We’re three and a half months away from the third instalment in the Men in Black series, and things couldn’t be looking better! The first trailer for Men In Black III landed towards the end of last year, and if you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend you rectify that, because it looks so good. Every bit as good as the first two films, with the addition of a decade’s progression in special effects.

We’ve now got an absolutely fantastic new image from the film, courtesy of IMDb, in which we see Will Smith riding what has to be one of the coolest and most futuristic vehicles I’ve ever seen. We can also see Josh Brolin in the background as the Young Agent K, which means that this ridiculously cool futuristic vehicle is presumably actually from the 1960s in the film, so I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in the present day!

“In Men in Black III, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.”

Barry Sonnenfeld returns behind the camera once more, with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones of course reprising their roles and a host of new faces, including Brolin, Emma Thompson, Alice Eve, Bill Hader, Nicole Scherzinger, and Jemaine Clement as the main villain, who we got a good look at last month.

Men in Black III will be with us in 3D on 25th May, which should be a fantastic way to end the spring and get the summer box office off to a good start. For now, here’s the excellent new image of Smith and Brolin. It surfaced last month in small scanned form, but now we’re getting it in brilliant hi-res, and it looks so cool. And as usual, you can click to enlarge. This is going to be good.

Ruben Fleischer’s first foray away from the comedies we’ve seen from him so far – notably Zombieland and 30:Minutes Or Less – looks set to be very impressive. Gangster Squad, previously known as The Gangster Squad, should be one of the best films of the year, with a fantastic cast that includes Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, Giovanni Ribisi, Nick Nolte, Michael Peña, Anthony Mackie, and Robert Patrick.

Pretty damn awesome. We’ve now got a brilliant new image to share with you, courtesy of the LA Times via FirstShowing, that takes a look at the eponymous squad on the streets of Los Angeles.

“Los Angeles, 1949. Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and—if he has his way—every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop…except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.”

We got our first official look at the film at the end of last year, with a shot of Brolin and Penn squaring off against each other, coupled with an interesting interview with the director himself.

Gangster Squad is set to be released here in the UK on 9th November, so we’ve still got a good few months to wait before it hits, but there’s every reason to expect it’s going to be worth that wait and then some. I can’t wait. Until then, here’s the new image to tie you down. As usual, click to enlarge.

If the first trailer is anything to go by, it’s going to be so much fun.

The first film was released way back in 1997, and was followed five years later by the sequel in 2002. This time around, a decade has passed since the last film, but the excitement and anticipation for it hasn’t diminished whatsoever.

A new image for the film has now surfaced, courtesy of USA Today via Collider, showing Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith looking as awesome and as suited and booted as ever.

Along with Smith, Jones, Brolin, and Clement, the film has a fantastic cast that includes Emma Thompson, Alice Eve, Bill Hader, and Nicole Scherzinger, with Barry Sonnenfeld returning to direct. The first film took more than $500m. and the sequel took in more than $400m. Here’s to hoping that the third in the trilogy will outperform its predecessors and do even better business for the franchise.

Men in Black III will be released here in the UK in 3D on 25th May this year. For now, here’s the great new image to enjoy. It’s a little grainy, but hopefully we’ll have a nice hi-res image to replace it with for you soon.

We got a brilliant look at this year’s upcoming Men in Black III just under a month ago when the film’s first trailer hit, and it was every bit as awesome as you’d expect, taking us right back to the genius that we loved so much from the first two films.

One of the most unexpected things about the production is that the lead villain’s role is being played by Jemaine Clement, one half of the Flight of the Conchords duo. If you’ve seen the show, or listened to any of their stuff, you’ll know that he’s not really the first person you think of when you say ‘alien villain’. I can’t wait to see it happen though.

Clement was noticeably absent from the trailer, and we’ve now got our first look at him looking all evil as a bearded biker, courtesy of the New Zealand Herald, via The Playlist. The image in fact seems to reveal that whilst we thought Clement wasn’t in the trailer, we did actually get a look at him transformed by visual effects in it last month. If you go back and watch (I’ve embedded it for you below), I dare you to try and tell me that that isn’t him at the 0:18/0:19-mark; the beard is too damn similar. I think that’s the alien villain we can look forward to seeing on screen, and man, are those teeth and eyes are creepy! They really do know how to make their aliens look interesting.

The film is directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, who brought us the first two films, and of course sees the return of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in the leads. Josh Brolin will be playing the Young Agent K, with the rest of the cast including Emma Thompson, Alice Eve, Bill Hader, Nicole Scherzinger, and Rip Torn reprising his role as Zed.

Men in Black III will be hitting the big screen in 3D on 25th May this year, and it looks like it’s going to be an awesome affair. Until then, enjoy this great first image of Clement without make-up/special effects, rockin’ the bearded look, and compare it with the alien in the trailer beneath it. Let us know if you think it’s the same guy; I feel like I need someone else to confirm my suspicions, just to be sure. This is going to be so much fun.

Colin Firth had been much-mooted to take on the role of the villain of the piece (though it would be disheartening in the extreme to see the shades of grey of the imperious Korean original reduced by Hollywood to such conventional character delineations), however he is now quite literally out of the picture.

Although the quality of the end product is more important than any one casting decision, this is something of a shame. Setting Firth’s more refined characteristics against Brolin’s more rugged qualities would have been fascinating, but we are only left now with what might have been.

There is no news yet of who might replace Firth, though Spike will have to get his skates on if that rumoured early-2012 shooting window is to be maintained. It is far too early to describe this hiccup as in any way indicative of production troubles, since every production has its hurdles to overcome on its way to the screen. A new antagonist will need to be found and no doubt a suitable one can and will be. As soon as we hear who it is, we’ll let you know. In the meantime, feel free to let us know below who your hot favourite would be.

Ruben Fleischer’s past two films, Zombieland and 30 Minutes Or Less, have been firmly placed in the comedy genre, the former in the zombie comedy sub-genre and the latter in the action/heist comedy, and both were absolutely fantastic.

With his next film, Gangster Squad (previously titled The Gangster Squad), he’s completely mixing things up, going back to the 1940s for an action-drama that is by far one of the films I’m most looking forward to next year.

The film is headed up by a terrific cast, including Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone, Nick Nolte, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, Robert Patrick, and Anthony Mackie, and we’ve now got a brilliant first official look at Brolin and Penn in what looks to be a pretty heated moment, courtesy of EW.

Back in September, we were treated to the film’s synopsis, which sounded immense:

We’ve seen shots of Gosling, Stone, and Brolin on the set already, but this is our first official look at the film, and our first look at Penn as the mob king, Mickey Cohen. Along with the image, EW also got to talk to Fleischer about the film, and it’s definitely an interview worth reading if you have a few spare minutes. I’ve put the first and last questions and answers below to whet your appetites, and to quell anybody’s concerns that a director with previous experience in comedy won’t be able to take on a gangster film like this – because I am so sure that Gangster Squad is without a doubt going to be topping a lot of people’s Top 10 Films of the Year lists this time next year, including mine.

“EW: This is a totally different direction for you after Zombieland and 30 Minutes Or Less. How did you go about convincing the studio that you were the right guy for this movie?

RUBEN FLEISCHER: I was just looking for an opportunity to try something new, and when I read the script, I was completely passionate about it. I think that passion and that love for Los Angeles and the love for this period of time and the love for this genre kind of swayed any misgivings the studio might have had. It’s been a real step forward for me. The size and scale and period — and just the L.A. of it — makes the movie singular and special.

…

EW: The city of Los Angeles seems like such an essential character in your story but I imagine it’s not always easy to recreate the Los Angeles of the 1940s.

RF: These places don’t exist anymore. We had to take blocks of streets and build period storefronts and recreate clubs that have been closed for years. The past two nights, we had a full tommy-gun battle inside the Chinese Theater with gangsters lighting off 50 rounds a minute. And then tonight and the next night, it’s going to bleed out onto Hollywood Boulevard as our Gangster Squad retreats. We’re going to have a full battle on one of the most famous streets in L.A. And staging a scene at the Griffith Park Observatory is just iconic because you instantly think of Rebel Without a Cause and all the great movies that have filmed there. On Monday, we were on the steps of City Hall with Nick Nolte. It’s like going in a time machine when you go to the set.”

It’s going to be so good. Gangster Squad is scheduled to be released here in the UK on 9th November next year, which is definitely something to start looking forward to. Without further ado, here’s the great first image of Brolin and Penn from the film. Enjoy.

We have loads of great stuff on the latest Men In Black film and you can get yourself bang up to speed right here.

Today’s addition to the wealth of material out there is this poster, which takes the MIBIII logo (or MIB³ as now seems to be Sony’s wont) and makes your head ache by making it look a bit like Tommy Lee Jones’ / Josh Brolin’s Agent K. If you’re susceptible to migraines, this poster may not suit you, though if nothing else you can say it is a vaguely interesting concept.

The long litany of production problems for MIB³ have been well documented already and are not worth reiterating here. Whether Sony can snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, either critically or commercially, will be decided in a few months time. But going up against a massive swell of big hitters next summer (Spiderman, Avengers, Dark Knight, Battleship) makes it all the more likely that at least one big production is going to struggle in a crowded market place.

Enjoy the poster below, if that’s the right word and watch this space for more as Sony’s marketing machinery works up through the gears over the next few months.

Source: Collider.

UPDATE – another poster has been spotted over at Filmofilia, though there’s no source for where this new one came from. It’s Will Smith making this thing look good.

The news, although not 100% yet as no formal offer has been accepted according to the Twitch report, comes amidst rumours that Christian Bale may also be joining the cast as Josh Brolin’s captor.

For those uninitiated, Old Boy tells of a man who, after being mysteriously held captive for 15 years, is set free from his cell and given the task of finding out who put him there and why. Mara will be going along for the ride as his female companion, whilst Bale will be playing the man who imprisoned him in the first place.

If the rumours are true Lee’s version of Oldboy will have quite the acting chops, but whether it will live up to the highly acclaimed original we just can’t say. If he stays true to the story, however, we’ll see Brolin and Mara’s characters going through a pretty twisted situation indeed.

Ruthless, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Penn) runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and – if he has his way – every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his control. It’s enough to intimidate even the bravest, street-hardened cop… except, perhaps, for the small, secret crew of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Gosling), who come together to try to tear Cohen’s world apart.

The Gangster Squad will open against Hotel Transylvania, Madagascar 3 and The Big Wedding.

Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, 30 Minutes Or Less) eventually settled into the chair, casting was completed (and what a cast) and shooting (presumably in every sense of the word) is now firmly underway (Ed. – enough with the parenthetical inserts) (I’m serious).

The cast list now boasts Josh Brolin (The Goonies, No Country For Old Men, Milk), Ryan Gosling (Drive, Crazy Stupid Love, Blue Valentine), Sean Penn (Milk, Mystic River, Carlito’s Way), Emma Stone (Easy A, Crazy Stupid Love, Zombieland), Nick Nolte, Giovanni Ribisi and Michael Pena, among others, many of whom have therefore worked together and/or with Fleischer before. Collider have been kind enough to line up quite a spread of on-set shots, showing sharp clothes, dapper hats and Emma Stone looking all slinky and stuff. She and Gosling seem to share an easy chemistry and the whole enterprise looks promising from the little we know so far.

Enjoy the shots below and we will of course bring you more as we get it.

It was offered to both Ben Affleck and Darren Aronofsky, who both ultimately passed it up, and then a shortlist went round that included Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Ultimatum), Francis Lawrence (I Am Legend), and Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland).

Fleischer was the one who finally beat out the rest of the competition and was given the directing duties, and I think he’s going to make something incredible with it. Collider now have the official synopsis for the film, which has begun principal photography this week.

The cast of Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling, and Josh Brolin alone would be pretty damn awesome going with that excellent synopsis. But it doesn’t stop there, it gets better. Starring alongside them will be Emma Stone, Robert Patrick, Giovanni Ribisi, Michael Peña, and Anthony Mackie, with Nick Nolte, Holt McCallany, Josh Pence, and Mireille Enos all potentially though uncertainly attached.

Definitely a project to look forward to. Fleischer proved himself as a brilliant director with his feature debut, Zombieland, and his next effort, 30 Minutes Or Less, due out here on 16th October, looks as though it will be another great success. Directed from a script by Will Beall (TV’s Nathan Fillion-starrer, Castle), based on a series of articles by Paul Lieberman, The Gangster Squad is set to be an entirely different direction to what we’ve seen from Fleischer in the past, and certainly one to expect big things from. With a fantastic cast attached, and a brilliant and engaging director, I can see nothing but good things coming out of this project. It’s due out sometime in 2013, and the earlier the better in my books.

That the good old USofA would remake it was nigh-on inevitable, whether it will be any good or not, we can only speculate.

Spike Lee is in the director’s chair for the remake, which tells of a man who is incarcerated for 15 years by an unknown captor, before being unexpectedly released and tasked with finding out who kidnapped him and why. Will Smith had been rumoured to be circling the project, but it will now be Josh Brolin. Brolin is all done now with his shooting duties for Men In Black III (alongside Will Smith, natch) and is expected to shoot Gangster Squad before squeezing Oldboy in before Jason Reitman’s Labor Day, which should kick off filming next June. Wowsers, that’s a lot of work in a short space of time, but you know what they say, make hay while the sun shines. Or something like that.

There are rumours circulating that long-serving Batman but occasional American Psycho Christian Bale might sign on as Brolin’s captor, which would certainly make for interesting viewing, but this is all going to stand or fall on Lee’s direction and Mark Protosevich’s screenplay.

What do you think? Is Brolin a good fit for this? Would Bale work well alongside him? Answers below.

He will play one of the team after Cohen, played here by Sean Penn, and joins Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin in Fleischer’s film, with man of the moment Bryan Cranston, Michael Pena and Anthony Mackie in support. The director has the very successful Zombieland under his belt and his pizza-boy hijacking comedy 30 Minutes or Less is due out in the next couple of months. The Gangster Squad is a definite change of pace but it’s doubtful that a comedic look at the 40s and 50s American gangster era is on the cards and it’s good to see a change of scene for a decent director.

The film is based on a series of L.A. Times articles detailing the battle to keep Cohen’s rapidly expanding criminal empire from expanding. Will Beall wrote the script and he is also credited on the Nicolas Winding Refn remake of Logan’s Run, although Alex Garland is the man credited as the main writer. The Gangster Squad is due out in 2013.

Currently winning tons of plaudits for his role as mild mannered science teacher-turned crystal meth “cook” and dealer in TV’s Breaking Bad, Bryan Cranston is up for two roles in a couple of high-profile feature films.

Variety is reporting that he’s circling a substantial part in Ben Affleck’s next directorial effort, the true-life hostage rescue drama, Argo. He’ll play one of the leads, an Irish CIA agent who, along with the Canadian government, helped rescue six U.S. diplomats (using a quirky plan of action) after they were taken hostage in Tehran in the late 70’s.

The site also brings news that he’s in negotiations to appear in 40’s LA-set crime drama, The Gangster Squad (a film which, incidentally, Affleck was once down to possible direct). If cast, he’ll join the likes of Sean Penn, Ryan Gosling and Josh Brolin as members of the aforementioned police team, formed to bring about the end of organised crime and corruption on the West Coast.

Cranston is certainly a busy bloke at the moment. He’s currently working on both the 80’s heavy metal musical, Rock of Ages, and the Total Recall remake (he plays villain, Vilos Cohaagen) and with talk of a fifth series of Breaking Bad on the way, this talented character actor’s schedule may be filled for some time yet.

The film is an adaptation of the 2009 novel of the same name by Joyce Maynard, who also wrote To Die For, which was adapted for the screen back in 1995 with Gus Van Sant at the helm and Nicole Kidman in the lead, relatively early on in both their careers.

Reitman has adapted the novel for the screen already, and is set to take the director’s job for the project too. His three feature films to date (Thank You For Smoking, Juno, and Up in the Air) have all been successful with audiences, and they show that he’s clearly a director we should all be keeping close tabs on.

Labor Day will see Winslet playing,

“a single mother of a young son who takes in a stranger [Brolin] with a dangerous past. She falls in love with him over the course of Labor Day Weekend.”

Winslet has most recently turned her attention to the five-part TV drama, Mildred Pierce, playing the eponymous character, a role which she’s been highly praised for. It’s been a few years since she’s starred in any features, back in late 2008 with Revolutionary Road and The Reader, the latter of which won her her Oscar for Best Actress, to go with her five nominations. But we can look forward to seeing her in Roman Polanski’s Carnage, alongside Christoph Waltz and Jodie Foster, Steven Soderbergh’s Contagion, alongside Matt Damon, Jude Law, and Gwyneth Paltrow, and Movie 43, which has one of the best ensemble casts I think I’ve ever seen, including Elizabeth Banks, Gerard Butler, Chloë Moretz, Emma Stone, Uma Thurman, Johnny Knoxville, and Hugh Jackman, to name but a few.

Brolin is an actor who has been around for a good few years longer than Winslet, getting his first ever role in that brilliant ’80s film we all love, The Goonies, but it’s only been in the past few years that he’s truly come to be a rising star, with roles in Milk (for which he got his Oscar nomination), True Grit, and the upcoming Men in Black III as the Young Agent K.

The original novel is told through the eyes of Henry, the young son of Winslet’s character, and so the success of the film will quite possibly depend in a large way on the acting capabilities of whoever is cast as the young boy. Winslet and Brolin are of course already well established in their craft, and the film will need just as strong a young actor for the characters’ relationships with each other to truly work.

Reitman is currently finishing up work on Young Adult, in which he partnered back up with Juno’s screenwriter, Diablo Cody, which is another project to be very excited about. Once he’s finished work on that, hopefully his attentions can then turn to Labor Day and get the project truly rolling towards production, and finding the young teen to play Winslet’s son.

One year later and the celebrations continue to be in full swing!

Richard Donner’s classic tale about a group of misfits called the Goonies who, when faced with the prospect of losing their homes to evil property developers, band together one rainy weekend in pursuit of pirates and buried treasure to save their Goondocks. It’s a film which continues to be enjoyed by audiences old and new, and nostalgists and fanatics (myself included) just can’t seem to get enough of it. Goonies never say die, after all.

So it’s no surprise then that it holds a very special place in our hearts here at HeyUGuys, as it not only captured the imaginations of our Co-Founders Dave and Jon’s minds growing up, but they were so inspired by it and their love of all things Film-related, that they decided to name the site after one the most famous quotes from the movie! And the rest, as they say, is history.

Much to the delight of Goonies fans who attended last year’s event held in The Goondocks (a.k.a Astoria, Oregon) Mayor Willis Van Dusen announced that 7th June would officially be recognised as “Goonies Day” in Astoria. The reason being, this was the date the movie was released in cinemas in the USA back in 1985. Regina Willkie, of the Astoria-Warrenton Chamber of Commerce, welcomes all Astoria-bound Goonies fans to participate in a number of planned Goonierific activities you will not want to miss out on, details of which can be found below. If only we could be there to join in fun and adventure!

So, it’s Goonies Day today. What are your favourite quotes from the movie? Have you ever done the Truffle Shuffle? Been on any of your own crazy Goonie adventures? Unleash your inner geek and let us know here.

From all of us at HeyUGuys, we wish you all a very happy Goonies day!

The Oregon Film Museum celebrates the art and legacy of films and film-making in the State of Oregon. Housed in the old Clatsop County Jail, known to Goonies fans as the scene of the opening jail break, the museum invites visitors to explore this and other films and the production behind making movies in Oregon. The Oregon Film Museum is expanding their exhibits to further tell the story of Oregon Film, including recent acquisition of a replica of the Goonies “Fratelli Jeep” and will celebrate with the fans on June 7 with a ribbon cutting at 10am.

Lunar Boy Gallery
HEY-YOU-GUYS!!! The Autumn Society & Lunar Boy Gallery join forces to bring you “THIS IS OUR TIME NOW” (A GOONIES ART SHOW), an exclusive Goonies art show in Astoria, Oregon (where the movie was filmed!).

A full list of participating businesses and their special way to show their appreciation to the fans will be posted online, or available at the Chamber of Commerce prior to the events: www.oldoregon.com/events
