Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right) and Greg Kinnear (Little Miss Sunshine) are set to star in indie comedy The English Teacher.

Written by screenwriting duo Dan and Stacy Chariton, The English Teacher follows a high school English teacher Linda Sinclair (Moore), whose life is upended when a former star pupil returns to her small town after failing miserably as a playwright in New York.

Artina Films’ The English Teacher will mark TV veteren Craig Zisk’s directorial debut, with production expected to start next month in Gotham.

Moore will next be seen later this month in Crazy, Stupid, Love, while Kinnear stars opposite Sarah Jessica Parker and Pierce Brosnan in next week’s I Don’t Know How She Does It.

The first thing to remember about Crazy Stupid Love is not to classify it as a romcom. Yes, the plot is centred on romantic relationships, but its comedy far outweighs the romcom elements.

The casting of Steve Carell, Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, Emma Stone and Kevin Bacon in one film is faultless, and the film is almost equally so. With the release date the end of September, and because Steve Carell gets equal, if not more, screen time than the nearly photoshopped perfection of Ryan Gosling and his abs, means that it hopefully won’t restrict its audience to couples of groups of girls and will actually remind people that a romcom means romantic comedy, and doesn’t always equate to chick flick.

Steve Carell plays Cal, a married man with three kids, whose wife (Moore) announces one evening in the middle of a restaurant she wants a divorce, and has cheated on him with a work colleague named David Lindhagen (Bacon). Devastated and friendless now that all their married friends have been forced to pick sides, he finds himself alone and drinking Vodka cranberries every night in a local bar. It’s there he meets Jacob (Gosling), a suave and smooth talking womaniser who decides to take pity on Cal, take him under his wing and teach him how to become a man. While tutoring Cal, Jacob meets the only woman to resist his charms, Hannah (Stone).

The calibre of actors in this film is evident enough that you’re going to enjoy this film without a doubt. This year has been one of Gosling’s best; along with this film his rap sheet includes the award winning films Blue Valentine and Drive, and the forthcoming film The Ideas of March, while Emma Stone who has stunned audiences in past films Superbad, Zombieland and Easy A stars in the highly anticipated films The Help and The Amazing Spiderman. Although well known for The Office, Carell has shown his comedic side in films from The 40 Year Old Virgin, Get Smart, and Date Night. Not only are the adult actors superb, but the kids steal their fair share of scenes as Jonah Bobo plays son Robbie, hopelessly in love with his babysitter Jessica (Analeigh Tipton) which produces a very amusing side plot, and is determined to get his parents back together.

One thing that makes Crazy Stupid Love stand out is that it has a twist. Not an earth shattering changes the whole meaning of the film twist, but an I Did Not See This Coming I Might Die Of Laughter twist that ensured everyone in the cinema was doubled over with laughter. The chemistry between Carell and Gosling is utterly fantastic, and the whole cast just seemingly fit together.

The script is good, but in other actors hands this film could have gone a completely different way. As it stands Crazy Stupid Love is an example of how comedy and romance can work together to produce a fantastic and utterly enjoyable film you’ll want to watch again the moment you leave the cinema.

Crazy, Stupid, Love is a funny and fresh romantic-comedy that does a lot of things right and uses the charm and beauty of its actors to enhance a good script and keen direction.  It’s the kind of movie that you can’t help but get lost in and makes for one of the best romantic-comedies of the year.

The movie juggles many different story lines and characters, but mainly revolves around Cal (Steve Carell), a newly divorced man who was married for 25-years and had only ever had sex with his now ex-wife Emily (Julianne Moore), his high-school sweetheart.  Meanwhile, Cal and Emily’s son Robbie (Jonah Bobo) is in love with the babysitter Jessica (Analeigh Tipton), who is secretly in love with Cal; I know, I know, but stay with me.  After Emily reveals to Cal that she had an affair with a co-worker David Lindhagen (Kevin Bacon), Cal ends up in a bar to drink his sorrow away.  This is where Jacob (Ryan Gosling) comes in.  The previous night Jacob struck out with Hannah (Emma Stone) and now has decided to take Cal under his wing and teach him the way of the lady’s man.

This is a set-up that in lesser hands would be a recipe for disaster but thanks to a tightly written script from Disney-Pixar scriber Dan Fogelman, the story actually works and its maturity and wit shines through.  The direction by Glenn Ficarra and John Requa takes all of the good things about the story and enhances them by making the characters believable and keeping them from going over-the-top, which makes the whole film feel genuine and gives these characters real pull and likability.  Simply put, it’s nice to see a romantic-comedy that is actually quite funny.  Carell gives a great perform here, and plays the character with restraint when he has to but knows when to let lose, with all the nuance that comes with Carell’s comedy background.  Gosling is very charismatic in the role of the absolute stud, and displays some very impressive comedic chops to his already dynamite acting ability.  Probably the most interesting and funny characters in the film are Kate (Marisa Tomei) and Hannah (Emma Stone). Stone in particular plays the one that got away from Gosling and injects humor and smarts into every scene she is in.  All of the performances in the film make for an ensemble that’s hard to beat within the genre.  All of this culminates in an ending that is sure to surprise and will definitely have you talking all the way out of the cinema.

Crazy, Stupid, Love is not without flaws though.  It’s not abundantly clear why Gosling’s character has decided to help Carell’s character and much of the story with Robbie and the babysitter Jessica seems to distract from the main storyline a little more than is necessary.  These are minor quarrels within the story and are necessary evils for the film to pay-off in the end, but to call the film a prefect rom-com is an inaccuracy, but what romantic-comedy is?

All in all, Crazy, Stupid, Love despite minor  is one of the best romantic-comedies of the year, and will hopefully lead to more films using love for more mature and funny storytelling and less for crazy and stupid films.

HBO have released the first look image of Julianne Moore (The Kids Are All Right) as Sarah Palin in HBO’s Game Change.

Game Change is about the 2008 presidential election and follows John McCain’s campaign, from his selection of Sarah Palin as his running mate to their ultimate defeat in the general election.

Ed Harris, Woody Harrelson, Melissa Farman, Larry Sullivan and Jamey Sheridan will star opposite Moore.

Jay Roach (Meet the Parents) is attached to direct, with production set to begin on Wednesday.

Following on from the news of Julianne Moore being cast as Sarah Palin in HBO’s Game Change, another equally solid actor is now onboard to play her once intended first-in-command.

The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Ed Harris will play presidential candidate John McCain in the film, which focuses on the Republican’s 2008 presidential campaign and defeat.

The film is being made by Austin Powers/Meet The Parents helmer Jay Roach – a seemingly left-field choice for such material, but he was also behind HBO’s 2008 Emmy-winning politically-themed Recount.

Julianne Moore has been cast in Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Seventh Son.

Moore will star opposite Jeff Bridges (Tron: Legacy) in the adaptation of Joseph Delaney’s The Spook’s Apprentice, the first story in the fantasy-adventure series The Wardstone Chronicles.

The plot is centred around a 13-year-old farm boy named Tom who lives in the countryside of The County. As Tom is the seventh son of a seventh son he is able to see things others cannot, such as boggarts, ghasts, ghosts and others, which is traditional in The County.

Previous talk was of Alex Pettyfer (I Am Number Four) and Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone) filling the roles of Tom and Alice respectively. But with Lawrence’s recent casting in The Hunger Games, and Pettyfer’s star rising, it seems likely the roles will go to another two up-and-coming stars.

Sergei Bodrov (Mongol) will direct from a screenplay by Max Borenstein.

Production is expected to begin in Vancouver this September.

The Hollywood Reporter are reporting that Julianne Moore is set to portray Governor Sarah Palin in HBO and Everyman Picture’s forthcoming adaptation of the book Game Change, written by John Heilmann and Mark Halperin, which follows the events of the 2008 presidential election where Palin was John McCain’s running mate.

Moore is an interesting choice given her support for left leaning policies that contradict the beliefs of who she will be portraying. Although in recent years we have seen the likes of W which had a number of left leaning people involved in portraying George Bush’s time in office. Here’s hoping Game Change is considerable better than W though.

News on who will be filling other key roles has yet to be revealed but Jay Roach will be directing with a script by Danny Strong, a start date for the production has also yet to be announced. Roach is more commonly associated with comedies but has previously tackled political material with the star studded TV movie Recount, which was also written by Strong.

You’d have thought that Tina Fey would have been an ideal choice given her SNL performances but obviously they’re not going for the comedic angle. Whether this will be released theatrically or will be a TV special has yet to be announced but given the involvement of Moore it’s safe to say that some Awards season recognition is expected.

Here’s some crazy news that has come from nowhere (and could be complete rubbish) or Tara Reid has just decided to have a joke with the person interviewing her. But in this interview with Hollywood.tv, the actress who appeared in the original 1998 Coen Brothers directed movie, The Big Lebowski as Bunny Lebowski, she says that this year she’s going to be filming The Big Lebowski 2. She then goes onto say that the whole cast will be back but from what she says next, I think that’s about American Pie 4 but she definitely mentions filming The Big Lebowski but the interviewer doesn’t pick up on it.

The Big Lebowski is one of those movies that has a fanbase who quote it all the time and use it as a way of life, not just as a classic movie! An example of which can be shown in the video we put up a few weeks ago where Jeff Bridges visits a shop dedicated to the movie, The Little Lebowski.

The original movie had a stella lineup which included starred John Goodman, Julianne Moore, Steve Buscemi, David Huddleston, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Tara Reid and Jeff Bridges as the legendary character, The Dude! No doubt people will start asking the original cast of the movie what’s going on with this as soon as they are next interviewed but in the meantime, have a watch of the below just after the one minute mark.

This poster for the Julianne Moore/Jonathan Rhys Meyers-starring multiple personalities murder thriller, Shelter, is horrifying for reasons unconnected to the film itself.

The Photoshop work here is truly atrocious! The image of Meyers in particular looks like it was created by a young child let loose on Photoshop for the first time. It’s disheartening to think that the studio behind the film seems to have so little regard for their product, they’re willing to sign-off on such below-par graphic work of this.

You’ll be able to judge for yourself if the film is an improvement on the efforts made to promote it when Shelter is released on the 25th February in the US (it’s out in the UK now on DVD to rent or buy).

Lisa Cholodenko directs The Kids Are All Right, a new family-orientated drama opening this weekend in the UK.

The film centers on Jules (Julianne Moore) and Nic (Annette Benning), a strained lesbian couple living in the suburbs of California, who each gave birth to one of their children using a sperm donor.

When the eldest child, Joni (Mia Wasikowska) turns eighteen, her brother Laser (Josh Hutcherson), asks her to initiate contact with their biological father, Paul (Mark Ruffalo), an attractive, single, laid-back restaurateur.

Each of the family members respond to Paul in different ways: free-spirited Jules welcomes him with open arms; head of the family Nic grits her teeth; Joni hits it off with him straight away; while Laser almost rejects him and his self-centered attitude.

The partnership between Moore’s Jules and Benning’s Nic is pitch-perfect. Their personalities are vastly different, but appear to work well together. It’s only during the film as events reach a head that the true reality of their relationship is exposed. Both actresses handle the material beautifully, forming an understandable, and wholly believable, lesbian couple.

Ruffalo delivers one of his most under-stated, yet dignified performances, displaying a range of emotions through the body of an often immature and underdeveloped man. Paul breaks the equilibrium, forcing each character, in turn, to re-address their position within the family.

Mia Wasikowska and Josh Hutcherson as the children, Joni and Laser respectively, both provide clever and self-assured performances. Wasikowska in particular, in that tricky second film, shows she’s blossoming into a fine adolescent actress.

Cholodenko’s direction is superb, using the correct lighting and camera shots to add meaning and depth to each of her scenes and character profiles. Despite sometimes verging on static, she always manages to pull it back, the sign of a truly exceptional director.

The screenplay is well executed. Cholodenko and Stuart Blumberg are able to find the perfect balance between humour and afflicting, allowing viewers to empathise with each character, never influencing our interpretation. Cholodenko’s personal experience with sperm donation quite clearly had an influence on the film’s narrative, but the film evidently benefits from the personal touch, managing to avoid common clichés and melodrama.

By exploring an experimental model of family, Cholodenko bravely introduces viewers to subject matter not normally addressed within Hollywood films. While this may put off some people, it’s something those willing to accept should celebrate.

A subplot focusing on Laser’s friendship with wayward skater Clay feels unnecessary, and the kids’ parts often feel slightly less integral than that of the adult trio. However, these are minor pitfalls, and never detract from the overall enjoyment or meaning of the film.

In all honesty, The Kids Are All Right a fantastic film, exuding charm, wit, love, insecurity and anguish at every appropriate corner. In essence, it’s a film about the struggles of human relationships, and shows a family’s love has the potential to overcome any obstacle. It’s certainly one of the finer films of the year.

This video is possibly supposed to be serious (but i don’t think it is!) but when I watch it, i couldn’t help but laugh. Julianne Moore is an awesome actress, there’s no denying – what this video does prove however is that she’s a master of fake tears. Man, if I were her partner I’d watch this video to try and make sure than she’s not just crying to get her own way cos when you see this, you’ll realise, she’s a professional tear-merchant!

Empire have revealed the UK poster for The Kids Are All Right, Lisa Cholodenko’s forthcoming comedy-drama film.

The Kids Are All Right – featuring performances from stars Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Mia Wasikowska, Annette Benning, Josh Hutcherson and Yaya DaCosta – centers on two children conceived by artificial insemination who bring their birth father into their family life.

The film has already grossed an estimated $20M at the US box office, eclipsing it’s tiny $4M budget, and amassed some rather impressive critical reactions along the way.

The Kids Are All Right will be released nationwide on October 29. Expect it to receive some nominations this awards season.
