We’re three and a half months away from the third instalment in the Men in Black series, and things couldn’t be looking better! The first trailer for Men In Black III landed towards the end of last year, and if you haven’t seen it yet, I highly recommend you rectify that, because it looks so good. Every bit as good as the first two films, with the addition of a decade’s progression in special effects.

We’ve now got an absolutely fantastic new image from the film, courtesy of IMDb, in which we see Will Smith riding what has to be one of the coolest and most futuristic vehicles I’ve ever seen. We can also see Josh Brolin in the background as the Young Agent K, which means that this ridiculously cool futuristic vehicle is presumably actually from the 1960s in the film, so I can’t wait to see what they have in store for us in the present day!

“In Men in Black III, Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) are back… in time. J has seen some inexplicable things in his 15 years with the Men in Black, but nothing, not even aliens, perplexes him as much as his wry, reticent partner. But when K’s life and the fate of the planet are put at stake, Agent J will have to travel back in time to put things right. J discovers that there are secrets to the universe that K never told him — secrets that will reveal themselves as he teams up with the young Agent K (Josh Brolin) to save his partner, the agency, and the future of humankind.”

Barry Sonnenfeld returns behind the camera once more, with Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones of course reprising their roles and a host of new faces, including Brolin, Emma Thompson, Alice Eve, Bill Hader, Nicole Scherzinger, and Jemaine Clement as the main villain, who we got a good look at last month.

Men in Black III will be with us in 3D on 25th May, which should be a fantastic way to end the spring and get the summer box office off to a good start. For now, here’s the excellent new image of Smith and Brolin. It surfaced last month in small scanned form, but now we’re getting it in brilliant hi-res, and it looks so cool. And as usual, you can click to enlarge. This is going to be good.

We got a brilliant look at this year’s upcoming Men in Black III just under a month ago when the film’s first trailer hit, and it was every bit as awesome as you’d expect, taking us right back to the genius that we loved so much from the first two films.

One of the most unexpected things about the production is that the lead villain’s role is being played by Jemaine Clement, one half of the Flight of the Conchords duo. If you’ve seen the show, or listened to any of their stuff, you’ll know that he’s not really the first person you think of when you say ‘alien villain’. I can’t wait to see it happen though.

Clement was noticeably absent from the trailer, and we’ve now got our first look at him looking all evil as a bearded biker, courtesy of the New Zealand Herald, via The Playlist. The image in fact seems to reveal that whilst we thought Clement wasn’t in the trailer, we did actually get a look at him transformed by visual effects in it last month. If you go back and watch (I’ve embedded it for you below), I dare you to try and tell me that that isn’t him at the 0:18/0:19-mark; the beard is too damn similar. I think that’s the alien villain we can look forward to seeing on screen, and man, are those teeth and eyes are creepy! They really do know how to make their aliens look interesting.

The film is directed by Barry Sonnenfeld, who brought us the first two films, and of course sees the return of Will Smith and Tommy Lee Jones in the leads. Josh Brolin will be playing the Young Agent K, with the rest of the cast including Emma Thompson, Alice Eve, Bill Hader, Nicole Scherzinger, and Rip Torn reprising his role as Zed.

Men in Black III will be hitting the big screen in 3D on 25th May this year, and it looks like it’s going to be an awesome affair. Until then, enjoy this great first image of Clement without make-up/special effects, rockin’ the bearded look, and compare it with the alien in the trailer beneath it. Let us know if you think it’s the same guy; I feel like I need someone else to confirm my suspicions, just to be sure. This is going to be so much fun.

Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement are without a doubt, in my opinion, two of the funniest comedians ever to grace the big or small screen, and their rise to fame through their comedy duo/band, Flight of the Conchords, has been very much well deserved in recent years.

Starting out in their native New Zealand, the pair then had a radio show on BBC Radio 2 back in 2004, before starring (as Bret and Jemaine) on the self-titled and utterly brilliant HBO TV show, Flight of the Conchords, along with their radio co-star Rhys Darby (playing their ridiculously entertaining band manager, Murray). Running for two seasons, the programme is by far one of the funniest I’ve ever seen, and if you’ve never seen it, then I highly recommend you pick it up as soon as possible and treat yourself to an early Christmas present.

The second season of the show ended back in 2009, and when it came to an end, the pair announced that it wouldn’t be returning for a third season. Word now comes from THR, via Collider, however, that we may not have seen the last of Bret and Jemaine just yet after all. But rather than bring the show back for a third season, they’re planning on moving to the big screen instead:

“We’re gonna try and do a movie. We just need a story.”

Transitioning from being a band to having your own radio show to then having your own comedy TV show isn’t something many (if any?) people have ever done, and taking it even further to turn the show into a film would be so good, not to mention very impressive.

The success of The Inbetweeners Movie this summer clearly showed that a TV show can be turned into a very popular movie, and turning Flight into a movie has such brilliant potential. Given that McKenzie’s said they’re still in need of a story, it’s early days for the project, but the very fact that it’s a possibility is excellent news in my eyes.

The interview came in McKenzie’s promotion of the upcoming The Muppets film, which hits the US this weekend (we’ve got to wait until 10th February for it), having worked with his Flight co-creator, writer, and director, James Bobin, director of The Muppets, as the film’s music supervisor, writing quite a few of the songs for the film. Below is a great portion of the interview, in which McKenzie talks about how he’s been a fan of The Muppets for centuries.

He’ll next be seen starring in Peter Jackson’s highly anticipated The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey at the end of next year, and Clement will be coming to the big screen next May in the similarly anticipated Men in Black III. With any luck, there’ll find enough time to set the Flight movie a little further in motion soon and figure out the story. Whatever they come up, you just know it’s going to be brilliant.

(I’ve also put below one of my favourite scenes from the TV show, just because it’s awesome. Enjoy.)

After many years of mutual admiration their cosy life is disrupted when Brazilian bird expert Tulio arrives and persuades Linda to take Blu to Brazil to meet Jewel (Anne Hathaway) as he believes them to be the last female and male blue macaws on earth. As you might expect it doesn’t go to plan and the rest of the film follows the adventures of Blu and Jewel as they battle smugglers, an evil cannibal parrot called Nigel and the twists and turns of both circumstance and adventure in equal measure.

If you haven’t seen the film I can’t do better than to point you to our original review here by Vicki which goes into greater detail about the plot and throws in the odd spoiler or two, and means that I can spare you my attempts to reinvent the wheel.

I missed the film in the cinema when it came out, though my family saw it and loved it, so they were happy to get the chance to see it again which means that I’d say that it does have repeat viewing value unlike some I could mention. In a crowded market of computerised animal animations it’s bound to draw comparisons with Madagascar but it really does create its own space, reminding me in parts of Disney classics, such as 101 Dalmatians with its bumbling baddies, plus more recent films such as Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs for its geeky heroes. Nigel the evil parrot is definitely a star turn as the evil bird cooperating with the poachers and a source of perfectly voiced malevolence.

To whet your appetite we’ve been given an exclusive clip for you to enjoy

Now the chances are that you’ll be getting the DVD because you saw the film when it originally came out though if you missed it the first time around like me then I’d really recommend it.

As is customary with these things the DVD does have a selection of extras

Deleted scene – Fruit Stand

Taio Cruz- Telling The World music video….

Bring The Party – UK families videoed dancing with the Rio birds

The final points to make are that you get the code for a free copy of the Angry Birds Rio game with it and that it also includes a digital copy to enjoy on your iPhone, iPad or tablet.

Rio is available on DVD and Blu-ray in shops now or available to rent on LOVEFiLM

We know that the plot surrounds Will Smith’s Agent J going back in time to visit his counterpart Agent K (Brolin) for some very important reason, and Alice Eve’s Agent Oh, who is played in the present by Emma Thompson.

Jemaine Clement, Nicole Scherzinger are also joining in the fun and were hoping that Barry Sonnenfeld has managed to end up with a decent script this time – I’d like it to involve going back in time to prevent the second Men in Black film from being made. Which probably won’t happen.

At first glance the Antipodean comedy “Eagle vs. Shark” appears very much cut from the same comedic cloth as Jared Hess’ 2004 ode to geekdom “Napoleon Dynamite” with its socially inept lead characters, quirky soundtrack and offbeat comic sensibilities. On closer inspection, however, Taika Waititi’s debut feature reveals itself to be something altogether different; a charming romantic comedy fuelled by a witty script, a great cast, a gorgeous soundtrack and a great deal of heart.

Fans of cult TV series “Flight of the Conchords” will already recognize lead actor Jemaine Clement who, as Jarrod, most closely resembles the inimitable Mr. Dynamite with his underdeveloped social skills, lack of sexual expertise and penchant for videogames, kung fu and dressing up as his favourite animal (“I almost came as a shark actually, but then I realized an eagle’s slightly better”). Nonetheless it is this very man that Lily (Loren Horsley) watches from afar, his entrance into the Meaty Boy fast food restaurant where she works played out like something akin to The Second Coming amidst a bright white light and a suitable degree of slow motion.

Jarrod, however, is far more interested in Lily’s friend Jenny to whom he indirectly extends an invitation to attend a party … an invitation which she promptly rejects and throws into the trash whereupon Lily retrieves it and attends said party herself dressed, rather impressively I might add, as a shark. It’s this peculiar setup alongside a triumphant entry into the annual “Fight Man” competition under the alias “Dangerous Person” that leads Lily into the arms (and bed) of Jarrod and whilst the results are painfully wince-inducing at times and woefully unsexy they also resonate with charm, warmth and a healthy degree of humour.

Much of the films success is surely to be attributed towards Horsley whose performance as Lily is never less than utterly enchanting. Whilst there are times when Jarrod’s childish impetuousness may leave you wondering quite what she sees in him it’s her scenes with Jarrod’s family and her own brother that highlight the true heart beating within this somewhat geeky exterior. Whether she’s blissfully misquoting the lyrics to Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”, attending a party caked in bad makeup and a hideous designer tracksuit or taking part in endearingly childish games with her brother she’s never less than angelically innocent and instantly lovable and I found myself developing a great deal of affection towards her throughout the duration of the film. Witness the scene when she tells one of her favourite jokes to the assembled family (a joke that is, in all fairness, woefully unfunny) and temporarily unites the room in a moment of warm laughter or her discussion with Jarrod’s father on a hilltop that will surely leave you wanting only to reach into the screen and hug the dear girl. That Horsley is not a huge success off the back of the film is, indeed, a mystery of mysteries (roles in such televisual fodder as” Young Hercules” and “Xena” are otherwise the only high point of her career) as whilst the film is an absolute gem it’s the character of Lily that will surely resonate with you the most come the closing credits.

And speaking of credits who would have thought that a piece of stop motion animation featuring two apples and The Stone Roses’ “This Is The One” could end the movie on such an exhilarating high. Yet The Stone Roses are but one of many musical highlights with a delightful soundtrack by Wellington indie rock band The Phoenix Foundation adding a great deal of character to proceedings.

The supporting cast, too, is hugely impressive with top marks going to Joel Tobeck as Lily’s “cartoonist/impressionist” brother whose cartoons are childishly inept and impressions frankly terrible and Cohen Holloway as Jarrod’s best friend and computer geek Mason whose computer is both hilariously out of date and, in one of the films funniest scenes, chock full of pornography.

With its quirky ideals, warm heart, superb comic timing, colourful cast of characters, superb soundtrack and Horsley’s truly mesmerising performance “Eagle vs. Shark” is a wonderfully affecting film that just goes to shows that there really is someone out there for everybody … well, apparently!

“That was some pretty good sex last night, huh?”

Eight year later however Messrs. Smith and Jones are reuniting with a few new faces for a third trip around the galaxy.

Josh Brolin, Emma Thompson, Alec Baldwin and Betty White jump on board the MIB3 wagon for the next installment of the series which comes complete with a time twisting plot. Set pictures have surfaced from Splash (via ComingSoon) which can be seen below and you can follow the links for more pics.

The 3D picture has a release date of May 25th, 2012.

In other, MIB3 related news, The L.A. Times have an interesting article on the recruiting of Catch Me If You Can screenwriter Jeff Nathanson to kick the script into shape. The Times claim that Nathanson will take Etan Cohen’s draft and concentrate his efforts on the section of the script where the young K (played by Josh Brolin) is visited by Will Smith’s J. On set rewrites are a matter of course for many big budget productions and the report also mentions that the whole shebang will be shut down over Christmas and restart in the new year with the present day scenes being filmed in 2010 and the 1969 scenes will shoot next year.

E! Online are reporting that Pussycat Doll Nicole Scherzinger has just be confirmed, alongside much-loved US comedienne and former Golden Girl, Betty White (who hosted Saturday Night Live this May at the sprightly age of 88!)

Scherzinger has revealed that the name of her character is Lilly and that “She’s like a small villain role. I’m so excited because I get to die. I make an appearance. I say a couple of lines and then I die.”

Thanks for the spoiler Nicole! Bet the makers are glad they chose you for the part now.

Other new cast members who have yet to ruin the film for any potential audience by revealing the fate of their characters are Gemma Arterton, Josh Brolin, and Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement.

Nice guy Tim Conrad (Paul Rudd) has determined to escape from life as a cubicle drone and ascend to the lofty heights of the executive floor at Fender Financial. Optimistic, in the face of recent rejection, that girlfriend Julie will soon consent to an ‘upgrade’ to fiancée he believes his success will secure their happily ever after. Opportunity knocks when company head Lance Fender offers him an audition for a future with the company – an invitation to his exclusive Winner’s Dinner. The price of entry: bring your own schmuck!

Tim cannot in good conscience attend. He has given his word to Julie that he will not. Tim always keeps his word, after all he is a nice guy. At least he was, until heartbroken IRS man Barry Speck stumbled in front of his car and unleashed his well-meaning friendship upon Tim’s once happy life. Barry’s hobby is so preposterous and his life so inconsequential that the gentle saboteur seems the ideal guest for dinner and promotion a mere three courses away…

I have yet to see Le Dîner de Cons, the 1998 French farce which inspired Dinner for Schmucks, but I must confess I’d had higher hopes for the material. I had imagined a black comedy in the vein of In the Company of Men (perhaps with a slightly lighter heart) – the pratfalls and Carry On quality of the bondage gags came as something of a shock to the system. The careless cruelty of the Winner’s Dinner is a lovely set-up for a comedy and when dinner finally arrives it is well worth the wait. However, the story takes such a meandering path to the table that at times I found my mind wandering away from the film altogether.

The strengths of Dinner for Schmucks lie almost entirely in its performances, the weaknesses in its plot. The supporting cast (including The IT Crowd’s Chris O’Dowd) were an utter treat – underpinning the weaker moments of the story – and a sub-plot involving Julie’s sexually incontinent client Kieran (Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement) was almost worth the price of entry alone. Kieran’s ‘wild’ self-portraits and Barry’s rodent still lives provided the majority of the film’s genuinely funny moments and the opening scene united the entire audience in surprised laughter. David Walliams also shone, albeit gaudily, as an odious prospective client, it was nice to see him finally play slightly against camp type. And be sure to look out for Zach (The Hangover) Galifianakis’ mesmeric turn!

Where the film fails is in its desire to unite slapstick with sentiment, the script flaunts vulgar and lazy humour almost to the point of distaste. Steve Carrell too confused, playing Barry with the strangest mix of tenderness – as the tragic clown who cannot see he is ridiculous – and clumsiness – as the circus clown who blunders, flails and falls. Once the first course is served Dinner for Schmucks comes in to its own, but I fear for some it may arrive far too late. The guests are a brilliantly conceived sideshow of the weird and the WTF. Although the biggest schmucks at the table are, of course, the smug men in suits.

Notes of perfect melancholy, alongside the humour, saved this lopsided film from descending into soulless schlock. I thoroughly enjoyed Paul Rudd’s performance – he was engaging & endearing – and his presence elevated the film above generic slapshtick. In its entirety Dinner for Schmucks was undoubtedly flawed but there were irresistible moments of sheer delicious comedy which made it quite impossible to dislike.

Dinner for Schmucks is released in the UK on September 3rd

It looks like a fairly quirky comedy film, likely to be carried by Carrel and Rudd’s almost effortless charm and comedic timing. Roach’s reputation will attract audiences, having directed films in both the Austin Powers and Meet The Parents film series.

The esteemed JoBlo have spilled all kinds of beans and the choicest cuts include the main plot revolving around time travel in which Messrs Smith and Jones return to 1969 where they join the young Agent Kay (this is Josh Brolin, playing a mid twenties version of Tommy Lee Jones. as JoBlo point out -Brolin is 42 which seems odd) in defeating the evil Jemaine Clement shaped villain Yaz.

Callbacks to the previous films include more celebrities outed as aliens, popular culture spoofs (the time travel device involves an iPhone app), and reading these new reports (and for more details with spoilers ahoy check out Brendon Connelly’s Bleeding Cool post) I’m not getting too excited about this one. With Etan Cohen’s script seemingly not deviating too far from the last two outings I have to hope that the new blood of Brolin and Clement give this one a shot in the arm.

Since everything seems to be going that way, I guess it was no surprise. Josh Brolin is already cast along along with Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith with director Barry Sonnenfeld also back for the third movie. We’ve got a bit more news from the movie today from Deadline who have given us information on who the nemesis of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith will be.

According to the site, Jemaine Clement willl play Yaz:

Flight of the Conchords stars Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie declined to return for a 3rd season of the HBO series, but they have been touring around the world and selling out most venues. Which bodes well for Jermaine now that he’s tuning up to play the villainous Yaz in Men in Black III, the sequel that is being fast-tracked by Columbia Pictures. Will Smith stars with Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin, and Barry Sonnenfeld directs. Clement will next be seen co-starring with Steve Carell in Dinner For Schmucks, the Jay Roach-directed DreamWorks comedy that Paramount distributes July 23. Both films are produced by Walter Parkes and Laurie MacDonald, who saw what work Clement was doing on Schmucks and lobbied for him to join MIB3.

As they say, Men in Black 3 is being fast-tracked so expect more details like this one to start emerging in the coming weeks.

We knew that Will Smith had signed on to Sony’s series about a secret government department to deal with all types of extra terrestrial shenanigans and now Showbiz 411‘s Roger Friedman spoke to the Men in Black behind the camera, director Barry Sonnenfeld, who confirmed that Tommy Lee Jones has signed on as well.

Earlier reports indicated that Josh Brolin was set to play a part in the third film, set for a May 2011 release, potentially as a replacement for Tommy Lee Jones if he didn’t sign on. And with Sacha Baron Cohen and Jemaine Clement the other names thrown into the ring this could be a fun revisiting for the team.

Oh, and if the title didn’t give it away, Sonnenfeld also confirmed it’ll be shot in 3D, because that’s what all the cool kids are doing now. Though after the second film I’m naturally dubious about another movie there was certainly enough in the MIB world, and especially in the great interplay between Messrs Smith and Jones, to make this one worth looking out for.

I hope you’ll join me in glossing over the awful sequel to the 1997 Men In Black film and come to news of a Men In Black 3 with a fresh sense of optimism.

Barry Sonnenfeld’s late ninties cosmic caper blended perfectly the newly minted CGI whirligig with the comic book sensibilities of the source, and while the Hollywood sheen blunted a few edges the engaging duo of Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith made for an enjoyable ride.

(This is the part where we gloss over the sequel.)

So now here we are with rumours on casting, following previous reports of Josh Brolin a likely candidate for a young Tommy Lee Jones in the movie and Tropic Thunder writer Etan Cohen being tipped to write the third installment, Bloody Disgusting have two more names for this forthcoming film.

While I thought Borat and Bruno were fine as attempts at a one man demolition crew, I enjoyed his turn in Sweeney Todd far more, giving Sacha Baron Cohen a character not of his own creating allowed him to step back a little and check him ego in check and emerge as a fine character actor. So the news that he’s talking to the producers about a role is a good thing – let’s have him as the bad guy, ok?

Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement is also rumoured to be in talks to star, perhaps as a MIB himself, whatever happens with these choices, and whoever signs on the dotted line the fact that Sony are looking at these two is probably a good sign for the third film.

We posted the domestic trailer a while back and we’ve just got our hands on the international version. Check it out below after the synopsis.

Despicable Me is directed by Chris Renaud & Pierre Coffin and features the voices of Steve Carell, Jason Segel, Russell Brand, Will Arnett, Kristen Wiig, Danny McBride, Miranda Cosgrove, Jack McBrayer, Mindy Kaling, Jemaine Clement and Julie Andrews. It’s released 15th October 2010.

In a happy suburban neighbourhood surrounded by white picket fences with flowering rose bushes, sits a black house with a dead lawn. Unbeknownst to the neighbours, hidden beneath this home is a vast secret hideout. Surrounded by a small army of minions, we discover Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), planning the biggest heist in the history of the world. He is going to steal the moon (Yes, the moon!) in Universal’s new 3-D CGI feature, Despicable Me.

Gru delights in all things wicked. Armed with his arsenal of shrink rays, freeze rays, and battle-ready vehicles for land and air, he vanquishes all who stand in his way. Until the day he encounters the immense will of three little orphaned girls who look at him and see something that no one else has ever seen – a potential Dad.

The world’s greatest villain has just met his greatest challenge: three little girls named Margo, Edith and Agnes.
