Disney’s upcoming animated comedy, Wreck-It Ralph, inspired by the old 8-bit video arcade games, got a great update last summer from the film’s director, Rich Moore, as well as an official synopsis that sounds rather excellent.

We’ve now got the first look at the film to share with you, courtesy of CineHeroes via Rope of Silicon, and they give us a terrific indication of some of the things we can expect from the film.

John C. Reilly is leading the cast as the eponymous Wreck-It Ralph, with Jane Lynch, Jack McBrayer (best known for playing Kenneth in 30 Rock), and Sarah Silverman also lending their voices for what is looking like another instant Disney classic.

“Wreck-It Ralph (voice of Reilly) longs to be as beloved as his game’s perfect Good Guy, Fix-It Felix (voice of McBrayer). Problem is, nobody loves a Bad Guy. But they do love heroes… so when a modern, first-person shooter game arrives featuring tough-as-nails Sergeant Calhoun (voice of Lynch), Ralph sees it as his ticket to heroism and happiness. He sneaks into the game with a simple plan—win a medal—but soon wrecks everything, and accidently unleashes a deadly enemy that threatens every game in the arcade. Ralph’s only hope? Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Silverman), a young troublemaking “glitch” from a candy-coated cart racing game who might just be the one to teach Ralph what it means to be a Good Guy. But will he realize he is good enough to become a hero before it’s “Game Over” for the entire arcade? “

Back last summer, Moore spoke a little bit about the film and his interest in the project, saying,

“I love the idea of a very simple 8-bit video game character struggling with the complex question: ‘isn’t there more to life than the role I’ve been assigned?’ In his quest for the answer, we journey with our hero through three visually distinct video game worlds. It’s unlike anything anyone’s seen before, and I’m thrilled to be to creating it here at Walt Disney Animation Studios.”

And these great first three images seem to show us at least two those visually distinct video game worlds that he mentions. (The third image I’m not entirely sure about. I can’t decide if it’s a world of its own, or if it’s the kind of map of all the levels available, but I’d guess that the three images correspond to the three worlds we can look forward to delving into.)

Wreck-It Ralph is due to be released in the US on 12th November, and here in the UK on 26th December, which puts it up against Tarantino’s Django Unchained, and quite possibly Baz Luhrmann’s The Great Gatsby, both of which arrive in the US on Christmas Day. Naturally, each of the three films have a largely different audience (though of course many, like myself, will be in the centre of a three-circle Venn diagram), and should make for a fantastic end to 2012 in UK cinemas.

For now, here are your great first look images for your viewing pleasure. As usual, you can click to enlarge and enjoy them in even more detail. I love that first image of Wreck-It Ralph upon the hill, contemplating his lot opposite the building scalable by Donkey Kong-esque ladders.

Tried and tested on stage from Paris to London to Broadway, New York, Yasmina Reza’s successful play God of Carnage was always going to present a challenge being adapted for film by the playwright herself. However, the key to the story – shortened to Carnage – is the power of the acting talent assigned to play the parents; director Roman Polanski’s excellent casting of Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly as the Longstreets, and Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz as the Cowans is the absolute tour de force of the film.

After the Cowans’ son, Zachary (Polanski’s own son Elvis) ‘disfigures’ the Longstreets’ son, Ethan (Eliot Berger) with a stick in the park, the Longstreets, Penelope (Foster) and Michael (Reilly) invite the Cowans, Nancy (Winslet) and Alan (Waltz) over to their apartment to discuss what course of action should be taken next. However, a civilised, albeit contrived meeting unravels into childish chaos.

Set in New York, but filmed in Paris, Polanski’s Carnage is brilliantly acted, scripted, produced and directed, with all the nitty gritty relationship angst allowed to vent and later explode under one roof and in one location. The latter allows the tension to build from the start with the false pleasantries while Penelope drafts a formal-looking statement for the Cowans about what happened, adding in inflammatory language. The delicious development of the story is in the detail that you and the characters pick up on about each of the four players that suggests possible reasons for the kids’ ‘character flaws’ and the boys’ fight. In suppressing their true feelings, the whole fiasco and attention on pointless irrelevancies becomes a farce of epic proportions, which is where the dark humour lies.

Both sets of parents are complete contradictions that re-draw their allegiances as the story unfolds, down to basic ‘man verses woman’ and even macho traits, such as the hilarious scene involving high-flying lawyer Alan’s mobile phone, as well as the mens’ alpha dominance rearing its head over scotch and a cigar. While Waltz is delightful as the arrogant and blasé Alan, more interested in his business life than his personal one, and taking amusement from toying with his new acquaintances and his wife, it’s Reilly’s salesman character Michael who is the real catalyst in the story, manipulating the situation and encouraging the characters’ prejudices to pour forth.

Foster is a wonderful bag of shredded nerves and morals as liberal humanitarian Penelope who wants the others to see the bigger picture of the origins of violence from a world perspective. Her inverted snobbery matches Nancy’s prosperous, aloof nature, and after an unfortunate cobbler pie incident, their role reversal in the confrontation scenes allows them to see each others’ side of events as they bond over the trials and tribulations of motherhood and marriage. Winslet is a rollicking drunk to behold as she lets her prissy demeanour slip.

Carnage is one of the most accomplished and illuminating comedies of this year that lays bare the true, hidden depth of its characters within a downward spiral of complete folly. Polanski’s theatrical film is a breath of comedic fresh air at the box office, and a highly entertaining must-see.

***** (5/5)

It has an amazing cast which included Sacha Baron Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Jason Mantzoukas, Anna Faris, Fred Melamed, Rock Kohli, Megan Fox and John C. The man is used to being sued and causing controversy however so I guess he’s not too worried.

If you’ve missed our coverage of the film so far, you can catch up on it all right here, most recently including the UK trailer towards the end of last year.

With the release now imminent, Empire have a great new UK quad poster to share with us, featuring the film’s four principals front and centre, twice. So we get to see Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet, and Christoph Waltz, each doubled up.

“A showdown between two kids: about eleven, in a local playground. Swollen lips, broken teeth… Now the parents of the “victim” have invited the parents of the “bully” to their apartment to sort it out. Cordial banter gradually develops a razor-sharp edge as all four parents reveal their laughable contradictions and grotesque prejudices. None of them will escape the ensuing carnage.”

Co-written by Polanski and Yasmina Reza, based on her original play, Le Dieu du Carnage, the film has received mostly positive reviews, and received two Golden Globe nominations, as well as winning Polanski the Little Golden Lion at Venice last year.

Carnage will be out in UK cinemas on 3rd February. The film has had its Oscar-qualifying run in the US already, and has been to a number of European countries already as well, and now we’re very close to getting to see it too. Here’s the new UK quad poster to whet your appetites. As usual, click to enlarge.

We got the brilliant first trailer for Sacha Baron Cohen’s The Dictator yesterday, which immediately set up the controversy by opening the trailer with footage of a speech from Obama, and promised that fans of his earlier films can sleep safe in the assurance that this is going to be a lot of fun too.

Following on from that, we’ve now got the film’s first poster to share with you, via IMP Awards, in which Baron Cohen has posed for his immortalising portrait, whilst still wearing his green sunglasses. Brilliant.

The film reunites the leading man with Larry Charles, the director of Borat and Brüno, with a script coming from Baron Cohen and former Seinfeld writers Alec Berg, David Mandel, and Jeff Schaffer, all of whom have since been writing Curb Your Enthusiasm, for which Charles is executive producer and frequent director.

Alongside Baron Cohen will be Sir Ben Kingsley, Anna Faris, Megan Fox, John C. Reilly, and J.B. Smoove. Fox and Reilly both looked brilliant in the first trailer, and I think it was such a good move to keep Faris, the film’s female lead, out of our first look at the film yesterday.

I think a lot of trailers spoil the movie in some ways by putting in all the best bits, so when you go into a movie, you’ve seen most of what’s good about it already. With this, though, Faris being entirely absent from the trailer means we’ve still got a lot to look forward to that we’ve not yet seen anything of, and that is awesome in my books.

The Dictator is coming to our screens on 18th May next year, which is a date I’m looking forward to even more now that we’ve seen the trailer. Couple it up with this new poster, and I think Baron Cohen and Charles have another success on their hands. As usual, click to enlarge.

Here we have our first look at Sacha Baron Cohen’s latest The Dictator and it’s not a subtle affair.

Following on from the wild and untamed successes of Borat and Bruno, not to mention a couple of supporting roles for Tim Burton and Martin Scorsese in the meanwhile, this film reunites the actor with director Larry Charles and looks like a return to the character-fuelled outrage we’ve come to expect.

Lining up in support are his Hugo co-star Sir Ben Kingsley, Megan Fox, Anna Faris and John C. Reilly.

The trailer has Fox selling herself, a throwaway reference to a Kardashian and the usual conversative-baiting. It feels like more of the same, but it’ll be interesting to see Sacha Baron Cohen parading his latest creation alongside the assembled supporting cast, who may tame the bearded beast.

Moviefone have debuted the trailer, check out the man and his beard below,
Most of the film takes place in one room and I have a feeling it’s either going to be awesome or dull as dishwater but I am hoping for the former with such a fantastic cast.

Carnage is directed by Roman Polanski which also gives me hope that this could be great but time will tell. It hits UK cinemas 3rd February.

A showdown between two kids: about eleven, in a local playground. Swollen lips, broken teeth… Now the parents of the “victim” have invited the parents of the “bully” to their apartment to sort if out. Cordial banter gradually develops a razor-sharp edge as all four parents reveal their laughable contradictions and grotesque prejudices. None of them will escape the ensuing carnage.

Written and directed by Roman Polanski, the film is based on the acclaimed play God of Carnage by French playwright Yasmina Reza and premiered at the 68th Venice International Film Festival this year.

Whilst the poster doesn’t reflect on the film’s black comedy genre, it does express the film’s plot exceedingly well, showing two sets of parents (Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly) who meet up to talk after their children got into a fight at school.

It might not sound very interesting, or even look that way from the poser, but Carnage has received a number of excellent reviews and the play that it is based on has won three awards, including Best New Play at the 2009 Olivier Awards.

Carnage is set to be released on 3rd February, 2012, and here’s the latest poster, courtesy of IMP:

If you’ve missed out on our coverage of it, you can catch up on it all here, most recently including our report at the film’s UK premiere and an interview with director Lynne Ramsay and actor Ezra Miller, and our own review of the film.

We Need To Talk About Kevin’s final UK quad poster has surfaced over at Empire, and with the film now officially out for us all to go to our local cinemas to see, having been released on Friday, this should be the last of the UK advertising campaign that we’ll see for the film for now.

What we’ll be looking forward to seeing is how it will fare when the announcements are made for the Oscar nominations early next year. Until then, here’s the final UK poster to enjoy / be haunted by. If you like the look of it, the film should be playing in whatever cinema is nearest to you. As usual with the image, click to enlarge.

The atmosphere post-press screening was subdued to say the least and it’s a testment to the film’s power than both those who were familiar with the book were as shell-shocked as those who had never read a word of it.

It’s a harrowing film which benefits from an excellent cast and Lynne Ramsay’s assured and provocative direction and the director was on hand to talk about Kevin along with the actor who plays the troubled teen, Exra Miller.

Our good friends at Upbeat were on hand at the premiere and also had the chance to speak with Ramsay and Miller about the film,

Here’s the premiere report:

Indeed, what can honestly be said about Lynne Ramsay’s adaptation of Lionel Shriver’s riveting and utterly chilling book, We Need To Talk About Kevin, is that the role was written unquestionably for Swinton – or even the book’s character for that matter.

Shriver even quotes in the back of her book that the film adaptation is “well cast, beautifully shot and thematically loyal” to her novel. Any anomalies that arise from watching the film are purely subjective as a result of what you’ve already visualise while reading mother Eva’s (Swinton) story – and there are a few, perhaps, minor ones.

Travel journalist Eva never wanted to be a mother, certainly not to a boy who murders seven of his fellow high school students, a cafeteria worker and a teacher who tried to befriend him. Now, two years after Kevin’s horrific rampage, it’s time for her to come to terms with her teenage son’s actions, fearing she may have been partly responsible.

The story looks at the ultimate ‘nature verses nurture’ question; was Kevin born evil or was his upbringing a factor in his actions? Ramsay addresses this, but in a subliminal way, rather than focuses on it head on, as the book does through a series of letters by Eva to her absent husband. The opening shot perfectly captures the pre-mother, carefree nature of travel nut Eva, as Swinton wallows in happiness in a sea of crushed tomatoes at the La Tomatina festival in Buñol, Spain, that simultaneously symbolise the destruction and reminder of the colour red of blood that now dominates Eva’s every thought.

Swinton is spellbinding as she sleepwalks through her everyday existence after the night in question, punctured by moments of intense pain as she is left trying to cope. Ramsay also keeps her stunning cinematography deliberately disorientating and menacingly unsettling between past and present moments that blur into one to add to Swinton’s faultless performance. It’s perhaps no coincidence then that the parts of Ramsay’s interpretation that jar a little are the ‘clearer’ re-enactments of Kevin’s younger years.

Jasper Newell plays a challenging feature-film debut role as the younger Kevin. But it’s this part of the book about Kevin’s manipulative ways that plant the seeds of despair that is crucial and does not quite translate across as well or as terrifying, and that’s quite disappointing. Things aren’t helped by Newell’s comical schlock horror glares, like a latter-day Damien, and the script that should help cultivate a deep sense of foreboding, before being introduced to Ezra Miller’s Kevin, seems contrived.

That said Miller captures the cool, calculating character as well as can be expected – a little more apathy would have satisfied further. However, those who have not been exposed to the book will find Miller pitch-perfect in this, both in look and in action. Nevertheless, the pivotal dinner monologue given to his mother feels less curt and unnerving than it should.

Thankfully, Ramsay doesn’t recreate a grand ‘killing spree’ flashback, merely touching on the carnage caused throughout, then showing one iconic Kevin pose in the gym, and keeping things in a state of suspended disbelief and focused on Eva’s angle. The director visually nails the shocking, end domestic scene in the book, as well as the last mother-son prison meeting, with Miller giving an incredibly underplayed but potent glimpse of human emotion and fear in Kevin at the very end.

As a standalone film, this is one of the most chilling social thrillers out this year with some powerhouse performances from Swinton and Miller. The problems arise when personal interpretations of the meaning behind Eva’s words in the novel get in the way of enjoying what is before you on screen, and trying to separate the power of the written word from the spoken/unspoken one is tricky. Hence, fans of the book will naturally be divided, but, as Shriver says in her book, should not fear watching the film: They will agree on Swinton being the only actor perfect for the dynamic role of survivor Eva.

Those cool cats over at Mount Yahoo thought today was the right time to unleash a new trailer for the film which sees John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster and Christoph Waltz as two sets of parents squaring off against each other. With, hopefully, hilarious consequences.

For those who crave the reassuring, concise nature of a synopsis perhaps this will suffice?

A showdown between two kids: about eleven, in a local playground. Swollen lips, broken teeth… Now the parents of the “victim” have invited the parents of the “bully” to their apartment to sort if out. Cordial banter gradually develops a razor-sharp edge as all four parents reveal their laughable contradictions and grotesque prejudices. None of them will escape the ensuing carnage.

Reilly, and Jodie Foster – sitting down to discuss the problem of their sons fighting each other.

I personally can’t wait to see Polanski’s foray into comedy, and everything we’ve seen so far from the film suggests it’s going to be a thoroughly enjoyable ride.

“A showdown between two kids: about eleven, in a local playground. Swollen lips, broken teeth… Now the parents of the “victim” have invited the parents of the “bully” to their apartment to sort if out. Cordial banter gradually develops a razor-sharp edge as all four parents reveal their laughable contradictions and grotesque prejudices. None of them will escape the ensuing carnage.”

This new clip, courtesy of Collider, finds the two couples – Waltz and Winslet, Reilly and Foster – discussing their boys’ troubles. I think Reilly is especially brilliant in this scene, with his enjoyment of the discovery that his song is in a gang really entertaining to watch.

The film premiered at the Venice Film Festival last month, and though it’s still got no UK release date, with a 16th December US release scheduled, hopefully we will be seeing it either at the end of this year or the start of next. Without further ado, here’s the great first clip to enjoy. The volume’s a little low on this one, so you may need to turn your speakers up.

Leonardo DiCaprio came of age as a star in the late nineties and his collaboration in the first decade of the twenty-first century with Martin Scorsese allowed the director to get his money to make three films together, the second of which is out this week on Blu-ray.

The Aviator is an epic telling of the rich story of the influential businessman and aviator Howard Hughes with his ambition and talents as a man of new ideas perilously coupled with his misplaced trust and his, initially, latent paranoia. His influence and invention in the field of aviation at a time when dominance of the sky was still up in the air and post-war corporate interests began to gather ominously over the United State government makes for a compelling biopic thanks to an intriging central performance and some dizzing visual flights of fancy from Scorsese.

DiCaprio’s performance takes a while to convince, but as his Hughes spirals from boundless, horizon-seeking energy to disgraced recluse and back again DiCaprio disappears into the role and is given every opportunity by Scorsese’s camera and John Logan’s script to drive this film forward. Hughes’ OCD plays a significant part in the proceedings and provides an anchor to the man’s lofty ambitions, though it’s a little too overwrought in some scenes when Scorsese’s trust in the audience leaves him.

The director’s obvious love for Hughes shines through from the first sequence on his making of Hell’s Angels, the astronomically expensive feature film, and the opulent sway of Hollywood in the late twenties and thirties is beautifully rendered in the production design, something which is shown off particularly well with this Blu-ray release. Mention must be made of the flight sequences which are breathaking and, thankfully, free from the weightless CGI fests of similar fare. Visually this film is something special.

Cate Blanchett accomplishes the near-impossible in crafting a Katherine Hepburn that is at once completely recognisable and yet strikingly unique, something which the film does well to achieve as the casting of Gwen Stefani, Jude Law and Kate Beckinsale as three of the Hollywood greats flies dangerously close to stunt casting. Alec Baldwin once again proves that in the right hands he can tone down the self parody to, just as he would do a few years later in his work with Scorsese in The Departed, give a solid performance.

This new Blu-ray contains everything from the original DVD release with nothing new to offer those who have already bought the film however the quality of the transfer is wonderful, with the blue rolling hills of Hollywood giving way to the lush green gardens of the Hepburn residence and the scope of the storytelling given a visual polishing to be proud of.

Since then, we’ve had the first UK trailer, followed by two UK quad posters, and now another new poster for the film comes courtesy of IMP Awards.

The film premiered at Cannes this year to great success, and its 21st October release date is highly anticipated, with the film getting some Oscar buzz ahead of the awards early next year. Written and directed by Lynne Ramsay (Ratcatcher), We Need To Talk About Kevin stars Tilda Swinton, John C. Reilly, and Ezra Miller as the titular Kevin.

“The mother (Swinton) of a teenage boy (Miller) who went on a high-school killing spree tries to deal with her grief – and feelings of responsibility for her child’s actions – by writing to her estranged husband (Reilly).”

With just over a month to go until its release here, we can no doubt look forward to seeing more of the film in the coming weeks before it finally comes out. Without further ado, here’s the new poster which features Swinton as its focus. As usual, click to enlarge.

Carnage has an all-star cast which includes Jodie Foster, John C. Reilly, Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz and is directed by the (choose word most applicable to your own opinion) legendary / infamous director, Roman Polanski.

No UK release date yet but according to IMDb, it’s out in the US 16th December.

Eagle eyed Bleeding Cool happened upon the new trailer and poster today and shared it with the world, and thank goodness they did because this is a fine trailer for what looks to be a challenging film.

If you’ve not already seen the three clips we posted a while ago they are worth viewing after the trailer as they give a good impression of what’s to come, and the notion Tilda Swinton and John C. Reilly under the directorial hand of Lynne Ramsay is enticing.

The trailer is below and a shiny new poster follows,
