunks of tree-bark, or our favourite wolves are getting married, the laughs aren’t even unintentional. They’re out of embarrassment.

The penultimate paragraph is usually reserved for some throwaway remark about how far animation has come or how breath-takingly beautiful the 3D has rendered it. In the case of Alpha and Omega, however, neither statement would be even remotely true. More at home on a Nintendo 64 (sans expansion pack) than the silver screen, the film is slightly less jarringly unattractive on the small screen. With animation that smacks of old-school Banjo-Kazooie, only without the inspired characterisation and perfectly integrated euphemism, Alpha and Omega is a big step down from the splendour of Toy Story 3 or the majesty of How to Train Your Dragon.

All in all, Alpha and Omega is a charmless, inappropriate, derivative and deeply forgettable slice of children’s entertainment from Crest Animation Productions that pales in comparison to the good work of Pixar and, more recently, DreamWorks too. With limited special features including a chirpy Making of Doc, an ironic personality test and the joyless Log Sliding Game, there are precious few reasons to buy Alpha and Omega on DVD. Rent it from Love Film, but only to see just how bad it really is.

Alpha and Omega is released in 3d in UK cinemas this coming Friday and I got to see it a couple of weeks ago. Although it’s not based on my demographic whatsoever, I did take some good things away from it. The movie is aimed at young kids who probably haven’t been to the cinema too many times before, if ever and this will be a great introductory movie, to take them along to.

Alpha and Omega is directed by Anthony Bell and Ben Gluck with a voice cast which includes the legendary Easy Rider himself, Dennis Hopper alongside Christina Ricci, Justin Long, and Hayden Panettiere. You’ll notice Dennis Hopper’s name in there and this movie was the final one that he filmed before he died earlier this year. A tribute was very quick to come up at the end of the movie and was nice to see.

Synopsis: Just ask Kate and Humphrey, two wolves who are trying to get home after being taken by park rangers and shipped halfway across the country. Humphrey is an Omega wolf, whose days are about quick wit, snappy one-liners and hanging with his motley crew of fun-loving wolves and video-gaming squirrels. Kate is an Alpha: duty, discipline and sleek Lara Croft eye-popping moves fuel her fire. Humphrey’s motto – make ‘em laugh. Kate’s motto – I’m the boss. And they have a thousand miles to go.

Packed full to the brim with moments that will keep your kids on the edge of their seats, this movie brings fun back to the cinema. It’s colourful, fun and enjoyable.

As I said in the opening paragraph, this movie is not going to be seen by teenagers in their droves, if at all. It could have been funnier and slightly less cliched in places. Watching wolves do knuckle punches with one another got on my nerves by the end! It could also have had a few more adult jokes thrown in to keep the parents happy while watching with their kids but overall, the animation was good, the 3d looked great with some moments when wolves fly into your face and some wonderful shots of the sky, merged into the clouds merged into the land worked really well. In a nutshell, it kept me entertained for the 87 minutes it ran and will probably sell like hot-cakes when it’s released on DVD.

Alpha and Omega is released in the UK 22nd October. We currently have a competition to win merchandise from the movie here.

The movie turned out to be the last movie that the legendary Easy Rider himself, Dennis Hopper was able to make before he died earlier on this year. It also features a voice cast which includes Christina Ricci, Justin Long, Hayden Panettiere, Bitsie Tulloch and is directed by Ben Gluck and Anthony Bell.

Synopsis: What makes for the ultimate road trip? Hitchhiking, truck stops, angry bears, prickly porcupines and a golfing goose with a duck caddy. Just ask Kate and Humphrey, two wolves who are trying to get home after being taken by park rangers and shipped halfway across the country.

Back home rival wolf packs are on the march and conflict is brewing. Only Kate and Humphrey can restore the peace. But first, they have to survive each other.

The movie is set for release in the UK October 22nd 2010 in 3D.

Eliot convinces her he has the ability to communicate with the dead and is the only one who can help her. Trapped inside the funeral home, with nobody to turn to except Eliot, Anna is forced to face her deepest fears and accept her own death. But Anna’s grief-stricken boyfriend Paul (Justin Long) still can’t shake the nagging suspicion that Eliot isn’t what he appears to be. As the funeral nears, Paul gets closer to unlocking the disturbing truth, but it could be too late; Anna may have already begun to cross over the other side.

The Rom-Com’s are coming thick and fast and the latest of these is ‘Going the Distance’ which hits our screens in September. After thoroughly enjoying The Switch, could going the Distance add to my new found enjoyment in Romantic Comedy movies?

Directed by Nanette Burstein, the story of Going the Distance is a relationship against-the-odds tale that has been told a hundred times. Boy breaks up with girl, boy meets new girl, girl is only in town for 6 weeks, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl struggle to maintain a long distance relationship, boy and girl break up, boy and girl get back together, The end. Predictable? Yes! Entertaining? Pretty much.

Justin Long stars as Garrett, a lowly A&R employee and Drew Barrymore is Erin, a journalism student on internship in New York. After a whirlwind six weeks, romance brings them closer than either of them would have expected but decide to follow their hearts and endure a long distance relationship. Erin returns to San Francisco and Garrett remains in New York, but the relationship takes its toll as neither enjoy the online chats (or phone sex!) over physical contact.

Both struggle to find full time employment in their respective cities to bring them the connection that they both need. On top of this, Garrett has to overcome Erin’s sisters hatred of him after a shocking first introduction and struggles to get the support of his friends who have suffered his many failed relationships. Will they Go the Distance? What do you think!

I found Going the Distance a surprisingly enjoyable movie which is mainly down to the convincing on screen chemistry of real life partners, Justin Long and Drew Barrymore. They entertain and add plenty of laughs throughout the film and offered enough to make you at least give a dam if their relationship worked which is vitally important if this movie was work. The story was of course as predictable as watching Star Wars for the 100th time, but still, Going the Distance felt like it was trying something different with a story of the struggles of love surviving over a long distance and in all fairness it succeeds.

The supporting cast play their part in making the film enjoyable with Garrett’s friends offering a majority of the laughs with Charlie Day as Dan, Garret’s room mate and Jason Sudeikis as Box, his best friend. Both give funny, and at times, much needed laughs with some wacky humour and irrelevant advice to Garrett. Really they are just filler roles to add a distraction to the love story but I did enjoy their part in the film. Christina Applegate played Erin’s protective and erratic sister Corinne who I wasn’t sure was funny or just annoying. She did appear in some of the funnier scenes but her role seemed too over the top compared to the rest of the movie, where as her husband Phil, played by Jim Gaffigan, was very funny indeed.

It’s not a great film and at times is plain stupid, but if your a man that’s being dragged to see it it by your partner after taking her to see The Expendables, then you won’t be suffering too much. Enjoy it , have a few laughs and let the film pass you by.

Going the Distance is out 10th September. Click here to find out more on the official Facebook homepage.

Earlier today we had the Unstoppable poster, the 3d Scott Pilgrim poster and now again, courtesy of IMPAwards is a 3d poster for Alpha and Omega.

Alpha and Omega turned out to be the last movie that the legendary Easy Rider himself, Dennis Hopper was able to make before he died earlier on this year.

Back home rival wolf packs are on the march and conflict is brewing. Only Kate and Humphrey can restore the peace. But first, they have to survive each other.

The movie is set for release in the UK October 22nd 2010 in 3D.

Going The Distance has been directed by Nanette Burstein, and once again reunites Drew Barrymore with her on-off lover, Justin Long. Rounding up the cast list are Christina Applegate, Jason Sudeikis, Kristen Schaal, Charlie Day, Ron Livingston and Peyton List.

Synopsis: Garrett (Long) is still nursing the wounds from a recent breakup when he meets Erin (Barrymore), an unflinchingly honest girl with a big talent for bar trivia. Hitting it off immediately, the pair spend a romantic summer together in New York City. It was supposed to be a summer fling, but as fall approaches and Erin returns to San Francisco, the spark is still there. Subsequently dividing his days between working and hitting the bars with best friends Box (Sudeikis) and Dan (Day), Garrett drops everything whenever Erin calls. The more Garrett’s phone rings, the more his pals begin to suspect that their drinking buddy is taking the relationship a little too seriously. And they’re not the only ones; Erin’s sister, Corrine (Applegate), is keen to ensure that her smitten sibling doesn’t repeat the mistakes of her past, and she makes no attempts to sugarcoat the fact that she disapproves of the coast-to-coast romance. But the heart wants what the heart wants, and as the texting becomes more intense, both Garrett and Erin start to suspect that their summer fling may just be the real thing.

Drew Barrymore has proved herself recently, especially in her directorial debut Whip It. Combine that with the host of talented supporting actors, it shows there’s definitely potential for this to be a moderate success. Let’s just hope it’s better than 2009′s He’s Just Not That Into You, anyway.

Check out the UK poster below:
